How to choose the best destination for your family

Choosing where to go is half the battle. To make things easier, here’s a quick comparison of top family destinations, including what they offer, who they’re best for, when to go, and how friendly they are to your wallet.

Tips for Europe with kids: What to know for your next trip

A young boy wearing a flight cap and goggles lies on top of a suitcase with outstretched arms, joyfully imagining he is flying, his face adorned with a wide smile.

For parents who want to share the joys of traveling to Europe with their kids, the prospect can seem exciting but intimidating. After all, there’s a lot to navigate: language barriers, local customs and culture, and unfamiliar sleeping arrangements – all of which can be a big adjustment not just for little ones, but adults, too.

Here, a few parent-tested tips on making your family trip a little smoother.

Booking hotels in Europe with kids

If you’ve recently booked a hotel in Europe for your family, you may have noticed an unfamiliar requirement: adding in your kids’ ages. This is standard protocol for most European hotels, whose pricing models are based on not only the number of guests allowed per room but their ages.

Depending on the hotel’s policy, you may not be able to book a room online for four guests. If you have issues, it’s best to contact the hotel directly to confirm their policy – and figure out what your options are. Some hotels also offer discounts for children, including meals, which can be a helpful way to keep costs down.

Transit in Europe with kids: Train or plane?

I’m a big fan of taking the train whenever possible while traveling in Europe with kids. Most countries have well-developed train systems that make it a cinch to reach the city center or travel between cities. The train also is often more cost-effective, comfortable, and better suited for little ones, since you can move around as needed.

That said, there’s a learning curve to traveling by train (and using public transportation in general). Make sure to allow plenty of time for buying tickets, locating your platform and transfers. And travel as light as possible: Unlike planes, there’s no checked baggage option for train travel, so leave the giant suitcase at home.

That said, some destinations aren’t easily accessible via train, so a flight might be necessary. If you do fly, keep in mind that most European-based airlines have much stricter weight and size restrictions for carry-on baggage than US-based airlines, especially budget carriers.

Bring cash and credit cards

If you’re in the European Union, good news: There’s only one currency, the euro, to manage. That said, while most countries are increasingly equipped to handle credit card payments for everything from a hotel room to an ice cream cone, not all are.

That’s why it’s helpful to always carry some cash on hand, both in bills and coins. Case in point: Following a dinner in Florence one fall evening, the server informed me the digital payment system was down and I would have to pay in cash. Luckily, I had enough on me, or else I would have had to find an ATM nearby – a hassle I was glad not to have to bother with.

Finally, keep in mind that while most restaurants and shops accept US credit cards, some do not – like certain grocery stores in the Netherlands, which accept only Europe-based debit cards.

How did I select these destinations?

I am based in France and enjoy going on adventures across Europe with my two children. Many of these places we have discovered together. With that in mind, each destination, from culturally rich Tuscany to the beaches in Crete, has been chosen for its potential to create long lasting memories for families. These lived experiences, combined with careful research, have shaped this list.

Your family adventure doesn’t stop here. For more great vacation ideas check out the best beach vacations in Europe.
