Of all the major celebrations around the world for St. Patrick’s Day, KAYAK found the ones Americans are traveling most for. New York, Chicago and Boston ranked the highest in searches for both flights and hotels in the dates around the holiday. Interested in painting one of these towns green? Here are our tips on how to celebrate:

Boston

With the highest concentration of Irish descendants outside of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Boston are truly something to behold. Check out Dropkick Murphys at the House of Blues, take your pick of local pub crawls, enjoy an Irish Breakfast at The Black Rose or Lansdowne Pub and attend the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Southie on Sunday, the 16th.

New York

With no shortage of Irish pubs and restaurants, NYC is home to a huge Irish community. Spend the weekend checking out iconic spots like The Landmark Tavern or Molly’s Shebeen Bar & Restaurant, stop by the Irish Arts Center in Hell’s Kitchen for step dance performances and Irish language classes, and cap off your stay with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade along Fifth Avenue on Monday.

Chicago

Make it a whole weekend affair for St. Patrick’s Day. The annual Chicago River dyeing is one of the most iconic celebrations of the holiday in the world. Get to the riverfront by 10am on Saturday, March 15th to get a glimpse of this spectacle, and then head over to Columbus Drive to watch the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin.

Despite being the birthplace of St. Patrick’s Day, Dublin didn’t even crack the top 5 most popular cities for Americans to celebrate this year. If you’re planning to head over to have a pint and get in on the fun, expect airfare to run you $659 for a roundtrip flight, on average, and hotel rates to run you $263 per night on average. 

Plan to get to Dublin a few days ahead of the big day. The St. Patrick’s Day Festival officially kicks off on March 15th with exhibits and performances, and eventually culminates in the National St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
