Hotels + stays
Where to stay in Koh Samui: Best areas & hotels for every traveler.
From its white sand and stunning seas to lush rainforests, Thailand’s second largest island offers a true tropical paradise. With so many amazing beaches, the challenge lies in deciding where to stay in Koh Samui. I’ve handpicked the best hotels in Koh Samui for every type of traveler.
Where to stay in Koh Samui? Chaweng Beach is lively with nightlife, and Lamai Beach is slightly quieter with family-friendly resorts. Mae Nam Beach offers a relaxed, authentic experience, and Lipa Noi Beach is perfect for couples seeking seclusion. Bo Phut & Fisherman’s Village have their own unique charm and provide easy access to local food and culture.
Koh Samui (sometimes spelled Ko Samui, koh/ko meaning island) is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife and luxurious resorts, while also offering a range of activities and a good tourist infrastructure that caters to families and honeymooning couples.
A look at the map will show you that most of the action, whether it be hotels in Koh Samui, shopping or nightlife, concentrates on the northeast part of the island known as Bo Phut. This is also where you will find Samui Airport.
North of the airport, sits Wat Phra Yai, the Big Buddha, one of Koh Samui’s most famous sights. Further west, the actual Bo Phut Beach and the Fisherman’s Village with its fun night market.
Chaweng Beach on the east coast is considered Koh Samui’s main beach, but travelers also love Lamai and Mae Nam. If you wanted more seclusion, Lipa Noi, on the west coast, is the place for you.
In the center of Koh Samui, accommodations are few and far between, but there are plenty of waterfalls and viewpoints to explore, as well as a few elephant sanctuaries.
Tips for your Koh Samui stay & how to get around.
I have been to Koh Samui a few times, and one downside is its lack of public transport. While I usually don’t mind walking, most areas are not very pedestrian-friendly.
Taxis:Taxis are considerably expensive. You can sometimes use the taxi app Grab, Asia’s version of Uber, but prices are still so much higher than, for example, in Bangkok.
Airport transfer: If you are coming from or going to the airport, you should ask your resort for an airport transfer. This generally won’t cost you much more than a taxi and saves you the hassle of negotiation. Alternatively, you make use of the minivan transfers at the airport, where you share a ride with other passengers. These have a fixed rate depending on the area in Koh Samui where you are staying. However, they will gather a minimum of passengers before departure, so you may have to wait a bit.
Car rental: For getting around Koh Samui, you can either book an organized tour with a driver or rent a motorbike or car. I personally think Koh Samui is big enough to warrant a car, especially if you are traveling with your family or a group of friends.
To rent and drive a car or motorcycle in Thailand, you will need your valid US Driver’s License as well as an International Driving Permit (IDP) and your passport. Keep in mind that Thailand drives on the left-hand side of the road.
Songthaews: The only other option is shared taxis, the so-called songthaews, where you sit in the back of a covered pick-up truck on a bench. However, there is no proper timetable, and the routes can be a bit hard to understand for foreigners.
Transfer to the pier: Many travelers will use Koh Samui as a jump-off point to catch a boat to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. There are a few different piers on the island that companies like Lomprayah and Seatran use. These ferry companies usually offer an inexpensive transfer from the airport or your hotel to the pier and vice versa. If you can, make use of this transfer, as it is the cheapest option.
And learn from my experience: I had chosen an arrival time at Samui Airport that was cutting it too close, and just saw the van depart in front of my eyes. While I made it to my boat in time, I had to fork out for an expensive private taxi to get to the pier. The moral of the story – check the transfer times with your ferry company carefully (you can use the LINE App or Facebook Messenger).

The best hotels on Chaweng Beach.
Chaweng Beach is the island’s lively hub, bustling with nightlife, dining and shopping. It’s great for solo travelers, couples and families who want to be in the action.
For the budget traveler looking to experience Chaweng Beach, P168 Hostel Samui is the way to go. It’s located close to all the action and offers both dorms and private rooms. This hostel is known for its friendly and social atmosphere, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking to meet and connect with fellow travelers.
Remarkable for its Sino-Thai architecture, infinity pools and beachfront views, Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort might look familiar. That’s because it was one of the filming locations for White Lotus. Just as in the show, you’ll find atmospheric dining in lush surroundings, yoga sessions and an extensive selection of spa services.
Chaweng’s design icon, The Library is located right on the beach. It’s known for its striking red pool, beautiful minimalist suites and lounge filled with books. The onsite restaurant, The Page, is also a standout spot for a dinner to remember. The Library is close to nightlife but still offers guests a private sanctuary.
This is a beachfront favorite with lots of family rooms. Plus, you’ll find a children’s pool, colorful playroom and babysitting services on site. The spacious hotel grounds and proximity to the beach also offer plenty of room to run and play. Chaweng Regent Beach Resort has great amenities for mom and dad to relax as well – including a sauna, gym and full-service spa.
Lamai Beach offers a quieter scene with white sands, mid-range resorts and family-friendly stays.
Utopia Resort
Best for: Budget-conscious beach-seekers

With its great location and affordable stays, Utopia Resort is an excellent option for anyone trying to maximize their travel budget while visiting Lamai Beach. This is a true gem on Lamai Beach that offers a sophisticated, five-star experience at a reasonable price point. You’ll find it poised right on the shores of Lamai Beach and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Expect elegant interiors and excellent Thai cuisine in the hotel restaurant.
This spacious and peaceful resort nestled in Lamai Bay is a perfect option for families. In addition to the private beach that’s ideal for your little ones to run and swim, Banyan Tree Samui features a Kids’ Club with games and crafts, along with babysitting services and a game room.
This luxurious, hillside sanctuary boasts an intimate, boutique feel, complete with an infinity pool and expansive views overlooking the beach. Here you’ll also find a full spa offering, onsite dining and exceptional service. It’s an idyllic spot for anyone looking for a quieter, design-forward retreat.
Mae Nam Beach is laid-back and authentic, perfect for those seeking boutique hotels and a slower pace.
Harry’s Bungalows

One of the best cheap hotels in Koh Samui, Harry’s Bungalows offers all the amenities a savvy traveler could need. This includes good showers, AC and free parking. There’s also a restaurant on site, a hot tub and each room comes with its own private balcony. These bungalows are just a short drive from other key attractions like the Tan Rua Waterfall.
At The Cosy Maenam Beach Resort, you’ll find a relaxing and friendly atmosphere that’s perfect for families. Rooms can come with extra beds on request to accommodate your little ones, and the shallow waters of the nearby beach are ideal for little swimmers. It’s an oasis for all ages!
W Koh Samui provides guests with stunning, private beachfront villas in a modern style. Located at the eastern edge of Mae Nam Beach, you’ll find unparalleled views of the Gulf of Thailand. Accommodations include an onsite restaurant and full spa facilities, plus it’s pet friendly.
Lipa Noi Beach is secluded and romantic, ideal for couples wanting peaceful privacy.
Sea Valley Resort
Best for: All-inclusive fans
Double rooms from $111 per night
Sea Valley Resort is ideal for families, couples or small groups looking for an all-inclusive experience in Koh Samui without breaking the bank. They offer jet ski rentals, and their concierge service specializes in helping you explore nearby shores and snorkeling experiences. They also have a children’s room with games and crafts for the kids.
For those seeking ultra-luxury within a short drive of Lipa Noi, the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is not to be missed. Guests can unwind in hillside villas, private pools and top-tier spa services, promising a secluded, romantic escape just north of the beach.
This eco-lodge is a great option for nature lovers. Surrounded by traditional Thai architecture and serene gardens, guests can treat themselves to yoga, healthy food and spa treatments. Its name is derived from the Sanskrit word for “heart chakra,” and this resort offers the ideal destination for cultivating well being and inner peace.
Located a short walk from BoPhut Beach, Little Stay Bophut is a quaint bed and breakfast that makes for a perfect homey stay for any budget traveler. This B&B also offers a dining service, including a la carte Thai breakfast. Rooms are well designed and spacious, and Little Stay offers easy access to both the night market and the airport.
Another filming location White Lotus fans will recognize, Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort comes outfitted with all the luxuries the traveler’s heart could desire. This includes intimate and elegant suites, award-winning spa facilities, secluded beachfront access and more. It brings family-friendly flair with family suites and The Tree House Kids’ Club.
At Hansar Samui Resort & Spa every room faces the sea. It’s just steps away from the Fisherman’s Village, so you get a bespoke boutique feel without sacrificing on location. If you stay here, don’t miss the chance to unwind in the Luxsa Spa, which specializes in holistic treatments drawing on Thai traditional medicine.
