Where to stay in Krabi? - For first-time visitors, Ao Nang Beach is the go-to base. You’ll find easy access to beaches, restaurants and tours. Railay Beach, Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi each provide their own unique experiences, depending on what you’re looking for.

Krabi is a province in southern Thailand that’s famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise waters and islands scattered across the Andaman Sea.

When most people think of Krabi, they imagine Ao Nang, known for its lively beaches. Maybe they know about Railay Beach, which is accessible only by boat and perfect for rock climbing and epic sunsets.

Krabi Town is the province capital and a great choice for budget travelers or anyone wanting access to local conveniences.

The island of Koh Lanta offers a more laid-back experience, with long stretches of white sand, great scuba diving spots and quieter villages.

Koh Phi Phi, meanwhile, is an island renowned for its vibrant and LGBTQ-friendly nightlife, stunning viewpoints and crystal-clear waters. It’s also home to Maya Bay, a must-visit for its iconic coastal scenery.

Both of these Thai islands are excellent for diving, snorkeling and exploring the surrounding marine parks.

Each area caters to different traveler needs: Ao Nang for convenience and variety, Railay for adventure and romance, Krabi Town for local life, and the islands for a more immersive beach escape.

Tips for your Krabi stay & how to get around.

Getting around Krabi can be a bit tricky, depending on where you are staying. Famous Railay Beach, as well as neighboring Tonsai Bay, can only be reached by boat. There are usually plenty of longtails waiting on Ao Nang Beach to take you, and it is a proper adventure. Many hotels will include a boat transfer with your booking.

Coming from Krabi Airport, you can take a taxi or a shuttle bus. The latter is the cheapest option, but it may take the longest as the bus only leaves when it is full, and you will have to drop off travelers on the way.

Using the Grab or Bolt app, Asia’s versions of Uber, is possible but they are not as readily available or as cheap as in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

To get to Koh Phi Phi or Koh Lanta, you will have to take a boat. Most operators will include a hotel transfer, which is usually the easiest and cheapest way to get to the pier.

Koh Phi Phi is unmotorized, so you will need to walk or get a boat transfer for longer distances. Definitely check where your hotel is located on the map to make sure you are not stranded on a secluded beach - unless, of course, that’s what you want!
