Bob Hope Airport opened on Memorial Day weekend in 1930. Lockheed bought the airport in 1940, expanded it in support of the war effort, and later operated it as a commercial airport. It sold the airport in 1978, and today BUR is operated by the city's airport authority. With flights up and down the West Coast as well as to mid-continent hubs such as Denver, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and even New York, BUR is a convenient airport for Angelinos. The airport serves 5 million passengers annually.
