In a year, over 8.5 million passengers fly in and out of Indianapolis International, and the runways of this airport witness over 222,000 takeoffs and landings. Indianapolis is the nation's tenth largest city, and Indianapolis Airport is the gateway to the city and to all of central Indiana.

Opened in 1931, for many years this airport was named Weir-Cook Airport in honor of a military aviator-Harvey Weir-Cook, of Wilkinson Indiana-who was killed in combat over New Caledonia during World War II. Later renamed Indianapolis International, this airport is today a major hub city for FedEx and a focus city for Air Tran Airways and Northwest Airlines. It is served by several other airlines (and their regional subsidiaries) including Air Canada, American Airlines/American Eagle, Continental Airlines/Continental Express, Delta Airlines/Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, Midwest Connect, KLM, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines/United Express, and US Airways/US Airways Express/America West.

Smoking is permitted in designated smoking areas only. There is a Smoking Lounge off a hallway to the left of Air Tran's ticket counters; smoking is also permitted outside the terminal buildings, but smokers must stay 30 or more feet away from building entrances.

WiFi Internet service is available throughout the terminal for a small fee, and dial-up is available at pay phones in the food court, and phones past security that have a seat attached. More information on WiFi is available at ATT Wifi.

A brand new Indianapolis airport is now under construction that will replace the current facility. It is currently scheduled to open in the latter part of 2008.

Directions

Getting to the airport from downtown Indianapolis requires a drive west on Interstate 70 to the "Airport Expy" Exit (Exit 75) and following the signs. Directions to the airport from several other locations may be found at Getting to the Airport.

Indianapolis International Airport has one main terminal consisting of two levels. There is a central food court, retail area, and four smallish sized concourses. Compared to much larger airports like Chicago O'Hare, Denver, or Atlanta-Hartsfield, Indianapolis International is relatively compact and simple to navigate.

Terminal Lower Level

The lower level houses the airline baggage claim areas and car rental counters. The pick-up points for shuttles, parking, and hotel courtesy vehicles are outside the lower level, and the Ground Transportation Center is just across from the Lower Level Terminal Drive in the parking garage structure.

Terminal Upper Level

The airline ticket counters, fast food and restaurant options, retail shopping, and several airport services are located on the terminal's upper level. Retail shopping outlets and most eating establishments are located outside the security check points.

There are four concourses on the upper level named A, B, C, and D. These concourses are used strictly for airline gates; their gate numbers, and the airlines that use them are as follows:

Concourse A houses gates A76 - A85. Northwest/LKM operates from Concourse A.

Concourse B houses gates B40 - 44. American/American Eagle and Delta operate from this concourse.          

Concourse C houses gates C33 - C36. AirTran, Continental, Frontier, Midwest Connect, and Southwest operate from Concourse C.

Concourse D houses gates D1 - D7. Air Canada, United, and US Airways/American West operate from this concourse.
