Indianapolis International Airport (IND) sits southwest of downtown Indianapolis, and it’s one of the more accessible airports in the Midwest. Clean, modern and surprisingly easy to navigate, it offers a welcome change of pace from the chaotic, crowded terminals of larger airports. Whether you’re heading to the Speedway or exploring Indy’s arts scene, this airport makes your journey smooth from the start.
Whether you’re in town for business or just for fun, you’ll appreciate the thoughtful design and efficient flow. IND is all about making your journey as smooth as possible, and this guide will help you make the most of it.
Getting to and from the airport
You’ll find plenty of ways to reach downtown Indianapolis from IND, from taxis and rideshares to rental cars and hotel shuttles. Located southwest of downtown, the trip typically takes around 15 minutes depending on traffic.
To catch a taxi, head to the curb on the lower level of the terminal right outside baggage claim. If no one is at the taxi stand, just press the green call button to summon a ride. Keep in mind there’s a minimum $15 fare from the airport, which is good to know for shorter trips.
For a rideshare like Uber or Lyft, you’ll meet your driver at the Ground Transportation Center on the first floor of the Terminal Garage. Drop-offs are even easier, just request a ride to the main terminal building.
I personally enjoy having my own vehicle to explore Indy neighborhoods at my own pace, so I tend to rent a car when I’m in town. You’ll find convenient on-site car rentals with ten options available at the Ground Transportation Center on the first floor of the Terminal Garage.
If you’re staying at a nearby hotel, you might be in luck. Many hotels within a five-mile radius of the airport offer complimentary shuttle services. Free is my favorite price. Just reach out to your hotel for shuttle details before you land.
Public transportation to the airport
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to get around, hop on the IndyGo Route 8 bus. This line travels from the airport straight to downtown Indianapolis’s Julia M. Carson Transit Center, following Washington Street. The ride takes about 45 minutes, and once you’re downtown, you can easily transfer to other routes to explore the city.
Pro tip: I learned the hard way that drivers don’t carry change. Be sure to have some quarters on hand or be willing to overpay a little for the convenience.
Security lines at IND
Security at IND is typically quick, and it’s one of the more efficient mid-size airports you’ll encounter. You’ll find two security checkpoints at IND, and you’ll want to arrive two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international flights, though you’re likely to zip through during non-peak times.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind, though. TSA PreCheck is only available on the A side of the terminal. If you have PreCheck, make sure to head to that side to avoid delays. Don’t worry if you end up on the wrong side, there’s a quick path from A to B if needed.
Digital displays at each checkpoint give real-time wait information, which is a lifesaver if you want to gauge how much time you’ll need. From my experience, it’s generally a smooth process. As always, it’s better to be early than to rush.
Eating and drinking at Indianapolis airport
Indianapolis International Airport is a surprising gem for craft beer lovers. If you’re like me and enjoy sampling local brews while waiting for a flight, you’re in for a treat. My first stop is always Sun King Tap Room near Gate B13, where you can sip on some of the best local beers in Indy. With plenty of TVs, it’s a great place to relax and catch a game before boarding.
Another great spot is The Tap Brewery in Concourse B. This Bloomington-based brewery offers a fantastic range of unique, award-winning beers. For those who love variety, the Circle City Beer Garden in Civic Plaza between the terminals is a must. It spotlights local and regional craft brewers, giving you a true taste of the thriving beer scene in Indiana.
When I’m more focused on kale than ale, I make a pit stop at The Farmers’ Market Featuring Indiana Grown by Gate B10. It’s refreshing to find a spot that offers locally sourced, fresh food. It’s my go-to when I’m craving a healthy meal before hopping on a plane.
IND covers all the dining bases, from Kosher-style deli fare and hearty burgers to vegan entrées and quick grab-and-go options. Whatever your dietary preferences or time constraints, you’ll find something that works.
IND lounges
The Delta Sky Club is a solid spot to relax before your flight. Located just past the security checkpoint in Concourse A, it offers complimentary beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), snacks, Wi-Fi, charging pads for your devices and computer workstations.
The lounge is on the smaller side, so it can get crowded during peak business travel hours. I like to stop by early before a morning flight to grab breakfast while it’s still quiet. Access is available to Delta Sky Club members and those with eligible tickets or credit cards.
For military personnel passing through IND, the USO Lounge offers a welcoming space to recharge. Located on the lower level near baggage claim carousel 3, the lounge provides free Wi-Fi, snacks and beverages, comfy chairs and entertainment options like video games and books. It’s open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and weekends from 11 am to 3 pm.
Wi-Fi at the airport
IND has fast, free Wi-Fi that’ll keep you connected throughout the terminal. Just connect to IND_PUBLIC_WIFI and you’re set to stream shows, catch up on work or browse while you wait.
Need to get some work done? You’ll find plenty of quiet corners to set up shop, with lots of outlets scattered around the terminal to keep your devices charged.
IND walking paths
One of my favorite features of the Indianapolis airport is the American Heart Association walking paths. I always try to get my steps in, especially if I know I’ll be sitting on a plane for hours. It’s a simple way to shake off that pre-flight sluggishness.
You can start with a quarter-mile path around the ticketing hall before security. Once you’re on the other side, each concourse has a half-mile lap. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can take on a 1.1-mile lap around both concourses. It’s a great way to squeeze in some movement and explore the terminal.
Pet relief areas
Traveling with your furry companion? You’ll find convenient pet relief areas at IND for service animals, pets and hardworking law enforcement dogs. These spots feature artificial grass, cute miniature fire hydrants and a pop-up sprinkler system that makes clean-up a breeze. I love the playful touch of the mini fire hydrants.
You’ll find pet relief areas in both Concourse A and Concourse B after security, as well as pre-security options in the North and South Gardens.
