Indianapolis International Airport (IND) might just be one of the best-kept secrets in the Midwest. Clean, modern and surprisingly easy to navigate, it offers a welcome change of pace from the chaotic, crowded terminals of larger airports. Not far from downtown Indianapolis, IND is a gateway to everything Indy has to offer, from the roar of the Speedway to the city's buzzing arts and culture scene.
Whether you're in town for business or pleasure, you'll appreciate the airport's thoughtful design, efficient security, ample parking options and abundance of amenities. IND is all about making your journey as smooth as possible, and this guide will help you make the most of it.
If you’re looking for the most budget-friendly way to get to and from the airport, hop on the IndyGo Route 8 bus. This line travels from the airport straight to downtown Indianapolis, following Washington Street. The ride takes about 45 minutes. Once downtown, you’ll arrive at the transit center, where you can easily transfer to other routes to explore the city.
Pro tip: I learned the hard way that drivers don’t carry change, so be sure to have some extra quarters on hand or be willing to overpay.
Getting to and from Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is pretty straightforward. Just 7 miles southwest of downtown, it typically takes around 25 minutes to get to the city center, depending on traffic.
To catch a taxi, head to the curb on the lower level of the terminal outside baggage claim. If no one is at the taxi stand, just press the green call button. There's a minimum fare from the airport, so keep that in mind for shorter trips.
For a rideshare like Uber or Lyft, simply head to the Ground Transportation Center on the first floor of the Terminal Garage for pickup. Drop-offs are straightforward too – just request a ride to the main terminal building.
I personally enjoy having my own vehicle to explore Indy’s neighborhoods at my own pace, so I tend to rent a car when I am in town. IND has convenient on-site car rentals with 10 options available at the Transportation Center on the first floor of the Terminal Garage.
If you're staying at a nearby hotel, you might be in luck. More than 20 hotels within a 10-mile radius of the airport offer complimentary shuttle services. Free is by far the most affordable option on the list. Just reach out to your hotel for shuttle details before you land.
IND is a traveler-friendly, mid-size airport. With 2 security checkpoints, the typical wait is surprisingly short – often less than 3 minutes. While the airport recommends arriving 2 hours early, you’re likely to zip through, especially during non-peak times.
However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. TSA PreCheck is only available on the A side of the terminal. If you have PreCheck, make sure to head to that side to avoid delays, though there is a quick path from A to B if needed.
Digital displays at each checkpoint give real-time wait information, which is a lifesaver if you want to gauge how much time you'll need. From my experience, it’s generally a smooth process. As always, though, it’s better to be early than to rush.
If you find yourself with some time to kill at the airport and want to stream your favorite TV show, you’re all set. IND boasts the fastest Wi-Fi of any airport in the country. Just go to IND PUBLIC WI-FI, connect and go. The Wi-Fi is free and reliable.
Need to get some work done? You’ll find plenty of quiet corners to set up shop. There are also plenty of outlets scattered around the terminal to keep your devices charged.
The Delta Sky Club is a solid spot to relax before your flight. Located just past the security checkpoint in Concourse A, it offers all the essentials to make your wait time more enjoyable, like complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, Wi-Fi and charging pads for your devices. If you need to catch up on work, there are computer workstations, personalized travel assistance and even printing facilities.
The lounge is smaller than most of Delta’s lounges, so it can get crowded during peak business travel hours in the morning and late afternoon. I like to stop by early before a morning flight to grab one of their fresh breakfast options while it's still quiet. Access is available to Delta Sky Club members and those flying with eligible tickets or credit cards.
For military personnel passing through IND, the USO Lounge offers a welcoming space to recharge before a long journey. Located on the lower level near baggage claim carousel 3, the lounge provides a variety of comforts, including free Wi-Fi, complimentary snacks and beverages, comfortable lounge chairs and entertainment options like televisions with video games, books, magazines and playing cards. It is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm.
Traveling with your furry companion? IND has you covered with its convenient pet relief areas, designed for service animals, pets and hardworking law enforcement dogs. These areas feature artificial grass, cute miniature fire hydrants and a pop-up sprinkler system that makes clean-up a breeze by washing away liquid waste. I love the playful touch of the mini fire hydrants – they add a bit of charm while keeping things practical.
You’ll find one pet relief area in Concourse A across from Harry & Izzy's near the International Arrivals area. Another is in Concourse B, just across from Gate B5 near Tinker Coffee.
One of my favorite features of the Indianapolis airport is the American Heart Association walking paths. I always try to get my steps in, especially if I know I'll be sitting on a plane for hours. It’s such a simple way to shake off that pre-flight sluggishness, and the airport offers great options to stretch your legs.
You can start with a quarter-mile path around the ticketing hall before heading through security. Once you're on the other side, each concourse has a half-mile lap. If you are feeling ambitious, you can take on a 1.1-mile lap around both concourses. I love being able to squeeze in this movement before a long travel day. Plus, it’s a great way to explore the terminal and discover new spots to grab a snack or coffee.
Indianapolis International Airport is a surprising gem for craft beer lovers. If you’re like me and enjoy sampling local brews while waiting for a flight, you’re in for a treat with 3 options. My first stop is always Sun King Tap Room near Gate B13, where you can sip on some of Indy’s finest local beers. With plenty of TVs, it’s the perfect place to relax and catch a game before boarding.
Another great spot is The Tap Brewery by Gate B17. This Bloomington-based brewery offers a fantastic range of unique, award-winning beers. For those who love variety, the Circle City Beer Garden in Civic Plaza between the terminals is a must. It spotlights local and regional craft brewers, giving you a true taste of Indiana’s thriving beer scene.
When I’m more focused on kale than ale, I make a pit stop at The Farmers’ Market Featuring Indiana Grown by Gate B10. Airports aren’t known for healthy eating, so it’s refreshing to find a spot that offers locally sourced, fresh food. It’s my go-to when I’m craving a healthy meal before hopping on a plane.
Of course, IND has something for everyone when it comes to dining. Whether you’re in the mood for an Indianapolis specialty at a Kosher-style deli, a hearty burger or a vegan entrée, you’ll find it here. And if you're short on time, there are plenty of grab-and-go options available to take on board with you.
