America is turning 238 this year, and many Americans plan to celebrate by taking in some of the top sights and cultural events throughout the country.

The top trending destination for this Independence Day is New Orleans, with a 142% increase in flight search activity. New Orleans is usually popular, but the steep jump could be due to the Essence Music Festival, boasting a lineup of artists like Prince, Lionel Richie, Mary J Blige and The Roots. Average airfare was 30% higher, so if it’s out of your budget, we suggest driving if you’re not afraid of a little road trip.

A large number of people are sticking with the traditional red, white and blue this Independence Day with visits to America’s most historic cities. Flight search activity to Boston and Washington D.C. increased 33% and 29%, respectively. Average airfare to the nation’s capital was down slightly, making it a great spot for travelers who don’t mind sharing the Lincoln Memorial.

And some Americans plan to celebrate the fourth in…Canada. Vancouver and Montreal made our top 10 trending destinations for July 4th weekend, with 46% and 27% increases in flight search activity. Average airfares to both cities fell slightly, so they’re not just tremendously beautiful cities, but flying there is a relative bargain. Just don’t tell Uncle Sam we said so.
