If you wish to check a bag for your trip from Raleigh to Charlotte, you should travel on the Piedmont train. Piedmont is the only one that has a checked baggage service for this route in addition to the carry-on item allowance. As a passenger of Piedmont, you’re allowed four checked bags where only two of them are free. These checked items must weigh under 50 pounds each. You are also allowed two carry-on bags and two personal items.
There is free Wi-Fi available on both Piedmont and the Carolinian trains as well as the Crescent train. This way you may work on board or browse the web. However, the complimentary connection is basic and should be limited to browsing online. As for the train stations in Raleigh and Charlotte, neither have free Wi-Fi in the train hall or waiting areas.
The Café cars and service is available on most Amtrak routes including the ones from Raleigh to Charlotte. The Café offers a wide variety of snacks and beverages you can purchase onboard at any time. As for the Crescent train, if you choose the route with a transfer in Greensboro, it has a flexible dining option for those passengers in the sleeping cars with a private room.
All of the three Amtrak routes traveling from Raleigh to Charlotte—Piedmont, Carolinian and Crescent—allow small pets on board with the passengers. The pet must have a pet carrier and not weigh more than 20 pounds including the weight of the carrier. This carrier also counts as one of the two available carry-on items passengers are allowed to travel with.
