Charlotte car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Charlotte
Verified travelerJun 2026
Better document everything for pick up and drop off since they clearly aren't able to accurately document when a car is returned.
Verified travelerApr 2026
The pick up line for Budget is crazy long. If you can get the fastbreak, self check-in, or pick your own car to avoid going to the rental desk, do it.
Verified travelerNov 2025
Only rent from companies that are located directly at the airport.
CrystalJul 2025
Your best bet to getting the best rates and attention is using a resource outside of the airports if you are able to do so. The airport rental process is much more stressful.
JasonJul 2025
Book the car early, or you will pay more.
Verified travelerApr 2025
Book early and be ready for a different car than you booked and some wait time.
RalphApr 2025
Keep your paperwork so you have proof of initial charge!
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Try to call and see if they have the vehicle ready (if they answer). I wouldn't wait until the schedule pickup time.
Verified travelerDec 2024
Budget uses old logo signage throughout airport facility so keep that in mind, don’t focus on seeing current logo
Verified travelerOct 2024
Plan for airport traffic as NU car is 10 minutes away from the airport (with no traffic) and the CLT security lines were well over 45 min long.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Find this company and don’t use the ones at the airport, which are much more expensive. This is less than a mile from the airport and has a shuttle.
AmaryllisJul 2024
Check in using the QR code on the sign to speed up process.
PhilJun 2024
Just be sure to go to the new car rental counters/lobby in the renovated parking deck.
RickyJul 2024
Try to rent at the airport if possible.
AmandaJun 2024
Don’t rent a car last minute at the airport. It’s a total rip off!!
Verified travelerMar 2024
Make sure to call the rental car company to verify that they have a car available for you when you arrive, despite having a confirmation number.
Verified travelerMay 2024
Off-premises rental car shuttles are located at Bay One and you need to call the agency to let them know you have arrived.
Verified travelerMay 2024
Plan ahead. The roads are a bit confusing when you’re leaving the airport.
StephanieMar 2024
Book a midsize car or SUV. Parking can be difficult in Charleston.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Make sure the car’s AC works
Verified travelerFeb 2024
The counter person was very nice and helpful. Car was clean and comfortable.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Allow an extra hour after finishing your rentalagreement for a car to be ready
ChrisDec 2023
Know what you are doing before you arrive.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Why rent a regular car for your leisure time when you could be having a great experience in a nice clean luxury car for around or in my case, a cheaper price. Enjoy life
Verified travelerOct 2023
Just let them understand they close usually around 6pm. Otherwise, an excellent deal
Verified travelerNov 2023
Don’t rent with Budget. Driving in Charlotte was considerably moderate.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Rent from the closest location that you are staying.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Rent via the airport not an offsite location.
StephenJun 2023
Pickup was straightforward and convenient to exiting the airport. Dropoff was even easier. Charlotte has great roads and good signage, I found it easy to navigate.
KenJul 2023
Try Hertz. They have automated check in kiosks. No lines!!!
Verified travelerAug 2023
Make sure company have a car and if through a third party make sure credit transfer to another company
Verified travelerMay 2023
It was Sunday and the only option I had was airport location. They should have different locations for pickup. Otherwise, every thing was great.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Charlotte

  • Driving in Charlotte is the most convenient and effective way of getting to know the city, as all the major interest points are pretty scattered across a 15-mile range. Downtown Charlotte, which is known as Uptown, gets quite busy, but just a short ride away you'll find the cool North Davidson St. and Plaza Midwood neighborhoods. A car is the perfect option for those looking to explore other destinations outside the city — including the US National Whitewater Center, an outdoor recreation facility that sits 15 miles west of Uptown and offers several outdoor activities. Another popular destination is Lake Norman, which is only 30 minutes outside of Charlotte.
  • All the big car rental agencies, including Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz, can be found at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)'s Consolidated Rental Car Facility, which is in the Level 2 lobby next to the Hourly Parking Deck, right in front of the Arrivals terminal.
  • Uptown is one of the most crowded areas in the city, particularly when there are big events going on, such as a Carolina Panthers game, so beware of pedestrians if you're driving there. The whole of Charlotte gets pretty packed during NASCAR season, so you may want to avoid going to shopping malls in the city center. The Interstate 485 (I-485) is a highway loop that encircles the city, and, while it may be a little difficult to navigate, it is usually less congested than the Interstate 77, which flows north-south on the western side of Charlotte.
  • Although traffic is manageable, roads are usually fairly busy throughout Charlotte during peak hours, so avoid rush hour traffic both in the morning (between 7:30 and 10 a.m.) and afternoon (between 4 and 7 p.m.) if you don't want to be stuck driving for longer than needed. The I-77 in particular tends to get packed during rush hour, in which case it's best to take the 385 loop around the city. When there's a major sporting event taking place, it is recommended that you refrain from driving in the Uptown area.
  • One important thing to know about before heading out in car rentals in Charlotte is the seatbelt laws in the state of North Carolina. Every passenger in a vehicle over 16 years of age must wear a seatbelt no matter where they ride in the vehicle. Any child riding a vehicle less than eight years old or 80 pounds in weight must be riding in an approved child seat or booster seat. All children must ride in the rear of the vehicle.
  • It is important to remember before driving in car rentals in Charlotte is that you may not text and drive while operating a vehicle. North Carolina is a primary enforcement state, which means you can get pulled over for texting while driving even if you are doing nothing else wrong. You can use your phone hands-free to make and receive phone calls or use a GPS in your phone. It is important to remember that wedging a phone between your head and your shoulder is not considered a hands-free manner for using your phone. You may also not have the phone in your lap and look at the phone as you drive.
  • The city of Charlotte is a very popular destination because of the number of great annual events the city hosts every year. One of the best reasons to hop behind the wheel of Charlotte car rentals is to head to the North Carolina Brewers and Music Festival. This event occurs every year in May on Rural Hill in Huntersville. Another very popular event that makes a great reason to get Charlotte car rentals is to head to Speed Street in May. This is a three-day event that leads up to the car race that occurs every year at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Charlotte for $29 or less
  • Medium rental cars in Charlotte are around 28% cheaper than other car types, on average

I had a long wait at the check in to pick up the car. Their internet was down. This was not their fault, and the lady worked very hard to move the check in line. Once I got my car I could tell it had been smoked in before me. It also had fairly high mileage at 51,000 miles. It was a good value and experience. I would certainly use Dollar Rental Car again.

I returned the car when I was supposed to. Three days later I get a text asking when I'm going to return the car. I call them and they say I never returned it. Now I'm having to jump through hoops trying to prove I returned it to them. How do you lose a car that is in airport parking lot!??!!? Will be taking this into consideration the next time I'm renting a vehicle for sure.

No cars were available. Management at airport location did not inform the long list of customers until I asked what he status was. I ended up having to cancel and use a Taxi. Wasted 1.5 hours in this process. Will not use Budget again and will not book any personal travel through Kayak again. The vendor Kayak used to source this rental never answered my calls and their number and email was used for the rental versus mine. Made it impossible to call them and cancel the reservation or attempt to switch to new car rental. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had with renting a car. I will also be making friends and family aware of this so they too do not leverage Budget and Kayak for future reservations.

The car was excellent and the employee was working so hard but it took a full hour and a half (90+ minutes) of standing in line to pick up the car because there was only one person working the rental desk (at noon!). It was the longest rental car line I've ever experienced and it delayed the rest of the trip. I wish there had been more employees working.

The price was great, but the vehicle was not good (get what you pay for). The Mirage is bottom of the barrel IMO. Inside of windshield was filthy, making it difficult to see when the sun hit it. The vehicle wasn’t ready when we arrived and we had to wait around for 45 minutes. And the vehicle wouldn’t take fuel into the tank except at a trickle. And I think they knew this and that’s why it took 45 mins for them to fill the tank.

Title: Disappointing Experience at Ace Wilkinson Blvd If you’re considering renting from here, be aware of the following issues: Limited Mileage: When booking online with the unlimited mileage option, there are restrictions on which states you can drive to. At this location, unlimited miles are limited to only the Carolinas and Virginia. If you plan to travel to Georgia or other states, additional fees apply. I’m aware that other rental agencies (not all) also do this but still… don’t call it unlimited if it’s not unlimited. Hidden Fees: Upon pickup, I also encountered several unexpected charges. For example, despite not using airport services, an airport concierge fee was added to the charges. When questioned, the local office couldn’t provide a satisfactory explanation for this particular fee, so I did not bother to follow-up with questions for several of the other fees that also seemed like padding, these fees increased my total bill to more than 1/3 of the original booking price. Defective Vehicle: This was the most concerning issue. What happened? I booked a full-size sedan, while doing the walk around inspection, I noticed that one of the front bumper clips was missing, causing the end section of the bumper to hang loose enough that the wind could cause further damage while driving. When I brought this to the rep's attention, he acted like this was not a cause for concern. I had to insist that this was unacceptable and that I could not take responsibility for a defective vehicle. He then tried to replace the vehicle with a smaller vehicle type. The issue here is that he wanted to charge me the same rate for a smaller car and insisted that this was the only vehicle he had available. I felt that it was unfair to charge at the same rate, so I ended up cancelling and had to make other plans. So no, I would not recommend.

The pickup shuttle ride from Charlotte airport on Monday 4/28/2025 around 11.00 am, never arrived at assigned location to take us to their off-site rental location. Their office phone number goes direct to their voicemail. I googled and found a national phone number associated with them. She found out after 10 minutes waiting that there is no shuttle today because she is not getting hold of anyone there either. I called for Uber after 45 minutes waiting, we got to that offsite Easirent Car Rent. Some inexperienced young guys out of an eye-sore unorganized office were running the shit-show like headless chickens. No eye contact, no greeting and no apology for us waiting at the airport for not being picked up at all! I asked to see the person in charge, and if they got my car ready. A young white guy who was not so attentive to start with, hesitantly introduced himself Daniel and said he is doing the job for many people there.... My strong suggestion is to STAY AWAY from this place unless you want to be late or no show up for your meetings or be messed up with your plannings.

Carwiz was an interesting experience. First, when I tried calling there office for a shuttle from the airport to their building, it wasn’t allowing me to call. I had to use a landline at the airport information center. Secondly, the line was extremely backed up as they only had one person manning their virtual checkout system. The in person people were not allowed to assist with issuing vehicles, everything was automated. My experience was okay and turn in was quick due to an after hours drop off but people before me were having issues with completing paperwork to receive their vehicles. They also mentioned hidden fees and disappointed with their customer service.

Rental was actually conducted remotely and the agent's Internet connection kept dropping. I was forced to sign and initial a document I couldn't see so I had no idea what I was signing. I wasn't told that foreign third-party liability insurance was not acceptable so I was forced to pay even more for the rental so there was no real savings from the alternatives. The pickup point at the airport was not clearly described so I wasted time waiting in the wrong location.

Very bad rental company I never had the opportunity to rent the car because of their bylaws which was I had no way of knowing. I will never use this company again. In fact I will never use kayak again because you recommended them to me.

My flight from Chicago to Charlotte experience a 4 hour delayed due to storms and the closing of the airport in CLT (temporarily). By the time I landed in Charlotte, CarWiz was closed. I called and called and all I got was a recording stating the office is closed till next morning. I had to scramble and get a car at an astronomical price. I am NOT PAYING for anything with carWiz and I better not get charge for anything regarding this disaster of an experience.

After inquiring about discounts for activity military, I was told they had none. A week later they presented me an offer for $380 for 14 days which was about half of what they told me the week prior. Then when I went to go pick it up, they added an additional 390 in different fees. I don’t know if they try hoodwink everybody or just people in the military…

Full-size SUV

KAYAK
I reserved an SUV (Nissan Pathfinder) for a 3 day rental. When I arrived, the agency only had 2 cars; a minivan and a Hyundai Sonata. Neither one fit my needs. After 10 minutes of discussion, a Volkswagen Taos was returned. The agents prepped it for me but provided a disclaimer that the car's interior was dirty. I agreed but due to limited time, had to take it. The car felt undersized for what I rented but I was told over and over that it was in the same car class. I'm still not sure about that as it felt more like a compact SUV.

Front desk rude, 15 min off site, just my experience but I’d never use them again.
