Serving more than 36 million passengers per year, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport opened in 1929 after two years of construction. The airport consists of three separate buildings (McNamara Terminal, Smith Terminal, and Berry Terminal) and the on site Westin Hotel. While it is a non-smoking airport, smokers can find an adequate smoking area at Detroit 500 Sports Bar or Fox Skybox Sports Bar within McNamara Terminal. Easily reached by I-94 or Highway 275, passengers driving to the airport should not have a hard time finding their terminal. Downtown Detroit is approximately 20 miles to the east.

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport serves more than thirty airlines, a mix of charter, commuter, major, and cargo companies. There are close to 20,000 parking spaces in the variety of lots and garages that can easily handle daily traffic. Most passengers in this area fly onward to Chicago to catch other connections. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is the 11th busiest in North America and the 17th busiest in the world in terms of passengers passing through the airport. J.D. Powers and Associates named the airport second in passenger satisfaction within the nation. The airport holds steady at number three on the Airport Council International's list of best airports in North America.

Currently, the airport is working with area residents to help soundproof their homes against airport noise. They are also building a new terminal to replace the older Davey and Smith Terminals that struggle to keep up with the changing times. Davey Terminal has been torn down, and Smith Terminal will follow when the new terminal is ready in 2008.

Directions

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is very easy to find. Drivers will most likely take either the 275 or 94 west of Dearborn and Detroit. Exit 15 of I-275 brings the driver to Eureka Road. Take Eureka Road west and watch for airport signs. Turn onto John Dingell Drive and follow it north. From here follow the signs for the individual terminals.

The I-94 also borders the airport. Drivers should take exit 198 to either the East or South Service Drive. From here, follow airport signs to reach the proper terminal.

Berry Terminal

The rectangular Berry Terminal serves charter air flights. Airlines include Allegro, Champion Air, Discovery, Miami Air, Omni Air International, Ryan International Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Trans Meridian, and USA 3000. International and Domestic Baggage Claims are in the southern end of the building and Ticketing/Check-In are in the northern end. Gates 1, 2, 3, and 4 are located in arms extending from the main building on an upper level.

McNamara Terminal

The southernmost terminal, McNamara Terminal is shaped much like the number four. There are three floors in this terminal: International Arrivals (Ground Level), Baggage Claim (Level Two), and then Ticketing/Check-In (Level Three).

McNamara Terminal's southern concourse is more like a long hallway and houses gates A1 through A38. The concourse extension is divided into two areas B and C. Located off the western side of the main hallway, concourses B and C house gates B1 through B7 and C1 through C35. The hallway at the top of the building, concourse A, houses gates A40 to A78. An express tram runs from the center of the building to other areas in the airport. Airlines served by McNamara Terminal include ASA, British Airways, Comair, Continental Airlines, Continental Express, Delta Airlines, Lufthansa, Northwest Airlines, Northwest Airlink, KLM, and Royal Jordanian.

Smith Terminal

Smith Terminal contains the baggage claim and ticketing area to the east and then a number of concourses split off in different directions. Concourse A houses gates A1 through A14. In the center of the main baggage/ticketing area is a hallway leading to the round Concourse B where passengers will find gates B3 to B15. At the top of the baggage and ticketing area is a hallway leading to Concourse C where gates C1 through C8 are located. Smith Terminal serves Air Canada, American Airlines, America West, Frontier, Independence Air, Southwest, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, U.S. Airways, and U.S. Airways Express.
