Founded in 1941, the airport was originally known as Sunset Field and then changed to Geiger Field during the war. It would be 1960 when the airport's current name, Spokane International Airport, was announced. The airport consists on one terminal that has three different concourses and around two dozen gates. There are two runways right now, but a third may be added in the next decade. Passenger growth has been steady for the past decade with more than three million passengers using the airport last year alone. There is one terminal on the airport grounds, but improvements are regularly being made and plans are to add a new terminal on to the current terminal and add a number of new parking garages. Wi-Fi Internet is available throughout the airport making it easy for passengers to check their email or access the Internet between flights. Smokers with long layovers will need to come up with an alternative to a cigarette. Laws in Washington state prohibit smoking on the airport grounds. DirectionsSpokane International Airport is easily reached via the I-90. Those taking the I-90 West will travel to the 277/US 2 West exit. Follow signs for the US 2 and merge into the lanes that turn into the US 2. Watch signs for the airport exit and take that exit. When the road forks, take the left fork onto Airport Drive and follow signs to the terminal. Drivers who are taking the I-90 East will take the 277B/US 2 West exit. Follow the above directions from the 277B/US 2 West to the airport. The US-195 is another option. Drivers will take the US-195 North to the I-90 West. From here, drivers will follow the directions found above. Main TerminalSpokane International Airport is one large building that contains three concourses. When entering the terminal, there will be a baggage claim area nearby. Those using the left entrance will find Baggage Claim 1, 2, and 3 to their left. Beyond the baggage claim area are the rental car counters. Concourse A and B are in a V-shaped extension near the baggage claim area. To the left the rectangular shaped hallway making up Concourse A houses gates 11, 12, 13, 14, and 16. The right side of the V is Concourse B. Concourse B houses gates 1 through 10. Those entering from the right near Ground Transportation will find Baggage Claim 3 and 4 directly in front of them. To the right is Concourse C and Gates 21A, 21B, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 30, 31, and 32. Ticketing is all the way to the right of the terminal. Concourse A and B share a security checkpoint that is located right before the V shaped building extension. Concourse A serves Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and US Airways. Concourse B serves Delta Airlines, Delta Connection, United Airlines, and United Express.
