They booked my rooms far away from each other. Next time I'll be aware of that. Staff was great!
I traveled with my son, who has autism and the staff was awesome. They made sure I had everything I needed. A little tip * change money as soon as you get there, the banks are always full of people.
We have stayed in Antigua many times and this was by far the best hotel we have stayed in. The room was clean and very pretty. The two pools are amazing, the staff is friendly, the location is great, and the food is delicious. We will never stay anywhere else in Antigua!
We spent a week at the Porta in April. The gardens, pool and grounds are absolutely gorgeous, including a picture perfect volcano view from pool and restaurant and a delightful bar. The staff were uniformly pleasant, helpful and courteous and the room was very comfortable, including a corner fireplace we enjoyed using. We only ate at the restaurant once, as most of the meals were served buffet style, but the breakfast included myriad fresh fruits, juices, cereal and a lengthy hot table serving made to order omelettes, tamales, plantains, pancakes etc and was very good. One comment, merely for information, is that this is not really an 'intimate' little hotel, it's more like a resort with dedicated spaces for weddings and receptions and is clearly heavily used for this purpose, and I admit I can see why! Looks like it would be good for kids with a nice pool play area and a daily list of kid-friendly activities. Also, it's in a good area, quiet at night despite being not far from the central park. Our only (minor) complaint was that they only supplied 2 towels at a time, which given the heat/humidity didn't dry out by the time we wanted to use them again, so we ended up having to ask for fresh towels everyday instead of being able to re-use.
For the past 30 years I have traveled to Guatemala a couple of times a year- lived there for 12 years. When in Antigua I always stay at Porta Hotel Antigua. I have never had a problem of any kind at this hotel. Secure parking is now located 2 blks away, but still convenient. The former secure parking area is now an addition to the hotel - and is called Meson del Obispo - all premium rooms. I have no idea what the cost is over there...connected by an underground tunnel. My most recent room cost in early June '08 was $- single or dbl occupancy. Excellent security - single level and one entry only to the hotel. They are currently replacing the flooring in the usual reception area, but this is no inconvenience at all. The hotel is located about 4 blocks south (toward Volcan Agua) of the central park. Very easy walk. A laundramet is 1 blk away - several ATM's on central park. We've also stayed at the more expensive Casa Santo Domingo - both equally good, but for the money, Hotel Antigua is your best bet. Breakfast buffet Thrus-Sun (I think). RLM
