The upscale Arizona Grand in South Phoenix is a modern resort haven that’s a hit with families for its topnotch fitness, fun, and dining facilities. A $13 million 2017 renovation gave the 744 one, two, and three-bedroom suites a luxurious homey feel, but the hotel is still known for its amazingly large water park.

The Arizona Grand is nestled against South Mountain in South Phoenix, just off the I-10 Freeway and Baseline Road. Fast food chains and convenience stores are within the immediate area and Sea Life Arizona Aquarium and Legoland in Arizona Mills shopping mall are also nearby. Within 15 minutes, guests can also be at Canyon Trailhead, South Mountain Preserve, the largest municipal park in the world, and Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.

There is a choice of chic residential-style one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites and villas offered at the resort. The 2017 renovations brought laminate hardwood flooring, and tech features such as USB ports, flat-screen TVs, Staycast media streaming, clock radios, and Bluetooth speaker. All other convenient amenities and necessities are also provided in the rooms. Villas are more luxurious options with more space, full kitchens, and more amenities.

The grand-scale resort amenities include the popular Oasis Water Park, spanning seven acres, and resort guests also receive four water passes per room. The waterpark offers a lazy river, several slides, a wave pool, giant hot tub, and water spray deck. There are a bar and grill onsite with a range of kid and adult drinks and food. In addition to the water park, six heated outdoor pools, a 20,000 square foot athletic club, a full-service spa, and golf course. Restaurants on-site range from bars and cafes to Mexican far and western family-friendly atmospheres.

This locations website is a little misleading. Direct quote from their website. “The residential-style look of all 744 guest suites”. We were in a studio, not a suite. Pictures of the suites on the website were not what we stayed in. Upon arrival were greeted out front by a couple of friendly attendants. They directed us where to park for checking in and then where to go for the check in process. As we entered the lobby area, it was very busy and there were two sizable lines. The desk had every attendant busy helping guests. Their manager was actively managing the lines and directing people to make things move smoothly and as quickly as they could. When our turn came around we were greeted politely by a young g lady. She proceeded to get our information and to give us information about the resort. She explained we were going to one of the newest buildings and we would like where we were staying. She gave us directions to the building we were staying in and where to park. She also shared information about the water park. She was very helpful and pleasant. We proceeded to find the building and a parking spot. We got lucky and found a fairly close spot to the building. Parking can be a challenge as there aren’t a lot of spots, but we mostly found spots except once fairly close to the building. When we entered our room, we noticed first thing on the carpeted area lots of crumbs and a couple of peanuts on the floor. It appeared as if the carpet hadn’t been vacuumed in a while. I did notice rust on the air conditioning vent(probably could use some touch up paint) and the headboard of the bed had oil stains or some kind of faint stains on it. The building and room did not appear to be new or newer as described. The rest of the room appeared to be cleaner and more in order. We were bummed that it was smaller than we expected but made the best of it. That evening I received a questionnaire on check in and how the room looked. I was honest and described the carpet situation. The next day around noon we received a call asking about or feedback. The representative apologized and explained we could move rooms, but we were already settled and didn’t want to pack up and move. The representative understood and then offered to wave the resort fees. We really appreciated that offer, we truly weren’t looking for anything other than acknowledgment and informing management of the room. We did like being right outside the water park. We liked being able to hear the music. Our two biggest complaints would be the misleading website and the dirty floor. We really enjoyed the water park. We liked the location of the resort and proximity to food places. We probably would not stay at this resort again.

2.5 Poor
Pros:Not much to like. Except the property had mature trees.
Cons:Staff service was shockingly bad. The property claimed there was an upgrade ... still old and dirty looking. Price of food was very high. They call this a resort ... more like a glorified hotel. Would not recommend this property ti anyone.

8.2 Very good
Pros:Location was good, hotel was clean, staff was friendly and responsive. We were given an upgraded suite. I would consider returning. The fitness center was very nice.
Cons:As a 4-star resort, I expected just a bit more. Water pressure was poor, not all of the shower features functioned properly, dirty towels were left by the cleaning staff outside our door for extended periods. The $50 + tax resort fee per day seemed a bit excessive - especially when the water park was only open on the weekend and we were not able to use it.

4.2 Mediocre
Cons:Many reviews have the Arizona Grand Resort on the top of their list, but the truth is the options are few, the facilities are dated, and the atmosphere has very little energy. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice hotel, however, in terms of resorts, it does not belong in the same conversation with any of the Scottsdale or Sedona facilities. Very disappointing considering what was being sold. A three-night reservation, we left after one evening.

5.4 Fair
Pros:The hotel is beautiful. It has great potential but they are far from meeting it. If they remodeled the place, they certainly are not finished. The housekeeping staff were great.
Cons:They do not have supplies/equipment to handle the capacity. We needed another blanket and were told they ran out. They do not have nearly enough chairs at the pools. There were 10 lounge chairs at our pool. I know they cannot provide enough chairs for every guest but there is absolutely no excuse why there were not at least 30-40 chairs at each pool. There was certainly room for that many. People at the pools were angry. The teenagers that work at the oasis pool were rude. Instead of being a relaxing experience, it was over-crowded and stressful.

Cons:cost of food & drinks to expensive
A
8.5 Very good
Pros:Newly remodeled, spacious, comfortable suite in beautiful oasis.
Cons:Tasteless coffee forces you to go to the Starbucks counter or dining room. Be sure to turn on the exhaust fan in the shower and/or keep the bathroom door mostly closed when showering. Learned that the hard way when the smoke alarm over the bathroom door was set off. According to the woman at the front desk, some of them are sensitive and can be set off so you have to open the terrace door to get it to stop.
A
6.0 Okay
Pros:As always the Weather during Spring Break is wonderful. The general layout of the resort is wonderful. This is my 3rd trip here since 2009 and we want to make it a annual thing for myself and my kids,
Cons:This trip we experienced a lot of horrible service, missed room services, not being attended to while at one of their restaurants. the exception was the last night we were there. I spent $5000 over a course of 6 nights we stayed..I would expect way better service when ones pays this much. Im considering not coming back due to the service not matching the price I paid. I also feel the resort could use a bit of updating and repair. Eep in the room when we had burnout light bulbs and once again they were never replaced on our stay.

10.0 Wonderful
Cons:Bar closed at midnight

5.1 Fair
Cons:The waterpark was supposed to open on February 18th per the website and a phone call to the hotel - so we booked from February 20th to 24th. What they failed to inform us was that the Waterpark was only open the weekend before and the weekend afterwards. When we arrived on the Monday the person who greeted us and showed us to our room talked about the Waterpark being great and only later did we find out it was closed. We got 2 nights of the facility fee refunded, however the other 2 nights were not refunded and we chose this hotel especially because of the waterpark. Very disappointing.
