We just finished the longest, noisiest election cycle in the history of the United States. And, regardless of how you voted, it’s apparent that in its aftermath travelers are looking for a vacation. On the morning after Election Day, our site saw an increase in searches that began at 6am EST and spiked to a 15% increase at 9am. In comparison with last Wednesday, that increase accounts for hundreds of thousands of additional searches.
The top cities that saw the greatest increase in interest were:
- Zurich (up 74%)
- Dusseldorf (up 65%)
- Montreal (up 29%)
- Sao Paulo (up 22%)
- Toronto (up 20%)
While these popular cities aren’t entirely surprising, what’s interesting is that no beach destinations made the list. Both Montreal and Toronto offer a quick international vacation, while Switzerland is known for being peaceful (and politically neutral). Dusseldorf is popular for international direct flights because it serves as an easy stop-over to travel to the rest of Europe. Sao Paulo emerges as an international urban hotspot whose warmer temps are giving travelers a dose of much-needed Vitamin D as North America starts to turn dark and dreary.
So, no matter what the future holds, one thing is certain: Americans are prepared to dust off those passports and embrace international travel. And we’ll be here to provide the information they need to make the right decisions. Travel Problem Solved.
