Pros: Great place: if you book 3 rooms you can get your own floor in the building with really nice communal area. Good rooms, nice breeze passing through the rooms.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect and house amazing. The breakfast was however very basic - lacked items such as sausages, bacon, baked beans, pancakes etc.
Cons: The breakfast can be improved. Also consider equipping Apt. 1 with a microwave foe ease of warming food.

6.8 Good
Pros: Amani was so helpful and friendly throughout our stay. He made us feel comfortable and accompanied us to some of the local places and harbor. Francis was also friendly and helpful.
Cons: Miscommunication with the care taker John who told us that on Saturday evening during our stay we will have complementary supper only to be told that we have to pay for it when we check out. That was really awkward.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very kind and were always ready to help us when we needed it. The breakfast was delicious and provided at the time we requested. Loved my stay at Jua House!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I was on Lamu for 2 nights/1 day, and the best time I spent there was during my leisurely mornings at Jua House. The place is stunning, so well thought through, peaceful and comfortable. I wouldn’t have wanted to stay anywhere else from what I’ve seen on the island
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everythings. The staff is very professional, always avaible and very kind. In particular, Amani is a wonderful person, ready to satisfy every request and always smiling with guests. Jamala Guesthouse - Lamu - Building

9.4 Excellent (61 reviews)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were super friendly and helpful!
Cons: The mosque speakers at 5 am, but there’s nothing that can be done. Not the place’s fault.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Jamala is so far the best guest house we've stayed at in Lamu. The location is very convenient, next to the fort, and the rooms are clean and spacious. The breakfast is delicious and the staff very helpful. It is great value for money.
Cons: Only cash is accepted. Beach towels are not provided.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A very beautiful guesthouse, friendly and helpful staff, nice breakfasts with fresh fruit and juice! The location is convenient, and also they gave us a very helpful map with all the nice restaurants and things to do !
Cons: There was not much happening on the rooftop. At least, because of that we could see the shooting starts better!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The informative and helpful service. Quite large sized room.
Cons: The call to prayer is quite loud, but this is unavoidable on this small island. Next time I'd be minded to carry earplugs. ☺️
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very clean . Badji and Joseph were very friendly
Cons: Noise . My room was on the street side and I could literally hear everyone passing and their conversation
10.0 Excellent
Cons: Dont love the 4:30 call to prayer frim mosque but no way around that in Muslim town.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast and loved the tamarind juice Samuel makes! Nothing like it in the whole town! The staff is very friendly and helpful, the hotel is cozy, decorated with elegance and at a great spot in the old part of the city with wonderful views to the Fortress! I really enjoyed my stay!
Cons: The hotel is still new with some work that needs to be done at the basement! But it is really a minor thing!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff were very friendly and helpful would love to go back again sometime
Cons: Noise from the Mosque's nearby with loudspeakers in the evening and early morning was a bit of inconvenience but you get used to it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Badji from the hotel was really nice, he picked me up from where the boat stopped and gave me some good tips, the place was extremely nice and very calm when I was there - location and breakfast were also great!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was a great little place. The building itself is very beautiful and this is the perfect hotel to get some peace and quiet. The owners were lovely and the rooms were very clean, comfortable and spacious. I will be recommending this place to all of my friends who live and work in Kenya.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service and facilities. Great staff.
Cons: bloody mosquitoes
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kizingo's is a magical place to unplug from modern life and decompress. It's so quiet and on a beautiful stretch of beach.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked absolutely everything, from the welcoming hosts, the friendly staff, the joyful dogs, the delicious meals, the comfy huts to the peaceful walks along the beach and dunes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kizingo concluded a three week trip around Kenya and it was just wonderful. I won't say too much about the surroundings (which are divine) nor the accommodation and food (wonderful and delicious) but give a glowing recommendation to the hosts Caitlin and Rory who were absolutely wonderful. Extremely accommodating, service-minded, super flexible in arranging last-minute activities, and most importantly fun to hang with. I love going new places and am always looking for new adventures but this is the first place where I've felt that I definitely need to come back to!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Kizingo is simply magical. The bandas are so comfortable and luxurious - open to the environments, waking up to the sunrise and a gentle breeze is a great start to the day. Mornings spent lounging on the swing bed on the veranda listening to the waves and birds singing are perfect, with the warm sea just a sand dune away. Caitlin and Rory were wonderful hosts, providing us with everything we needed, good conversation and lots of information about the island. We went on a wonderful boat trip and snorkeled around a little island which was just like a shot out of a David Attenborough documentary - even not seeing the dolphins wasn't too sad. Every day is perfectly rounded off by watching the sunset on the beach watching the crabs chasing the waves, followed by the short walk through the sand dunes to get to dinner and conversation with the hosts and other guests - who mysteriously vanish in the day into their own private space, giving you the feeling that you are alone on a deserted island. The food is delicious - they catered wonderfully for a vegetarian and different dietary requests. Tom's cocktails are a tasty added extra - we dare you to try the Naughty Tom...
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Friendly hosts (Thank you Kate and Rory!) and all the staff. Atmosphere, beach.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The environment is fantastic for a weekend getaway. The chef iOS very good and we enjoyed all our fish meals
Cons: Thinking very Hard!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Superb, delicate food. Friendly, attentive, helpful staff. Beautiful, clean 'bandas' that create a natural, raw luxury. Deserted white sand beaches, dunes, sea kayaking and billions of stars. Overall, a splendid, secluded getaway.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location, beautiful bandas hidden between the dunes (great for privacy / relax), extremely friendly owners / manager / staff who make you feel at home. Good cocktails and food. Don’t miss the dolphins / snorkelling trip!
Cons: The bed could be more comfortable - I recommend changing the mattresses.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kizingo was perfect, we absolutely loved it.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful house with extremely helpful staff, who cooked us 3 delicious dinners. Spacious and airy rooms filled with antiques.
Cons: WiFi not very much consistent.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Beyond brilliant.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We felt like guests to Safari and the hotel staff, the food was exceptional, the welcome exceptional and wouldn't hesitate to book all over again. We loved the Swahili architecture of the rooms. They even meet you at the airport! I wouldn't hesitate in recommending! Our all time best accommodation experience.
Cons: The location wasn't perfect, but more than made up for by the experience!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about Andavelo House was fantastic, I can not recommend it enough! It is beautifully decorated, an absolute haven, in traditional Swahili style, the perfect base for a relaxing holiday on the beautiful island of Lamu! We were treated like royalty by Safari, Johnson and Abu, who were fantastic. Absolutely gorgeous place!
Cons: Nothing! It was AMAZING!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Andavelo house is in a beautifully restored stone house in lamu town. The house has a mysterious and exciting feel to it and we appreciated all of the gorgeous details. However, it was the staff that really set this apart. They were all so kind and lovely -- they went out of their way to make sure every desire was fulfilled (including to take me early to a store to buy something they had at the house that I admired). They were endlessly welcoming. We owe them such a debt of gratitude for making this an oasis to return to every day after the somewhat intense tourist-focused attention of people in the town.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was amazing and the people working there were very kind
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Location in the middle of Lamu town was very convenient for museums and restaurants, and only a 5 minute walk from the waterfront. The staff were very friendly and helpful, plus the included shuttle boat from the airport saved the hassle of negotiating a boat for ourselves. Rooms were very spacious and the rooftop terraces were a great place to relax with a sundowner after the day's exploring.
Cons: Payment was in cash only which meant a trip to the ATM down the road when checking out. Also the would-be tranquility of the beautiful lounge/pool area was spoiled by the deafening noise of the water booster pump that kicked in every few minutes. Though the rooftops proved to be better spots to relax anyway.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Exceptional place, first in terms of aesthetics, design, decoration, integration into an old house. Then in terms of personnel, always available, polite and serving. Excellent chef who can prepare for you local dishes, you just have to order in the morning. Must also be mentioned the amazing Captain Kelly recommended by the house for whole day boat excursion.
Cons: -
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Congrats to the people who built this gem! The rooms are stunning, the service excellent! They cooked a most delicious dinner for us. Staying in Andavelo house was an amazing experience! We highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for something special!
Cons: Can’ t find anything!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great. Many thanks for your hospitality.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I stayed four nights in Jambo House with my friend Bego and I think it was for sure one of the best hostels in which I’ve slept in. Arnold (the owner) is a very nice and kind person, he made us feel like home at the very first moment, telling us all about Lamu and giving us plenty of recommendations about where to eat. He also offered us some plans like sunset excursion or different boat trips which were all fantastic. Our room was quite big and equiped with all necessary: two beds, ceiling fan, mirror, mosquito net, safety box...it was quiet and comfortable, we slept so well there. The hostel has a very nice terrace with a rooftop in which we used to look at the stars every night. The breakfast (which was great, with fresh juice and different options to choose) was served every morning there too. I will come back to Jambo House for sure. I would recommend it to anyone who apreciates a lovely staying with warm local people and simple life. ¡Thank you Arnold!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: This hostel is well located and the staff is very friendly. Harold, the owner, is always available for his guests and it is really a pleasure to spend time there
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Arnold is incredible and very helpful when it comes to suggesting activities and restaurants around the island. Also makes a really good omelette :)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very nice place to stay in Lamu! Arnold has many tips and always helps finding the right people for boattrips, sunset tours or anything else. It‘s lovely there: a small house in Lamu town with a rooftop terrace. There they serve the best breakfast i had on my Kenia travels, very tasty! When I come back to Lamu i would stay there again.
Cons: It‘s very warm in the sleeping room. There is no aircon, but it‘s ok for a while.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This is a great place with a great owner and staff. I recommend it to all
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Arnold was a great host. He provided us a lot of information about Lamu and its surroundings, where to eat and what to do. It was really useful and the trips which ordered via JamboHouse were just great. You must try the sunset walk - the guide was fantastic! There is a nice view from the rooftop terrace and the breakfast is good.
Cons: The rooms and the furniture are a bit "tired" and facilities need improvement. No wifi in the rooms (in the terrace is was ok).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I had great time in Lamu by the great help of Arnold who is the owner of JamboHouse. He is an excellent host.He gave me all necessary information about Lamu and he arranged excellent tours for me. I enjoyed all the tours that he arranged. Tour guides were so nice and knowledgeable too. Facilities of the hotel is quite convenient. The breakfast at the terrace was so delicious. Hotel was so clean. I wish i could stay longer.
Cons: I like everything :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My stay at JamboHouse was perfect. Location is very convenient (free pick-up from the airport), staff very friendly, clean rooms, excellent breakfast and a nice rooftop where you can see the sunrise. Highly recommend!
Cons: /
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Arnold was extremely helpful with information about Lamu. He arranged a wonderful day trip on dhow to see the Takwa ruins and lunch at Manada Beach. Captain Kelly was fantastic and cooked us an amazing lunch on the boat. The breakfasts were great and the staff were lovely.
Cons: Our bed was a bit small for 2 people.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The wonderful hospitality of all staff especially the host. The clean, functional rooms, the roof terrace with lovely views over town, the tour guides that the host works with were all amazing!
Cons: The bed was slightly smaller than a double.

6.8 Good
Pros: The decor; the cleanliness ; the location The size of rooms
Cons: The food selection was limited; the room service was not great! The waiters were forgetful of what you ordered even when there were very few guests There was no coffee/ tea in rooms
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was excellent and we would not mind coming back for more memories in the very near future. Food was exceptional and the ambience ideal for the honeymooners. Thank you for the first chapter of our married life.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location of our room, the architecture of the buildings
Cons: They put focus on payments for everything rather than customer experiences and this can leave a bad taste in a customer’s mouth.
7.5 Good
Pros: Beautiful location and good facilities..
Cons: Need to improve in handling tours and making people feel safe, esp for females traveling solo.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Serene. Beautiful. Calming. Tropical.
Cons: The flies.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved the personalised touch that you get from the staff at Majlis. It's the best place to spend quality time away from the busy schedules of life. Its heaven on earth.
5.5 Okay
Cons: Our money was stolen from our rooms and the manager said we were hiding the money cause we did not want to pay. Absolutely disgusted by the treatment we received at an allegedly 5 star hotel. The manager is a horrible bigot who has no respect for women and treated us as thieves and brought his employees in front of us for US to identify the thief among his employees and refused to even apologise. Exceptionally disappointed, not even at the stolen money but at the horrible treatment from the rude manager. Appalled at the kind of service for the amount of money we paid to stay at the Majlis
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Even too big room! Excellent place is many respect
Cons: Only thing to complain that vine by glass is quality is poor, both white and red
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The food was good and the service was excellent. The location is great and it is peaceful and stress free.
Cons: The air conditioning did not work well.
Fatumas Tower - Lamu - Building
7
9.1 Excellent (48 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Lamu, Fatuma's Tower Guest House is near the beach, within a 5-minute walk of Shela Beach and Manda Beach. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, a library, and a safe deposit box at the front desk. A roundtrip airport shuttle is complimentary (available 24 hours).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Awesome place suited our needs
7.5 Good
Pros: The problem was the mosquitoes. I wish it had been suggested that we stay in rooms at the highest levels to minimize this problem and to maybe catch more breeze. We were fine until we ran out of 2 full cans of insect repellent. Otherwise the staff and food and attention to our needs was excellent.
Cons: Mosquitoes, occasional lack of hot water in the showers, and troubles flushing the toilets.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fatuma´s Tower is a lovely retreat, quiet and charming place to stay. The staff is absolutely welcoming and helpful. On their advice, we had an unforgettable boat journey. A special thanks to Alfred!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing, friendly and extremely helpful staff. Beautiful historic buildings and incredible food.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Nice and quiet garden where breakfast was served Lots of nice old trees.
Cons: Location quite far from the beach. No privacy in the bathroom due to very poor layout of the room Staff did not enquire about arrival and subsequently there was confusion over room Breakfast is quite poor and adds no real value Miasing the views
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The layout of the room and the view was excellent. The room was also very clean and comfortable. The rooftop terrace was amazing - loved the swing bed
Cons: The food and waiter service was terrible. The breakfast was basic and the lunch order that we had made (fishcakes and and advocado salad) was poor. The fishcakes were tasteless and the advo salad was full of tomato with hardly any advo. It also took an hour to arrive. Additionally, since Fatumas serves as a yoga venue, I expected a more yogic / healthy menu, including a nice range of salads, smoothies etc. This is something that Fatumas should consider in the future.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff makes you feel at home. They are warm and not too intrusive.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful house + got a free upgrade on the room + free airport pickup + arranged sailing cruise for me
Cons: Breakfast was nice but repetitive if one stays for several days
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were brilliant and very accommodating. Even though it was off season and raining we had a brilliant time.
Cons: The food often took 2-3 hours from being ordered and wasn't always good enough for what was charged.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Service was incredible. The staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming, especially Alfred, who is an absolute star! Breakfast was quite filling, the lunch/dinner menu was a bit limited but all food was tasty, incredibly fresh and well-prepared. The entire property has such character and is a lovely place to stay. Our room had an A/C (I think it was the only one, from my research), which was nice when we wanted to close the windows and cool off a bit.
Cons: Part of this is the reality of the location - quite a few mosquitoes and got really bit up, even with the mosquito net over the bed and mosquito coils. Perhaps more regular and extensive spraying within the rooms would help. The tour guide we were recommended was friendly but not very informative, and likely overcharged us to walk around Lamu town (but the fishing trip that the staff arranged was awesome)

8.8 Excellent
Pros: It's not for everyone but the ones who get it there is nowhere else
9.5 Excellent
Pros: This is the second time in Banana House, so clearly would recommend it! The staff is delightful, food delicious and it is very relaxing. Room service is just great, with staff being very attentive to the detail! The house is also very well equipped, providing amazing hand-made shampoo and soaps, Kikoys for the beach and all you need. It's a very nice 5-10mins walk either by the sea or inside the village to the beach. Banana house also provides free transportation from the airport to the hotel.
Cons: The internet was unstable in the penthouse. Credit card payments are charged 5%. My brother and his partner had a room that faced a chicken coop and were woken up very early by a roster every morning, however this wasn't the case for the penthouses.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The layout of the hotel is very pleasant with each floor having its own dining facilities and lounge areas keeping it discrete. The fridges on each floor is also well appreciated, with an honor system in place, as guests log what they take. The shuttle to and from the airport was well organized by the resort. For Yoga lovers, this is the place to visit. Nimu the hostess is a total gem, a source of so much information and always willing to assist.
Cons: There was construction going on in two locations near the hotel, this went on through Sunday. Being such a peaceful island, this ambient noise was rather disturbing. Also inspite of the mosquito nets, the mosquitoes still go in, probably nets that are dipped in repellant would work better.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service, beautiful property, amazing staff and cooks!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was friendly and attentive. Loved their shared space and honesty fridge.
Cons: Can't think of anything
8.8 Excellent

Pros: Staff was really friendly and helpful. They were really caring, as well! The atmosphere was super peaceful and Kelly's yoga was great :)
Cons: We actually had a bit of a confussion due to the price initially offered by booking.com which was rather disappointing. However, Dorcas was able to solve it the day before our departure. Thanks to which we left on a positive note
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff members, great facilities and very tasty food. Highly recommend.

Cons: No areas that we did not enjoy!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The beautiful house with the many areas to relax. The breakfast was very good with homemade bread, passion jam and omelettes. Dinner was beautiful presented in the courtyard and superbly prepared by Michael. The staff, Jelani, John and Kennedy were very kind and caring and with Paul made Subira House the perfect place to rest, restore and relax.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! The House, the garden and my room were all beautifully kept and very tasteful minimalist but luxurious style. It felt like a peaceful haven in the middle of Lamu old town. The staff were very kind, friendly, professional and accommodating. They allowed me to extend my stay, offerd help and advice for potential day trips and restaurants. The food at Subira House was the best meal I had on Lamu, (which is saying alot since I had some very good fresh food every day from lots of different restaurants on Lamu). I highly recommend booking a dinner at Lamu House. I wish I could stay longer! Thank you everyone at Subira House!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The location and property were really close to the water. The property itself is beautiful and very well taken care of. I had my own balcony and private space which was perfect and really nice. The breakfast was delicious and the staff were so nice.
Cons: I think having more of an upfront menu of options and activities with prices would be helpful. Let the customers decide on their own time what to do. I enjoyed the staff recommendations, but having a sense of what I was paying upfront and things to discern over would be helpful.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great atmosphere, great breakfast, truly eco-friendly!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is the most amazing little place. I had the best stay ever. Magical.
Cons: That I couldn't just stay !

Pros: Breakfast was fresh and delicious, one of the best cups of coffee in Kenya! Kennedy & Captain were very charming, super helpful, and made our stay seamless. The house is absolutely gorgeous, the spaces are curated with excellent taste. Loved reading in the upstairs nook while it rained. All in all an incredible space and I will definitely be back
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is good. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.
Cons: WiFi In some of the rooms only ‘Free pick up’ is only for 5+ nights For those travelling to Lamu to sightsee I would highly recommend you to either stay in Shella or Manda island as you’ll spend most of your time over there (more activities).

6.3 Good
Pros: the ambience and the friendly staff
Cons: The lack of tv does make the stay a bit unbearable if you plan to stay more than a night
9.5 Excellent
Pros: A variation at breakfast would be good, but I cannot praise the staff enough. Especially, Evans and others. The fold down and mosquito net service. I especially liked the incense lighting in the bedroom and bathroom areas each night
Cons: The lighting in the bathroom could have been slightly brighter especially for those wishing to shave or apply makeup
5.0 Okay
Pros: Great location Great room clean up / bedsheets change everyday Restaurant is well decorated
Cons: . Garden and pool side is not clean as the pictures. Pool beds are dirty. Not acceptable . There is not ONE place you can sit and relax in the hotel ... not even a sofa or a nice area.. I never see this in my all life traveler . The room is ok but small balcony on room no 6 and not conform as the big balcony they are showing . I was alone in the hotel ! Alone ! They could propose me a better room maybe . Staff is not dedicate to customer at the front desk: look like an office : each time you walk in to ask Something, nobody say hi and they stay sit on the computer ... very embarrassing . Staff restaurant is better . Lunch and diner prices are crazy .. almost As expensive as Peponi !!! And poor choice . Don t be rushing for the breakfast. You have to wait 20 mn minimum for your juice, coffee and cereals bowl ( poor quantity) 40 mn after you will have omelette . The last day , they inform me at 9h55 during my breakfast that the new customers for my room were at the hotel already .. and check out was 10 .. I had 5 mn to pack everything ... They could inform me nicely the day before . I had an amazing stay everywhere in Kenya especially in Watamu .. I was so disappointed with that stay !!! Hotel is half of your Stay appreciation so I did not really enjoy Lamu I do not recommand Kinjani
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Lovely quite small hotel
Cons: possibly a better lunch and evening menu
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were super friendly and helpful, and arranged coffee for us when we went out on a boat during the day. The feel of the place is very nice and it's well priced.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The food was excellent and the quantity was good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Ibrahim served us with others and whilst he was quiet his service was excellent. The meet and greet at the airport and the transfer by boat was efficient. It is als an eco friendly hotel
Cons: I did not expect to take off our shoes and step into the sea when we first arrived straight from the airport. It rained heavily on the first day of our stay hence there was no hot water to use the next morning as they were relying totally on solar power to power the water heaters and as such had to shower in very cool water. Shela is a beautiful location with narrow streets and old restored townhouses.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The place is laid back, quiet, beautiful and comfortable, and the manager was very helpful and a person who we liked very much. Our room was looked after by a competent and very friendly housekeeper. The food was quite good if the restaurant service was slow and frustrating.
Cons: Our main complaint was about the service in the restaurant. Although courteous and likable, our waiters were slow, did not understand their menu well and did not respond to simple requests like, "Please bring the coffee right away". The service in the restaurant was so frustrating that we found a better place (Peponi Hotel) for supper on our second night. Delivery and departure from the hotel was by boat, and that was fair enough, but it invariably involved getting soaked because there is no pier or jetty at the hotel and it seems to be too much of a request to use the jetty down the beach. This is OK, once one accepts it and gets into the spirit.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The location is one of the best and staff were very nice and very helpful
Cons: Nothing at all
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Accommodating and welcoming staff. Very tasteful decor. Sitting on the balconies looking at the ocean!

8.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was really beautiful with terraces everywhere, the rooftop gives a great view on all the city of Lamu! Carole was really nice and helpful, but you have to look a bit around to find her ;) Great situation at 3 minutes walking from the center.
Cons: No air conditionning in the room and a lot of mosquitos because there are no mosquito nets on the windows, only around the bed. The guide who took us from the airport, "Chef", was nice but a bit persistent. Take your time if you want to do an excursion for the day and don't hesitate to say it if you want half a day or if you want to change the day etc. We weren't disappointed by the one we did (Takwa Ruins) !
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The amazing building and furniture The swimming pool . The food and the amazing fresh fruit breakfast . The friendly staff particularly the lovely Carol .
Cons: There were holes in the mosquito net
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Lots of little terraces to hide away, drink a beer & read a book. Carol the manager is fantastic and could not be more helpful
Cons: The beds are antique and whilst comfortable nd pretty are not very long or stable.
2.0 Mediocre
Pros: One of the staff members is quite nice and willing to boil water as there is NO HOT WATER. The other staff member when asked for hot water said there were no matches. Completely ridiculous response, seems to think lying to me about no matches would be credible.
Cons: The description does not mention no HOT WATER, very expensive for the quality. The place is filthy and rundown. The pictures are a lie, it no longer looks like that. No maintenance has been done for years. One staff person is surly - refused to boil water by claiming no matches, refused to come where I ate dinner to walk me back but lied to the person who called and said he was coming. There is nothing to recommend this establishment.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The pool, the house and its terrace. Last but not least Carol and all her staff at the house are very kind and professionals
Cons: The guy who is picking guests at the pier is too pushing and wants to offer services such as walking tours and dhowl tours in quite a rude way. Also the shower water is rather cold
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Carol is fantastic and makes sure you have everything you need during your stay. The rooms are simple and adequate for short stays. Showers are cold and beds really aren't that comfortable but the staff makes up for it!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Staff and the atmosphere is great! Carol was so nice. Pool was good, and breakfast also.
Cons: Someone next door was burning garbage one day and the smoke came right into the hotel :(
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We got very ill on our stay at Lamu. Thankfully Carol at Jannat house took care of us amazingly. I’m so thankful to her!
8.3 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about Lajoya was just wonderful. Esther is a really warm host, she helped me arrange all the activities I wanted to do and made sure that I didn't get ripped off price wise. She also took me to watch the England world cup match at a local bar :) James's cooking is incredible. Every day he would call the fisherman and see what they had caught and then we'd chat about what he thought of cooking with this. Mgazetti kept everything super clean and helped me get around when I could otherwise have been a bit lost. Lovely people make for a lovely place. I can't recommend Lajoya enough!!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Definitely stay in Shela (not Lamu town). At La Joya, Chef and housekeeper are very helpful. Chef cooks great meals of your choice at cost price - excellent value. Rooms are comfortable with big mosquito net. House is traditional Shela style.
Cons: A bit hidden away in the maze that is Shela - maybe a map would help.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent chef and very friendly service. Rooftop room is paradise with spectacular view...recommendable for full moon
Cons: Not completely cleanly freshly prepared on check in...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful house, great rooms and common spaces.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very chill.
7.5 Good
Pros: Really nice hippy / boho place, lovely place if you want to relax and do nothing. Pizza and movie night was super fun (and well organised). We stayed in treehouse, which was really beautiful.
Cons: Food (apart from pizza) was overpriced (given the quality), you need to take a boat to get anywhere.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent food, attentive vegan and vegetarian chef
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Rachel is an awesome host. Definitely going back
Cons: Nothing
5.5 Okay
Pros: The place is not bad if you are looking for a rest place.
Cons: The restaurant and bar is overpriced. In our case they send a boat to pick up us for 10€ and they didn't tell us which we had to pay that amount. You better take another boat to go there, There are hundreds of them. No hot water, there is no energie from 21:00 until 9:00. There is no key for the room.
7.5 Good
Pros: This place is a haven for people who like to contribute to conserving the environment.. The rooms are different and use nature to cool you off... The pizzas are amazing as well and the owner is friendly
Cons: The breakfast options were limited to the same things everyday. More imagination should go into the breakfast menu
4.5 Okay
Pros: Fantastic beach location. Delicious pizza's and food quality very good, but pricey compared to Shella restaurants. Glorious sunsets.
Cons: Very uncomfortable bed. Old linen and towels. Tons of mosquitos. Rats eating our soap at night. Zero rest with 2 sleepless nights due to outside groups partying in the restaurant area right outside our bungalow and zero sound-proofing (makuti type building). Place offers zero privacy and rest. Go there if you want to make noise and party, otherwise avoid it. We cut our 5 night stay to 2 and left. Ultimately, very expensive for what you get.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s perfect, a paradise and SUSTAINABLE
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The ambiance was refreshing and relaxing. The staff were friendly and Rachel and her mom were extremely welcoming. It a place worth visiting again
Cons: There can be some improvement on the breakfast menu..

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Nyama (the housekeeper) is amazing and super helpful. Also, I know this sounds a little silly, but this place had THE BEST bed mosquito net I've ever seen. Worked like a charm and didn't have holes in it like so many do in Africa. I highly recommend this place for the value and location!
Cons: It's by no means a "new" or "fancy place" that's extremely clean and well-equipped, but that's fine in Lamu.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Tbe staff were very helpful. Mnyana, Safari, Baraka to mention some
Cons: The place had too many mosquitoes, no water in tbe shower, creaky furniture
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Location is ideal, look no further. Shela is tiny but this place is so conveniently located by the water that makes it so straightforward to find. Nyumba the caretaker is amazing and so hospitable, he looked after me so well. The patio upstairs is beautiful with Lamu beds and views. My room had an ensuite, it was clean, no hot water but I don't mind that. WiFi was excellent, let me tell you that's not a given even if the property promises it is. Breakfast was good, served upstairs. The atmosphere is welcoming, homely and overall very safe. I was a solo female traveller and would highly recommend it to others.
Cons: I can't say I disliked anything in particular. At a push, I didn't have the best nights sleep possibly due to the bedding being hard and pillows uncomfortable but they are no worse than any budget place in kenya.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff nyama is a super guy
Cons: Bed
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: The location was great
Cons: The Staff morale was very low and often not cooperative. The swimming pool was not clean. There were lots of mosquitoes and often we had to buy our own mosquito repellents before refunding us on the last day. Beds were noise and uncomfortable. In short I would not recommend anybody who want to relax with family to go there.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The place was clean and the staff were very supportive. They even sent someone to pick us from Manda Airport to the Hotel at Shela by a boat, just awesome
Cons: Lack of a backup generator and the morning meal always had eggs with no alternative
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very well located and great value. Robert, the housekeeper and cook, was great!!!
3.3 Mediocre
Cons: This place is a tourist trap, nice pictures without reality. Dirty, worn down, bed bugs. So bad. And suddenly there was no hot water for showering. No information about thats needed to ask. The compensation for that was nothing, the owner even delayed the talk about until last minute. I shortened my stay with one day, to booking he stated 4-5 day less, so even scammed booking.com
5.8 Okay
Pros: The location is cool and nice
Cons: The location is abit far from the lamu main
6.3 Good
Pros: Staff was very nice, the rooftop terrasse was good for relaxing and reading, and the breakfast was also good.
Cons: Place is very worn down, in my bathroom there was mould on the wall and the water tap didnt work. The sheets and towels were kind of damp when I got them and smelled weird. Also the mosque is right next door and is very loud, but I think thats almost inevitable in Lamu

5.0 Okay
Pros: Good location, lovely views, nice rooftop relaxing area.
Cons: Linen very old, frayed, torn and dirty with pillows smelling of old sweat. Lot of window and door latches broken. Towels were damp and very old. No replacement of shower soap. Bread served at breakfast had mold on it. Entrance very disorganised and dirty. Confirmed a booking for 3 nights, only to be told that first night not available and we were put up in sister hotel (Janaathan) which was even dirtier, older and more run-down.
