We really enjoyed the old world charm of Lorelei - and the breakfasts were particularly yummy - Bruce was the perfect host both friendly and helpful
Welcoming host, complimentary wine (delicious McLaren Vale) and nuts in the evening, and elegant 19th century house retaining its distinctive wood panelling and stained glass all made for a comfortable stay. A style of its own so much nicer than standardised contemporary decor.
the vintage feel of the place
nothing , everything was great
Beautiful Edwardian period home converted into several beautifully appointed bedroom suites but still retaining the charm of a bygone era and the reception rooms.
I stayed here for one night at the start of my Great Ocean Road drive having seen it recommended on a couple of websites. Once I got into the guest house it was very charming. The house is quite old with lots of high ceilings and dark wood panelling and doors. There are about 6 guest rooms, mine was self-contained and again very charming. The bed had an electric blanket, very welcome in winter. Heating was via the Air-Con unit and it took a while to warm up but was fine once it had warmed through. The bathroom is heated via very effective ceiling lamps. The bathroom had a lovely looking bath, which I did not use and a large shower, it was very clean and shampoo, conditioner, soap etc are all provided. For such an old property I was expecting that the plumbing might be a bit dubious, however the water in the shower was piping hot and a good strong spray. Another nice touch in the room is that there is Foxtel on the TV. One of my main gripes about Australia is that there free to view TV is dire. So being able to watch Foxtel was great, as I am travelling alone and usually in my room by 8.30 at the latest. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the room was well furnished with a desk and three lamps as well as overhead lighting, and plenty of storage space. There is an iron and ironing board, kettle, fridge and hair dryer. Another nice touch is that there is a guest lounge where you can have a night cap of free port, sherry or red wine. There is also tea and coffee always available in the dining room. A continental breakfast is included in the cost of the night’s stay. You help yourself to choices of cereal, white or wholemeal toast with various jams, fresh fruit, fruit juice, yoghurt and tea / coffee or chocolate. All in all this is lovely, quirky, characterful place to spend time if you are staying in Portland.
The beginning of my stay was not auspicious as I arrived after 2 pm as per the information I had received but there was no one around. Luckily I had the phone number to hand, and called it and was told by the man on the phone he would be there in about 10 minutes, which he was.
