The owner and his wife were very responsive to my emails. He picked us up from the train station (Sounzan) at 7pm, most likely when they were in the middle of preparing dinner for their other hotel guests. They graciously prepared dinner for my family of four even though I forgot to pre-order. The place was spotlessly clean, quiet, and the owners were attentive to our needs. The onsen was open all night, so when I had trouble sleeping, I just went to the onsen and took a hot bath. (Usually hotels close their onsens at 10 or 11pm and don't re-open until the late afternoon). The decor is outdated but it was fine. Dinner and breakfast were delicious.
This place was the perfect setting for a break after busy Tokyo. Surrounded by nature, it's a bit out of the way, but the hotel provides free pick-up/drop-off and it's close to the rope-way which means, heading up the mountain, you can skip the crowds at Gora. The room was spacious and had everything we needed to feel comfortable. Dinner and traditional breakfast at the restaurant was tasty, beautifully presented and served by caring staff. The highlight was off-course the downstairs onsen with hot sulphuric water to soak in after a day exploring. It's only small (one bath is larger than the other and they are alternated between male and female, so I got to experience both). I had the bath all to myself on both occasions which felt luxurious. The hotel felt a tad dated, but that only added to its charm. We also liked the fact that wifi did not extend into the rooms (good wifi in the common room by the lobby). This helped us to really relax and unplug. Management was great.
A little more info on what to do in the area and how to get around would have been nice. Instructions on how to get there, send after confirming the booking, would also have been helpful. Other than that, everything was perfect.
Amazing staff -- very friendly, kind, and helpful. Lovely ryokan breakfasts & dinner, highly recommend getting the meals if you stay here. The onsens were wonderful, very relaxing way to end each day after exploring Hakone.
The location was a bit of a walk (15 min) from the nearest Hakone cable car / ropeway station, but the very friendly staff was always willing to give us a ride when needed!
I went to Hakone so several times but this time is the best place. Everything is perfect. The host provide you free commutation between ryokan and station. Definitely will come back!
Quiet but still close to everything we wanted to see and do.
