Ishiba Ryokan - Hirosaki - Building
1
8.9 Excellent (383 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Ishiba Ryokan in Hirosaki, you'll be within a 15-minute walk of Hirosaki Castle and United Church of Christ in Japan Hirosaki Church. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very big room. Superior service
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The owner was super friendly and knowledgeable about the town and in general; guests would not need any tourist information centre. The ryokan itself gives an impression of an authentic Japanese inn, with vintage look and feel, and just enough modern commodities. The location is perfect, 5 min walking from the castle
Cons: There are two shared bathrooms, one of which has only one shower. So a person using it normally locks the door, and it may take time to wait for your turn. The second room has three showers, so if you don’t mind company, there’s no need to wait. Fair enough, men and women switch the bathrooms daily (not exactly sure, we stayed only two nights)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. This place is fantastic. Location is next to Hirosaki Park/Castle, good food close by etc...the service, the caring details by the owner, the story from its history. This is such a especial experience and place...I cannot recommend it enough. Thank you SO MUCH for having us. Would come back to Japan just to visit this place again.
Cons: Nothing. Literally our 1 nigt stay felt way too short.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: First of all, the hotel was perfect: great location and breakfast, big and beautiful room and an Onsen. But what make the experience really amazing was the hospitality of Ishiba san himself (the owner). We took me to ride around town to show me the best local places, help me a lot with my trip to the mountains (drew me a map with suggested routes!) and even offered me to join for a night out with him and his friends. Thank you so much!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel owner has a very good English. It is a good experience to chat with him.
Cons: the space of toilet in 2nd floor is small. Tall people are advised to go to 1st floor
9.5 Excellent
Pros: -The ryokan has a very long history and rich historical background. This makes it so impressive for me. Yet, the place and rooms are very clean and tidy. I give a big thanks to the ryokan owner who provides such elegant and historical place for my stay. This really facilitated my photography trip so that I can wake up so early to go to the castle. -The owner is very friendly, helpful and professional. Thanks for giving us a drive to the station! His English is very fluent so no problem with communication. -The onsen is very relaxing. It is very enjoyable to get into onsen after a long walk in the castle.
Cons: Can’t think of anything.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The service was incredible. Staff were very friendly and accommodating - it would be an understatement to say that they went above and beyond for us. The building had great character and history which really enhanced the experience of staying in Hirosaki. It was my first time staying at a Ryokan, and I had a very pleasant experience - it's definitely something I would do again. I thoroughly recommend this place for anyone staying in Hirosaki.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: One of the best place we've ever stayed. Beautiful ryokan with deep history, great hospitality and warm heart. Will never forget this place and the hosts.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The head of the ryokan was really nice. He was very helpful in giving information about the area and he supplied a space for everyobe to watch the festival. He also gave me a ride to the station after I checked out. The place was clean and I had a big room.
Cons: The bathroom was a little outdated. Because it is an older place the walls are a little thin.
Iroha Ryokan - Aomori - Building
2
8.8 Excellent (550 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Iroha Ryokan is located in Aomori and takes about minute walk from Aomori Station, near Utou Shrine and Asamushi Onsen. It takes about 20 minute from the hotel to Aomori Airport by car. Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel. Yukata are available for guests to wear during their stay. Guests may borrow irons and kettles at no additional charge (please inquire at the front desk for details). The hotel possesses 8 guest rooms.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Cheap and comfortable. Small but tidy Japanese style room is enough for a sleep. Very very near, 1 minute walking from the Aomori JR Station.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Our hosts were friendly and warm, she made the best homemade Japanese breakfast!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The staff are very friendly, helpful, and nice. Always in a pleasant mood. The beds were super comfortable. The provided yukata was adorable. The location is amazing and handy to everything. And the value for money is amazing. I’d definitely recommend staying here to any traveller.
Cons: Only one thing I didn’t like was the toilet paper. It was a bit flimsy and rough, hurt a little. Besides that I have no complaints.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely host, easy check in, super close to the station and some decent restaurants. The Ryokan was basic, but more than suitable and comfortable for the one night I was there.
Cons: The communal sink/bathroom area was a little close to the bedrooms so got a little loud when people were moving about there... But that's a very small issue!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner is very warm and she kept everything clean and tidy. The bath is clean and comfortable and shower water is hot and strong. Breakfast is very good and free coffee and chocolate are offered for each day of stay.
Cons: There was some strange smell in the room every time we come back. It smelled like wood, probably it was because it is an old house. But after opening the window for 5 mins the smell was gone so it did not bother us too much.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was very nice and welcoming, and the breakfasts she provided were traditional Japanese breakfasts of high quality. My room was also very nice and clean, with tatami mats and free tea/coffee/apple juice was provided each day, as well as some chocolates. And it was really close to the station too. All this at a very reasonable price. I will definitely stay there again if I go back to Aomori.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner is a super nice lady who cleaned our room everyday so neat and tidy that I felt as if we were staying in a new room. Bath water is hot and the breakfast (500 yen) was wonderfulx
Cons: Nothing. Sometimes wifi was a bit slow but it did not bother me too much as I was using my data.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Location is superb. Next door to the train station and bus stops.
Cons: The pillow! One of those Japanese bean bag pillows. I guess it's traditional but still kind of uncomfortable.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Verry goed Ryokan ! Japan feeling! Perfect Breakfast in Room! Verry yummi!
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved our stay at Iroha Ryokan. Our room was spacious and the futons very comfortable. The bathing facilities were excellent. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The homemade breakfast was the best we’ve had in Japan - delicious and very good value. The ryokan is spitting distance from Aomori station. Would happily stay again and recommend to a friend.
Cons: Nothing!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The dinner was superb and the breakfast too!! Never expected to find such good chef and food in a resort in the midst of the mountains. Definitely worth the price paid for!!
Cons: Everything was great!!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: This is a great hotel. We went in winter, for the Hakkoda Powder, which is amazing, the hotel provides a shuttle service to and from the Ropeway, which is great. There is not a lot to do here, Ski/Board, onsen and sleep. Perfect for us. They have English, Mandarin, and Japanese speakers, and work extremely hard to keep you happy. Things they dont tell you on web sites :- The mountain Road closes at 9:00pm and opens at 7:00 am, the best way to the hotel from Airport is Taxi 8300 JPY (40 min in weather). Hakkoda-San is amazing.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Wonderfully located in the Hakkoda mountains with easy drives to Lake Towada, the Oirase River and the Hakkoda Mountain cable car. The staff were excellent and helpful. We were given a free upgrade to our room and it was enormous, but all the rooms are much larger than normal hotel rooms in Japan. The onsen is great as well.
Cons: Due to the location, you are tied to the hotel's restaurants, unless you bring your own cold food. While the food in either of the Japanese or French restaurants is excellent in quality and presentation, it is very expensive. There are no alternative options within easy access.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Free car rides to an attraction outside the hotel. Very personable staff
Cons: Charge us onsen fee when we didn't use it.
7.5 Good
Pros: Close to nature.
Cons: Cannot yukata and slipper. Restaurant choices are few and expensive. Lack outdoor onsen.
Fujiya Hotel - Hirakawa - Building

Overview Reviews
With a stay at Fujiya Hotel in Owani, you'll be steps from Owani Onsen and a 2-minute drive from Chausuyama Park. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk and an elevator (lift). Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good hotel with staff named “Kiyoshi” he drove us ( 2 adults +2 kids) to yakiniku restaurant and pick up us for free ... love this hotel . Onsen and breakfast are supreme !!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was an amazing ryoukan. The baths, both inside and outside, was outstanding. They were super clean with wonderful views and ambience. The food was spectacular. As seems to be the norm, there were many small dishes. The proteins were mainly fish and seafood, but there was also a wonderful pork dish. We had nice view of the city, but on the other side was a view of the river and the mountains.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The onsen had an indoors with a jacuzzi, an outdoors and a dry sauna.
Cons: Breakfast was traditional Japanese (Washoku) and very limited western options.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Great staffs and big room
Cons: City view
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Amazing onsen Very clean and confortable room
Cons: You have to book dinner in advance but it wasn’t clear on reservation. We couldn’t book it even the day before. Average western breakfast as most places in japan
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The Onsen was great. The people at the hotel were very helpful. We found a Yakiniku restaurant down the road about 3 blocks that was excellent. We also put a second futon bottom under the futon that was laid out for us which helped us sleep much better. A very beautiful property! The surroundings are about as authentic Japanese as you can get!
Cons: I did not think the breakfast that very good. Very Japanese, and the presentation was exceptional. Just didn't think the food lived up to the rest of the property. The bakery items tasted old, and I saw lots of breakfast food left over by other travelers as well.
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Dormy Inn Hirosaki Natural Hot Spring in Hirosaki, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Hirosaki Castle and Hirosaki Shoten Church. Featured amenities include a computer station, dry cleaning/laundry services, and luggage storage. Self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were very happy with our stay at Dormy Inn Hirosaki. We LOVED the onsen, free noodles at night, & overall accommodations. The staff was also very friendly. Its conveniently located and has a Family Mart right across the street, making it super easy to grab a cheap snack or meal. We will definitely be back!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Free shuttle to/from JR station, Onsen, Room Size
Cons: Nothing
6.8 Good
Pros: free evening ramen tastes really good. I want more
Cons: no shuttle service available when I came. not enough information especially English to tell how to travel to the hotel after the train arrives
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - excellent breakfast, - frendly staff - pleasant onsens on the roof of the hotel - incredible
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good breakfast and free shuttle pickup to and from JR station.
Cons: Suggest hotel send a message or email to travellers where to wait the shuttle bus at JR station. I was lucky the tourist info staff told me the exact waiting point and time. Otherwise I would have to spend money to take taxi to hotel on arrival.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: 1. Free pick-up and drop-off service. You get to be picked up by a taxi (wait next to the apple post box outside of JR Hirosaki station, if the driver is not there, wait a bit more, he'll eventually appear) from the station from afternoon to late night and you can be dropped off at the station in the morning. I used the service three times and I was the only passenger, such a luxury. Please note that the pick-up service from JR station to the hotel is supported by a local taxi company, so you'll be picked up by a car, not a shuttle bus. 2. Breakfast was good, but for me one meal was just perfect. There are many old cafes and bakeries in the city for you to explore if that's your cup of tea. Hirosaki is famous for its apples, and is has many gorgeous apple pies to offer. 3. The late night free ramen service is great. 4. The bath is what makes dormy inn stands out! Very nicely decorated, although I don't think the women's bath has an equally good view of Iwaki san (at least I didn't really see it). Most of the time I was there all by myself, feels like a private bath. 5. The free laundry service, which can be perfectly combined with another hot bath session. 6. Free bike rental for the first two hours, although I didn't have a chance to use this service. Alternatively the city offers bike rental for 500yen/day (not sure how many hours), and it's definitely the best way to explore the city on a sunny day. 7. Free umbrella rental (very useful when there is pouring rain). 8. Location location location. Two convenience stores nearby, close to the park and many major sites, restaurant area, old cafes, and a 100yen bus bus stop. 9. Staff was friendly and helpful. I got a room as requested. 10. The elevator is smartly designed. The room as well, taking off the bathtub but keeping the shower gives guests good flexibility. The room is bigger than other hotel rooms of the same price range.
Cons: 1. When I arrived there were 4-5 small spiders on the ceiling, occupying different corners, and some mosquitoes. I'm not sure if it's because it was raining outside (because I didn't see most of them the following days), but it didn't give me a good first impression and I think the room could've been cleaner. 2. Wifi in the room was very weak and unstable. I had to give up uploading photos and wait until I checked into another hotel (where the wifi was fast and it was such a big contrast.)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Everything mentioned above
Cons: The bed and pillows were HARD.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good value hotel. The Ofuro (public bath) is very nice and big. The room is clean and modern. Central location and the staff are also very nice.
Cons: You have to pay for a car parking lot.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This hotel has a wonderful public bath on the top floor with laundry facilities, so you can wash your clothes and yourself at the same time. I like that they have free ramen included as part of the package and breakfast available for those who want it. The room design showed staff who are thoughtful to travellers.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The onsen n soba
Cons: Tiny room and expensive

Pros: It was traditionally Japanese and beautiful. We had a spacious room with great amenities and a large window facing Mushu Bay. I have great photos but can not attach at the moment.
Cons: No complaints at all. The dinner you can get is good but kind of expensive for what it is.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: - near the train station - the view is fantastic - the public bath is good and the view is also amazing - staffs are good
Cons: - a little bit pricy
7.0 Good
Pros: Staff hospitality and food was more than we expected. They do have some activities that we missed - trip to see fireflies. shamisen performance was also a good choice for guests. Traditional dinner was incomparable and breakfast was the best selection of Japanese unique menus and western ones.
Cons: Staff cannot communicate much in English and not many things to see around the hotel. The town was quiet and not like the other resort where you could enjoy the scenery or walking through the nature. the room was slightly shabby.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Good see view with spring
Cons: Dinner is buffet after 3 kinds Japanese food. It is not similar with general spring hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful onsen! Nice opportunities for walks (hikes) in the surrounding mountains/forests, close to the beach. Pleasant small town. Japanese style rooms are insanely large, for two people it actually was a bit excessive.
7.0 Good
Pros: The onsen overehere is quite large, have different temperature and the view is perfect
Cons: I'm not sure whether this place is a full service ryokan or not but I have been to a place where the staff take you to the room and prep a matcha tea for you so I set there as a high standard. The staff here doesn't take you to the room or have any service except for good smile
9.3 Excellent
Pros: - Room is excellent - Dinner is superb (Love Dinner here so much) - Nice View Room - Very Good facility Onsen - Very Clean and neat - Very Service mind staff - Staff can speak English (Conversation level) - Have Samisen show at night - Very Good location for travel by train (5 minutes walk from station)
Cons: - A little bit expensive (but acceptable) - Outdoor Onsen bathtub is small

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Huge room overlooking the bay and view of the sunset. Very good Breakfast and dinner buffets.Excellent service from front desk to restaurant staff.
Cons: -------
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The view and sunset was amazing. It is 15 mins from Big Buddha. The staff was very friendly and tried their best with English, which was great and made me feel cared for! The sashimi in Set A was wonderful. The buffet food was ok. There was a quick show that was really nice. There is a convenience store only a couple blocks from hotel. Very relaxing hotel with yukata. I only wished I stayed longer.
Cons: 30 mins from Aomori city but there was a train available. I expected our food to be brought to our room like a ryokan I've stayed with before so that was a little disappointing that it was not even an option, but the food we did have (Set A with the sashimi) was absolutely delicious.

Pros: The breakfast was so filling and absolutely delicious with a local flavor. The staff were amazingly friendly, especially the kitchen staff who explained the food and talked about local attractions. The onsen was very nice and great to relax in after a long day. It is a bit of a ride from Aomori city proper on a train, but there are also hikes and other things to do in the area!

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff are really welcoming! The whole place is very quiet and traditional allowing the staff to be more personalised with their services.
Cons: The town in which Tsubakikan is located in is not very convenient. It is a quaint little Japanese seaside onsen town with no convenience stores and restaurants open after 5pm in the winter. The location has got to be the biggest drawback. Tsubakikan is a few minutes walk from the train station Asamushi-onsen, however it is not quite convenient if you want to explore around Aomori.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The dinner and breakfast were superb, great room great onsen, great value of money.
Cons: Nil.

Cons: We drove to the hotel and had to walk in the rain with our luggages as the hotel has no drive in lobby and no onsite covered carpark.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Within 10 mins walking distance from Aomori station which is convenient for tourists who depend on public transportation for sightseeing in Aomori. Lots of choices for food and convenience stores are close by to the hotel.
Cons: No drive in entrance to hotel lobby and carpark for self-drive cars.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very Good ABF. It's a Central of Aomori, 5 minutes by walk. Friendly staff. Quiet place but near a restaurant and bar. It's very lively and convenience to transit.
Cons: Some smoke smell in Non-Smoking room. Not much clean.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very convenient location. Very nice breakfast. Very comfortable bedroom.
Cons: Staffs spoke little English and so didnt provide general info of using the room-key which is different from that of normal's. When i asked for using the common washroom (as my old parent were very urgent) during the check-in, they just looked at me unclear. After the check-in, i raised the same demand. Then immediately they said ok and pointed me to the direction of the washroom. I wondered if they didnt allow us to use the washroom before check-in or just didnt understand my question. The other incident was when we opened our rooms, it was dark as we were not able to turn on the light. I called and then the staff came to us and slot the plastic part of key into a lighted-button to get the light on eventually.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Good location within 300 meters from the train station and restaurants and shops nearby.
Cons: Room was fairly small, even by Japanese standards.

Pros: Good location near JR station.

Pros: Nice staff amd good ryokan. Staff even proposed to wait longer for me since I ran late.

Pros: The staff was very understanding, explained everything to us, and spoke a little English. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese breakfast and very enjoyable. Our room was small but comfortable. There's a bus stop across the street or you can easily walk into the city area.
Cons: There are smoking areas on each floor that aren't sealed.

Pros: I arrived a day earlier and I think the family were taking a day off. They let me stay anywzy! What a relief. So very kind.
7.5 Good
Cons: The public bath is underwhelming.
6.8 Good
Pros: Hirosaki can be summaries as such, a less then interesting city itself with lots of pretty things. The castle and the park, the temple area the samurai quarter etc etc all this are west of the city north to south, the east side is rather ugly really. The place I said is close by to all the important monuments and sights you have to see, that said there was so much snow, the hotel does not have central heating and it was freezing, the room had gas heater to keep it worm.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Good location but quiet room with car parking. Clean room and good speed wifi. Staffs have good hospitality and very helpful. cozy hotel.
Cons: None. But please be informed that the hotel have a black cat.

Pros: The experience is amazing and is definetely worth the trip. The ryokan is in the middle of nature, food is great, beautiful onsens. It’s really a voyage trough time, would love to go again.
Cons: Depends on you sensivity: the futon are not the most comfy, and the smell of oil lamp can bother sensitive nose. BUT HONNESTLY, the experience is so worthy these are just details
7.0 Good
Pros: The location
Cons: No showering facility before bathing in the Onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Such an authentic and traditional onsen! It’s a must visit!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Quaint, charming, authentic onsen, surrounded by beautiful scenery. The room was comfortable, with a lovely view of a hill & stream. The building uses no electricity & uses oil lamps & kerosene heaters instead. There are 4 onsen- something for everyone. I loved the rotemburo & the bath with a view of a small waterfall. Food was AWESOME! I requested vegan meals & they were amazing. Staff- so helpful. Getting to the property was by local bus to Nijinoko Road Station, then by Aoni's free shuttle bus. Scenery was beautiful. For a cheaper fare on the local Konan bus (half price), you can buy return ticket at the bus station. It is conveniently located to the left of the train station, next to the tourist information centre. The return ticket is called the Dousa Yuusa Pass (unsure of the spelling).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food and baths were absolutely incredible—even the coffee was great!
Cons: Nothing!
4.3 Okay
Pros: The Rotenburo was good.
Cons: The place has no electricity. That means you cant charge your camera/phone/etc But most important, it has no A/C. At the time I went there, the temperature was minus 0, and the method they used to warm the room was by fuel. I can't express the toxicity of that... It made my head hurt so hard that had to turn it off, freezing me in the act (but at least I didn't die by poisoning). Terrible idea to have no electric or gas heaters. That being said. They have electricity, but only the staff can use it. It's also VERY expensive.
7.5 Good
Pros: Pick up service from bus station. Traditional japanese breakfast and dinner were delicious. Nice and cozy atmosphere with all the oil lamps. The onsen in front of the main entrance is so beautiful, especially when the sun is shining. Even there is no electricity the rooms are heated by gas heaters.
Cons: The welcoming was not the best, but we realized that they just not had a good day. No english at all. If you don’t know some japanese words, it can be a challenge. But the staff really try’s. The outdoor bath looks better on the picture, then in real. But we went in winter, so it might be different in other seasons. Keep in mind that you can’t leave the ryokan in winter by your self. You need to take the shuttle bus.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very helpful staff that provided guidance on how to reach their remote ryokan. The different onsen at the property were all very relaxing and enjoyable. Dinner and breakfast were very, very satisfying. Kerosene lamps made for a very beautiful aesthetic. Very nice to be disconnected (no electricity and no cell service) after a long week at work.
Cons: Part of the allure is how remote the property is, but as a result, make sure you plan your trip to the ryokan well beforehand, especially if taking public transportation. I had not realised how infrequently trains and buses may run in Aomori prefecture (sometimes only once an hour or once every few hours), so what I had expected to be a 1.5 hour journey from Aomori city turned out to be nearly 4 hours, which unfortunately cut my trip to Aomori (and stay at the ryokan) short by a few precious hours.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Wow, what a beautiful, unique, incredible time capsule this place is! I absolutely will try to come back every time I come to Japan. Our room was fantastic and had a waterfall view, and it was so lovely to wake up to the sound of rushing water and the mountain views. The Onsen were incredible - four different onsens, most with a larger pool and a smaller pool that was a bit cooler and closer to the view. There were about 60 guests when we were there, probably about 70% of them Japanese and 30% westerners of all nationalities. The Onsen were never very crowded, at most we saw 1 or 2 other guests while we were there. This was a very traditional place, and I had to be a bit adventurous with the food, and my adventurousness was duly rewarded with delicious breakfasts and dinners and a richer understanding of Japanese culture. The staff really went above and beyond. I was confused and thought I had pre-paid on booking.com, but I hadn't and they required cash payment and we did not have enough. So one of the staff members, Mizuki Sato, actually took us in her car to an ATM in Kuroishi station, and made sure we still made it in time for our train!
Cons: Make no mistake, this place is remote. From Shin-Aomori station, we had to take a limited express train to Hirosaki, then a small train to Kuroishi, then about 25 minutes for a bus to Nijinoko, then another 20 minutes for the shuttle to the hotel. Make sure you ask the hotel in advance about the bus and shuttle times because there are not many each day. But like I said, it was so very worth it for this very special place.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place to get away from the frantic pace of everyday life and just forget about the world. Food was amazing, staff were very helpful and whole experience was awesome.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This Ryokan was very close to the train station....like less than 100 meters walk. The staff were very friendly. The rooms were large and well appointed. The inn was very clean and the onsen bath was nice after a day of travel. The breakfast was also very good.
Cons: The onsen baths were closed after 8:30 AM until 1:00 pm for cleaning, so we could not take a bath on our departure day. This was surprising and unfortunate.
