See my review on TripAdviser, copied below The ownership of the hotel changed a few months ago (summer 2019) so the description of facilities on bookings.com and other sites needs to be updated, in particular there’s no on-site coffee shop and certainly no fruit, chocolate or cookies in our room as listed in facilities on bookings.com. Unusually for a hotel in France, there’s no bar or anywhere to get a drink after a long day site seeing, or before walking into Saumur to eat. Our room (suite) was two large bedrooms and a bathroom with shower. I suppose it’s a feature of a house this old that the floor boards will creak, but next to the bed in the master bedroom was a broken floorboard, which simply isn’t acceptable in a hotel of this grade. The tap in the sink needed new washers or something similar, as it was difficult to turn off and once dripping the whole system created deep growling noises, which are not good at 4.00 a.m. Breakfast was somewhat disappointing. I saw one review referring to bacon and eggs, but on arrival Mathieu (the new owner) made it clear breakfast was a simple continental affair of bread and croissants, which we subsequently found didn’t even include cold meats or cheese.
Very often there was nobody onsite to deal with any queries. One night an alarm appeared to have gone off, but the manager (and from what we saw, the sole employee) Isabel knew nothing about this and was at her home. Similarly, after returning from a day out, there was nobody around to give us towels for the sun beds. We were thinking of using the pool, but it had a cover on and we were subsequently told it had algae in it and they were waiting for a man to fix it. Similarly, the hotel is advertised as a Spa, but the jacuzzi was in a locked building by the pool and there was no evidence of any spa treatments onsite. Unfortunately, Isabel’s spoken English is about as good as my schoolboy French, and this made conversations about anything very difficult. Therefore, on finding we had no spare toilet roll in the bathroom, we ended up having to take one from the toilet in the communal area downstairs The hotel is a 20 to 25 minute walk out of Saumur, with only one restaurant on the way in, the excellent Le Pot de Lapin, but you can book a taxi through Isabel to take you into the centre, or to other restaurants in the Saumur area. If walking, you should wear good sensible shoes as the disused road down to the riverside is very poorly surfaced with lots of loose stones and watch out for the brambles on the walk back in the dark. The final insult, having prepaid with bookings.com, when we were leaving we were given a bill for our 4 nights stay and have to argue in broken French and English with Isabel that we had already paid, showing her the email confirmation of payment which I then emailed to the hotel. This was particularly odd as we’d had a confirmation of an early checkin time and obviously they had had our reservation sent to them. We had heard other groups on cycle touring holidays having the same problem which they blamed on their operator. I won’t speculate further on this matter, I’ll leave it for the reader to reach their own conclusions.
A great place above the City!
The menoir is nice place. The room was decorated sympathically. Isabelle who received us was very nice.
Room is not big and too full with things: extra sofa, table etc.. Couldnt stand in bath because ceiling slope too law. Breakfast is very minimal. The swimming pool was closed.
Lovely traditional Manoir with quirky (but good quirky) touches
The ambience, history, the garden, the view, the table tennis, the breakfast and finally the personel in charge.
