This 16th-century inn is in the beautiful Wye Valley, in the cider orchards between Hereford and Hay-on-Wye. It has free on-site parking, free Wi-Fi, a traditional bar and a modern restaurant. The Portway Inn is a traditional country inn. It is in quiet countryside on the A438, near Staunton-on-Wye and less than 10 miles from Hereford city centre. The inn has been carefully restored and has original wooden beams, quiet gardens and a real log fire. The large en suite rooms have TVs and tea/coffee. Some rooms have a traditional style and some are more modern. The Portway Inn offers a seasonal menu, featuring home-cooked dishes made with fresh, local produce. Food is available in the traditional, oak-beamed bar and the modern restaurant.
On one of the coldest weekends of the winter we were provided with extra bedding and a heater for our room so we were very comfortable, breakfast was enough to nearly last us all day! The restaurant meals were also very good.
Booking in was rather difficult we arranged to book in between 4.30.and 5.00 (the hotel is closed between 2.30 and 6.00) we arrived at 4.30 to find the hotel locked and no way of making ourselves heard, we had to leave a message on the hotel phone and we eventually got in about 4.45. We were shown to our room ( room 7) only to find that the extractor pipe for kitchen was directly outside the window and was extremly noisy. We contacted the manager who moved us to another room so the problem was resolved for us but if the hotel had been fully booked this may have been a bigger problem.
nice bar with log fire
bathroom was absolutely freezing and no complimetary shampoo. room was also cold on arrival - had to turn the heating on when I arrived - would normally expect this to have been done prior to my arrival
A very pleasant hotel with friendly owner and staff. A very relaxing break.
Friendly owner, food was excellent with a wonderful breakfast. The room was comfortable and the location was ideal for the areas attractions.
The food was excellent and the rooms were nicely refurbished.
Attention of the owner and staff. Food and rooms very good, priced well.
Breakfast chef wandering around restaurant, untidily dressed. Log fire not lit on second night.
Very nice relaxing lounge area with big comfortable chairs where you could while away a couple of hours reading
The room had a queen size bed not a double. The overall cleanliness was suspect, we accidentally dropped a napkin on the floor in the dining room at the evening meal and it was still there at breakfast. There were a number of flies around the dining room and bedroom.
Friendly & welcoming staff, good food, excellent value for money
Perhaps the shower could have been better but that is being really picky!
Staff very nice, good value.
No provision for early check in. Had to sit in cold car till noon when the Inn opened for lunch. Online reservation indicated that we had paid up front. The hotel explained that we had not and this was perennial misunderstanding with customers.
