Couple holding hands and walking together into the sparkling clear ocean from a tropical beach, with a bright sun illuminating the distant, forested mountains.

Set your sights on warm places to visit in October peak shoulder season is a great time to reach for the sun. The highs of summer prices and temperatures are falling fast. Schools are back, so destinations are quieter. And if you’re happy to travel long haul, some extraordinary places are at their best.

Fall may have transformed much of the Northern Hemisphere into a panoply of pastel colors, but in many places the sun still shines and the rains are yet to arrive. Florida, the Middle East and Southeast Asia in particular can be great at this time of year.

Best warm places to visit in October in the US

Much of the mainland US cools fast in fall, but there are pockets of warmth, particularly on the coasts. Beyond my far-ranging picks, KAYAK data points to Honolulu as another Hawai‘ian hotspot. And of course, LA is always popular, with mild temperatures and little to no rain.

1. Miami, Florida

An aerial view of a resort with tall residential buildings overlooking the swimming pools facing the beach.
  • Average October temperature: 81°F

With its laid-back vibe, white-sand beaches, and swaying palms, Miami always looks like it should be warm. The peak summer months are almost unbearably hot and busy. But as October rolls around, temperatures level off to what I would call perfect.

The monthly average is 81°F, the average high 86°F. That’s beach weather, and in October the crowds are non-existent compared to spring and summer. Beyond South Beach, hit Bal Harbour to see and be seen, or Virginia Key Beach Park for solitude and great views.

You may have to dodge the odd heavy rain shower, but there are enough museums and galleries to entertain you for days. At the unique Museum of Graffiti, check out the excellent Art of Hip Hop exhibition. If you’re inspired to try your hand, head to the legendary Wynwood Walls street art experience.

2. Kailua-Kona, Island of Hawai’i

  • Average October temperature: 75°F

On the Big Island’s western side, Kona Town (as it’s commonly called) is a great launching point into the Kona Coast and the island’s many natural wonders. October is still warm enough to enjoy them all with average temperatures in the mid 70s and highs climbing to the mid 80s.

Beach-wise, you’re spoilt for choice. Kamakahonu Beach close to the main pier offers calm waters and family friendly vibes. To the south, Kahalu’u Bay is a snorkeling wonderland and home to a great education center. Nearby, Laʻaloa Beach, known as Magic Sands, is a bodysurfing hotspot.

3. San Diego, California

A hidden beach nestled amidst rugged coasts unveils its serene beauty, with buildings peeking through the landscape and swaying palms.
A grand, ornate building with intricate carvings and arches, viewed through a stone archway lined with columns.
A row of majestic palm trees stands tall along the coast, framing the picturesque view of a city skyline with towering skyscrapers across the shimmering waters.
  • Average October temperature: 66°F

There’s a reason San Diegans prefer their city in the fall to summer. Average temperatures hover in the mid-60s to 70s, so it’s still warm enough to linger on beaches and dine al fresco. Rain isn’t a part of the conversation and skies remain blue and crystal clear.

Being just warm rather than hot can deter many visitors. It’s their loss because seldom is San Diego more spectacular than under a fall sunset viewed from the rugged beaches of Torrey Pines or Blacks. End-of-summer swells and warm offshore Santa Ana winds only add to the majesty.

After the summer parties have died down, the city itself returns to its laid-back best. Cruise Ocean Front Walk, ride the roller coasters of Belmont Park.

4. Austin, Texas

Texas State Capitol is a renaissance revival dome structure surrounded by a cluster of city buildings in front of a park with intersecting walkways across wide green lawns and lush trees.
  • Average October temperature: 70°F

Despite its metamorphosis from the early days of “keep Austin weird” into the live music capital of the world, Texas’s big-hearted city remains as welcoming as ever. With average high temperatures around 82°F and very little rain, it’s the perfect month to linger outside at one of the city’s biggest music festivals.

For the first two weekends of the month, Austin City Limits transforms Zilker Park into a stage for the world’s biggest musicians. Or rather, nine stages, more than 100 acts and thousands of revellers enjoying stretching summer into fall. There are few better ways to spend an October weekend. Or two.

5. Orlando, Florida

Beautiful scenery of white swans on a tranquil lake overlooking the urban cityscape.
  • Average October temperature: 75°F

If it’s October warmth you seek but you’re a realist to the chances of inclement weather, Orlando is a great option. That goes double if you have kids. You’ll find warm temperatures and among the most affordable hotel stays in Florida (around $171 a night in October).

When the skies are clear, it offers everything you need. Nearby beaches include Daytona, New Smyrna (great surfing) and Clearwater. Also not far away, the epic Everglades for a headlong dive into nature. In Downtown Orlando, Lake Eola Park is an urban oasis. Al fresco eating is also on the cards with no fewer than 48 Orlando restaurants winners of Michelin honors.

When the weather does turn, you’ll be equally spoiled for choice. Disney World, Universal Resort, Legoland and Harry Potter’s Wizarding World are the main attractions, drawing tens of millions of visitors annually. More cerebral yet no less fun is the amazing Kennedy Space Center, just 50 miles away.

6. Las Vegas, Nevada

A person stands on the edge of a magnificent rock formation, adorned with captivating streaks and lines, overlooking the vast expanse of a desert landscape.

  • Average October temperature: 70°F

There’s much more to Las Vegas than the Strip (though it’s always worth spending a night indulging its attractions.) City temperatures average 70°F in October, but highs climb to 81° and hotel prices are under $200 a night. Beyond the city, the Mojave Desert is also hot. My tip is to skip the rainbow glow of the Strip and head West.

Along the way stop off in Chinatown to feast on Asian cuisine and rub shoulders with the big resort chefs on downtime. Walk around European-styled Tivoli Village where you can shop til you drop in Boca Park or swing some clubs at the TPC.

Further west, escape the city at the Red Rock National Conservation Area with 30 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails.

Book into the Red Rock Resort & Spa and ask for a room with a Red Rock view so you can stare out over the sandstone cliffs. The perfect tonic to Sin City behind you.

Warm places to visit in October in the Middle East

If it’s absolutely guaranteed summer-level heat you want, the hottest countries in October are in the Middle East.

7. Medina, Saudi Arabia

People walking across the tiled floor of a courtyard covered with fluted-edged decorative sun shades.
  • Average October temperature: 84°F

One of Islam’s holiest cities, Medina attracts millions of pilgrims every year for Hajj or Umrah. The gradual opening and marketing of Saudi Arabia as a tourist destination is also now attracting more and more visitors to its many natural wonders.

October is a fabulous time to visit if you like it hot. Temperatures average a balmy 84°F and regularly climb into the high 90s. Rain is not on the cards.

At the city’s heart, the striking green dome of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque) rises over the tomb of the Prophet Muhammad. It is just one of a wealth of incredibly powerful holy sites spread across the city. Access is limited in places for tourists, but the atmosphere is incomparable.

8. Dubai, UAE

A person in a bokeh backdrop of modern skyscrapers against the calming sunrise sky.

  • Average October temperature: 82°F

Even if you haven’t been to Dubai, you’ll know about its reputation for excess and wealth – the urban definition of bigger is better. Yet even forearmed with such knowledge, nothing prepares you for the reality of visiting. A shade cooler than Medina in October, it still cooks with average highs over 90°F.

No problem though – this is the shopping and socializing capital of the world. The mega malls, marinas, restaurants, hotels and clubs offer myriad escapes from the heat. And when you do want to top your Vitamin D, top up your tan in with a stroll through the Dubai Miracle Gardens or an adrenaline-fuelled flyboard across Dubai Harbour.

Best warm places to visit in October in Asia

If you’re happy to invest in the price of a plane ticket, Asia is a tropical oasis in October. Hot, humid, thriving and alive – it’s a wakeup call to the senses. If it’s a megacity you’re after, KAYAK data shows Hong Kong swelters close to 80°F with high humidity. Trust me though, it’s worth every drop of sweat.

9. Bangkok, Thailand

A metropolitan skyline adorned by modern skyscrapers under a sunset sky.

  • Average September temperature: 82°F

Bangkok in the fall is hot and wet. It simmers in the heat year round and is well adapted to it. But October’s temperatures and humidity also bring rain, an average of nine inches. Heavy but predictable, arm yourself with an umbrella and dive in.

This actually makes it a magical time to visit. It’s just about the quietest month, which means fewer tour groups, smaller queues, and much lower prices. According to KAYAK data, the average hotel price in October is around $80 a night.

The rain also gives the city a completely different feel. The air is cleaner and fresher, the greens greener and the pace dialed down to just below its manic status quo.

Rain or no rain, Bangkok is still a sensory overload – from the reclining Buddha of Wat Pho to Chinatown’s street food and Chatuchak’s weekend market.

10. Singapore

A dazzling rooftop infinity pool lined with sun loungers under the sunlit palm trees and a stunning city skyline view.
  • Average October temperature: 81°F

As in Bangkok, Singapore sees its fair share of rain in October. An average eight inches, according to KAYAK data, matched with temperatures peaking in the mid-80s. Expect to get wet – from both rain and humidity.

Singapore is a result of its geography and geopolitics. A fusion of cultures and religions, tradition and modernity, mind-boggling architecture, and deafeningly quiet spaces. It’s an intoxicating mix.

Beyond the spectacular glitz of the Marina Bay Sands, there’s plenty of old Singapore to discover. By day, wander the photogenic Pernakan enclave of Katong. As the sun sets, make for Tanjong Pagar, home to some of the world’s best bars, including my favorite, Sago House.

For authentic Singaporean nostalgia, take a ferry to the tiny island of Pulau Ubin. Rent a bike at the island jetty and pedal into a different time past kampongs (villages) and spectacular water-filled quarries.

Where is hot and cheap in October?

In the US, many of the warmer destinations come with serious price tags. According to KAYAK data, Orlando and Miami are the most attractive cheap destinations. Average temperatures hold at 75°F and 81°F respectively but highs for both average a sweltering 84 to 86°F. Hotel prices average at around $170 a night.

If your budget stretches to flights, the best tropical destinations in October are in Southeast Asia. On the ground, Ho Chi Minh City is the definition of hot and cheap. Temperatures average 81°F and hotel prices average $49 a night.

Kuala Lumpur is another great option – average temperatures are the same as HCMC and hotels just a shade pricier at $59 a night on average. Need help making a decision? Try KAYAK Explore.
