  • How to get to and from Kona International Airport to downtown Kailua-Kona?

Cars, taxis, and shuttles are the main forms of transportation connecting Kona International Airport to Kailua-Kona. Unfortunately for tourists on a budget, the airport has very limited public bus service connecting it with neighboring towns and cities. Nonetheless, it is easy to get into the city from the airport, and shuttles in particular are your cheapest bet if you don’t plan on renting a vehicle.

  • What shopping options are available in Kona International Airport?

The shopping selection at Kona International Airport is small and sweet. After all, it is one of the smaller airports serving one of the less populated islands of Hawaii. All the same, they have a few shops that will fit the bill for most of your souvenir and gift needs. Some of these shops include Tiare’s Gift Shop, Aloha News Stand, and Cho’s Leis & Flowers.

  • What is there to do while in Kona International Airport?

Though there is not much in the terminals in the way of entertainment, the airport is actually just around the corner from Wawaloli Beach Park. The conveniently close beach offers travelers an easy way to kill an hour or two before their flight.

  • What hotels and resorts near Kona International Airport offer transport services?

Tourism is one of Hawaii’s biggest industries and fortunately this means many of the hotels and resorts surrounding Kona International Airport offer complimentary airport pickup and drop-off. Some of these hotels include the likes of The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, Wyndham Mauna Loa Village, and Banyan Tree Sanctuary.

  • If I want to take a taxi from the airport, where can I find them?

If you wish to take a taxi, you will find them directly outside the terminal building outside baggage claims A and B. Taxi services are provided by various independent companies and are not associated with the airport. It is also worth noting that you will need to negotiate the price of your ride with your driver in advance. KOA has a fare estimator on their website for you to consult in advance depending on your final destination.

  • Does the Kona Airport offer services for those with limited mobility?

Yes, there are services available for travelers with reduced mobility available at the Kona Airport. Due to the lack of ramps for deplaning, you will need to request boarding lift service from your airline in advance. Otherwise, motorized wheelchairs are available for rent and the rest of the facilities are accessible.

  • Can I fly directly to Kailua-Kona from other major US cities?

Yes, you will find that there is one major US hub that offers direct service to the Kona International Airport (KOA), Los Angeles (LAX). Direct flights are typically operated by United Airlines and American Airlines.

  • Can I take a shuttle to my hotel close to the Kona International Airport (KOA)?

Unfortunately, there is no free shuttle service to or from the Kona airport. You will typically be taking the SpeediShuttle to reach your destination if you are not renting a car and need to get to your hotel nearby.

  • What is the difference between the most popular and the most frequent airline at Kailua-Kona?

Your guide to booking Kailua-Kona flights

From booking to airport arrival, find tips to help you plan your flight with more confidence.
  • For the best chance at a low fare to Kailua-Kona, aim to book around 5 weeks before you fly. That window historically saves about 13% versus last-minute pricing based on KAYAK booking data over the last 12 months.
  • For flights to Kailua-Kona, recent KAYAK data shows that stronger deals tend to land around $427 round-trip. If you see a fare below that threshold, it's a strong deal – book before the price climbs back up.
  • If you can choose when to go, time your trip to Kailua-Kona around January. Round-trip fares historically average $479 that month – typically the cheapest month to travel based on the last 12 months.
  • Before you book:

    • Check the route's typical price range so you can spot a deal.
    • Confirm baggage fees and seat-selection costs on budget carriers.
    • Verify whether you need any travel documents beyond ID.
    • Pick a departure airport, since your nearest may not be the cheapest origin.
  • Shift your departure to afternoon to save up to $165 per round-trip. Afternoon flights to Kailua-Kona average $516 compared to $681 for evening flights. See the time-of-day chart above for the full breakdown.
  • Bag allowances vary by airline, fare type, cabin class and route. On flights to Kailua-Kona, some airlines may include bags at no extra cost. For example, Alaska Airlines includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy Class, United Airlines includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy Class and Alaska Airlines includes a cabin bag and a checked bag in Economy Class. Always check the fare details before booking, since bag policies can change by ticket type.
  • Visitors to the Island of Hawaii (also known as the Big Island) may find themselves landing at one of two airports serving the island. Namely, Hilo International Airport (ITO) and Kona International Airport (KOA). Hilo International Airport primarily services the eastern portion of the island, while Kona International Airport offers flights to Kailua-Kona and its surrounding area.
  • Travelers with pets should be aware that Hawaii has very strict quarantine rules and that all pets must receive proper vaccinations and proof of such prior to their arrival in Hawaii. If you fail to bring such documentation with you, your animals could be quarantined for a lengthy amount of time.
  • Looking to grab a bite to eat after your flight to Kailua-Kona? While Kona International Airport is not the largest of airports, it still provides a decent restaurant and snack selection for hungry travelers. One good option to check out is Laniakea by Centerplate, which serves a variety of local Hawaiian fare.
  • Speedishuttle is one of the best ways to get around the Island of Hawaii for tourists. They offer door-to-door pickup service from Kona International Airport to destinations all across the island. So, whether you want to get to your resort or go straight to a volcano for a bit of hiking, they have you covered.
  • Want to jump right into tourism mode upon your arrival in Kona International Airport? Consider purchasing flowers and leis at one of the flower stands in the airport. After all, there’s nothing that screams Hawaii more than a traditional lei.
  • If you are renting a car when you arrive at Kona International Airport (KOA), you will have to make your way to the offsite rental counters. You can take the free airport shuttle to the rental car center. You will find the shuttle pickup point at the center median across the street from baggage claims A and B.
  • If you are arriving at KOA with your pet or service animal, you will only find one pet relief area across the street from the Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center near the former car rental facility.
  • If you are hungry when you land and want to grab a bite to eat, the restaurants at the airport have opening hours based on flight arrival times so you are guaranteed to find something. There are plenty of local specialties, such as Laniakea by Centerplate, available in the terminal.
  • If you are not sure where to go after you land at the Kona International Airport, you can make use of the Visitor Information Program onsite. The program is staffed from 7:45am to 9pm daily and when it isn’t staffed, you can call the toll-free number to get assistance.
  • If you want to relax before heading into the city, you can head to the only lounge at the airport: the Hawaiian Air Premier Club in the passenger gate area.

Seated at front bulkhead for a smidge extra leg room away from home and on flight back home. Away crew was very proactive about assuring our carryons had space close behind us (because no seat in front of us our personal items had to be in a small bin overhead). They actively required passengers place overhead luggage on its side so more items could fit in bins. Home crew made no such efforts. I had to struggle back rows to get overhead bags upon landing, no crew help then either, and some disgruntled passengers as I and others retrieved our bags. There was a system that worked pretty well. The home bound crew just didn't feel like working.

Southwest has inacted unfriendly customer policies like other airlines. Watch the fine print very carefully if you are having to alter flight arrangements. Rules are now complicated and very stilted to travelers sacrificing travel funds (unlike before where the simple, straight forward flight change policy was worth the extra premium for ticket price.) On the positive side, SW Flight crews are still wonderfully helpful.

The crew was very kind and made going to Hawaii relaxing and fun to look forward to! Thank you Southwest for a pleasant flight!

I liked the crew member who gave flight instructions on "in case of a problem:. The seats are so small that only a young teenager could sit in middle seat.

I recently flew Southwest from San Jose to Honolulu. I was very impressed with the flight crew, especially the flight attendant in charge of the front of the plane. She came through the aisle at least five times for drinks and water, and two times for snacks. I have not seen such service since I flew first class. Also, for the first time, they gave us the correct baggage claim number, and the luggage came out quickly. I can't wait for Southwest to have assigned seating! I absolutely hate the Cattle Call boarding procedure and the mad dash to get seats and overhead bins. However, the boarding was efficient.

Much better than the.last. flight on SW on Thanksgiving day

Unfortunately it was not a good experience. There was a rude stewardess.

Boarding was well explained and smooth. The flight was short, so there was no time for snacks. They did offer water or juice, though.

The flight was very short, 45 mins, therefore no snacks/drinks were provided; there should be a NA option for food and entertainment survey questions. Also, there were no charging ports onboard for cell phones. My experience was overall positive.

Price was right. Add power to the seats, television, larger plane to accommodate a long flight to improve mental health and overall comfort for a 5 hour flight.

It was fine. It was a 30 minute flight so there was water or fruit juice and no food. Which was totally fine. The check in, gate and flight crew were all excellent.

I didn’t order food so can’t really say how it was. Overall, it was a great experience.

Had to sit and wait to get off the plane for closeto a hour. My son also flying to a different destination that day also had like a 2.5 hr delay

Tickets we booked together in January became two different connecting flights. VERY PISSED a about this and a terrible start to our bucket list vacation

Flight was delayed which led to missed connection, but rebooked on a more direct flight at the last minute and arrived in Juneau on time with all our luggage. Little stressful and our family seating got split, but it all worked out in the end.

they didn't fix a plane and we were delayed travelling an extra 12 hours.

This flight was how a flight should be. The flight from Hawaii to Seattle was terrible

While the flight itself was pleasant, the process of checking in was difficult. The line was long and our connection time was but two hours. When we finally got to the Hawaiian agent and told him that we were traveling on Alaskan Airlines, he told us we would need to go to a different terminal. I told him that another Hawaiian Airlines agent had directed us to him. I’m looking at our tickets, he noticed that the Alaskan Airlines flight was to be managed by a second party. He ended admonish us for not telling us so Rather than considering that we might’ve been right in the first place.

Plane left an hour late due to flight staffing problems. Only a 45 min flight, but it took 3 hours as a result, which left a lot of people disgruntled. No excuses. No recompense.

The staff are friendly and happy, the check in online was easy and dropping off the bags went well with out problem.

Seats were not bad enough and uncomfortable good legroom in the emergency exit row we were in, but we were forbidden to hold my grandson on my lap for a little while, and the stewardess passed us saying it was against regulations which makes little or no sense when you’re 36,000 feet. The food snacks were really bad. Tasteless tasted like wallpaper, but we’re supposed to be protein bars, and the announcements were all completely incoherent because of the noise of the airplane and the lowness and crackly nature of the PA system.. this was disgraceful. No one in our party could understand a word of what the captain or the flight attendant were saying —not a word! The landing was a little hairy in a pretty stiff crosswind -we bounced before the plane stabilized on the runway

Crew was nice, meal was good. Entertainment had to be rebooted 3 times and still did not work. Turns out there was residue on screen, it needed to be cleaned to prevent the touchscreen buttons from continuously activating. I had entertainment for the last 45 minutes of a 5 hour 45 minute flight. Really unacceptable for first class. Flight attendent indicated your cleaning solution creates this problem. Seems as if this is widely known, you should be using a different product or cleaning better. Really really disappointing which simply added to the wi fi on your planes with reliably never ever works.

Long flight but comfortable and not freezing as I have experienced on Hawaiian flights to the islands. They gave us blankets just in case. Nice touch.

NEVER MADE THE FLIGHT BECAUSE DELTA SAID THEY CAN NOT

Everything I mentioned earlier - the airbus was more comfortable indeed and the experience was further enhanced.

First class and monitors weren’t working for mine & my husbands. Eventually fixed, but quite annoyed as we bought first class. Also, No foot rests.

It would be nice if was given wires ear buds. Overall was a good experience was able to sleep on the plane

Delta seems to be improving in many areas, except they are super bad with the food available. Bring back normal food service on long flights.

Paid premium for Delta only to be on safe but tired old 767 with ancient cabin in mediocre condition. Poor wifi and horrible inflight entertainment. Hardly a premium experience. Should have flown SW and had fun flight crew and no pretense

The plane from SNA wouldn’t start after 5 tries. The team gave me an option of flying direct from LAX and giving me a Lyft ride there! Perfect!

Great staff. Clean plane, but we were delayed for more than an hour due to maintenance issues and had to board another plane.

Overall a good experience, but no wifi available for free or for purchase and we got wet from condensation or other water source during descent.

I’m so sorry, I can’t remember her name, I believe it was Dimpti. She was stellar, also a mature Asian flight attendant, lots of flowers in her hair, just as amazing! But literally the crew was AWESOME . Only downside is there weren’t any charging outlets. Maybe I needed to ask a flight attendant , but it would’ve been nice to have one easily accessible.

Older aircraft, no meal, only food was for purchase. Not impressed United.

Stuck on tarmac for two hours plus a 5.5 hour flight. Rude flight attendant. And no meals, not even for purchase!

I learned that seating towards the end of plane that a line forms for the restroom and people use your chair as a hand railing, bumping your seat consistently. I was seated in the aisle. I think that next time if I am towards the back row I would want to sit in the middle or window seat.

Boarding seemed to be organized bedlam. For what ever reason, preboarding took longer than 20 minutes. Made the plane 20 minutes late taking off. Luckily we arrived on time. Flight crew seemed very friendly. Only slight turbulence.

The personnel were professional and friendly. The Boeing 737 Max 9 is too claustrophobic and was very warm at both airport gates, and still warm in the air.

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

Everything was great, only problem was that flights were delayed

Luggage handling and communication is extremely poor. I landed in india 15th and recived luggage today. Based on my itag the luggage was in Germany. They kept me in dark. Etihad num er in india was non operatuonal. Had to call USA etihad. It should not be so difficullt. I came for 1 week business trip everything was screwed . This is the first and also will be last for me

There was no service on the flight even though there was no turbulence or any other issues on the flight. Nobody greeted at the entry or leaving the airplane, staff crew looked annoyed and not helpful at all.

mechanical problem delayed more than 2 hours on the run way.

Flight pulled out on time but sat on runway for 30 mins. It was extremely cold in the aircraft despite wearing a winter coat. Surprisingly they had a vegetarian meal but could have some better snack choices for a 8 hour flight.

For a 5 1/2 hour flite i considered the "business class" to be subpar. The seats were just ok, no amenities, really nothing more than a long domestic flight. Frankly disappointed.

More choices on snacks. Built-in video screen to enjoy entertainment choices.

Almost a 6 hour flight and the only food option is a cheese plate… and chips. Also how is it there are no options for texting on American. I’ll be going back to delta and united.

Angela was the best fa ever. She made that 8 hour flight a breeze

Crew were attentive and friendly. Flight was smooth and early! I enjoyed the less crowded plane. Thank you!

Being back games on the in-flight entertainment. Also your flight attendants need a break, raise, or overall attitude adjustment.
