I travelled from the English Midlands, to visit the Jacques Tati museum in St Severe sur Indre, about 10 miles from Genouillac. I was looking for a reasonably priced hotel for a couple of nights. Being an older gentleman (68), and English as well, I hate places where you are fussed over, with obsequiousness and false bonhomie. In Le Relais d'Oc, I found a perfect place to stay. What you see is what you get. It is a small, commercial hotel in a lovely, unspoiled, rural town. The proprietor is equally lovely and unspoiled - friendly and helpful but not at all pushy. It's not touristy and there are few attractions in the area, other than the lovely French countryside and a superb museum to Jacques Tati and his film, "Jour de Fete", at St. Severe sur Indre, a few miles away. My room was simple but scrupulously clean. The hotel has a bar and an attached restaurant. I speak only a little schoolboy French, mostly nouns, and the proprietor spoke very little English but, with willing on both sides, we got along famously and had mutual satisfaction in communicating effectively (and that, after all, is the real point in visiting other countries and cultures). Breakfast was of the standard Continental type, and dinner was an excellent three course meal, with wine and coffee, for a very reasonable price. We had fun with me explaining that I was vegetarian; we negotiated with some words and sign language and I ended up with a very pleasant meal - a starter, an omelette and salad, with chocolate mousse to finish. I really enjoyed my stay here and can thoroughly recommend the hotel and the area, though I suspect that families with young children may struggle to find sufficient activities locally. For those of more mature years, the hotel and the countryside are an absolute delight and the hotel would make a perfect stopover on the way to and from the south of France.
I would have quite liked tea and coffee facilities in the bedroom, though they were available downstairs. I had a bedroom facing the street and, during the day, a few lorries went past, but they stopped quite early and I slept happily all night with the windows open.
