What are the pros of staying at Hotel Universal?
The hotel is nicely located between the train station and the historical center of Santiago. It's also strategically located nearby some places where excursions start from. The staff was very friendly and helpful all the time. The location and the public parking house in front. Staff were super friendly and place was very clean. The location was excellent, and the facilities were okay. Breakfast was excellent. The location is perfect. The rooms are very comfortable. Friendly staff and good location-good value. Great location, helpful team. Great location for Pilgrims. The rooms are clean and being updated. Fantastic location with a wonderful choice of cafes, bars and shops surrounding. Very clean and close to train station. Great Location for our stay and we travelled to Madrid by train which was really close. Staff were helpful and friendly, breakfast was very good, bed was comfortable and plenty of hot water for bath and shower. The location is closer to the old town and basilica, clean and spacious room. Very easy to get to from the airport as the 6A bus stops outside the hotel. Staff were helpful and room comfortable. Great location to the downtown old city. Clean rooms and bath. Ideal location on El Camino. The staff was lovely and accommodating. Clean and tidy. It was convenient. The location was great and everyone helpful. Hotel has a brilliant location. Bus from airport stops right outside the hotel. It's about 8 mins from the centre of Santiago, but nice and quiet, with a lovely park outside the door. Great room, lots of space, and very spacious bathroom with bath. Clean room and bathroom. Very central location 5-10 minute walk to Cathedral. Location was perfect and everything was straight forward. The room was comfortable and so was the shower. The location was excellent. Close to the cathedral, the bus to the airport and all the restaurants and stores. Great location. Excellent restaurant recommended from the receptionist. Close location to restaurants and shopping as well as the cathedral. The Hotel is very well located. Facilities exceptional. Lovely breakfast. Staff exceptional. Ideal location to stay after completing the Way Of Staniago. The hotel is conveniently located near the old town streets where there are 'countless' restaurants and shops to browse and choose from - all within easy walking distance of the hotel. The Cathedral, the Parc and other sites are within 5km or so and easy to find with Google Maps or other GPS. Location is fantastic. I will recommend this hotel. ?. Located near St. James Cathedral and also right next to a taxi stand. Excellent location. Staff very helpful and friendly. Leaving early so hotel provided a take away breakfast for me, which was appreciated. Nice, clean, and efficient hotel. Great overall experience. Close to the centre, clean rooms, two elevators, good size bathroom, 24-hour reception. Hotel is located very close to the city center. Room was spacious and comfortable. Internet connection was good. Good: - have breakfast - clean - location. Very good staff, well situated for the modern part of the city, but not in the old part of town. Good for a late night stop.
What are the cons of staying at Hotel Universal?
The glass screen of the shower was too short; the floor was regularly splashed after showering. The light switches of the room were not convenient as they controlled the full lighting system of the room. The room could be slightly upgraded, newer blinds - maybe more lights and power outlets and an option to just have the bedside lamp on without also having the overhead on. Very minor changes. That there was no fridge (minibar) and the bed was too soft for me. Interestingly, we were not able to adjust the room temperature in the room on our own, even though there was a thermostat. We complained about it to the receptionist, and he was very helpful and friendly as he was willing to adjust the temperature. We couldn't do it ourselves, for there is a control room next to the reception desk. Anyhow, on the second day, the room was again too cold, and we went to see the receptionist. We complained again about the room temperature, but this receptionist who was different from the first day was not so friendly in answering my questions, and the room temperature was not changed even though she said she would. So disappointed with her service. An earlier check in would have been appreciated. The shower head didn't stay in position and the water went everywhere, especially on the floor. Had to hold it in my hand all the time. Rooms are old, not big, full of moisture and the smell was really bad even we have already changed one room. There was also fungus on the walls. Also you can’t switch on just light next to the bed, because when you switch it you turn on lights everywhere in the room. Personally overrated and too pricy for the quality. Rooms were small, but had all the facilities you needed minus coffee maker which would have been nice. Rooms could also benefit of having a paint as looking worn. The noise inside and outside the building (between rooms, floors, etc...) is a disaster. We couldn't sleep deeply. Elevators max 2 persons with suitcases pretty tight!! Our room was facing Plaza Galicia and it was very noisy until the early hours of the morning. You can hear a lot of street noise even from the 5th floor with the windows closed. Mosquitoes in the room! The room was tiny! we could barely fit two suitcases in the room - had to lift one over the bed. Rooms too small. Needed a kettle. Price increased at weekend but maybe there as is to be expected. No kettle, breakfast not great variety. It was a bit pricey for what it was but I think that prices were higher than normal at the time because it was their patron saint day and Galicia day. Could not get tv to work you could here other people in rooms beside you and above you. Room felt like storage room rather than hotel room. Cold, frosted windows, can't open windows, no natural light. The sink in the bathroom was clogged. The evening receptionist was a bit rude. Elevators are tiny - be prepared for only 1-2 adults at a time or only one person with luggage at a time. The bathrooms were nice but could have used extra hooks on the long wall for wet towels to dry. Limited closet space, though not a large problem. The shower. I still have no idea how it worked. Way too complicated. Better deals can be found, very very noisy.
