Pros: My hostess was very friendly and kind. I do not speak any Japanese so she made everything ok. She seems like a very lovely lady. The room was large for the price with a separate shower room toilet and washroom. I used the shared and booked the private bath every night. Great onsen water!
Cons: Everything was perfect, no criticisms.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very friendly and helpful. When they know I’m going to Gassho Village, they offered to drive me there which result in considerable time and energy saving. Also private bath is newly built, clean, and beautiful.

Pros: Clean room and close with convince store .
Cons: Small bath room
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The service is very good. It feels like at home.
Cons: The room is a bit too small, but can be understood as this is the normal case in Japan.

Pros: kind host, free (if booked by booking.com she said) private onsen which had great temperature, reasonable price, near convenience store, and available smoking room.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice friendly staff, go out of their way to help you enjoy your stay
Cons: Credit cards are accepted, so be prepared. They don't have a restaurant in the hotel so don't arrived late or the local restaurants will close on you.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The host were very nice. The private onsen is as well fabulous. But maybe our room was near to the road side. Thus we couldn’t sleep the whole night due to the sound of the traffic

9.3 Excellent
Pros: the gentleman at reception speaks perfect english. The rest staff are very kind and warm-hearted. their breakfast is great! price is a litte bit high and it worths.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are all very friendly and thoughtful. Their warm smile has added much value to our stay. The gentleman receiving us speaks good English so there is no obstacle in communication. The onsen hotel is nicely decorated. Compared to other large hotels in the neighborhood, this relatively small one has successfully created a tranquil environment, making it a good place for rejuvenation. It will definitely be our choice if we pay visit to Gero again.
Cons: There is a bit of walk to the outdoor onsen so it will be quite cold in snowing season. But it is offset by the many good points of the hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is arguably the best accommodation we’ve had in our trip. Much more personalized than the other five stars hotel we’ve stayed in. Go with the room with private onsen, it is worth every penny!
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: comfortable room condition, nice and cozy onsen, very nice service.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor spa is excellent. The beddings are very comfortable. The staff are nice and sincere. Good for family stay.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: excellent food and was the best compared my others 9+ ranking Onsen hotel during the trip
Cons: none
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Room was very comfortable and had all the amenities one could ask for. In particular the room heating was very effective compared to other ryokans we've stayed in (for winter), and the separate kitchenette (drinks preparation area) with free mini bar was a nice touch. Service was excellent all round, food quality and variety was outstanding as well. Location was a mix - its a bit away from the main town center and train station, which has pluses and minuses. Need to use the hotel shuttle for transport (and they are always ready to do so) but quiet location away from any crowds. On the major plus side, the ryokan is just across the road from the Gero Gassho village which is a nice place to visit. Have done many ryokan stays across Japan and this is definitely near the top of the "best stay" list.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel staff was super helpful, our train got cancelled on us because of the heavy rain, we called the hotel and they were able to book us on the bus shuttle. Thank you!
Cons: A bit lost if you don't speak Japanese, but that's everywhere in Japan.
7.5 Good
Cons: Check out time too early 10am
8.3 Excellent
Pros: onsen in room, great service, good food.
Cons: A bit higher price
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Good services from staffs
Cons: Small property
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Before Trip: The staff proactively contacted us ahead of time to arrange for station-to-hotel transportation. As both my partner and I do not speak Japanese, prior arrangements in English is very helpful. They have also helped us book a local ceramic class the next morning for experience. During the Stay: The location is slightly far away from the station, but I would say the area was quiet and beautiful. Even though we missed a train and arrived to the station 2 hours later than initial estimated time and supposedly missed the comprehensive dinner serving time, they were still able to arrange transportation and meal for us. Their staff is truly accommodating and welcoming. Meal: The comprehensive dinner and breakfast were above standard. I would definitely recommend every to get the package with meals included Onsen: I have only used the public outdoor onsen. Although it was not as huge I would imagine, but it is still good for it size, clean and cozy. Pricing: Although this place is relatively more expensive than other onsen Japanese style hotels. I think the price paid is very much worth it.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service, delicious breakfast and dinner
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Right next to Gassho Cillage about 3 mins walk. And close to the river. The room was so great and dinner was delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very efficient and welcoming despite the language difficulties. The room is quite spacious and the hot springs are clean and roomy. The outdoor hot spring was quite enjoyable. The dinner was unexpectedly delicious although we ended up having too much to eat!
Cons: There is only one shuttle bus every hour or so and we had to wait at the stay to get picked up an hour later. Wouldn be good if the hotel can advise better before turbulence trip.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese room
Cons: Bigger onsen
9.3 Excellent
Pros: They're a bit far from Gero station, around 1 km away. The owners recommended us to contact them via tourist information to pick us up. Also help us carried 2 big luggages up to 2nd floor (they don't have elevator.) The Onsen separates Male and Female, opens 16:00-09:00 on the next morning. Onsen itself quite good, nice temperature, having both indoor and outdoor.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everthing is perfect. Hosts are really nice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were all very friendly and eager to help with everything you might need. The room is huge for two people and the futons were extremely comfortable. You also geta yukata to walk around the property, which we found very convenient. The onsen was small but very cozy. I went there twice and I was all alone the whole time, so I could relax by myself. The traditional Japanese breakfast was tasty and plentiful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: They were so very kind and hospitable. I had a great time with my family there. The hot spring outside/inside was tiny but very cute. You can take a bath after midnight(apparently most Ryokan close their spa at midnight).
Cons: The rest room smelled a bit from time to time. It was a little cold but they brought us an extra heater so it was fine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The onsen is so beautiful. We were able to do family onsen which makes it so much more enjoyable. The dinner and breakfast were in private rooms. It feel I can enjoy the dinning so much better. The food was excellent. I also loved the traditional room. We had the sleeping area plus a living room. The property is so pretty, and I also enjoyed the message recliner. I would highly recommend this place.
Cons: I loved everything. They also will pick you up and drop you off at the station.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location is a bit far from the Station, but that was a good excuse for a healthy walk through the city. (the hotel can arrange transport on request though) The staff were exceptionally friendly. Breakfast was delicious. The hot spring bath was also great. (they have both inside and outside bath)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Bedding provided is comfy. Nice onsen with outdoor pool. Limit parking space. Downside is there is no lift as room are on 2nd floor. Staff assisted in moving the luggages when check in and check out.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very cozy hotel suits for couple travel, 老板娘 is very nice to help us book bus tickets. Will choose this hotel again!!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The onsen of course! They gave me a coupon for a local onsen and I had also used their in door onsen. The onsen water in Gero is very good. The breakfast is excellent quality, wish I can have more gohan. :D The next day when I checked out it was snowing heavily, the lady owner is kind enough to give me a ride to the train station. Arigato!! I had a great time in such an authentic ryokan.
Cons: The room is too big for a solo traveller lol... hallway is a bit cold without the heater, guess the heating bill for such big ryokan is expensive.

7.5 Good
Pros: Room is good and breakfast is superb
3.0 Mediocre
Cons: No service for serving dinner at all, old bldg, private Onsen room just provide a small bathtub for onsen water, and did not tell us the checkout time is 10am, as we assume is 11am, same as other onsen hotels, then the staff say he need to overwork as we leave at 10.40am. Bad experience. Not recommended!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Met the hotel staff Ben, who is originally from HK. He's been very helpful during our stay ! Everything is great about the hotel. Nothing to complain ! Value for money too !

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Fine breadfast and location is near the JR station. Staffs are very nice.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese inn.Breakfast and dinner were very good. Great onsen especially the outdoor pool. Short walk from train station.
Cons: No view from room.
9.5 Excellent
Cons: The floor mattress was a bit thin making sleep not the most comfortable, but I know that’s very traditional!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was very convenient to the station and not far to the main street where you can experience foot onsens, but be warned, they are of different temperatures so test the water first. They are a great experience and make your tied feet feel good again. The ryokan was a bit tired but we had a good size room and clean. The onsen looked good even though, due to some problem it was closed the night we were there.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location of Mutsumikan is very close to Gero Station, and it is also near the famous bridge and within walking distance to many restaurant in town. Onsen bath in ryokan is also good, the quality of onsen is really great. Dinner and breakfast is also delicious. Hida beef suki is served for dinner, which is good.
Cons: After onsen bath, it should have been better to have some iced water in the room :-)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: It is a really nice ryokan, you can feel the traditional Japanese vibe. The room is large, the futon is very confortable. The onsen is great. this ryokan is relaxing. And the breakfast was delicious.
Cons: -
7.0 Good
Pros: Very close to the train station, just on the other side of the train tracks from the station. The staff were friendly and kind. Breakfast was nice, and I would recommend getting it. Room was fairly large with plenty of storage space. I liked having the dinner served in my room (as I was a solo traveler) and they were very prompt. Nice, quiet, small indoor and outdoor onsen. Overall, a smaller quiet place to stay.
Cons: Building was a bit run down, with well-worn carpets in the hallways and a smoky seating area in the lobby. I visited the other hotels in the town to try their onsens (using the tegata). Even though all the hotels in town have a dated 1980's feel to them, the bigger ones seem to be in better condition and have larger onsens. The dinner food was just OK, not super great tbh. I've had better, less expensive ryokan dinners. I'd probably choose one of the other ryokans/hotels if I were to go back.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: i like the open air bath, food and staffs

Pros: The landlady and the gentleman who picked us up are super nice and friendly. The hotel is not too big, but facilities are so far so good. Meals prepared by hotel are good and delicious.
Cons: 1) in room dining must follow their schedule, not flexible 2) the Chinese guy at reception was showing less patience to my fiends’s requests 3) if all staffs can improve their English, for better communication or understanding
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The place is charming , the hot spring was great and the foods are delicious. The staff were very friendly especially Ms.Lucy whom was looking after us during the stay, she brought her own shoe fixing gel from home when she heard my shoes were broken. Cons: Apart from hot spring and dining, a small shop, there is no other facilities. However, it is more than enough in an onsen.

The food for both Dinner and Breakfast was beautifully presented and tasted so good. The location of the hotel is within 10 minute walk to the centre of town.

Pros: Staff are very nice and friendly, they can speak very good English
Cons: Rush to finish either dinner or breakfast ( need to get up half an hour before for bed making and breakfast preparation in the room ) Cannot enjoy the meals slowly, maid keeps reminding us to finish our food as fast as we can Onsen should be relaxing but feel a bit disappointed Can hear next door's talking especially kids' laughing and yelling

3.8 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Just perfect on everything
7.0 Good
Pros: The room was spacious and provided a good tea making set. We also had a private shower and soaking bath. The communal bathing facilities and outside onsen were picturesque and it was good to soak in a genuine artesian water. Communal nude showering to get clean and onsen soaking for relaxation is normal in this setting. The lobby lounge was comfortable with pretty views of the garden and surrounding mountains. The evening breeze from the mountains smelt piney and delicious.
Cons: This property seemed to be geared to asian travellers and did not give the usual warm welcome or helpful support we had experienced elsewhere from our hosts in Japan. The Yukata provided were worn and frayed and I did not feel comfortable to wear them around the hotel. Our room faced a car park (not all rooms have good views). As a westerner, be prepared to be regarded (very subtly of course) as "dirty" no matter how much you scrub yourself in the communal shower room.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The room is so cozy with good view
Cons: We have knees problems when we go to the onsen , it is not convenient to climb down and up stairs.
7.0 Good
Pros: Nothing
Cons: The service in the restaurant is not up to the standard, the lady is not that nice and push us to leave the restaurant not in a good manner. Food is not that tasty! The hotel is quite old, the toilet in the room is smelly. I will never go back.....overall experience is not enjoyable!
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: I didn’t like anything about this Onsen hotel at all!
Cons: For the price I paid, this Onsen looks like a scene in horror movie. My expectation was the hotel is aged but well maintained, but this is not the case. Staff are not friendly. Food is way below average. The Hida beef dinner was only 4 pieces of thin layer half the size of my thumb. Bathroom is dark and smelly. The tatami room smells like rotten veggies. My son got bug bites all over his arms and lower legs after sitting on the tatami. The public Onsen bath is not clean, it runs 24/7. Mold along the window inside my room. This hotel might have been a fancy hotel 60 years ago when Gero was one of the best in Japan hot spring. But neither the building nor services are well maintained. I paid the same price for a much nicer Onsen hotel in Fukui. Not only a nicer place, but the food and staff are also higher quality. Considering both Gero and Fukui are 2.5 hrs driving from Nagoya, Fukui is a much wiser choice.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Staff, food were great. We had an excellent experience.
6.8 Good
Pros: The onsen is not to crowded and spacious
Cons: Old room, staff don't really communicate with each other well. (that how we feel). Didn't set up our room for the night, call to arrange when we are back... They say will do it at 8pm but not done! Have to call again and rearrange.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Is an excellent place to stay . great service great food .
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The traditional onsen that the hotel has was really nice. Service was good.
Cons: Too thin mattresses on the tatami. The room was clean but really old and you could see that from the walls and the tatami.

Pros: The Ryokan has an unique atmosphere because of it's traditional design and pleasant ambient smell. The food was really good, there were many types of onsen to enjoy (outdoor, indoor, for family, in the room) and the staff was very friendly.
Cons: To be honest, I expected the room onsen to look a little prettier, but I could really enjoy it either way. It was nice that it was next to a very big window which could fully open to feel more like outdoor onsen and I was pleased to see the night sky and some stars while enjoying the room onsen.

Pros: Just opposite to the Gero station and it's a HUGE onsen hotel even with an arcade area. The day I left it was raining, surprisely the hotel arranged the free shuttle service! Japanese-style room is very spacious with a balcony facing nice garden view, tatami and futon are very comfortable. There're 3 big shared onsen, one is outside, it was so relaxing that it's a pity I just stayed for one night.
Cons: none.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We arrived late after a very long train journey and waiting for a taxi in the rain. The staff couldn’t have been nicer about it and showed us around the lovely amenities. The hot spring was smart and stylish. The room had a stunning view of Gero. In the morning all the taxis were booked up so one of the staff members gave us a ride to the station! A huge thank you to everyone at the Hidasanso.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Not too far from the station but hard to walk if you bring the big luggages. Room is good. Staff are very nice.
Cons: No bus service from station to hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is my second visit and there will be next.
Cons: The uphill walking but that also makes it tranquil.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: everything was perfect! loved it
Cons: nothing bad
9.5 Excellent
Pros: We stayed in an atmospheric Japanese style room with an almost unobstructed view of the town below and the surrounding mountains. The bath downstairs was perfect. The staff was very polite just as you would expect in Japan. Great value for money.
Cons: The hotel is located some ways up a hill so getting luggage up there might be tough without using a taxi.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great view. The whole town can be seen from the room. Very helpful staff as well.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Staff can't speak English but go out of their way to be helpful with Google translate! They refunded our taxi ride to the hotel and let us take their umbrellas out in the rain. They also let us keep our bags in a locked room after checking out, while we vised Takayama for the day. The onsen was small but very enjoyable and refreshing.
Cons: Up the hill, so if you have mobility issues, this is not the place for you.
6.3 Good
Pros: It is convenient location where is nearby town and old onsen shrine. It is located on hill and an quiet place. Who travel with big luggage and without self drive must be problem. When arrive the lobby you do need to walk staircase. We love the breakfast presentation and food portion are fine.
Cons: The onsen water is too hot and small. provide the common hair dryer is not powerful. The room is full of furniture and tight space for three persons to stay.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: everything. friendly.smile.location... comfortable bed and lights good English at reception
Cons: bath is far from the room and.lots of stairs. cold in winter.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The Koyokan ryokan is sister hotel with two other places with hot springs and the front desk managers will be able to take you to whichever you like if you also want to enjoy hot spring elsewhere. Although a bit old, the room was spacious and clean and the futon was comfortable. The tea they provide in the room was good.
Cons: There were some audible noises and music playing late at night. Access to the lights are on the outside wall of our room next to the entrance.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is a ryokan with a lot of charm. I enjoyed the futon bed and the clean tatami. The room was rather cold but the bedding really warm, I slept very well. The outdoor spa (rotenburo) was simply fantastic.
Cons: The walls of the rooms need to be refreshed. The hotel could have their own place where to smoke (you need to walk to the next hotel, 30 m way, very close but awkward).
