Dating back to the 1820s, the space was once a private residence, ultimately becoming an inn in the early 1980s. It reopened as The Sailmaker's House in 2017, fully refurnished and remodeled. The Sailmaker's House unique blend of tradition and modern showcases the New England spirit, offering guests a true feel of Portsmouth and its surrounding areas, from its incredible hospitality to its striking design. The hotel features many of the original building's design elements, including its windows, slanted pine floors and narrow staircases, typical of the 18th century. The guest rooms are a far cry from those of the era, however, featuring everything from premium linens and toiletries to flat-screen HDTVs, WiFi, Bluetooth clock radios with charging stations and in-room climate control.
The Sailmaker's House features 10 guest rooms, each featuring sumptuous king-sized, pillow-top mattresses outfitted with Matouk® linens, plush down pillows and comforters. En suite, bathrooms are newly-remodeled, appointed with EO and Malin & Goetz® toiletries; walk-in tile showers and marble floors make every bathroom feel even more luxurious. All rooms include windows that let in ample natural lighting; select rooms feature views of the hotel's perennia gardens. One of the rooms even features a full bathtub, a private living rooms and a pull-out couch to accomodate four guests.
