Overview Reviews

8.8 Excellent
Pros: It's a traditional Japanese hotel that you feel like travelling back in time. Peaceful area with a nice temple view. Room is big and comfortable, with traditional tatami to sleep on. They serve special vegetarian meal which is better than expectation. Great experience overall.
Cons: It's not easy to get access to the hotel if you don't drive, even the taxi driver was not familiar with the location.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location, serenity and experience was amazing! Whilst taking an effort to get to there - via JR Rail, 20 mins on local yellow bus (¥ 200) and pick up from temple car park by hosts - you will find yourself in another time and place. The dinner and breakfast are beautifully presented and set in a private dining room overlooking the forest. Meals are vegetarian temple cuisine, based on many varieties and styles of tofu, so whilst unfamiliar to most westerners, it is unique dining. Koyokan Ryokan and the welcoming 3 generational family is an authentic experience that all international travellers could wish for when they visit Japan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kouyoukan is.a beautifully renovated and maintained guesthouse on the grounds of Kiyomizadera Temple, one of the 33 temples of the Chūgoku Pilgrimage. The family who operate this guesthouse have much to be proud of - the food served here is the equal of any vegan restaurant anywhere, in terms of taste, sophistication, and presentation. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, the ofuro provides a great wash and soak, and the Internet works perfectly. This is a wonderful place to stay, offering traditional Japanese guesthouse experience in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended!
Cons: Everything was excellent!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Marvelous food, wonderful people, serene setting in a temple complex with ancient cedars
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My main concern was just getting here, but it was stress-free! From Yasugi Station, we got a taxi and the driver knew about Koyokan. When we got to the temple parking lot, he called them on his cell phone and even waited with us until the free shuttle arrived. The drive up the small mountain road was crazy, full of twists and turns! It was dark out already, so it felt like an adventure roller coaster. The room was HUGE, with a window/view sitting area and two living areas of which one was already set up with bedding. We were the only people staying, so we had a private bath time (my boyfriend proposed! I said yes!) and then went to sleep. When we woke up the next morning... WOW. The view out the window was just spectacular. Fall foliage in full blast, walkway up to the property entrance covered in yellow gingko leaves, maples bright red. We sat there looking outside with our jaws to the floor for quite a while. We didn't think it could get any better until the traditional Zen breakfast. It was the best traditional Japanese meal we had during our 2 weeks in the country! Everything was meticulously prepared and beautiful. It's not like Western vegetarian, fish apparently doesn't count, so there was grilled salmon and it was amazing. So many creative small dishes - we were happily stuffed. Also the private breakfast sitting room had a beautiful view of the temple pagoda and fall foliage, just like our room's window. Payment by credit card took a few minutes, but it was an appreciated option! We can't wait to go back someday.
Cons: It is a perfect place.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic Ryokan with an incredible view to a beautiful garden with the 3 story wooden pagoda that lights up at night - all that from the room and futons. On these futons I've had one of the best sleeps ever, so cozy and comfortable. The dinner and breakfast were nice to experience as well. I only wish I had stayed for one night more (or two) This is not a minus but the property is a bit far from the Yasugi train station. But the people at the information desk at the train station will know about this place and guide you to the local yellow bus (200¥) that will take you to the Kiyomizudera temple parking lot. From there the staff will pick you up and take you to the heaven. Enjoy! PS if you come early to the station rent a bike at the info desk for 500¥ and explore Yasugi and around, it is very nice and calming experience.
Cons: Maybe some dated facilities like toilet but it is a ryokan so it is hard to judge.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place to stay and experience, most welcoming and arrival advice was excellent. Evening meal and breakfast were visually and taste amazing as well as flavor challenging. Location was very restful and was the room. Lovely team to make your staff a great experience

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Cocoreto, heart lake retreats, is a cozy guesthouse, nice bunk beds, clean bathrooms/restrooms where is approximately 900 meters from Yushien gardan. It's superb to be here, the excellent place for set ur mind free from the busiest city. I arrived this guesthouse on the late night..after the check-in period but their lovely staff still waited for me. The owner & their staff gave me the very helpful informations (yeah...in english). With their help I could roam around Matsue city & Izumoshi without worrisome.  The owner showed me (& his guests) the stars over the lake that is surrounded by the mountains, Eshima Ohashi Bridge (江島大橋), Ebisu shrine, Yumihama beach. The weather in the morning was so fresh too
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Mackey, the host, is absolutely wonderful. His English is exelent. He has lived abroad and you can ask him all the questions about Japan you have accumulated during your journey. He was a wounderful host, who took great care of me, even showed me arround. The hostel is a bit remote, but there are buses from Matsue station every hour and it is only a short walk from Yuushien garden. If you are lucky you can also see beautiful Daison Vulcano close by. The hostel itself is new, spotless and very cosy. Bus timetable from Matsue station to the hostel: 1. Shuttle Bus (Direct to the island, takes 16 min.) (JR Matsue St.) (Yuushien Garden) 10:40 ------------> 11:05 12:05 ------------> 12:30 14:20 ------------> 14:45 2. Regular Local Bus (takes 45 to 52min.) 10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great views all around the guesthouse, with extremely friendly staff! Matsumoto-san was a very hospitable host, and recommended lots of places to explore and visit in Matsue and Izumo. Comfy beds with an awesome outdoor deck to look at stars and chill! :)
Cons: Do check the bus schedules from Matsue to the island - bus services end early on most days
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse is surrounded with the fields. You must love and enjoy the stay at guesthouse if you like natural environment. The toilet and bathroom are superior clean. The dorm bed is chic and well equipped with socket power and lamp. The bed, bed sheet and blanket are extraordinary clean without dust and dirt. The living room is well decorated and comfortable with warm style. There is open kitchen with well equipped kitchen ware. The host is nice and excellent. And he treats all guests like super VIP with all rounded services of providing extra warmer machine at night in winter; pick up services if you missed the last bus schedule and etc. This was the most beautiful guesthouse I ever experienced in travelling. Undoubtably i will stay again next time travelling in Matsue.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a lovely 3 night stay at Cocoreto! It was a great location on a small island with great views from the mixed dorm. The owner was so friendly and helpful, the whole stay felt really homely and peaceful. The hostel was beautifully designed, very clean and had a great shared space so we could meet other guests. You can also rent bikes and the nearby town, Matsue, is very nice with lots to see and do. We would love to stay again!
Cons: There aren't many restaurants nearby but there is a large supermarket a few minutes walk away and the hostel kitchen is well equipped.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: What a beautiful and relaxing place to stay. The guesthouse is a little far away from Matsue centre but it so calm and beautiful, I really recoment staying there. The bus connection is regular enough to not be a inconvenience. The Island is small enough to walk around and to enjoy the scenery. Thank you to the owner Mackey for making it a great stay. He provided all necessary information and even organised a small tripp to nearby Kaikeonsen, which was amazing. Thank you so much.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved staying at Cocoreto, it's such a special place: the hostel itself is very cosy, the area very rural, tranquil, and peaceful and yet easily connected by bus to Matsue and Sakaiminato (perfect place to stay to get to the ferry). And the owner Mackey is a wonderful person too. Thanks for the insightful conversations we had. I'll definitely come to stay again and explore more of the area. P.s. the Yuushien garden 8 mins walk from the hostel is excellent!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything about my stay at Cocoreto. The host Mackey is so nice and went above and beyond to help me. He answered all my questions and even showed me around the town. The guesthouse is so comfortable and the beds give you lots of privacy. It is very well designed. The area is nice too, very quiet and peaceful. I rented a bicycle and cycled around the island. The famous gardens are a few minutes away as well. I highly recommend this guesthouse!

Pros: spacious room, hot bath at 12th floor was great
Cons: smell of foot when we enter first room, we then change another room with only smell of wood then
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Public bath. Breakfast
Cons: Nil
7.0 Good
Pros: It was new enough.
Cons: They were playing at being an Onsen. Fake tatami in the hallways no slippers in the hallways. You had to wear socks or go barefoot. Kind of weird. Also, Sakaiminato is an odd spot on a peninsula, 45 minutes from the "main line". There's really nowhere to get any food except for a Lawson that's 5-10 minutes away. I spent three days there and I ate at Lawson for breakfast and dinner because the hotel restaurant sold out. It got old quick. I really wouldn't recommend it unless you have reasons to be in the Sakaiminato area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Japanese styled rooms. Very nice hot pool
7.5 Good
Pros: The hotel was otherwise very nice, perfect location right next to the JR station an the Mizuki Shigeru road. Great views all over, from the onsen as well, which itself is also good and includes a dry sauna and outdoor bath. Breakfast had very large variety, with some unique foods you don't elswhere due to closeness of the sea (fresh fish, crab, etc.).
Cons: So the unusual thing about this hotel is that all floors are covered with mats and you have to take your shoes off before even getting into the elevator. Now that in itself would be fine but as we had a stroller with us the wheels had to also be cleaned, the staff would help or do it for us but it still made getting in a bit tedious. The floors were also not vacuumed or swept in our room, I don't know if it's a matter of conserving the mats or if they think that taking shoes off immediately keeps all dirt away. Finally, the staff is very nice and tries hard but it's clear they're a bit inexperienced. When we checked in I asked for breakfasts to be added but they only added them for one night at first. Also when I asked for directions to a beach I got lead completely astray.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything, the hotel has everything you need and has kept its Japanese soul. Alot of other hotels, I visited felt more Western or suffered on quality. Rooftop Onsen was amazing, and all little extra (free ramen, free PJs) were awesome given the low price of a room with breakfast. If in Sakaiminato, no need to look any further.
Cons: Nothing, this hotel is amazing!

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic value, wonderful staff. Spacious, clean tatami rooms. Onsen was clean - went twice!
Cons: For those who didn’t know: you will sleep on a thin Japanese style futon. This was mitigated by the tatami though, I did get a good night’s sleep. Also - be aware that you must ride a bus to this onsen resort area from Yonago Station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is very nice. I love that time all I stay at that hotel. and all staff is very kind and sensitive. I think, I recommend this hotel everyone which I ask hotel this area.

Pros: The breakfast was amazing! This is Japanese Kitchen at the best! We loved the massage chair in the room! The onsen was a dream! Just one minute walk to the beach from the hotel!

Pros: Although the staff can speak little English ,they go Beyond to accommodate our needs. We ate our breakfast and dinner in a private room. Food was excellent. The onsen was great too. Four of us enjoyed our stay there.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The dinner and breakfast is so great, and I think I would come here again. The staff is very nice, and they tried their best to teach us how to wear the kimono although we could not understand each other's language.
Cons: There is no elevator inside the building and I carried a very heavy luggage this time, so it's a little hard for me to move this luggage to the room on the second floor. And the staff English is not good. When we wanted to add some dishes during the dinner, they could not understand.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very good service from the staff even though their knowledge of English was very limited. Room was large and looked recently renovated.
Cons: Pillow was a bit hard.

4.2 Okay
Cons: The hotel is absolutely old and nil refurbishment, lack of vitality, remote location. We felt disappointed. Whereas breakfast is not bad.
7.9 Good
Pros: Clean room.
Cons: Large bathing facility is required.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was a mix of Japanese and Western style, however the Western fare was much better than most Japanese hotels. The dining room overlooks the Japan sea. The entire hotel has a sort of nautical theme which works well, as the hotel itself looks like a control tower of a ship. The staff is very friendly and professional and the rooms are clean and spacious.
Cons: We were slightly worried before entering as the exterior looks a bit old, but as soon as we entered the lobby the interior is quite nice and the rooms themselves look good as well.
