Heredia, Costa Rica the Catalina Hotel is a great place to visit, I was there last August and I came with my family and we spend a great time the kids were very entertaining with all the activities available at the place, we enjoy so much the visit to the Poas volcano that is very close from the hotel, also we spend most of the time in the hotel due to there were activities to do at the hotel as well, we play tennis, table tennis and for the smaller kids theres a playground and swimming pool, I think that is very good for the bird watching lovers, we waked up very early to walk around the gardens and there were many species of birds feeding themselves of the blooming plants, we stayed one week and it was great we eat very good, in the nights you can enjoy the heated swimming pool or just take a cocktail next to the fireplace we really appreciated to the whole Catalinas staff for their attention, they were outstanding.
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel La Catalina for the first few days of our honeymoon, left and went to a couple of other cities, and then came back for our last night in Costa Rica. Upon arrival at the La Catalina, we were greeted with smiling faces, kind words, and open arms. We were immediately taken to our top floor room with an incredible view of the whole city. Entering the room, an overwhelming sense of calm came over the both of us. The warmth of the ambiance was undeniable. The following day, the staff arranged for a driver and we took a private tour of the city, being sure to stop at the open markets, old train station, and of course a casino! The driver knew so much about the Costa Rican culture and was eager to answer any questions we had. He dropped us off at the Hotel in time for us to experience the cuisine the hotel has to offer. The beef carpaccio quickly became our ?usual? appetizer and the service in the Restaurant was as impeccable as the food tasted. After moving on to two other seemingly comparable hotels within Costa Rica, my husband and I quickly found ourselves discussing the little details other establishments failed to recognize that the Hotel La Catalina had nailed. We absolutely fell in love with the staff at the Catalina and the accommodations. We felt like we were in our own secret hideaway and it was the perfect place to start, and then end, our honeymoon.
We are a couple who were first time guests at La Catalina Hotel. The hotel is set on 5 acres of gardens with scattered buildings housing 3-6 apartments each. Some rooms are newly remodeled, but we found the older rooms had more charm. The main building has a cafe and bar with a long porch overlooking the lights of San Jose in the valley below. We sat on the porch at night drinking frozen marguaritas and enjoying the view. In the morning we strolled the grounds before taking a day trip. The hotel has the feel of a 5-star resort that hasn't quite been maintained to 5-star standards. We rented a car and had difficulty finding the hotel from the airport until we realized we could enter the hotel name into our iPhone map app and it took us right there. The car rental company was out of GPS devices. Without a GPS map device we would have been lost during our trip. Hotel staff was outstanding--very friendly and accommodating. We love this hotel. It has tons of character.
what a find! 20 minute cab ride from the airport(which they arranged for us, $* us. for three). An hour after getting off the plane ,we were through immigration, in a haven above San Jose on wonderfully landscaped, quiet and friendly oasis. Just what we needed after the getting ready to travel, 3am wake-up time for departure, hustle of the airports and flights...we were able to spend the afternoon and evening relaxing, soaking in the warmth, hanging out by the pool, having a nice dinner and being ready to take off well rested the next morning for our adventures! Our 'room' was a two story apartment, king bed on the upper floor with bath and balcony, lower level was a living area (sleep sofa) and a mini kitchen. both levels with fabulous views of San Jose/central valley, the view was most impressive at night. Very clean and very comfortable. The front desk staff was wonderful, bilingual ( unfortunately I am not), they spent lots of time on the phone helping me coordinate some of the arrangements I had made for our trip. Can I say anything else about how wonderful this place was? I thought of one thing, even if you want to explore San Jose as part of your vacation, stay here, come home to this at night, makes the city that much more interesting. I love costa rica.
This hotel is perfect, nice rooms, amazing views, great food, Friendly staff, close to many tours, we went to the Poas Volcano and La Paz waterfalls and front desk help us booking our tours and also the car rental. i will be back for sure.
La Catalina is a hidden gem that allows you to get rid of any stress. The 6 acres of rolling grounds with 2 pools and hot tub give you a place to find what ever you are looking for. There are coffee plantations and plantation groves in the area. The staff are great, and the meals were good. This is a place I would go again.
La Catalina Hotel and Suites Costa Rica is situated in the mountain area, on 6 acres of lush, green, tropical land, with coffee and banana plantations on either side. There are many outbuildings for your privacy and seclusion, two pools, a hot tub, tennis court, spa and much more. From the veranda of the stately main building you look out over the San Jose Valley with miles of lush green vegetation and breathtaking vista. Inside you will find ornately hand carved pillars, book cases and handrails all done by local artisans of the time. This would be a great setting for weddings, private parties, or corporate retreats. La Catalina Hotel and Suites offers lots of activities too, canopy tours, horse back riding, ATV’s, zip lining, and so much more. The food was great; the party we attended was fun, and the people so warm and friendly. Both management and staff of La Catalina Hotel and Suites deserve acknowledgement and thanks for the courteous, helpful and warm reception we received from them. We can’t wait to go back to Costa Rica; and stay at La Catalina Hotel and Suites. We have already talked to friends about joining us on our next trip. Woo-hoo let the fun begin!
Felt very welcome and at home. Extremely clean and very friendly staff. Fantastic views of San Jose. Out of the hustle of bustle of the big city but close enough to be anywhere quickly. Great place to unwind and relax. Would go there again and again.
The complete Hotel is very poorly maintained , for example we paid extra for a room with a Jacuzzi, the Jacuzzi was not functional due to the tub not being able to hold water, many of the fixtures in the bathroom literally fell off the wall, the shower was inoperable, only the hand shower worked, all window blinds were broken falling off the wall, upon arrival the bottles of beer, coolers, etc. in the mini bar fridge were all frozen cracked as a result and leaking into the fridge. The staff replaced the fridge and new bottles for the mini bar however they turned the fridge to the max cold setting and if not for our intervention the same scenerio as above would have occured. The mattress cover sheet had a blood stain on it. On our second night the toilets in the Hotel were plugged, the wifi was intermittent. The Hotel decription warns that the one pool is clothing optional but what it fails to tell you is that a number of people will be walking from the pool through the hotel grounds in the nude. If I wanted that I would have booked into a nudist camp. On top of all that the clothing optional pool is the one directly beside the Hotel instead of being the one secluded away from the Hotel. I could go on but I am sure that everyone will get the jist of this review. The only positive comments that I can make regarding this Hotel is that the food and staff were excellent!! Also this Hotel is a number of miles from San Jose so if you use a Taxi or a driver then expect to pay aprox. 60 USD for the round trip.
We were given a cabana with a fantastic view for the price of a regular room. The service was wonderful and always with a smile. Admittedly, the buildings are a bit older than when the pics on their web site were taken, but they are in good condition. The only exception would be the gym facilities, which were in poor shape but we weren't there to workout anyway.
Its a nice hotel wth a wonderful view of the central valley of the city.If you wanna escape from the noise of the city ,this the place to stay.We had a nice stay with helpful staff. I enjoyed a lot in birds watching, the sunsets.I just wanted to let you what a amazing vacation cur family had.La catalina was a great place to stay.Ill love it....
Great time at the hotel. Modern, clean, easy to access from the airport. No complaints at all
The price for one night was amazing, and the location to the airport was really convenient. If I had a layover in San Jose - Alajuela I would definitely stay there again. Continental Breakfast was not included with the deal I got on Kayak.
Very close to the airport and a free shuttle every 1/2 hour. A good first or last night stay. 6-7 restaurants right across the parking lot.
El hotel es.bonito El servicio es pesimo
Very friendly staff at desk who took time to check me in when they could not find my reservation. Maybe issue with online company I booked through but they still honored my rate. Some issues with the hot water at sink and shower. Was either scalding hot or cold. Hard to tune. Not a deal breaker at all though
Location near the airport is its main advantage. Inside is peaceful, clean, modern, and comfortable. Front desk staff gave some great advice including that we return our rental car the night before our early-morning flight, and that the rental car shuttle would bring us back to the hotel. This was the best idea and greatly simplified our morning of departure. The hotel shuttle to the airport was quick and efficient. The pool is tiny, and tucked away in a back corner. The cafe/restaurant in the lobby is modern and inviting with a great looking menu, however, our waitress was the slowest on the planet. Every step took about 5 times longer than it should have. Even when we finally caught her eye (the place was 90 percent empty at the time), and indicated that we wanted the bill, she took another 10 minutes to finish sorting cutlery before coming over and putting us out of our misery. The food was good, but the service was terrible.
Close to airport, affordable, queen-sized beds, big enoigh for 4 adults Some of the staff wasn't the friendliest, but no one was rude. They were all informative. No complaints!
Location, close to the airport and has restaurants available for those arriving in the evening
Close to airport. Great front desk staff.
Everything about the hotel was just perfect. It was right down the street from airport and the shuttle takes you there every 30 minutes. I had family staying on another floor and the elevator only allows you to go to your floor. Good security but too good I guess
Wonderful place to stay! Staff was helpful, friendly and professional. Hotel was very clean, and the room met all of our expectations. Shuttle service to the airport was fantastic. The driver was friendly and helpful with our bags and such. Great place to stay!
Room was comfortable, little convenience mart was great, and free shuttle service to the airport was very helpful. Staff member checking me out in the morning was extremely rude, and did not treat me like a guest. She then proceeded to treat the male guest behind me with actual etiquette ~ not sure why it's that difficult to remain consistently polite.
Breakfast was good, the free airport shuttle was the kicker. A/C was a luxury, but too much of a good thing. Ended up in pants and a jacket during breakfast.
Friendly staff, clean, convenient for transition in or out of country. Five minutes from airport. Pay departure tax at Greyline. Across from casino. Little tough to get to if driving self. Exit off highway is odd. Exit left, then turn left and immediate right into holiday inn and continue to Hampton.
The hotel was convenient to the airport, with great staff and a good breakfast. The room was neat and tidy. However, the shower needed an update and shower head didn't work properly,
It was clean and comfortable. Convenient to the airport with shuttle. Nearby restaurants, too.
The swimming pool and lounge area. coffee in the lobby along with apples jets flying overhead - unavoidable result of being convenient to the airport
I liked the shuttle and the breakfast in the morning was pretty good. Room was comfortable and clean and front desk was helpful. Close to a casino and that was fun to do. We just stayed here to catch our early morning flight back to LA.
The location is excellent for those arriving or departing San Jose airport. I had rented a car from one of the rental car companies across the parking lot so it was very convenient to drop off the car and walk over to the hotel. I had hoped to pay my departure tax but didn't realize that it was only available until 4:00PM. One person at the desk told me he could do it later, but when I checked again at around 6:00PM I was told the system wouldn't allow it. There aren't a lot of options for food nearby.
Everything was very good. Friendly staff, good breakfast, good parking. Five nights and all went well. The traffic at the entry to the hotel is nightmare.
Came in on a late flight to San Jose and stopped off at the Holiday Inn Express for a night before jumping off into the Costa Rican countryside in the morning. For this purpose it did exactly what it needed to do. Shuttle bus that picked up at the airport was a plus. A little bit pricey for what you get but not acceptable for one night. The breakfast options were pretty basic but in their defense they were a typical Costa Rican style (gallo pinto, eggs, coffee, and some fresh fruits). Traffic at the intersection in front of the hotel can be horrific so keep that in mind if you will be driving. Also, keep an eye out for the shuttle bus that comes around outside of the arrivals area and stops close to the taxi stand. A "helpful" local showed me where to go then just happened to mention that he works on tips. I could have just waited on my own for it...
Bed was comfortable The room had a terrible smell. They said you could get wifi in the hotel, but it was really only in the lobby area. The traffic outside is very loud because of a crazy intersection and you can hear planes landing and taking off.
Overall, everything was great. Location is perfect for flying to the airport. Staff was very helpful and really wants to help you! Room was comfortable and clean. 24 hour shuttle was awesome! Great value for the money. For those who arrive at off hours there is a Denny's close by. Our only negative was the breakfast which was very processed (e.g. scrambled eggs were bland) and not enough variety for the cost of that hotel.
Top notch staff in the hotel and restaurant. The art is simply beautiful and the facilities are brand new and luxurious. I think they are setting the pace for luxury in the San Jose area. If you don't drive, which is absolutely frightening in San Jose, you will be limited on things to do around the hotel. But if it's for a couple nights or a meeting this place is very nice!
Decor and art work is very upscale, great price, exceptional clean and modern. The bathroom has glassware not paper or plastic cups, blow dryer and nice towels. The coffee for a hotel was phenomenal. The bed was extremely comfortable. Was very quiet, and TV had great chanel options for English speaking and sports. The breakfast was outstanding. No transferse available. I needed a transfer. No microwave or bath robe. But didn't need it anyway.
The whole hotel was very clean and staff were friendly. The restaurant was delicious for breakfast.
Amazing service, greeted us with fruit juice and snacks. Front desk was so helpful and kind. Will definitely stay here again.
Had Netflix on their tv's Helpful at front desk, but not polite for Costa Rican standards
The beds, work comfortable Major sewage problem, breakfast issues and staff unwilling to help with excursions or seeming to have a problem ordering takeout for guest!! I requested to speak with the wonder, no success.
I've stayed here 3-4 times so far. It's my go-to when I arrive Costa Rica and depart. The staff is very helpful, the rooms are very clean, I wanted to take the bed with me - very comfortable! I have only tried the New York Strip and tiramisu - both amazing. A great quiet little hotel. Very very strict on their 11 am check-out time.
The rate is perfect for quick business stops like mine. Toilet paper...every single time I stay here. Either its to low quality or to "eco friendly" for me if thats why is the way it is. Please change it!
Beautiful hotel Internet was extra
Carolina at the front desk was wonderful. Patient, helpful and pleasant. When we arrived our Kayak booking had not been arranged by Kayak. It took almost an hour on the phone to get things straightened out.
The ambiance! Tropical/lush greenery and colors. Beautiful pool. Excellent food. We were at the hotel just one night before a trip to the Panama Canal. Wish we could have stayed several days.
The staff was very helpful and extremely courteous. The layout and decor was top notch and the amenities are amazing. I can't say enough about this place. I'm definitely coming back.
Beautiful hotel with some real charm. Staff was first class. Gift shop and cafe are open 24hrs which is a great touch to grab a hot meal anytime. Views are wonderful. Restaurants were too expensive for the area. Since there is nothing within walking distance, and traffic is so bad in the afternoon, they have a captive audience - feels like they're taking advantage of it.
beautiful building and grounds actual room was a bit shabby, dirty. no fridge, tv didnt work, ac wouldnt turn off, even alarm clock didnt work, strange knocking sound coming from bathroom, and very loud in hall.
The hotel and amenities itself were great and so was most of the staff. We really enjoyed the pool, Antigua restaurant, views, driving range, fitness center and proximity to the airport. Though the majority of the staff were great, there were three incidents during our 5 night stay that really disappointed us. Two were in the executive lounge. I won't bore you with the gentleman who lied to us on Friday evening about the actual prices of the wine on their menu. Nice guy and I actually gave him a $10.00 cash tip and he turned around and charged us double than what he told us he would. On Sunday March, 29th, 2015 we showed up at the executive lounge around 5:20 (It supposedly opened for drinks and light food at 5:00). The young lady working in the lounge hadn't put any of the food out yet. No problem, we weren't there for the food, we wanted a glass of wine and perhaps a few crackers and cheese. She told us we would have to wait for a drink until she put all the food out. Again, no problem. There was another family in the lounge and no one else was in the joint. She served them drinks after we arrived and asked for drinks but was told we had to wait. Okay, still no problem, perhaps they arrived at 5:00 and she thought they had waited too long and wanted to make it up to them. We sat there for 20-25 minutes while this lady and one helper slowly put the food out. During this time, several people arrived and were waiting for service as well. I assumed that when she was ready to start serving drinks, she would take ours first as we had been there the longest without being served. Nope, she started serving tables that just arrived while we were going on sitting in this small lounge for a half hour by now. I had to say something at this point and she just said, "I have many things on my mind". You would think at this point that she would come over to our table, apologize for the lengthy wait and take our order. Nope, she disappeared in the back room and 5 minutes later sends her helper to take our order. We ordered the large glasses of wine and he brought us over the small glasses (considerable price difference between the two) and then proceeds to charge us for the large ones. At this time I asked to speak with the hotel manager. Long story short, he came up, apologized and said the drinks were on him. Classy move by management but this young lady never once came over and apologized for her defensive, incompetent and lousy service. We actually stayed there for a while and she never once came over to our table. I would have fired this sniveling inept employee on the spot.... Later, we put our son on one of the hotel vans that compete with the local cab service out front to go back to the college he's currently attending in San Jose. I told the guy at the front desk to add the charge to our room which he gladly did. I saw him asking the van driver who works for the Marriott for an invoice and handed it to me. The charge was $35.00 and I knew that was accurate because that's the same amount we were charged when we took the same ride 2 days earlier. I found out last night that the driver charged my son on arrival the full fare again.
Clean and staff was very friendly. They charge for internet in the room but not by the pool. I think in the level of a hotel internet should be included in the room. Also should include at least a bottle of water or two in the room at no extra charge. They also need more staff at the breakfast buffet on the weekend, long line for the eggs and had to ask to have potato and bacon refilled.
Location was great. Just a few kilometers from Poas Volcano Park. Great view of San Jose and Allajela. Wind howls all night but youneed that to blow the clouds out. No
the views n/a
The good breakfast, beautiful view, friendly donkeys and dogs, helpful staff, warm room, hot shower, kid friendly yard full of gnomes and play houses, and proximity to the airport (45 minutes). Wifi was spotty and pretty much unusable, though it may have been the stormy weather.
Free airport shuttle 24/7
Upon traveling by bus all day to San Jose for my flight out the next morning, I get to the airport to call for my hotel shuttle... and am told there are no rooms for me, the hotel was overbooked. It's 8pm and I'm tired and hungry - the receptionist tells me to come to the hotel through their shuttle and they'll help me find another room. After waiting longer than she said it would take, the shuttle finally arrives and takes me to La Riviera. The lady at the front desk is nice and tells me that they've gotten me a room at comparable hotel right behind theirs. By the time I am finally shuttled over there and checked into my room it is nearly 10pm - too late for me to mess with any other arrangements for a room upon discovering that the room is NOT comparable in any way!! La Riviera looked nice with AC, flatscreen TV, a pool, free breakfast, style... my 'comparable' room, which was two dollars more even, was a hole-in-the-wall hotel down pretty much an alley. The room was a mess with multiple beds (one a bunk bed), AC or TV didn't work - it was a local family room - and no offense to that, but it was a room I'd NEVER pay $70 in Costa Rica for! I signed up to pay that amount for a nice, classy looking room in a hotel with gardens and ambiance! I felt taken advantage of and ripped off, and upon expressing this to the lady at the new hotel was met with nothing but the offer to find another room. Really?! It was too late and I was exhausted!! I wish either Kayak or La Riviera wouldn't have overbooked their rooms OR the lady would have been honest about the 'comparable' room so I could have found another at the airport before being shuttled to their nook in the huge city and essentially locked in at a late hour. This hotel looked super nice, it's a shame! I would never stay here though because of this experience.
Hotel Villa Dolce is in a convenient location. Rooms were clean and had everything I needed. Staff are all friendly and extremely helpful. The same can be said about the owner and his wife who live on the property. I loved my stay here and would recommend it. I definitely will be back!! Pura Vida Nothing
The hotel has a boutique feel to it but everything is also clean and in very good condition unlike some other rustic/boutique hotels I've stayed at. It's located on a hillside and has amazing views in all 4 directions. Great outdoor seating options and a nice pool. Also a lovely indoor lounge with fireplace and a quaint restaurant and bar. The rooms and bed were huge too, I was completely shocked at how nice it was for the minimal price I paid for a weeknight stay. The staff was also extremely friendly and helpful, even helped me print my boarding pass before checking out. Would definitely stay here again! Honestly can't think of anything I didn't like about this place.
