When you stay at Sukau Greenview Bed & Breakfast - Hostel in Kota Kinabatangan, you'll be steps from Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. The front desk is staffed during limited hours.
7.1 Good
Pros: Directly on the river, rooms are basic but what you would expect. Would recommend going for the package, we didn’t and paid separately for each cruise. It did although give us the opportunity to find alternatives for dinner at a place further along the river.
Cons: No wifi available, no alcohol available (anywhere close)... good for a 2 day detox!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very basic room but with all comfort like roof fan, Aircon and hot shower. Amazing calm surroundings and views to the river from the restaurant. Boat tours start directly from their own pier. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Dinner and breakfast basic but very tasty.
Cons: On my way back from the restaurant I slipped on a wet floor area which I did not suspect at any moment that it could be slippery (concrete) and fell badly cutting my foot (was wearing flip flops) and having bruises on my arms and face. Customers should be warned about this very slippery area.
7.0 Good
Pros: Nice, secluded, quiet place located right on the river. It's a great place to just relax and take in the views. They have nice tour packages for river cruises and nature walks. Everyone was nice and the food was plentiful. If you want other food to eat, there's a restaurant just a couple of kilometers away. I was surprised that there were no mosquitoes in my room. For being right in the midst of nature, I would have expected more bugs. Just a few ants (they gave me spray to get rid of them). Good AC, hot water, no WiFi.
Cons: Having a bicycle for guests to use would be nice.
Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort - Sukau
8.6 Excellent (128 reviews)
Overview Reviews
When you stay at Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort in Kota Kinabatangan, you'll be 9 minutes by foot from Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. A roundtrip airport shuttle is complimentary (available on request).
8.0 Excellent
Pros: This reserve is a fabulous location along the river. The staff are nearly all local and have great local knowledge. We were given a room overlooking the lake that we had requested on arrival BUT it was very hot and the air conditioning didn't work but we were moved to a much cooler room eventually. The food - the food includes local dishes and is cooked by locals. The temperature of the food is not important to locals, but when we explained that scrambled eggs were much nicer served warm they made an effort to do this. Overall the food was good -especially the local afternoon snacks The trips out on the boat were excellent - some trips you saw more wildlife than others, but it was always amazing to be out on the river
Cons: The walking trips around the lodge weren't really up to much. Do not do laundry for guests The did sell red wine but was undrinkable - would have loved to be able to buy wine with dinner (But they did sell cold beers which we really enjoyed)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff, great trips - especially seeing the orangutans, crocodiles & monkeys in the wild. The night time walk was really good too.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic experience, we were very, very lucky to see wild orangutans, large crocodiles, otters and lots of bird, on the river trips. The bungalows are very comfortable and ours was quite private. Guides and staff were great, staff hosted a little entertainment evening, dancing & limbo competition ! great fun. Food pretty average, but you are 'off the beaten track' ! Met some lovely people. Really enjoyed our stay.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good to explore the river and the jungle, main thing going there is for river cruises
Cons: Value for money - buffet food & accommodation is just ok
5.0 Okay
Pros: The boat tours were great and it was a very relaxing place to stay. It was incredibly clean and the staff were very friendly.
Cons: The price. It really wasn't worth the money I spent. There are far cheaper and better options available. The rooms and accommodation was really not worth the price. I have stayed in nicer homestays for a fraction of what it cost to stay here. You are also very stuck there and limited to the schedule they decide. If you decide to not get up at 5:30 because you are on holiday and tired from a days trekking. You will miss the 30 minute long breakfast at 7am..! 15 ringgit beers as well
6.0 Good
Pros: Accomodation is very nice, way nicer than we expected. Very clean and no insects, and good ac.
Cons: The vegetarian food is literally just carbohydrates. The only protein I got was eggs in the morning, even though I asked for vegetarian food in advance. And don't expect this to change, I was reading the old reviews and people have complained about the food and nothing has changed. The meat food was also bad, no taste. The river cruises are the same every day (so don't stay here for many days), but of course what you will see varies (sometimes basically nothing, maybe just the same maqacues that you also see by the resort, but some days if lucky, orangutans!). On one day, there were 11 boats on the same exact point at the river!! Seriously, would make so much more sense that the boats would leave in every 10 minutes or so, so then people might actually feel like they are not in a zoo.. The "jungle" walk is a walk in a secondary rainforest. And on the morning walk there is no animals to be seen. The resort is not in a jungle, it is right next to a small village and surrounded by secondary rainforest. We were disappointed, we thought that we would be in "real nature".
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The price incuded transport to the hotel and to the airport as well as jungle trakking and river cruise. Our guide was very helpfull and enthusiastic person. We had the opportunity to see many wild animals eg. hornbills, eagles, crocodiles, elethant, many types of monkey like Proboscis monkey, Long taile makkakis.
Cons: Many boats in the same time in the river no only from our hotel but also neighboring resorts. Despite this, he managed to see many wild animals, but I supossed we would see much more if there were less boats which were noisy.
5.8 Okay
Pros: This place is tricky to review because it is not your average hotel or resort experience (it’s more like a summer camp for adults) and accommodation is actually a small part of the experience. I’ve taken time to write this as I had wished I knew more before I booked. The accommodation is really impressive for the jungle. It’s well sealed from bugs with a decent bathroom, working air con and mosquito net. The food is a little hit and miss, but mostly was good and plentiful. One night there is enough time to do everything.
Cons: Most of what you are paying for is their itinerary of treks and river cruises. This is fixed and there is no alternative - I think this is the same everywhere on the river so where you stay is really important for how good an experience of the area you get. And this is where this place fails. Presuming you have come to experience and learn about local wildlife and nature, their boat trips and “treks” are capitalising on this rather than supporting it, and not offering much in return. Being in a boat on the river is nice, no doubt. But our guide was dreadful - he knew nothing about any animals and couldn’t spot them. We stopped 4 times to look at the same macaques you see all day at the accommodation, and the biggest insight he had was “they have long tails.” A big animal made a noise from in the jungle, he didn’t know what that was. He followed other boats rather than spotted the wildlife himself, which meant the animals you saw (crocodiles and monkeys) then had 5 loud boats cornering them which didn’t feel right. You also overheard other boat’s guides giving much better info to their customers during these moments so it’s clearly possible to get a better experience. The night trek and daytime jungle trek were a dull ramble through the grounds. If you see something you will be very lucky - they don’t provide any torches. What we saw (a frog and a moth on the night tour, nothing on the day tour) were pointed out by other tourists rather than our guide. You can’t predict nature and if animals aren’t there that is obviously no one’s fault, but with good guides you can at least learn something on the journey. These guides offered no information about anything. I wish I had paid a little more and gone to a tour guide / accommodation package with greener credentials and knowledgable guides. If you’re travelling to see what is left of the rainforest here, you probably want to do the same.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location overlooking the river, spacious room with ensuite. Food was lovely, good variety as well. Our tour guide Kabir was excellent and we spotted plenty of wildlife!
Cons: Maybe have a chalk board with the daily activities around the reception/restaurant area would be helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We did the 3d2n packages and it was wonderful. The chalets were lovely and clean and cozy and the location is perfect. We had a brilliant guide called Ben who did all our tours with us. He was very knowledgeable and he spotted so much wildlife for us and explained all about the animals in really excellent detail. He really looked us extremely well. The other staff were also very kind and really welcoming. It felt like a family. The food was very very good! I would highly recommend this accommodation!

7.0 Good
Pros: The whole complex is nice & the boardwalk to the cabins are in good condition The 4pm river tour was good. Our boat driver was full of information & spotted some little animals that we would not have seen.
Cons: We knew it was going to be a basic place to stay, so there was nothing that we didn't like because we weren't expecting anything special at all.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Whole place made from wood, nice cottages, beautiful garden and good bed. Very near to night market with good food options.
Cons: Just one electric socket and even that was not suitable for charging out phones.
6.7 Good
Pros: The accomodation is not expensive, so you should not expect a lot from it. The houses are nice, but not really clean. The staff is really nice and the packs they offer are perfect
Cons: They houses were not that clean and the food was good, but the same every time.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the setting the guys taking us out on the boat (John and Yan) were fantastic and very knowledgeable about the area. They made every effort to see all the wild life and I wasn't disappointed
8.0 Excellent
Pros: We decided to purchase the 3D2N package for 450 RM per person (accommodation, food and drinks, jungle walk, 4 river trips, transport in and out Sandakan). Saw a lot of animals including crocodille from up close Knowledgeable guide who were spotting animals for us Nice surrounding area
Cons: River trips seem a little overpriced (60 RM per one) Room and its equipment was dated, could use rennewal We didn't feel very welcome, they treated us as just another tourists
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I would definitely recommend to budget travellers! Excellent safaris. Good food. We paid around £80 for 3D2N trip
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Simple accommadation, worth the money. They arranged Kinabatangan river cruises for a reasonable price and our guides were really making an effort that we could see the wildlife. Food was good at the house restaurant.
6.0 Good
Pros: The redeeming quality of this property is that they offered a package with shuttle service to/from Sandakan, excursions (i.e. take a series of boat rides in the afternoon, evening, and sunrise (we saw wild orangutans!) to see wildlife and nature), dinner/breakfast, and an English-speaking tour guide. This made it really easy to arrive and not have to think about/plan the next 24 hours. We coordinated this package via email and the property is very responsive; great to work with! Dinner was good.
Cons: In all of the communication with the property, they never specified the stay + excursions needed to be paid in cash only. This was very inconvenient when we tried to pay. We had to hit an ATM on the way back into town. Manage your expectations about the accommodations. They are doing a good job for what they have at their disposal. They are in the middle of the jungle. The breakfast was not enjoyable.
7.0 Good
Pros: Location .Staff. Setting. Communication was 1st Class Local Village people were delightful. Wildlife. Walking
Cons: Breakfast and coffee and tea. Expensive bus transfer.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Food is outstanding

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very kind people and helpfull
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Accommodated our schedule for pickup and drop off
7.1 Good
Pros: Great location of the logde perfect to enjoy wildlife Cooking was really good Very good transfer included Easy and reactive communication with local staff
Cons: Guide intervention during cruises quite limited about wildlife Very expensive price per night considering the overall experience
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The attentive staff and the great location. We enjoyed being surrounded by the rainforest. And the lunch, dinner and breakfast was tasty!
Cons: Need stronger tea and coffee.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: They picked us up from Sandakan Hostel and brought us back to the airport always correctly on time. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Food was malaysian Style. We could not choose but were offered a little variety to share for the two of us. Food was tasty. Even got an afternoon snack and tea/coffe. Apart from us there were only two other couples at the lodge. So it was quiet and relaxing. Probosic Monkeys directly on the other side of the River Infront of the hotel. On the evening cruise we saw elephants which was definitely our highlight. It was a 45 min boat ride to the place where they were. At the Night Walk behind our lodge we saw traces from elephants so they are probably close to the lodge too.
Cons: Guides did not explain so much about the animals and wildlife. At the boat cruise there was a good English speaking guide who only mentioned a few facts about the elephants and pointed at the other animals. For the Night walk the guides English was acceptable but not good. Also we were really deep in the jungle without trails (which can be good or bad:-) ). Be aware of leaches and biting ants.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really nice lodge. Large comfortable rooms. The food was really good and the staff was very friendly. The river cruise that was part of our booking was amazing and we saw a lot of wildlife. Really nice lodge.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Cons: Here is my honest and transparent review. At first glance, on Arrival my bf and myself looked at each other and said this is not what we expected. That being said it is not a first class fancy resort. However, it did grow on us and we truly enjoyed our stay with pleasure. As per other comments, it could use some up keeping but this place is located so far from the city and completely isolated that I can see why they haven't been uptodate on renovations. The property is in the middle of the forest, it's peaceful and you will feel like your living the discovery channel. The food was good and we opted for all inclusive when we booked through which I highly recommend. Although it seems pricey you can't go wrong: three meals a day, round trip transportation (too and from) and 2 river cruises a day are included. What else is there to mention: the staff is kind and welcoming and there were absolutely no insects in the room. I should also add that we didn't even see mosquitoes during our 3 days and 2 night stay. I'm not sure if it was because we visited in February or if the area in general have no mosquitoes? All in all this place was magical but it's not for everyone that's for sure. We felt very safe through out our stay. We saw probiscus monkeys other types of monkeys, water monitors, alligators and one wild orangutan. Again, this place surprised us and we absolutely loved our stay.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Though it seems pricy at first, it's actually a good value when you consider that transportation, food, and activities are included. The guides are friendly, informative, and truly care about the very special place that they steward. We saw a variety of animals on the river cruise, including proboscis monkeys, silver langurs, civets, hornbills, kingfishers, crocodiles, and even an orangutan. The guides are eagle-eyed when it comes to spotting creatures and let you stare/take pictures for as long as you want. It was a magical experience.
Cons: The room was nice but had a strange smell.
7.0 Good
Pros: Nice secluded place, we got to see an elephant only a few meters from the lodge! The river cruise was great! Rooms were basic and food was ok but nothing to write home about.
Cons: We booked the 2D1N package and were a bit disappointed when we were told that the whole experience was actually less than 24 hrs! We were picked up at 11am on the first day and had to leave by 9am on the second day so I think this is incorrectly marketed - it is one day not two!! Due to this I think it was overpriced. Room was not very clean. The kettle had mold in and the showers were dirty.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The whole team at the lodge did everything to look after us, from meeting us in Sandakan and delivering us back to the airport at the end. Fantastic people and service. Seeing a herd of 60 elephants cross the river was amazing and you will never see this real wildlife behavior in a zoo or ‘wildlife farm’.
Cons: Loved it all!

Bilit Adventure Lodge - Kampung Bilit
8.4 Excellent (29 reviews)
Overview Reviews
When you stay at Bilit Adventure Lodge in Kota Kinabatangan, you'll be steps from Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.
7.5 Good
Pros: The food is great and the guides / staff were lovely given the situation. The location of the lodge is fantastic and we saw a lot of wildlife there.
Cons: Sadly we were impacted by the virus restrictions. Having paid a lot of money for 3 of us to stay and do activities for 2 nights, we paid about $80 each per night just to stay there, no refund or discount. We were offered a 10% discount for the next place, but when we got there they did not honour that. They were very keen to get rid of us and we were happy to leave on the first available flight. They could have handled the situation with a bit of genorosity since we will be coming back to Borneo when things improve, but wont be using these guys or their sister resort.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff and the location made this amazing. The trips along the river were awesome. You can book a 2 night package direct... no need to go through an agent.
Cons: Basic but clean accommodation. Most food was fried.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: - Simple and basic facility but perfect for jangle! - Staff are very friendly and helpful - Food was simple but very tasty! - I think the price is very very reasonable as it includes river cruse (early morning and late afternoon) and 2 hours walking. Plus staff are very good at spotting wild animals! We were so lucky to see monkeys, beautiful birds and crocodiles (big one and small one).
Cons: - Not that important, but would be great if the lodge could offer coffee and tea in the room (they have kettle in the room),
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We loved our stay here. It's a perfect place to relax in the tranquility of the jungle. The boat trips were great and we loved the night walk. You can rent wellies and leech socks which was a plus. The food was delicious and the staff all exceptionally friendly.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Superb location and LOVELY staff. Well clean room. Nice food.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff where very very good and helpfull they even made veggy meals for us , the location was exelent and it was very peacefull , the boat driver was very good and thoughtfull
Cons: Some cusions on the chairs ,just too hard for old folks , we did have one tour guid that stayed with us but others kept changing around
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing at all.
Cons: A complete fraud, never book this lodge! Room: very dirty, full of bugs with dust and lotion from previous guest underneath the bed. Very poor buffet, if you don t go first you re left with nothing to eat and the food is not even good. Dont think you ll get any privacy, we can hear all the talks and noise coming from the room in the cluster. Didnt sleep the whole night as we had drunk neighbours... Cruising along the river: always going to the same spot. Dont think you ll be alone... minimum 4 boats at the same time to look at a poor monkey. Management: when you tell them about the situation they almost laugh at you and dont offer any solution or any commercial gesture! Never seen something like this before Left a day earlier as it was awful; they made us waste a morning on purpose, making us wait for more than an hour in a van! Not talking to us or pretending not to understand, acting rude and being insulting. This resort is a proper shame, a complete lie and I will not recommend it to anyone!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location and activities
Cons: No fresh coffee. Room/building was due for some upgrading

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Staff and its Boss, Jason (a Malay Chinese Decendent from great Admiral Cheng He' s expeditions in late Song Dynasty) did the outmost to suit our experience ! We not only arrived late, due to underestimation of driving times compared to distance, but also on a flat tire the last 600 m. We missed the evening boat ride but were compensated by an early morning river excursion free of charge. We got met at the stairs and helped w our lugage (we are a family of 4). Then they fixed our tire. Not only that, my daugther lost her shoes and they managed to deliver them courtesy to Sepilok 120 km away. Food ? Probably the most delicious for a Jungle Lodge i ever experienced ! And i saw more than a few around the world (Africa, Asia, Brasil !). And the explanations given on the Rim Trek in nearly Oxford English. Very in depth and informative. A MUST if possible to get a Space with the "Last Fronter" if you come to Bilit. I added 3 pics of the delicious food. Others can be seen from their web page. Love
Cons: N/A
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location for spotting wildlife, yummie food. Wonderful staff. Personal touch.
Cons: Nothing
7.1 Good
Pros: Great views, awesome manager, tons of wildlife, orangutans at the hotel!
Cons: 600 steps is a lot to climb multiple times per day.
7.9 Good
Pros: The guide for the boat and jungle trips, Rodel, was very good. The for was tasty and good quality.
Cons: The bedding
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. The location was amazing. Gert, Jason and all the staff were very knowledge and friendly which made us feel at home the entire stay. Food was incredible and you won't go hungry. If you want something special, I'd recommend booking it without a second thought. Easily one of best trip we've ever done.
Cons: Nothing, honestly not even the stair climb at the end of the day
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It felt quite remote and so was super relaxing - definitely worth the stair climbing to get away from everything! The food was so so good - high quality, home cooked food - both Malaysian and western! Jason was so sweet and made us extra pancakes which to my surprise were the best I’d ever had! The tours were great - very private since the guest limit at the resort is very small. Much better than staying with the other resorts on the bank if you prefer more privacy or a more personalized tour! The other boats had large numbers of people on it and were going down the same routes, whereas our guide Rodel (sorry if I’ve spelled your name wrong!) worked hard to give us a tailored and private experience! And that was the best part of this place - it felt personal and like a home, not a big resort. The people working there were lovely, Rodel was great, and Jason was just the loveliest person EVER! Thanks so much for an I felt unforgettable experience!
Cons: Loved it all
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All staff at the property were superb, the location is amazing and the activities offered were also very good
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: First of all Jayson’s welcome, niceness and very helpful comments made our trip fantastic. Our guide was really competent and cool. The view is wonderful, the food is excellent. Lastly, I was sick during the stay and Jayson took the utmost care and did everything he could to make my stay as good as possible, even offering drinks! This guy is gold!
Cons: Maybe rooms could have AC?
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The complete package has a well designed formula from pickup at Sandakan to drop off. The personal attention and explanations by Gert. Boat safaris and hike with Rodell. Tasteful and beautiful prepared meals designed by Jason. The love of Gert for nature. The location!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Jason absolutely made our stay! Such a lovely guy, super friendly and helpful, we loved chatting with him about Borneo’s culture and environmental challenges. The cabins are beautiful and comfy, food was generous and delicious (especially the pancakes!) felt so immersed in the rainforest we actually saw a wild orangutan swinging above the resort one! Wine is of good quality and well priced
Cons: The steps!! But they are a necessary evil, totally worth it for the location and views! Although they warn you in advance it isn’t just the one trek up when you arrive ( it is each time you go on a cruise as well) our group were all relatively fit so managed it fine ( having just climbed mt kinabalu although our legs had quite recovered before this lol!) but wouldn’t have attempted it with full luggage (we packed essentials into day packs) and those less fit or mobile would find it a challenge but please don’t let this deter you if you are game!!
