What a fantastic place. Great food, great service, great Onsen. Everything was just splendid. The first place I would give such high reviews. Price Value is top of the line!
Noting. Nothing Nothing.
This was exactly what we were looking for -- a traditional ryokan with great food and outdoor onsen in the mountains near Takayama. I'm not sure what was our favorite part: the delicious 8-course dinner, the gorgeous outdoor onsens (which are private, so you can go with an opposite sex partner, or if you have tattoos), or the amazing breakfasts. It was all great! I was pretty confused when booking this place, so a few details for future travelers: You can access this lodge by taking a 90-minute bus from Takayama Bus Station (which is right next to the train station). It costs something like 2200 yen one way. The stop is H60, and the lodge is a 2-minute walk. (If you Google "Nohi Bus" you'll find all the schedules.) Once you're there, you can catch a bus to the Shinhotaka Ropeway; you can ride up it and take hikes from the top (I think the ropeway was ~2700 yen round trip). You can also hike to Kamikochi from the top of the ropeway (I think it takes like 4-6 hours), and then ride the bus back to the lodge (90 minutes with one transfer). If you're leaving on the same day as you're hiking, the ropeway station rents lockers for 500 yen.
Host is truly an amazing person, can not describe it in words. 4 private onsens, absolutely amazing. Everything was super tasty, super clean, just great.
This is really the best of my trip in Japan. The traditional Japanese style, the hospitality and the food was excellent.
It takes some time to get to the main attractions / areas, but the staff is very helpfull in supporting
The outdoor onsen are fabulous. Can close the door for privacy, the water is hot, and the setting romantic. Dinner is a must-try. Set in a private room, the food just kept on coming, and was excellent from start to finish. The room is large for a Japanese inn, with 11 tatami.
Our room didn't have a bathroom - but some of the other rooms do. Book early to bag one.
Located in Takayama, MINSHUKU TAKIZAWA is a 1-minute drive from Shin Hotaka Onsen and 5 minutes from Shinhotaka Ropeway. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
