9.5 Excellent (609 reviews)

Featured amenities include multilingual staff and laundry facilities. A train station pick-up service is provided at no charge, and free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: As soon as you enter - the atmosphere is very peaceful and relaxing. The communal spaces are in a modern Japanese style and very spacious which was a nice change of pace. The bathrooms are shared but they are very nicely done and we never had to wait. There is a large jacuzzi bath which is a nice touch. The hosts are very kind and welcoming. They offer a shuttle service into Takayama centre which is very flexible - and this means the slightly remote location is not a problem at all. The food is definitely a highlight though - breakfast was absolutely divine and the dinner was really special. Beautifully prepared and presented Italian food - highly recommend! Overall - one of our favourite stays in japan and would definitely return.
Cons: The rooms are fairly basic but this is made up for by the communal spaces.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Tranquil and relaxing, the staff was very attentive and the food was out of this world. We enjoyed our time relaxing there in between sightseeing, it was our favorite place to stay out of our whole trip. We would come back in a heartbeat. Originally we weren’t going to eat dinner because we wanted Japanese food instead of Italian but after having the breakfast we quickly changed our minds and did not regret it. The dinner was phenomenal, don’t miss it!
Cons: The location wasn’t an easy walking distance to town (approximately an hour) but they provided a free shuttle drop off and pickup to the train station downtown whenever we wanted which was very convenient and awesome.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: An hotel more in line with Japan than the West. But delightful and restful. Not a box with a bed. Interesting bathing facilities. Food exquisite
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Fantastic food, people, cleanliness, hospitality and I gave the location a 10/10 because although it is out of town (which is much more peaceful), the hosts are very generous with driving you to and from town whenever required making it incredibly easy.
Cons: If anything, the loos are not in the room, but that is part of the experience of staying at certain traditional Japanese guesthouses.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The staff is great, food fantastic (the pasta was my favourite), the room was big and comfortable and the entire place is simply beautiful... The staff are always willing to help you and they can drive you to and fromthe train station to the hotel!!
Cons: Showers and toilets are shared and it is far away from everything.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The best meal(s) I have had in a very long time! Everything on the plate was perfectly executed and super delicious! I also highly recommend taking a beautiful walk on the trail nearby before breakfast.
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great staff, great rooms and great food. The location (5 km from Takayama station) was alarming at first, but the staff and service are so amazing, they simply pick you up and get you back to the hotel/city center on demand. The hotel itself is in a very peaceful place, which makes the atmosphere super elegant and relaxing (and that’s what we looked for after a day of traveling the mountains or the old town). Everything is clean and well planned to the smallest detail. Simply a great place I would highly recommend to anyone arriving to Takayama.
Cons: The dinner was a bit too expensive (yet wonderful), but everything else was simply amazing m.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house is beautifully renovated, very cozy and the staff is this amazing family who takes very good care of its gasts! The shuttle works very smooth, you call and there are there in 15 minutes to pick you up. We stayed here three nights and used it as a base to go to Kamikochi, Takayama and Shirakawa-go. The breakfast is the best I have had, feels like you went to a fancy brunch place. Also don’t miss out on the dinner! Clean bathroom with a hottub which we enjoyed in the evenings
Cons: That we had to leave
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Our stay was fabulous. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming. We had dinner and it was sensational as was breakfast. The area is simply beautiful as well. Thoroughly enjoyed the brief stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A very clean and tidy place with a beautiful smell of timber. While the place is slightly out of town, the staff will deliver and pick up their guests from the station. Excellent.
Cons: Slightly out of town
Overview Reviews

Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. Limited parking is available onsite.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The helpful and kind staff, ready with great attractions and restaurants recommendations. The traditional Japanese style room was super comfy.
Cons: One toilete was reserved for women, which meant i founf myself waiting some time to go..
4.6 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: Staff were very present - monitoring our every move which made us quite uncomfortable. Don’t bother taking a private room- only a small thin (paper?) wall separates you from the dorm so you can hear every move and cough other guests make. We slept next to the stairs that make a lot of noise. Too expensive for what was offered.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was unique and the stuff were very pleasant
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff we so friendly and welcoming. They gave me a home made map with all the best attractions and restaurants on it! They even ran through the map with me and help my plan my stay. The bunk beds were massive and the place was very clean!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The kindness of people, quietness of the place and the details. And if f course Luke!! Thank you. Claudia
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Luke the cat and all the amazing staff. The woodwork is incredible. So much love went into this space, and it is very evident. Keep care of this place. It is magic.
Cons: There wasn't anything to not like!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The friendliness of the staff to give advice. Extra cooking facilities were available - oven, microwave, induction plate, hot water, fridge. Communal cooking, eating, reading area friendly. Seems well suited for single women travellers.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely lovely staff, Aya in particular was just so helpful and friendly. We had the family room with new tatami matting and very comfortable futons. We slept like babies. It’s 10 minutes walk from the station and the old town, which is so charming.
Cons: The shared bathroom was downstairs to the side of the common room, and like most guest houses, you need to vacate your room during the day
Yatsusankan - Takayama - Building
3
9.4 Excellent (471 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Yatsusankan in Hida, you'll be within a 15-minute drive of Takayama Jinya and Shirakabe Dozogai. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Guests may use a train station pick-up service for a surcharge, and free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was great, staffs were amazingly friendly & helpful. Location was perfect with a great view from my room facing the river view.
Cons: Nothing. It was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's difficult to start on what was it that we enjoyed the most, because we had a wonderful stay at Yatsusankan. The staff were kind and helpful, the baths are lovely and breakfast and dinner was delicious (we only had dinner there one day as we were expecting to arrive later on the first day, but it's an experience we won't forget! Breakfast was also abundant both in flavor and quantity). We were on our honeymoon and it was, by far, the most relaxing experience we had on our journey through Japan. Wish we had had more days to stay there. Hida Furukawa is also a lovely town, and Hida Takayama is only 15 min. away by train. Couldn't recommend it enough, thank you so much for everything.
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous traditional Ryokan. Superb food and amenities. Wonderful staff. Great Onsens. Enchanting.
Cons: Nothing. Even loved getting lost in the corridors.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The kaiseki meals are beautifully presented and delicious. The Onsen are beautiful, and very well provisioned. Our host took us out into the countryside at night to watch fireflies which was a great experience.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor Onsen was wonderful and pretty, with a hot tub probably 10 degrees hotter then the pool. They had shots of Sake available outside in case you got too cold??? The room was large...we had to ask for a double futon. All together the ryokan is in a sleepy little town....nothing to do there but enjoy the spa.
Cons: The dinner was perhaps too Japanese for our Western palates...portions were tiny and most of the dishes were simply not to our taste. This was not our first dining experience in Japan...so we were very disappointed especially since the ratings were so high. We had much better fare in other ryokan accommodations that were far less expensive.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were so warm and friendly, even before we arrived they were in touch to ensure we had a wonderful stay. As it was our honeymoon they gave us a lovely gift and even took our photo and had it printed as a special momento of our stay. We enjoyed dinner at the property one evening and it was amazing! So many wonderful dishes! Breakfast was also spectacular!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were picked up and droppd off at the station before and after our stay The kaiseki meals were delicious Location was convenient to the sights we wanted to see They offered free sake tasting in the Onsen area
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The food was exquisite and perfectly presented . The Onsen was also beautifully arranged and the facilities were clean and a high standard.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the best hotel we visited in Japan, hands down. Staff was friendly and spoke decent English, and the meals were incredible. Hot springs were clean and nice as well!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff was great and Kiyoko was absolutely wonderful!!
Cons: It would help if the manager behind the desk would smile once in a while ...
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great spacious room with onsen. Location is wonderful and the staff very kind. Would come again.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Modern zen in the mountains. Absolutely amazing location, superb staff and authentic Japanese cuisine beautifully presented and served in your room. Lovely hot spring pool overlooking the forest was very relaxing.
Cons: Loved everything.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful modern ryokan with very friendly staff. The Kanseki dinner was fascinating and amazing but not for the faint hearted both in size and it’s unusual palate compared to western food.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This is a very special experience and it begins with the beautiful simplicity of the hotel, its rooms and of course, the amazing private onsen in each room that is surrounded by natural beauty. The staff were delightful and helpful. Make sure you take the dinner and breakfast option to experience beautiful Japanese cuisine in your own Tatami room. There are a number of nature walks to partake in and they include stunning waterfalls and lush forest glades with babbling brooks.
Cons: If our bones/bodies were younger, they might have coped better with dining while sitting on the floor. However, we wouldn’t have missed the genuine experience it provided and we would love to return one day.
7.0 Good
Pros: Staff was very friendly, room was spacious, modern and with a lot of light. The private bath was amazing.
Cons: Hirayuonsen is a dead hole with little interest if not the easy access to Kamicochi.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything about this ryokan was excellent. The room was beautifully designed, clean, comfortable and spacious. The private onsen bath was a real highlight of our trip. The staff were kind, attentive and unobtrusive. It is probably the best hotel I've ever stayed at. We didn't want to leave. The dinner, which includes Hida beef, is well worth the price.
Cons: Nothing really. More towels would have been nice.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The private onsen.
Cons: -
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This was a beautiful luxury ryokan. The staff were wonderful and the food was delicious. The private onsen was lovely.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent rooms with a real sense of luxury. Wonderful to have our own private onsen. Staff very helpful in giving us tips on where to eat around town and arranging for us to stay an extra night. Perfect place to relax after a day in Kamikochi.

Pros: Everything was OK and owners were kind.
Cons: As I said before everything was OK.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Delicious dinner and breakfast Spacious room (deluxe) with traditional features Very kind and helpful staff Bikes available to cycle in Takayama The availability of washing machines and tumble dryers - ideal when Takayama is half way in your Japan journey Lovely onsen bath with convenient opening time during the day
9.0 Excellent
Pros: the location is very good, facility is nice clean and cozy as well, though not brand new, the hotel offers the best hospitality experience to guests with warm smiles and nice treats- we truly enjoyed their service and facilities as well. It is also educational with many of the takayama local intro, highly recommended for tourists if you stopover at Takayama for one night or two.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It's a lovely place, beautiful spacious rooms and very good breakfast and dinner. It's very well managed and the personnel is very friendly and helpful. We had to leave one day earlier and without asking they refunded the last night to us. That was so friendly and I did not expect that at all, it was our loss to have to leave earlier but they gave this amazing service, thank you for that!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The room is very confortable, also the futon. We were lucky because We enjoyed the onsen experience with few person (one time also alone). But if there are many people then it Can be not so good and relaxing. The staff is very kind.
Cons: The view from our room was like a garbage deposit or something close to. We had to stay with the window closed and imagine to have mountains behind it. If you pay 400€ for one night I think you want something different also in the background. We suggest to have the kaiseki dinner and the traditional Japanese breakfast only to those who feel ready to try it. I liked the dinner, less the breakfast (fish, soup, vegetables and so on while we are used to have brioches and cappuccino). My girlfriend none of them. Even if all was good at the end, I think 400€ is still too much for what you have back.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: A beautifully styled traditional Japanese ryokan, we particularly liked the breakfast which was an absolute feast. It’s in a perfect location, a five minute walk from some of the beautiful preserved streets, and close to some great bars and restaurants - we would definitely recommend!

9.2 Excellent

Cons: Wish they had a lower temperature Onsen too
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Their staffs are very nice and good English. Dinner and breakfast are delicious.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a true gem of an experience. We opted for the breakfast and dinner meals with our stay and i recommend you do the same because it is out of this world! Superb in everyway. Our favorite meals during our three week trip in Japan. Also, i enjoyed the alternating onsens. Finally, staff is so helpful and friendly; they went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. A memorable, delicious and delightful experience. Book now!!!!
10.0 Excellent
Cons: Great location, very clean, relaxed accommodation, friendly and helpful staff. The food was excellent. We enjoyed our stay
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great ryokan experience at very very good price. Nice onsen, welcoming and homely atmosphere, comfortable futons, absolutely delicious dinner and breakfast. The dinner consisted of several courses, we were so full but had to try everything. Meals seemed to be japanese with some western twist. The location on a little hill above the town offers nice view. Although it was OK to walk from the station for us (it is actually pleasant walk through the interesting parts of the town which we enjoyed), you dont need to walk since there is free shuttle to and from the station. The location is in walking distance to all the sights and interesting places. Everything was just perfect!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was extremely good (although slightly westernized compared to other ryokan). Location is great. Free shuttle to and from the train station was very helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Both breakfast and dinner were awesome (and so much food)! The staff was very accommodating and spoke great English, and the futons were very comfortable
Cons: It is a bit of a hike from the train station, but they offer shuttles and it's still within walking distance to Sanmachi-suji!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful stay. The rooms were nice and comfy. Everything was very clean. The onsen are perfect to relax and are switched every day, so you can enjoy both. The food was absolutely amazing, especially our Dinner at the first night! They just kept bringing more and more delicious various kinds of food!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful ryokan, nice host, amazing japanese experience and original japanese dinner and breakfast. 10/10!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Dinner and breakfast super! Little far from station but in a wonderful location for the old psrt of the city. It's a lovely place!
Sumiyoshi Ryokan - Takayama - Building
7
9.3 Excellent (471 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Sumiyoshi Ryokan in Takayama (Hida Takayama Onsen), you'll be within a 10-minute walk of Takayama Jinya and Takumikan Craft Museum. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, luggage storage, and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Really enjoyed the river and garden view from our ground floor room. This is a traditional home with amazing interiors and traditional decorations. We had a private toilet with sink even tough the booking said that toilet and bathroom were shared, so that was a welcome surprise. Enjoyed the large japanese style bath that you can use on your own. The elderly owners were very sweet and accommodating.
Cons: The windows could use some upgrade. As far as futon beds go, these were not the most comfortable ones.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staying at this ryokan was a most impressive experience in itself! The space in the building is very beautifully organized, the owners were extremely friendly and helpful, and the kaisekis we had were the most exquisite meals during our trip. If you want to relax for a couple of days and enjoy staying at a ryokan, this is an excellent choice!
Cons: It is not fare to complain with all the warmth we saw from the owners, but potential customers must be aware that staying at a traditional ryokan implies some rules, which you have to follow. For example, there is a curfew (from 11 p.m. onwards); the beds are made (by the staff) at the same place where the table is placed during the daytime. As a consequence, you have to sleep and stay awake according to the customary pattern of the house, not just your whim.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food is excellent. Admittedly a lot, but excellent.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The food and the friendly hosts
7.9 Good
Pros: Beautiful old house, lovely staff with a funny old Japanese lady. Traditional decoration that made it unique. Very good place next to the river. Breakfast is very good, both the Japanese one (recommended) and the continental one.
Cons: To be honest, I barely slept the 2 nights I was there. It's not the inn fault, but it's just that the traditional Japanese bedding is not for me. It's like sleeping on hard floor. So if you think it's not for you, maybe choose a more common hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The atmosphere. The location. The rooms. The Hosts. The meals.
Cons: No bathrooms in the rooms.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The proprietors were absolutely delightful. The location was excellent, as was the food. We were sad to leave, as we were made to feel so welcome.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was one of the best places we stayed in Japan. The staff are amazing and make you feel at home. Definitely include japanese breakfast and dinner with your stay, you wont be disappointed (or hungry after!). Served a banquet to our rooms and everything was delicious. Onsen is fantastic, turns out we were the only guests for our 2 night stay so we could use it for as long as we needed which was great after a long hike around the area. Couldnt recommend this place more, made such a change from the city. Also very close to the morning market and the centre of Takayama
Cons: Loved everything
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese hospitality. The staff is extremely friendly and so dedicated to serving their guests and explaining Japanese traditions and cuisine. Very well located next to the river, within a 10 min walk radius to Takayama’s top attractions.
Cons: N/A

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was just perfect. From the moment we reached the property it was like walking into heaven. The staff were so warm and friendly we truly felt like part of the family. The room itself is incredible, dinner is an amazing experience by itself and the taste is beyond description. The baths themselves are super relaxing and nice both the one in the room and the public one. Definitely worth the money and the visit. Would come again first chance I have.
Cons: The place itself is kind of hard to reach, especially if you don't rent a car, by car it took us around 40-50 min to reach it from takayama.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A really pretty property nestled amongst the mountains . Excellent service from staff . Dinner was divine , one of the best meal I had during the trip . In addition to private onsen in each room there are also two public onsens. hidaji was thoughtful to allow the public onsens be reserved between 9.30pm till next morning . Had a wonderful and relaxing time . Highly recommended if you are looking for a authentic Japanese experience of sleeping on tatami , soaking in onsen , good food and great hospitality .
Cons: If you don’t drive , will need some effort to get there . But once you get the instructions from staff , it’s pretty easy . Takayama JR line and bus station is right next to one another. Takayama is a beautiful town worth visiting . I took early morning JR train from Nagoya to Takayama, spend the morning there and caught the 3 something bus arriving at Hidaji just before 5pm . Next morning , the staff will send you to the bus station after checkout to catch the 11.15am bus back to Takayama .
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The onsen in the room was beautiful. The food was amazing! The whole experience was just really great.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Tatami bed very comfortable Open air bath very peaceful
9.2 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is one of the most stunning places I have ever stayed in. The breakfast and dinner were superb. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We loved everything about this place.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The most exception dinner, delectable dishes made with local ingredients. One of the best onsen ryokan dinners and breakfast I have had! The public onsen has a beautiful open view of the serene mountain surroundings, we never had to share with anyone and the ryokan was quiet and peaceful. The best service by the hotel staff.
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Food was excellent and high quality.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Communications beforehand were great, when we arrived the staff met us outside and coordinated a wonderful greeting. Made us feel truly special and take care of. Everything we needed was there and not once did we feel uncomfortable. The food was spectacular for dinner and breakfast and the staff was very helpful in making sure we enjoyed the meals to the fullest. Staying here is definitely a highlight of our trip and would highly recommend to anyone.
Cons: There wasn't much to dislike about the stay. Would have liked a seat to relax outside by the private onsen but other than that it was pretty much perfect.

A stay at Oyado Koto No Yume places you in the heart of Takayama, within a 15-minute walk of Takayama Jinya and Takumikan Craft Museum. Featured amenities include complimentary wired Internet access, complimentary newspapers in the lobby, and luggage storage. Free self parking is available onsite.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location (1min away from the bus and train station), 10min walking distance to the old part of Takayama. Super friendly host, perfect if you want to experience a Japanese Ryokan.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is located quite near the bus and the train station though it is a 15 mins walk. The hotel is quiet, cosy and very clean. The staff are very friendly especially the old lady whom we met the next morning. She speaks very good English. The Japanese B'fast is excellent which my husband and I enjoyed very much.
Cons: We didn't like sleeping in a Tatami as it is difficult for us to get up. There isn't any attached bath, again it is inconvenient. Fortunately the hotel provides a private bath which we enjoyed using it.
7.0 Good
Pros: Unique atmosphere, staff very helpful
Cons: Breakfast was Ok, not much more. Bath in room can be better
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We wanted to splurge just once during our trip to Japan to experience some classy Ryokan and I am glad we picked this one. It's ridiculously close to the train station (a 3 minute walk), very beautiful on the inside and staff are really attentive. The room was big and nice, there's a big bath in the first floor and it's filled with nice and welcoming details. Would definitely recommend!
Cons: It's certainly not cheap, but worth it.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very good ryokan in the heart of beautiful Takayama. Rooms are spatious and very clean. The onsen is small but nicely decorated. We had a room with a shower as well, which is also convenient. Staff was friendly, but also very professional and authentic which sometimes made it a bit "stiff". You receive a cup of green tea and a Japanese sweet upon check-in. You receive a kimono and yukata as well, which you can wear throughout the stay. The experience was very traditional, and this was a nice experience for once.
Cons: Expensive, but it is worth the price to have the experience. And if you are looking for a ryokan to try out during your Japan stay, then this is a very good option.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great service and friendly staff, facilities.
7.1 Good
Pros: Large rooms Onsen on site Good location near train station

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Mix of ryokan and hotel boutique. Good onsen. Clean. Great staff
Cons: Maybe a bit expensive, buy it worth spending one or two nights
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The stay at Oyada was absolutely fantastic. From the moment we booked in they explained everything about the hotel and our room 306 was fantastic. Great hotel and would recommend- worth every penny. We are currently in a very expensive Ryokan in Kyoto and it is know where near as good as this property in Takayama.
Cons: Nothing / excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location between the old town and the train station, enclosed sleeping space, plenty of showers, open and inviting feel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very close to Takayama Station (less than 5min walk). There are many lovely cafes nearby! The staff were lovely and the rules that were in place were for courtesy to the other travelers. For instance, if packing after 10pm we were asked to do so in the lobby (which is on the same floor) which was not any additional hassle for me and just generally lended for a quieter sleeping experience. Mini light and locker in each capsule. Provided with towel. The showers and toilet were lovely. The common area had really lovely natural light coming in from the windows and was lovely for journaling.
Cons: Nothing in particular! There’s no elevator to the 3rd floor where the reception is which may be relevant to some
9.2 Excellent

Pros: The staff in particular were very wonderful and welcoming, and made some excellent recommendations for restaurants that wouldn’t be busy but provided great food
Cons: The hostel was a bit stuffy and hot but it’s also summer so I can’t complain too much

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are nice and helpful. My family and I love it a lot!
Cons: Nothing I can think of. Excellent experience.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Location (right in the old town center), onsen facilities, shuttle service, service
Cons: Half board meals were good but have had more fancy ones at other ryokans, considering that the rate per night was not cheap.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was fantastic. The staff was very friendly. Hotel is located on the center of the town, closing to red brigde and morning market.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good location and good breakfast
Cons: One of the dinner we chose was a steak dinner which was served by The Alice, not a proper restaurant in town. The meal was just average and we were not impressed as Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan is an excellent ryokan. We were expecting a real onsen experience but unfortunately we were given a jacuzzi intsead.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location for exploring Takayama. Staff couldn’t do enough to help us during our stay. Expertly cooked food served in our private dinning room. Bikes available for sightseeing.
Cons: Having to leave
9.6 Excellent
Pros: very nice onsen resort
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous food and personal service.
Cons: Quite expensive but worth it.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The ambiance along with the care shown to us in setting the scene for our Japanese experience. Nothing, every detail was included from the welcome, the introduction to education re dressing in a kimono. The food was exquisitely prepared & even the futon was comfortable - it had to be after relaxing in the outdoor onsen - a unique experience.
Cons: Breakfast could have been a little more European although that would be carping.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: A perfect Ryokan experience, leaving my family, especially my son with an unforgettable memory. Thanks everyone at the Honjin hiranoya Kachoan, especially my room attendant Manami(麻奈美)!My boy likes this pretty sister very much. I am looking forward to the next trip to Japan and hope that my family will come back here again.
Cons: It would be better if hotel could inform the guests in advance more detailed introductions about the Ryokan.

6.7 Good
Pros: Good location close to the Takayama Jinja and old part of town, new place with a minimalistic Japanese design. Bed in the capsule style bunk was comfy but I was happy to be in a lower one as the upper ones are really high up, I would have had a really hard time getting up and down. The 8-bed-dorm-room I have stayed in had very little space (for e.g. to open a suitcase) between the beds but there was enough space to store your belongings under the beds. Basically just the bunk capsules in the dorm. Shower etc new and nice. Small zen-garden in the back of the house. Towel provided upon request. Common area with big wooden table to spend time together. Host Tak was friendly and spoke great English. I was able to park my motorbike for a small charge right opposite on the parking lot of a traditional bath house/onsen.
Cons: everything new and nice design but dorm room had very little extra space (capsules themselves rather big though), no washer/dryer if I remember correctly
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great value, very friendly and helpful staff.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff named 'Tasuki' is really friendly and helpful He is really cute and super well co-operative
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It’s a really relaxed safe environment. Like your family members home. You have to be comfortable in a really casual trusting environment. We got there around 1 and the door to the hotel was open there was a sign that said lock up your stuff in the back room, rent a bike if you want just write down your info in this black book. We followed all the instructions and headed out. The town is sooooo incredibly safe, I bet the biggest crime there is children stealing candy. The hotel is so so close to the old town streets, was perfect. And the grounds were simple, clean, and beautiful. The bathrooms and kitchen are shared, but I don’t believe there are very many rooms. We got a private room downstairs.
Cons: Everything was exceptional, but the walls are very very very thin here. We are heavy sleepers so it wasn’t an issue for us. We heard everyone and everything, some times sounded like it was in our room. If your a light sleeper this might be an issue.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff members were very gentle and know English very well (rare in Japan). Give all the information that you need and more... It's 5 min of walk for the historic part of the city. Everything was clean enough and comfortable. It is an hostel so do not expect big spaces and privacy. Very good for the price.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The most
Cons: Location is far from station but OK to walk
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was incredibly helpful, available, and had fluent English. Incredibly willing to help and patient with any problem you might have. Everything was very clean.
Cons: The top bunks are a little tricky to get out of due to the height and angle of the ladder. It should be fine for a normally abled person, but just an FYI if you have movement problems.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host Tats was so helpful. The accommodation was busy due to autumn festival. We got good recommendations for sightseeing and food from Tats. Takayama s very peaceful and this place is close enough to walk to everything and station. Highly recommended. The family room is very spacious and comfortable.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff was super nice and help us providing a map and recommandation for restaurants. The living room is confortable and friendly. The accommodation provide discount to go the onsen front door! Free coffee and tea is always a good idea.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The most friendly staff you could ever meet. Tats helped me a lot. Such a nice guy. Also friendly backpackers staying there and had good time. Would stay again for sure.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice place for short stay Clean room and nice staff
Cons: Unlike other youth hostels, the kitchen is in the lobby, few people cooking there. The environment was a little boring, I prefer a more friendly atmosphere. And I believe thats one of the important reason why people choose a hostel

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is great , close to JR and bus station. Convenient store, super market, places to eat , buying souvenirs and snacks , Japanee style bathing area just all at walking distance.
Cons: Everything is perfect except the fridge is a bit not clean. May be the guest when they use the fridge not really pay much attention. Anyway if hostel can do more regular cleaning and also remind users to pay more attention too. Then everything will be perfect .

Pros: Wonderful experience! Very attentive staff and beautiful grounds.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Kei met us when the shuttle bus arrived at the ryokan. He checked us in and showed us the room and then served us two dinners and two breakfasts in our private dining room. He was great. The atmosphere of the ryokan was pleasant and seemed very authentic. The food was fantastic. We had no trouble communicating with anyone. The TV had only Japanese channels, so we got a break from TV.
Cons: It’s not within walking distance of the sights, but the shuttle bus is very efficient and we did not need to use a taxi.

Cons: Fantastic experience to do once (and more!) in a life. Relaxing place and wonderful hospitality. Madame Ochiai was all the time at our side and disposal. She has been so kind and gentle (moreover, she speeks a very good English). We slept in a futon bed and a japanese room. I will recommend this place to all my friends. GREAT STAFF.

They have a small foot bath near the entrance of the Ryokan, public onsens for guests and you can also book a private onsen. The staff were very friendly and are there to help you in any way. Overall, we were very happy with our stay!

Very nice staff and even though their english is broken communication flows. We loved the dining experience! A bit expensive but worth it to embrace the local culture. You get to try several traditional dishes and yes, it is a loooot of food. They give you traditional kimonos so you can dress up.

Pros: We stay at this hotel for four nights and booked a twin room ( we had two bookings one for a std twin room and one for a large twin room). On check in, the hotel had joined our bookings and upgraded our whole stay to a large twin room with breakfast. The room was large for Japan at 25m2. It is very nicely furnished and has everything you need-TV, coffee machine, kettle, fridge and a wardrobe. The room is serviced everyday if you require it. The hotel offers tower parking for a fee which was very convenient. We would stay here again.
Cons: The room was expensive in comparison to some of our other Japanese accomodation

7.9 Good
Pros: First of all the staff is amazing and the food was good. The other things... Well... We picked up this accommodation to experience some "local" things during our first trip to Japan - sleeping on tatami, having dinner with some local specialities, onsen... If you're reading this review guess you're looking for the same kind of things. Did we like the place?.. Well, we experienced, yes. Would we advise the same to somebody - it depends. To sleep on the floor is not for everybody. Getting naked with the others in onsen - yes, we did it but can't suggest. Dinner?.. it was really different experience and guess we liked but nothing wow! Overall, good we stayed here and experienced a lot of interesting and unusual things. But don't think would repeat.
Cons: Didn't like the lighting - white fluorescent lamps make everything so gloomy and boring :( Bathroom didn't seem to be very clean. Floor - there were some hair and dust in the corners. Wearing the sleepers provided by the hotel made us think "how many guests were going and coming to this place and had the same sleepers"... Such kind of things which are not crucial for us but might be for the others.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Had a lovely stay. Value for money, great diner.
Cons: Breakfast.
7.9 Good
Pros: Food was excellent
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very friendly!! Car valet parking Futon was much more comfortable than I first thought Food was good, served in the room, didn’t have any problems with the smell as other reviews mentioned.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice location, close to the town center but not in the busiest streets. Quiet. Our first experience on tatami was comfortable! There’s a Japanese restaurant downstairs that we didn’t try, but sounds to be very good. The staff was very helpful and gave us good advice for the famous hida beef at a reasonable price.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: vraiment tres bien situé dans la vieille ville.
Cons: shared a night with other (japonese?) guests who stole all what they can.. (tens of ear plugs (?), all the Q-tips (?), etc). completely incredible.
5.8 Okay
Pros: The futon was comfy
Cons: We received an email stating there is a bar downstairs and it might be noisy until 22, it was super noisy until 23 and we could hear the music and loud conversations clearly. We had to catch an early train so it wasn’t very relaxing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The place has been refurbished and was totally new. Confortable, all toilet facilites provided, coffee and tea free, a little fridge inside our own room and yukata and tootbrush inside the room
Cons: Check-in was in other place about 15' walking. The boy who attended us was very helpless and hadn't good communication skills. The room has a false ceiling through which early morning light spreaded to all the room.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was in walking distance and the restaurant downstairs is amazing, didn't have any noise complains, maybe because we staid there untill closing time
Cons: Check-in and luggage drop-off only available at the Takayama station location.
6.7 Good
Cons: The noisy bar donwstairs, supposed to be closed at 10pm but opened until, at least, 11 pm...not helpful for sleeping quietly...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: nice Japanese traditional style bedroom, spacious bedroom, clean and comfortable
Cons: none
