Torre Alta Lodge - Turrialba - Outdoors view
1
9.7 Excellent (103 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Our relaxing cabin is located across the valley from the Turrialba and Irazu Volcanos. Each morning you can wake to see the plume of smoke from the Turrialba volcano in front of your cabin and the Caribbean coast far off in the distance. We offer our guests a unique experience where they can discover Costa Rican nature unlike anywhere else. We offer guided tours that include birdwatching, hiking, and horseback riding. Additionally, our guests can enjoy local activities such as whitewater rafting and visits to Guayabo, an indigenous archeological site. We provide breakfast which is included with your stay, as well as high speed wifi in your cabin, Additional meals are available for an additional cost and the cabin is equipped with a small fridge that our guests can use to keep any food they might choose to bring. The cabin is rather isolated and the last mile and a half of road before getting to the cabin requires a 4x4 car. However, we do offer shuttle service from the nearby town of San Rafael. Torre Alta Lodge is really a unique place to stay. It is ideal for the traveler interested in truly relaxing and getting away from the turmoil of modern life. Come visit us and enjoy a Costa Rican experience like no other!

9.2 Excellent (396 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Featuring free WiFi throughout the property, Hostel Casa de Lis offers accommodation in Turrialba, 44 km from San José. A flat-screen TV with cable channels is available. There is a shared kitchen at the property. Heredia is 49 km from Hostel Casa de Lis, while Santa Cruz is 9 km away. The nearest airport is Tobías Bolaños International Airport, 50 km from Hostel Casa de Lis.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We were received in a friendly manner and were first allowed to view the rooms. Great clean and spacious rooms with clean bathroom. Everything was well explained and also with regard to the trips we could gather all the information at the reception: tour, price, transport, restaurants! with route description !! Finally a kitchen with sufficient and clean cooking and eating utensils. The roof terrace was also very popular.
Cons: The location is a bit outside the center, but that is not a problem. You do hear the deceleration of the dozens of heavy trucks that descend the slope to Turrialba. But I wonder if there is a place in Turrialba where you don't hear this noise ...!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was super nice, our double room with private bathroom was perfect and clean for a short stop in Turrialba. The recommended rafting was also amazing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Casa de Lis exceeding my expectations, best hostel I have stayed in. The kitchen was very well equipped and clean. There didn't seem to be many people staying and there was heaps of room in the fridge. I splurged and had a double room with balcony and en-suite which was bliss. The bed was really comfy, linen was acceptable, the room super clean. Great location, right in the centre of Turrialba, 20min walk to CATIE and the Jardin Botanico. 5min walk from the Transtusa bus depot. Lis and staff super knowledgeable and willing to help with all needs and information. I was super impressed and rate this place very highly.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Good equipped kitchen where you can cook breakfast/dinner. Supermarkets are close. On Thursday and Friday the weekly market is just around the corner for fresh fruit and vegetables. Nice and clean room. Cosy rooftop terrace to eat your meals. The hostel works with a rafting company, which offer a rafting tour including lunch. You can make a reservation at the desk for the next day. Although it is a hostel, it does not really carry a backpacker vibe ideal for the solo backpacker (at least that is how I experienced it during our stay).
Cons: Nothing. Turrialba itself is not a very interesting town; people come here mainly for the rafting.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Nice place to stay, feels homely and very tastefully decorated. Great terrace and garden. Right in the centre of town.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: best hostel we stayed in in Costa Rica. The facilities were great, rooms were comfortable and clean. There is a cool roof terrace where you can sit at night, great for meeting people and having a drink. The locaiton is easy to find and quite central, feels very safe. Staff were great and helped if you needed with setting up tours etc. Would definitely stay again,
Cons: nothing
7.5 Good
Pros: Good place if you are planning to do rafting in the area. The tour operator they cooperate with did a very good job and the hostel will arrange the booking and you will be picked up in the morning, which was exactly what we needed. The hostel in itself is nothing super special, but it is clean and well run and has a nice patio plus a little rooftop terrace. It's also right in the centre of town so it's easy to get breakfeast or dinner one or two blocks away.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean room and toilet, nice employees, close to everything
Cons: Nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: We were fortunate enough to have a 4 bed dorm to ourselves during our stay, the beds were all very clean and comfortable. 2 fans in the room kept us cool at night. Excellent communal kitchen. Volunteers were all lovely and very chatty! We had to change our plans last minute and arrived 2 days early, they were very accommodating and helpful making a slightly stressful day run a lot better. Arranged white water rafting for us with a fantastic company which we would highly recommend!
Cons: Had a few plumbing issues with the downstairs bathroom but that’s hardly the hostels fault!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The comfortable and clean room, the friendly atmosphere, the guides and books available. Fast internet.. all great
Cons: All great!

8.0 Excellent
Pros: HUGE balcony with great view! Nice breakfast and comfy bedrooms. Mrs. Gerardina it's very friendly and accommodating, great for chat at the kitchen area.
Cons: Bathroom was smelly. Staff it's Spanish only, not an issue for me, but something to consider for some travelers. Google translate can come handy!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, you are sitting at 1000m altitude and you have great views over the city of Cartago and the mountains. Very friendly host, the room was great, very spacious and clean. Loved the dogs!
Cons: Everything was great apart from the fact there was no warm water.
9.3 Excellent

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent views, lovely rooms. The staff and breakfast were fab. Good WiFi. Dogs were adorable.
Cons: One morning the water in our room didn’t work, we didn’t raise it with the owner because we were going rafting, but it was working on our return anyway so all good.
6.3 Good
Pros: The view front the balcony was lovely. From what I could see of the other rooms they looked much better than ours.
Cons: We had a room under the balcony so no view and no internet. No coffee/tea making facilities in room. No hairdryer or TV. Really hard mattress.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, good breakfast, clean well maintained property.
Cons: No complaints

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful location, beautiful surrounding.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent staff! Gorgeous property. Rooms are beautiful and well-appointed. The grounds are tropical with lots of wildlife and flowers.
Cons: Sadly, the spa uses products that are full of chemicals and brands that can be purchased from the grocery store. I had to cancel my spa appointment once I saw the products. When you check in they give you a cold cloth for your face that smells like heavy cleansers. Maybe some essential oils or something else natural could be used instead? Also- the rooms have no air conditioning or fans are were extremely hot and stuffy.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful setting and architecture! Not crowded and unique. Personalized service!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This is an intriguing, romantic and exotic place to stay; it has a unique charm but it is hard to get to as it is a long way off the beaten track. We used it as a break on our journey from Alajuela to Puerta Viejo de talamanca. It is a beautiful building, it has a relaxed feel, it is set in lovely grounds, the birds are lovely to watch. Nice bar/lounge area. Very reasonable food too. Drinks a little expensive but you are in a remote place. If the pool was working I would stay here again for 1 or 2 nights.
Cons: This is an intriguing, romantic and exotic place to stay; it has a unique charm but it is hard to get to as it is a long way off the beaten track. Pity the rooms have no a/c. We got a lot of insect bites here and I think that's why. Our big disappointment was that the swimming pool was out of action whilst we were there, it was closed for maintenance. I would have liked to have been told in advance. There isn't that much else to do in the area. I didn't ask for it and maybe I should have but I did hope the staff would offer some sort of discount on the price but they didn't
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The building is amazing, the scenery really beautiful
Cons: Having an AC would have been much better experience
7.5 Good
Pros: We had a lovely time with our family, the staff and the food was very good. The rooms were very comfortable.
Cons: the bathrooms need some updating and chairs on the balcony as well.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very close to volcano. Beautiful view. Good breakfast. Everything was great
5.8 Okay
Pros: I liked the location in the mountains, the views and the beautifull garden of the hotel. The breakfast was also nice: fresh fruits, fresh baked bread, etc. The staff was helpfull and friendly.
Cons: I didn't like the fact that the hotel's interior was strongly outdated. The rooms of the garden suites were noisy. The outside door only stayed close if you locked it. The water closet sometimes stuck and the water kept running. Furthermore: the dinner I had in the restaurant didn't help: two pieces of sour smelling pig meat with a poor 1970's salad of a letuce leaf with some beetroot on it. The baked patatoes were oké.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Customer Service was great, Cesar and crew were super helpful the whole time!!
Cons: No pool like we thought there would be and paying for most meals and the cost of transportation was hard on a budget.
9.3 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Mostly the staff. They were amazing.
Cons: There is nothing we can think of that we didn't like.
4.5 Okay
Pros: Breakfasts were good.
Cons: Shower did not work. Toilet needed repair. Lighting was poor. Noisy church next door. Internet was poor in some rooms but better in others.
7.5 Good
Pros: Good location with nice communal spaces. Basic rooms but clean and fine for the price, nothing fancy. Caged parking a little way down the road and secure front entry system. Breakfast felt good with a large communal table for all patrons.
Cons: We were downgraded for some reason but were given a discount which was fine. There was a bit of hard sell on some tourist tatt laid out on the floor first thing in the morning. I feel the inside of a hotel should be your sanctuary from this kind of hassle. The shower was one of these water heater heads but in very poor condition. Run the water at half to get a dribble of warm water....if you dare!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great garden, large breakfast, good coffee, staff was friendly, rooms were spacious, bed really and linen comfortable, safe parking available
Cons: Everything was great
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The common space available inside was huge so it would be the kind of place you could stay a while and not feel cramped. Host was very helpful and gave good recommendations on restaurants. Breakfast was pretty good.
Cons: The street around the hotel was not that great but just go a block towards the square and it gets better. The A/C was only in 1 of the rooms.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location was good. Was quiet. Nice little courtyard area
Cons: Toast at breakfast was stale. Trouble sleeping in the bed, it was squeaky and couldnt set the temperature right in the room
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was delicious. The location was right around the corner from the town center. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended. They recommended Turrialba Shuttle service From the San Jose airport. It was also a great experience
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location , staff , common areas
Cons: With a little TLC and upgrades , this property could be awesome.

Pros: Wonderful area of Costa Rica. Friendly and helpful. Recommend the coffee tour. We loved it.
9.3 Excellent
Cons: The mosquito net in the room could have been better.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It is a great place to unplug and get away from civilization. The owners of the farm were extremely gracias and my son and I enjoyed chatting with them over our breakfast of fresh eggs, bread, fruit and organic coffee grown on the premises.
Cons: I would have liked hot water to take a shower.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Eco decks were perfect location to disconnect and be in the middle of nature. The breakfast was so delicious all with homemade products. We stayed three nights and did the following activities: white water rafting in pacuare river, coffee tour and horse back riding in the finca. It was incredible - such an amazing experience. From all our trip this was definitely the less touristy place, we felt completely involved with locals. Will love to come back. Thanks Melanie for taking good care of us and for guiding us through a wonderful horse ride experience.

Cons: N/A
7.0 Good
Pros: If you are looking for solitude and everything what previous reviews said, you will find it there. -Perfect for yoga retreats etc. For us personally, it was too cold in the night -what we expected, but in the end we wanted to be in Costa Rica for some warm sunshine. :) The lady was supernice at check in and cooks everything with love. Locationwise it's a rather bumpy way to get there -good car recommended! The paths are very nice to walk but also done in half a day. For other day-trips or tour, you would have to drive all the way to the center again.
5.5 Okay

Pros: The gardens and the wood style room.
Cons: It could have a small corner to smile inside the property.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel is already a bit older but well maintained. Room was quite big and had hot shower. Staff is friendly and nice, breakfast was good. Nice view to turrialba volcano from the hotel and we also saw a toucan in the morning.
Cons: Walls are really thin and you can hear the neighbors talking (and other things they are doing...) Although there was only one other couple while we where there, they were given the room next to us.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Large, comfortable room with all amenities described in their listing. Breakfast was generous and good. The one dinner we had was ok, at a good price. The highlight for us was the forest location with sloth and many birds(including more toucans and oropendarens than we'd seen in the previous month in Costa Rica). On the other hand, location was isolated, not convenient without a car. Owners were lovely, offered expert advice on the area, showed us their computer live-feed of Volvan Turrialba, pointed out birds once they knew we were interested.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great owners and staff, lots of toucans in the morning and evening, good food, nice people in town and beautiful location.
Cons: Wish my spanish was better but was able to work around it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the big room and the views were fantastic despite the cloud cover. The place was family run, we were made to feel very welcome, and the food was excellent. The rooms had benches outside had benches outside where you can sit and enjoy the view and bird life.
Cons: The bathroom had a shower that didn't work. Luckily we had two bathrooms in the room. The bathroom were quite dark.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: the view was great (when not foggy/cloudy) beds were comfortable mosquito nets around the bed friendly staff the trail was very short, but nice
Cons: bathrooms were dark food was more expensive than other places no windows, just 4 glass doors, but only 1 opens too far to walk into town

6.8 Good
Pros: It's a beautiful property surrounded by nature and staff is kind.
Cons: They don't clean bathrooms and don't change bedsheets regularly. Beds had a funny smell. We checked out in the morning and left for a tour to the Turrialba volcano. We returned very late at night without a place to stay, Then We had to check in for a second night. They assigned us the same bedroom without even having made beds or cleaned anything.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The owners, makes you feel like home. The place is built in the midele of the forrest, so at night is very peacefull, so you can rest, and in the morning the sound of birds wakes you up. Big deck with hammoks and really super fresh air that you can breath, really great view, and even some materials if you like to draw. Really nice cooking area. I was not expecting to have such a nice time.
Cons: It was not that clean, but compared to other places, its ok. The bed spread was stained or smeared with something, because it was late (11.30pm) and I was just arriving, I didn´t want to find out. Solution: so slept over te covers. Room a little humid, but really normal, considering were it is located. Solution : It Just needed to be vented for a while, and perfection for a nice sleep.
4.5 Okay
Pros: Hotel has amazing outside area, where you can enjoy cup of tea with a beautiful view. Kitchen was well equipped. Staff are nice too.
Cons: There was a terrible smell in our room, our sheets and especially from the toilet. Sheets are so worn out that they look like unwashed.. and I don’t think toilet was cleaned lately, beds are all different size, hight...so sad to see guest house having a potential as outside is beautiful, walls in the room were freshly painted, curtains nearly new, and not fixing things I mentioned before.
6.3 Good
Pros: The place was decent and the space was what I expected.
Cons: Firstly, when we arrived, nobody was at the front desk, the office was locked and we had actually arrived within the arrival period we had mentioned. Then when we finally banged on the door loud enough (15 mins or so), the owner came through, and he didn't have our booking. Because the internet doesn't actually work there (unknown for how long, it didn't work at all while we were there). Our friends came to stay with us the next day and they had an even harder time getting into the office (30 mins), and then were told that there was no space and that they couldn't stay (because he didn't have internet, he didn't get their booking and had booked up). In the end, and after some arguing, he let them stay and instead moved another person's booking to a local hotel. Kind of puts a sour taste in your mouth.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice building/ balconies and views. Fantastic kitchen. Really great host Thank you
Cons: Not by the river, as per the name! More like “Spanish by the road into Turrialba “ But don’t let that put you off Great stop over. Cabins are quiet
7.5 Good
Pros: A realy nice spot right at the jungle! The staff here is very kind, we loved the way the threated us. There is a common kitchen you can use and a lot of places to chill, in the hammocks or one of the tree couches.
Cons: There was a funny smell in our room, and the matresses arent that new any more.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The staff were friendly, accommodating, helpful, and generous. They helped set up plans for the next day and were able to recommend local restaurants as well as give directions to our next destination. The view from the porch in the morning was amazing, seeing toucans and many other types of birds. It was glorious.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: This fantastic building was a great place to chill out for the afternoon. We didn't have a car, which limited our options for exploring Turrialba. However, Spanish By the River offered such a nice deck and hammocks to relax in, that we didn't care! Staff friendly. Bear in mind that this hostel is a few kilometers up hill from the town of Turrialba so its either a decent hike or taxi / car ride to get there. But it's worth it!
Cons: Place could have been a little cleaner, but this was not a big problem considering the property was otherwise wonderful and the price reasonable.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Fernando, the owner, was very kind, helpful to show me the best way to arrive to the airport.
Cons: There is an apartment over the room I slept. You can hear people walking at night.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Spacy, comfy commons. Nice atmosphere. Pleasant having breakfast all together around the table. Large windows and so a lot of light in the living room
Cons: Cash only. Not really an issue but I wanted to mention it somewhere for people to know and so plan for it :-)

7.0 Good
Pros: Good staff comfortable beds relatively clean
Cons: Incredibly loud traffic noise, especially sugar cane trucks beginning at 6 am continuing until bedtime VERY disturbing
5.0 Okay
Cons: Although described as ‘clean and modern’ by Lonely Planet, this hotel was neither. It is not expensive, so our expectations were not that high, but still it was of disappointing prize-quality. Crappy beds and pillows. Breakfast wasn’t much better. Friendly staff though.

Pros: Good central location
Cons: Small rooms with no AC

6.8 Good
Pros: The hotel is in a quiet corner. The owner lives in one of the rooms sohe is almost always there. Fine for a one to two night stopover. Great market just down the street and the mana restaurant for breakfast.
Cons: The tap dripped all night. Only very cold water to shower with. The owner had forgotten our booking and the hotel was closed. After pounding on the door he appeared and we got our room. Turrialbi is not a tourist place.
7.5 Good
Pros: Very welcoming and helpful staff. Nice shared kitchen - shared with the family so well equipped and very clean. Good location for bus station
Cons: Rooms upstairs have a makeshift feel to them, a bit like an unfinished DIY project with thin walls. As usual in Costa Rica, not particularly good value for money
5.5 Okay
Pros: Very well located, 3min walking from the bus station. We have used the kitchen it was very useful
Cons: Very dirty room and bathroom Too much expensive
