We liked the olde worlde atmosphere and the beer garden. The staff in reception and the bar/restaurant were friendly and courteous. Car parking is convenient and there is an overflow car park a short walk away if it's busy.
We knew it was located a little outside the city centre but beware there is a fairly steep walk to the centre. The weather was warm and consequently, the room was a little too warm at night. The big problem was the temperature of the en suite shower room. It was so warm in there at any time of day that you couldn't get dry after a shower. There was a fan in the wall which seemed to be blowing air into the room. There was dust in the vents which was blown out and on to our belongings from time to time. These things were mentioned to reception but nothing was done to remedy them. This experience alone would make it unlikely I stayed there again. We decided to try the hotel restaurant for our evening meal on the Sunday and opted for the Sunday roast. I have no hesitation in saying that it was the worst restaurant meal I have had for years. The beef was tough and everything else was overcooked. Enquiries revealed that they only make that meal at lunchtime so ours had been kept warm for hours or warmed up. They offered compensation - a free dessert!
Staff were friendly and welcoming. Hotel is very clean. Good, secure car park.
The old part of the house was full of character, gorgeous old beams and plenty of room, lovely staff and very comfortable room and large bathroom
The breakfast was certainly generous but perhaps a little underdone
The evening meal was superb and the young lady who served us was so friendly, helpful and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble for her. She is an asset to your hotel. All the other staff were very pleasant also. We had a really lovely stay and would definitely stay again if we come to Colchester again. Thank you
All hotels wherever we go have high tog duvets! A choice of a cooler one would be lovely! There was nothing else we didn't like. It was lovely.
There was a lovely comfortable bed in a large room with a good en-suite shower. The staff were very helpful. I didn’t eat at the hotel at all but the breakfast room was set up nicely.
The room was a bit shabby as there was a very large patch of staining on the wall where there had once been a large leak. The room was rather noisy as it was next to the busy road and the secondary double glazing didn’t really make much difference. Not living in the area I had no idea that the roads nearby were so busy and noisy.
The oldest Hotel in England's oldest recorded town. The Best Western Rose and Crown Hotel, originally a 14th century posting house, lovingly restored to a modern day hotel. Nine executive rooms featuring flat screen LCD televisions, air-conditioning, laptop charging safes and premium quality fixtures and furnishings. Alternatively, choose from the historic oak beamed rooms in the original house, or the more contemporary rooms in the main building. All rooms have an entertainment system and either Wi-Fi or Internet data port. The Oak room restaurant has been recently refurbished and offers a contemporary setting and great casual dining, a favorite with the locals and guests alike. Have a pre-dinner drink in either the hotel lounge or enjoy the Tudor Bar/Brasserie with its more traditional foods and ales. The hotel is within walking distance of Colchester Town centre (15 minutes) and accessible to all the historic sights of East Anglia. The Best Western Rose & Crown in Colchester was awarded Best Small Hotel in Essex.
