Overview Reviews
When you stay at Stoke by Nayland B&B Poplars Farmhouse in Colchester, you'll be 14 minutes by car from Sir Alfred Munnings Art Museum. Free self parking is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A beautiful period house, 20 minutes walk outside Stoke by Nayland, in pristine quiet (except for some tawny owl calls). Our room ("Boat room") was large, 4 pillar bed, perfect shower, all exceptionally clean. Breakfast: I'm not lying, one of the best we ever had, everything made to order. Lot's of walking possibilities. Host David Kerr provides good maps.
Cons: Nothing not to like. Well, maybe some scale in the water cooker.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing hosts, accommodation and location. The attention to detail is spot on and the breakfast was possibly the best I've ever had!
10.0 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Beautiful, comfortable large room with gorgeous views of the gardens. Elegant decor, high quality bed and bedding - you can tell a lot of love and attention has gone into the whole house. We visited as a family of 4 and the property provided a cot and small bed. Nothing was any trouble and the hosts couldn't have been more accommodating. Excellent, quality breakfast with lots of options. We travel regularly to the area to visit family and usually book into The Crown in Stoke by Nayland. We always leave feeling a little disappointed with the standard. So we were delighted to discover this gem of a property when we found The Crown was fully booked. So glad we did as there is no comparison. We're already planning our return visit.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The house was easy to find and Alicia was there to greet us on arrival. Alicia was an excellent host and the place exceeded our expectations. We found the bed to be really comfortable with plenty of pillows and lovely fresh, clean linnen. Robes were also provided. The whole place is very sweet and the jacuzzi bath is a real bonus. Alicia added lots of extra touches with made our stay really special. Breakfast was yummy and we couldn't have asked for more. I'd definitely recommend a stay here.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved it all.. lovely comfy private lounge, awesome bathroom and romantic bedroom. Yummy brekkie too.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Alicia is an excellent hostess. She takes great pride in her business and works hard to ensure the very best for her guests. Lovely breakfast in the morning - delicious array of pastries! Xx
Cons: Sofa bed was on the softer side
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Alicia always makes me feel like an honoured guest and nothing is too much trouble for her.
Cons: Having to rush off home to an appointment instead of taking another walk on the village green.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked everything about Jasmine cottage. The location is excellent Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester are only a short drive away. There was a pub literally next to the cottage which had an extensive menu. There was also a restaurant a little walk over the green that had very good reviews but we did not get the chance to visit. Alicia (the owner of the cottage) was a very good host. Nothing was too much for her and she made us and my dog feel very welcome. There were so many facilities available to us free wifi, a small fridge, glasses and an abundance of fluffy towels and dressing gowns. Breakfast was amazing and plentiful. We also tried the jacuzzi bath which was a very memorable experience. We all absolutely loved Alicia and the cottage and will be going back.
Cons: Having to leave.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Alicia could not have been more helpful. I booked this stay for my wife, who was staying for the night before my wedding and Alicia was always willing to go the extra mile. She helped us on the morning of the wedding and was the personification of helpfulness and more welcoming than I could possibly have hoped for.
Cons: Nothing - it was all perfect
10.0 Excellent
Pros: From the moment we arrived to a very warm welcome from the lovely Alicia, we were bowled over by this enchanting place to stay. We have stayed at many 5 star properties all over the world, but have very rarely experienced the level of personal service and attention to detail to be found at the Jasmine Room. Nothing was too much trouble for Alicia (she even offered us a lift to the wedding we were attending in the area!) and the little touches she provides make for a very comfortable stay. Breakfast, served in your own private sitting room, was superb, with an extensive choice of delicious food. We were in the area for a wedding, but would not hesitate to make the journey from London for another relaxing weekend away at this charming place in a beautiful village setting. Massive thanks to the lovely Alicia!
Cons: Nothing could be bettered - it was faultless!

Pros: Great shower, very comfy bed and friendly helpful staff. Highly recommend a stay there.
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent, freshly cooked breakfast, ordered the previous evening Spacious room with very new fittings and furnishings Excellent shower
Cons: I could not get a connection to the wifi in my room - advised on my phone that I should move closer to server......hmmmmmm! I seemed to take everyone by surprise on arriving at my specified time - still unsure which is the official entrance! I appreciate that the carpet was new but still unusual to be asked to take shoes off when entering the room!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every single member of staff was welcoming, helpful, happy and delivered a faultless service.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Despite being limited for choice the venue was great.
Cons: It was a bit more expensive than the local premier inn but worth it.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: I liked the room, and the view across the green. Nice that there was a standing fan in the room.
Cons: Only one small towel provided. I like to use a separate one for my hair. For the price I was not impressed by the food. My husband had linguine which was OK. The filo tart looked much nicer than it tasted. Too much pastry that was crisp and dry where it was not against the tart. It was misleading to say that as customers we would get a 10% discount off the restaurant bill. I assumed "the bill" was for all food and drinks. Although 2 of us stayed, there were 5 of us eating. The only discount given was on the food ONLY that my husband and I ate. Would not return.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff, food, ambiance and accommodation were all fantastic.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Bed very comfy.Food delicious. Service friendly and efficient.

7.0 Good
Pros: The breakfast was pleasant. Little bit tired but the bathroom was lovely. Decor a bit twee for me. Bed comfy.
Cons: There was notices everywhere "don't have guests" - which I couldn't have my family over to see me that night.. warning notices, don't do this and don't do that and felt like living with your parents. I was scared to relax in case I messed up the place. NOTE: advert online said breakfast included in price and then next day had to pay extra! Not happy. Won't stay again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved everything about my stay. The location is perfect - quiet, peaceful and very private. What really blew me away though was the attention to detail throughout and the quality of the furnishings. Most accommodation has the bare minimum but not at Pheasant Suites, everything has been thought about and made available. The little touches were welcome such as a comfortable leather sofa, a full length foot stool, plenty of plugs, a luxury bathroom with a large shower and beautiful bath; a remote control fan over the comfiest of beds and those feather pillows were just the best. It was a real delight to stay here and I was sorry my stay was only overnight.
Cons: Nothing - it was perfect.

Pros: Every thing
Cons: Nothing to dislike Wonder
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Just stunning all round. High end finish in the rooms and a matching approach to customer service, without being stuffy. Unmatched locally.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is in a great location in the very centre of colchester. Our room was very comfortable. It was elegant rather than cosy. The bed itself I found very comfortable but was a little on the hard side for my husband's liking. The bathroom was large and quite luxurious. The breakfast was included in our rate, and offered a very good selection of cooked meals, which were all good. There is free parking at the hotel, just behind it I had requested a room with a walk in shower which is what I was given, so they clearly listen to customer requests
Cons: The shower rose needed cleaning so the shower was rather feeble. The selection for a continental breakfast was quite adequate but not exceptional.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was clean and the Nespresso machine and complimentary drinks were a bonus. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great. We will definitely be back

Cons: It’s fantastic property, clean, everything you need are providing from the owner They are friendly and I will never forget them

Pros: Phyllis is a generous and warm-hearted host who made us feel very welcome. The property’s location is exquisite. We could easily reach child-friendly coastal towns and local activities, then come ‘home’ to absolute peace and tranquility. Our beds were lovely and comfortable and we thought the property was good value for money.
Cons: If there was a washing machine, it might make the property even more accessible to families with small children/babies, but we managed just fine :-)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the peace and quiet of this pretty little lodge. Perfect for our family get away this year. Our kids loved the quaintness of the location. It was a short drive to the Clacton beach and pier but we felt we had the best of both worlds. Beach down the road and escape to the countryside when the day was over. Clean accom, towels, bedding etc all thoughtfully provided. Extra thoughtful touches like hand soap, dishwashing liquid even milk and juice all left for us. Wonderful hosts.... Thank you xx

Pros: Everything was wonderful
Cons: Bit expensive
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Been here many times now, the staff are so friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble . The beds are really comfortable. The bonus is that you get taken back and forth to Milsoms and le Talbooth so no driving involved The food at Talbooth is excellent, Milsoms more casual, but again, great food.
Cons: The only small niggle is that the rooms need to be redecorated as do the common areas, starting to look a bit tired.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic.
Cons: Our room, the Brooke was extremely warm at night despite the radiators being off.
7.5 Good
Pros: I thought the breakfast and service was excellent. The breakfast room was light and bright with pleasant views of the gardens. The chauffeured transport to and from the two restaurants was very welcomed.
Cons: We thought our room which was small, with little natural light and with french doors leading out to a small, damp patio was not worth the money we paid. The room opposite, however and unoccupied was bigger and had natural light plus a nice view of the surrounding countryside.

There is onsite parking for 4 cars, three sitting rooms, 4.5 bathrooms, two kitchens, a secluded, rambling garden with alfresco dining and seating area, a woodland play area with trampoline and swings and is surrounded by a 15ft high wall. Also a lovely cat Hargie who wonders around.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great quiet location. The room was very pretty and spacious. Comfy bed, shared bathroom wasn’t a problem. Annie was a kind and helpful host. And it’s always a plus when there’s a cuddly cat in the house.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable bed, lovely owner and very clean. Would definitely return!
5.8 Okay
Pros: My stay there was peaceful. Cosy bed and clean towels . Generally clean traditionally set accommodation
Cons: Old delapidated wooden flooring. Side door entrance.A roaming cat. No wardrobe in my room . No TV. No hanging area. Leaking wooden bathroom walls/corners. The house is definitely not mordern and needs refurbishment . The accommodation seems rather overpriced £69 per night for a double room with shared facilities on a weekday.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Safe parking, central location in nice city, wonderfull private garden, cosy styled and comfortable rooms and best host ever. About 30 minutes straight to Harwich ferry. In the very heart of Colchester, walking distance to restaurants, castle etc. but in a very quiet street.
6.7 Good
Pros: The location of the house is great and the bed was super comfy.
Cons: I don't know if it was the look they were going for in bathroom in our room but it was half finished and the fake tiling was barely attached. The room was clean but there was cobwebs on the lightshades, nothing major. The promise of parking then no parking being available because one of the guests wasn't a confident driver parking. The security of the house isn't great. The coded lock on the main door could be broken in to easily and no key was given for the room door. There is a slide bolt on the room door can only be locked in the inside so you have to leave the room unlocked if you're going out. The bathroom door didn't have a lock or even a latch so you couldn't close the door over/lock it/keep it from opening.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location is really good, close to everything you’ll need! Annie is a fantastic host and her staff are terrific. Highly recommend this place.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The quirky building, large garden and very large bed
Cons: It is located close to a bell tower that chimes through the night

Pros: The property and staff
Cons: What I was charged
8.3 Excellent
Pros: big rooms
Cons: prefer breakfast buffet instead of fixed menu breakfast

Pros: I like that the Hotel is next to the Essex University with direct excess. The rooms are spacey, in the older Part the English Classic Sweets and in the new part of the hotel, the modern style. It is very nice opportunity to choose of, during your stay in Colchester . Also i like to idea that you can actually choose from 2 kinds of breakfast, so depending on your mood and hunger you choose again.

Cons: Nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was in a beautiful setting and the breakfast was the best we have ever had. The choice was wonderful and it was hot and plentiful. In fact in was actually too much. The staff were very friendly and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. The bed was very comfortable and cosy.
Cons: The front bedroom was rather noisy with the front door banging and one morning at 1.30am a car pulled outside our ground floor bedroom with the lights shining in and the engine running for 10 minutes. Apart from that it was very convenient as my husband is not very good on the stairs. The bedroom was very spacious with a large en suite bathroom.
7.1 Good
Pros: The staff in the spa and restaurant were really helpful and friendly. The hot stone massage was extremely good. The women serving us our evening meal was super lovely. We had a superior double; the bed was extremely comfy and the size of the room and bathroom was great.
Cons: We didn't get a very warm welcome and often we felt we were imposing as staff would let us stand around for quite sometime before acknowledging us. There was almost no information about how the pool and spa facilities work so my husband and I didn't quite know where we were going, whether we should take our towels, etc. The pool area is very basic but that was clear to us when we booked. These things aren't the end of the world but it makes for a much more pleasant stay if staff are forthcoming and welcoming of questions. The restaurant was very accommodating to my celiac disease but the food wasn't outstanding.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything was provided to make our stay relaxing and pleasant. Lovely breakfast. Very friendly staff.
4.0 Okay
Pros: The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.food was really lovely, both dinner and breakfast.
Cons: Towels given to us for pool were worse than floor towels, very small and one had holes in! We had a ground floor room near reception and it was very noisy, vans at midnight outside room opening and shutting doors and staff walking to and from staff room (our doors were very close) and hoover on at 8am on Sunday morning! The restaurant was a bit soulless, felt like a make shift restaurant, with a few tables set up in a conference room.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Food was lovely. Hotel was beautiful. Had afternoon tea dinner that evening and breakfast the next day.
Cons: Incorrect advertising. Photos shown for a superior double which we booked actually show the honeymoon suite which isn’t what we got. Our room was lovely but not what we booked and couldn’t upgrade as it was already booked.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Loved the staff, all amazing, beautiful hotel, wonderful location and everyone is very accommodating. Can’t wait to return.
Cons: -
7.3 Good
Pros: The hotel location is beautiful. Old and charming with slanted floors but modern bathrooms. Staff were second to none , very polite and helpful at all times.
Cons: We brought a small child with us and the swimming pool that is located in the grounds of the hotel di dnot allow children in the pool.
5.6 Okay
Pros: Cost of room was very reasonable and food was excellent. Loved the idea of real coffee in the rooms
Cons: Central heating in room weas poor and the cups for tea/coffee had already been used but had went un noticed.Trying to get someone to serve you at the bar was not always convenient

Pros: Room 1 is outstanding! Very spacious and comfortable with loads of character
Cons: Everything perfect except the stale bread-roll with the evening meal!!

Pros: Warm comfortable room, excellent breakfast and a large, filling evening meal. Very convenient location for Colchester and east Essex.
Cons: The only thing we missed was a hair-dryer in our room.
7.7 Good
Pros: Large comfortable room huge bed and very clean
Cons: Tv could be upgraded units are small and ood selection of channels is also poor
7.2 Good
Pros: Peace and quiet, staff were very helpful
Cons:
6.0 Good
Pros: lovely decor - beautiful rooms and great service
Cons: the heating was a bit hit and miss - and went off at various times making it quite cold - we were in a room (8) with 3 outside walls, so it was freezing mid afternoon!
6.4 Good
Pros: The interior of the hotel was impressive and the bed extremely comfortable
Cons: Swimming pool too far away and near what appeared to be industrial units
5.6 Okay
Pros: breakfast
Cons:
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing fitness facilities. Great gym and a huge pool. Not at all busy either. The gym staff were the friendliest I have ever met, were fab. Hotel staff slightly more harried but very helpful and friendly too. The rooms were fantastic- spacious, huge bed with duvet and crisp linen. Flat screen TV with built in DVD player won my boyfriend's approval!
Cons: Breakfast on weekdays is only 7-9am. Bit irritatingly early if you are there for leisure

7.0 Good
Pros: The breakfast was pleasant.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The apartment was situated in the sports complex alongside an impressive beautiful old hotel in lovely grounds. The apartment was comfortable and very clean, with spacious bedrooms. We had a very good meal in the restaurant of the hotel. It was nice to get away from the large hotel-chain and be in a unique establishment. We didn’t get a chance to try out any of the facilities on offer sadly! After our stay I saw a note saying free brunch on Saturdays in the sports complex to staying guests - this Was not conveyed to us!
Cons: I scored low on location this is only due to the fact our stay was meant to be in Chelmsford so we could walk to our destinations around the cathedral - our paid for booking was cancelled hours before arrival so we were offered this location which was 16 miles out of Chelmsford- hence our dissatisfaction! And of course at this stage our choice was slim. There was a musty type of smell in the apartment. When you drew the curtains back or opened the windows in the morning there was a keep fit group all around the ground floor apartment.

Pros: Spacious and really helpful staff
Cons: Bathroom sink! And cold shower!

Pros: Prested Hall Apartments: Beautiful location in Feering, just off A12 however far enough away not to be disturbed by traffic noise. Set in beautiful grounds - the history of the hotel is fascinating. So much to do: sports, spa, swimming pool, walks, visiting local places of interest including National Trust properties. All staff really lovely, helpful and courteous. Very clean, well equipped apartment - would be good for a self-catering break. Shower good, big fluffy towels and the most enormous pillows. If in apartments and have breakfast inluded can have brunch on Sunday from 10.00 - 15.00 in the bistro - which is superb for a lazy, hazy start to your day.

Pros: we loved the grounds that the venue was set in.
Cons: we unfortunately we not allowed to have breakfast! we understood there was a wedding party breakfast...as we had attended the wedding!!! but were very very disappointed that there was no offer of breakfast at all to those that were not of that gathering! It would put us off staying there again as we read in the welcome book that breakfast was available from 8am. we had to leave early and find somewhere to get our breakfast on the way home from what had been a lovely stay and a fabulous wedding1
