Good location, lots of amenities close by.
Mosquito problem, we did not have the windows open and each morning we woke up with more bites and more mosquitos around the room. It was very warm in the room but we did not want to open the window for fear of more mosquitos coming in.
Noice from building next door started 6 am
Nice big room with lots of storage space and cupboards. Bunk bed a little rickety but fine. Facilities very basic - bare minimum in kitchen: 1 pot 1 pan 2 plates 2 small coffee cups 1 tea mug 1 bowl and 2 x cutlery sets. No sharp knife or bottle opener or dishcloth. Also no salt or pepper. Bathroom lacked hooks for towels but was otherwise fine. Our room had a small communal outdoor area which could've been nice but only consisted of a dirty gutter which was unfortunately a haven for mosquitoes meaning we had to keep the window/door closed so it heated up quickly and got quite stuffy. The walls were not clean and were covered in splat mosquitoes and stains - even some blood smears and loads of shoe marks from the ceilings to the walls from countless bug assassination attempts. Rest of the apartment was clean but the marks everywhere were quite gross. It was still a good place to stay though - nice location and friendly staff and convenient Having a lift in the building.
The room was clean and functional.
Unfortunately, I woke up after the first night with a lot of bites, and hoped they weren't bedbugs. Later in the day they started to itch. I didn't see anything on the mattress, etc., so I stayed that night as planned. I woke up with many more bites, probably around 30 in all, mostly on my arms and legs. I informed the staff who were very professional, but dubious. There were no signs of bedbugs, but these were not mosquito bites, and even the chemist saw them and said they were bedbug bites. The hostel didn't have any other rooms available, but offered to refund my unused nights if I wanted to leave. I found another place to stay and they promised they would process the refund. I have had no other bites since leaving the hostel. I expect this was just bad luck and bad timing, hopefully not a true infestation. But it made my stay in Ghent less enjoyable for sure.
Air conditioner would of great help
