8.3 Excellent
Pros: the location is close to tram station, walkable distance from shopping / dinning areas. A lot of good small restaurants in the streets around. Host is nice and speak english. He helped store our luggage after check out. Self-help kitchen available. Nice rooftop. Clean shower room. Fun decoration.
Cons: It would be an unrest night when someone snores a lot at night time/ turn on the light when everybody is sleeping (but one can pick single room to avoid this)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Clean and clear shower room, no service towel, you could buy ,vender matchine.
Cons: Walking is difficult for me° , location is safe but not quite competitive the others
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hostel is decorated beautifully and there are many areas you can relax in outside of your room. I had the private room and though small (2 tatami) it was a good size for me. The futon was comfortable and though I was initially concerned about the pillow, I had a good sleep.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: This is the highest point at kumamoto city where you can even see mount Aso. Surrounded by 7 or more temples and one cemetery, it has a zen feeling. Lady boss is very hospitable with grear welcome snack selection. It is comfortable for a 130 years old house. Sparkling clean. A very good experience
7.9 Good
Pros: This accommodation is in the grounds of a beautiful temple in Kumamoto, high on a hill. The accommodation is very traditional, with beautiful sliding paper panels, tatami mats and futons. The staff were very friendly, and parking was easy. It was quite an experience to be in the quiet temple grounds after everyone else had left.
Cons: There was only one shared bathroom for all the guests, which was fine, but might be difficult for those who weren't expecting it. Be aware that the accommodation is fairly sparse: basically just your room, and a common lounge area downstairs.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Brilliant hosts.
Cons: What’s not to like?
8.8 Excellent
Pros: breakfast was wonderful. warm and friendly hosts.interesting history and location is a must. very unique opportunity
Cons: better instructions needed on how to get there by car
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely old house, immaculately clean with lots of character. Absolutely unique location beside, practically in, the city's most famous shrine. Lovely breakfast too. Best place we stayed in a month. We had a car (10 mins to centre - cheap parking there) and its about a 30 minute walk to the castle, which is interesting because of all the temples, past the excellent city museum and castle park. Train is 5 mins down steps.
Cons: Sign posting near the temple carpark to say you've arrived would useful, as its not clear the car park actually belongs to the temple and that you walk through the temple to the house!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Homey and host was very friendly. The breakfast is extraordinary.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The host, Yokosan and her husband are very good. They taking a very good care of us. It's beyond my expectation. I never find any host better than this before.
Cons: A little thing, the location near by the temple and far for walk to the tram/bus station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The house was beautiful and fitted in perfectly with the temple area it was located in. The owners were very helpful and the breakfast was exquisite. We would highly recommend this inn to others who want to experience something a little different from the usual hotel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is unique for living in historical Kumamoto. On the doorstep of Honmyoji temple, with amazing views. Walking down the steps of the neighbourhood at night is magical. The owners are a genuine, kind and welcoming couple.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Best place we stayed so far! The minshuku is beautiful and clean, with view on a temple. The traditionnal japanese room was lovely and confortable. The host are honest nice and helpful, although is easier to comunicate if you speak a little bit of japanese.

Pros: Good location clean and comfortable
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staff were exceptionally polite and professional. When I asked the way to the nearby park, they even gave me the free entrance cards. Also for us (2 ADULT AND 1 2YO KID),we added a futon. Because the tatami area is connect with the bed area. So adding a futon simply give us huge space to sleep and I didn't need to worry my son falling down from the bed. They even have free spring (both public ones and family one).
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The beds and the bathroom facilities were excellent. The warm welcome and help with our taxi.
Cons: There was no restaurant in the hotel so even getting breakfast was a real problem. It is located right under the Kumamoto airport flight path so we had planes going over all the time.

Pros: It is a very convenient ryokan. Really nothing to complain about, ultra clean, very nice hosts always available. And the japanese breakfast was really good.
Cons: Climbing the steep stairs with a heavy luggage was quite tough. It is also a little bit far from the city center by walking
9.6 Excellent
Pros: breakfast is really worth the 700 yen, if I could’ve added dinner I would do that too. Owner is very welcoming, speaks English well and everything is clean. It is accessable by car but harder if you are taking public transit. There’s not many stores around either as its in a local residencial area.
Cons: no shower cap and comb
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is well situated at 5 minutes from Shin-Suizenji station. The room is clean, very light and quiet. The breakfast was so delicious ans the owners so kind!
Cons: Nothing to dislike!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We were allocated a larger room than originally booked as the large room was free so we appreciated the additional space. The en-suite facilities were accessed off our entry corridor. The Japanese breakfast was exceptionally tasty and beautifully presented.
Cons: The location is a little way out of the central town area but easily reached by the efficient tram system.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Simple but confortable ryokan, the owner was very king and the breakfast very good. Only negative point, the wifi was not working.

Cons: Nil
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Hosts speak English and are friendly. Breakfast was tasty. Parking albeit not free is conveniently round the corner.
Cons: I wrongly assumed that ryokan certainly is equipped with onsen bath so was a tad disappointed to find out that it was not available.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast, traditional Japanese style room with comfortable and clean sheets/futons. In a nice area of kumamoto with plenty of izakaya nearby!

Hotel The Gate Kumamoto - Kumamoto - Building
8
8.7 Excellent (2,113 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at HOTEL THE GATE KUMAMOTO - Hostel in Kumamoto, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Kumamoto Castle and Kumamoto Station Tourist Information Center. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Second time I stayed here. Everything still sparkling new and well maintained. Only thing is that it's one big hall with all the beds, so we got kept up one night by a very loud snorer. It can also be noisy when people walk past your bed, so bring ear plugs. Overall, good value for money given other options in kumamoto are quite expensive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Hotel the gate is an amazing hostel - the layout of the building and the bunk beds made it feel like a luxurious hotel. Especially when first walking the reception and the bar! Everything was well organized with labels in multiple languages, a large locker to store valuables and attentive staff ready to help! Location wise it’s literally across the street from the station so it couldn’t be more convenient!
Cons: Because it is, after all, a hostel there can be some noise from other residents (all the bunk beds, while separated by walls and long curtains, are essentially all in one huge room) but we got lucky with considerate neighbors!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: kind staff clean and quiet room nice washroom close to bus and JR station
Cons: nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect: location, rooms, facilities, design of the whole place.
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location - directly opposite the train station. Means it’s a 20 mins walk into the heart of the city or a short tram ride away. Rooms were large. Beds comfortable. Lockers allocated to secure belongings. Bathrooms were large with plenty of showers, sinks and toilets.
Cons: Nothing at all.

Pros: large bed and room size for a family
Cons: there aren’t many choices for dinner arround
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Our stay in this hotel was excellent. The room was comfortable and very reasonably prices. A nice breakfast was included in the price. Location is also convenient: along the road between Kumamoto and the national parc Aso.
Cons: Nothing that we didn't like. It was one of the better value for money that we had in Japan.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Room was big and clean, staff friendly, breakfast good, even with toast and jam.
Cons: -
10.0 Excellent
Pros: we stay here to visit mount Aso, which is consider near to drive to and for us to choose between convenience and location. the hotel seems a little aged from the outside but i can see them putting effort to modernize the look, the inside feels new and clean. the car park is huge and never had to problem even return late to hotel. hotel stuff is very nice and friendly esp this lady (林 綾香) that help us check in, we really appreciate her help in getting us blankets. Rooms are spacious and clean, definitely one of best within the area (defination of cleaniness is high). there is coin laundry which is in good functioning condition and vending machine as well. Sushi restaurant and convenience store is near by driving, definitly will stay again in future!
Cons: none!
6.3 Good
Pros: 15 to 20 mins to Kumamoto Airport by taxi. It was just under 2000 yen.
Cons: The room was small. There weren't many restaurants near the hotel. Restaurants near the train station were 15 to 20 mins walk.

Featured amenities include a 24-hour business center, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage. Self parking (subject to charges) is available onsite.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is fantastic about this hotel.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The room was good and had everything we needed. We were only there one night so can't really judge the hotel facilities. The castle was still closed and we were there to watch rugby. Would have been good to explore more. Quite location.
Cons: The entrance looks a little tired compared to the inside of the hotel.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is really beautiful and you can see the castle really closely. The staff is really nice. The room is really comfortable.
Cons: The only minus point in my opinion is that there is no bus stop near the hotel. There is one not really far but if you carry a lot of luggage, it could be a hassle.
6.3 Good
Pros: Location was quite good although still a reasonable walk into town, the room was OK but not great, on arrival we asked to get a room with a view of the Castle but the reception staff didn't seem to be able to deal with this request, not because the hotel was busy but because a room had already been allocated and they couldn't be bothered to change the room.
Cons: Generally, not a great hotel.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: 1. Location, Perfect place morning run around Kumamoto Castle. Superb view of sunset. 2. Room 3. Staff, pleasant service 4. Good price
Cons: 1. Breakfast
5.8 Okay
Pros: It is quiet
Cons: Very disappointed, after confirming the price of the reservation when we arrived, the hotel increased it when we checked out. After the earthquake of 2016 the castle was severely damaged, and is still in reconstruction. There is very few difference between the two sides but the price. The rooms are a little bit old fashion
7.0 Good
Pros: The room was bigger than most rooms in japanese hotels are. The hotel is as close to the castle as you could be.
Cons: The hotel lacks character. It's pretty big, but there is no atmosphere. I picked it because of the proximity to the castle. - unfortunately the castle is under construction and closed most of the time because of the earthquake that hit it a couple of years ago. :(

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Great host, great place to stay. Walk into town didn't bother us at all. Recommended.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The guy at the reception was super-helpul and saved us with the bus schedule for the kumowara onsen. Also, we had some nice chats in the common room. The location is good and only 15 mins walk to train station.
Cons: The check in only after 3pm surprised us (we didn't read the rules carefully) but it was great that we were able to leave our bags and go explore town! The position of the female shower is a bit awkward, but not too bad.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hospitality was great. When we checked-in we got a welcome drink and they explained to us where to find the next supermarket and where to go for delicious Ramen (or other dishes).
5.4 Okay
Pros: No breakfast offered.
Cons: Felt more like a hostel than a Ryoken. Owner frequently reminded us that we had to be out by 1000 in order for him to do cleaning. Overpriced for what it was.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Right at my check in I got a refreshing drink and a colorful presentation about the area ! :)))
7.9 Good
Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff. A Japanese experience at a very reasonable price.
6.7 Good
Pros: You can enjoy a stay at traditional Japanese tatami house. A good garden view in front of out room door.
Cons: Location is bit far, about 1.5km from JR Kumamoto Station. It's traditional tatami-matted house, hence, sound proof is bad. After 11pm, all doors & windows ate lock-up. Common area lights all switched off, you can only stay in your room. Check in only 3-9pm.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It is really local home and you spent your night on tatami. Also the staff organize dinner gathering in the hostel once in a while in which you can enjoy local family food with other guests.
Cons: The guesthouse is a bit far from the Kumamoto station.
7.5 Good
Pros: the location is good & and the staff is friendly & helpful.
Cons: the soundproofing is bad
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Especially friendly young host giving good detailed information about services near the place. Among them there is a great onsen with proper löylysauna, massage (not in the evening though) and lot of other things. This hostel is good value for the reasonable price.

Cons: Location
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The location of the hotel is very convenient to transport and shopping & dining.
Cons: The room was a little small. (This is normal in Japan)
7.1 Good
Pros: Good and convenient location. It has the same standard as other Dormy Inn where we have stayed in the past - like the public bath, the free noodle at night time.
Cons: Room is simply too small and the price was too high even as I booked a month in advance - may be it was a Saturday night price. Public baht was a bit busy with so many people using it.

Pros: Modern decorated rooms with two very good single beds. good shower. The room also features a kettle and small refrigerator. Good and helpful staff even though English is not spoken so much. Free Laundry on the ground floor. The room will be good for couples or bussiness travelers. Since the hotel does not have rooms with conecting doors, they made sure our two rooms are right next to the other.

Richmond Hotel Kumamoto Shinshigai - Kumamoto - Lobby
15
8.4 Excellent (1,580 reviews)

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very convenient location, good facilities, very clean.
Cons: Bed against the wall!
6.0 Good
Pros: The room was slightly larger than some Japanese hotels. 2 windows. Good Wi-Fi. Place to store luggage. Near bus station. Near lots of shops & restaurants.
Cons: No safe. No comfy chair, no English TV channels, noisy air conditioning. Stained mattress protector. Hard bed. Breakfast choice very limited.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location and staff were approachable and helpful.
Cons: Room lighting and switches/sockets location could be improved.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Didn't try Breakfast but the hotel is right in the city centre so lots of local cafes easily accessible. Nearby to the Tram stop so easy to get from the railway station to the hotel. Tram fare costs 170Y
Cons: Room was a little small but was fine.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location was excellent. Very close to tram stop and in a covered shopping arcade close to restaurants, coffee shops etc. Deluxe double room had a queen bed. Excellent shower , separate to basins and toilet. Modern facilities.Very clean. Very friendly staff.
Cons: No safe in the room. Very few hangers in the closet. The pillows are hard.
6.3 Good
Pros: If arriving from Fukuoka Airport, there is a bus that runs from Fukuoka Airport to Sakura Machi Bus Terminal, which is the last stop. When you get off the bus, you can walk to your left to the end of the terminal, then turn left again and walk straight down to Richmond Hotel which is a 5 minute or so walk. Don't use Google maps on your phone as it takes you out the long way! The bus depot is attached to a Mall, and if it is open you can walk straight through the Mall and out towards Richmond Hotel. The location is great - right in the middle of everything, shops and restaurants everywhere. McDonalds and 7-Eleven is a couple of minutes walk from the Hotel. If doing domestic flights you can fly in/out of Kumamoto Airport which is only 20km out from the city centre.
Cons: We had a standard non-smoking double room. It is small and we felt was not value for money! We were there for the rugby world cup and we understand prices were probably premium for the rooms, but we would not pay that price again for this place! There are plenty of choices in the same location so do your homework.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: High floor room gave us a good view to Sakura Machi shopping centre. Excellent service from staff!
Cons: Mattress was a little firm but that’s down to personal opinion.
K2 Hotel Shimotori - Kumamoto - Building
16
8.4 Excellent (1,095 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Shimotori Shopping Arcade near the intersection of Shimo and Ginza streets, this hotel features spacious guest rooms emphasizing rest.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location couldn’t be better!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice location, in the middle of shopping district
Cons: Very small box for valuables, things like laptop won't fit in.
6.7 Good
Pros: It's pretty much in a covered shopping area so plenty of shops and restaurants in the area. Clean, good shower rooms. Check in was easy, taken up to the room for a tour. There was a little personalised origami on the bedside locker. Close to the tram.
Cons: Quite expensive for what it was - an overnight capsule hotel with minimal facilities. Not that comfortable and I could hear shouting and nightlife from the street outside even in a sealed room with no windows. Probably a surge due to Rugby fans in the area at the time so I didn't have much choice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, comfortable, clean, great price. Nice capsule style dorm with private beds
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place to stay in the center of Kumamoto. Close to a tramway stop. The "capsules" are very comfortable, big enough to get all your stuff with you and nicely equipped for such little space. Bathrooms and toilet were clean. There is a woman only floor with a code to access it which makes it very safe as well.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything is great (staff , location, private, shower room , powder room , clean, bed )
9.2 Excellent
Pros: This is a capsule hotel right in the centre of Kumamoto. The staff were really helpful and friendly - they didn’t speak English but went out of their way to communicate using translation apps which were great! The hotel is very clean and organised. The area around the hotel is lively - shops, restaurants etc open pretty much all day, it was very busy when we were there (but maybe because the rugby was on!). We went to a really good sushi restaurant nearby called Sushi Naniwa which I would highly recommend!
Cons: The only thing I missed compared to other capsule hotels is the relatively small space for locking/keeping personal items. But I guess most people only come with a small amount of stuff
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice space , great location and staff , clear everything was great .you can feel private.
Cons: The shower and powder room is near the living room , so it is a little bit noise when the other people using it.

7.5 Good
Pros: Big room. Good location
Cons: Onsen simple and small
7.5 Good
Pros: Staff were helpful. Price was good!
Cons: Location was OK but not brilliant without a car
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Great location, beaufiful hotel, quite a way of center but a very nice and quiet neighborhood. A stone throw away to a gorgeous japanese garden !
Cons: Beautiful japanese style hotel but not soundproof at all. Thank god others guest were not too noisy but they do give you old school type of japanese wooden shoes (excuse me for the lack of a better word) and you will hear every step of every guest walking in the hall in a very loud way. Very annoying. Would still go back though, and easily recommend it to anyone !

Pros: Good location
8.0 Excellent
Pros: We had the Kumamon room since my husband likes it. It was cute but I don't think I would pay the extra if you're not a huge fan (not only my opinion, hubby agrees). The room was normal otherwise, nice size to have big luggage open without it being too cramped. The area was nice, there were many restaurants near and boulevards but you should take the street train for the experience. Walk took ~25mins with luggage but the street isn't too interesting unlike the train :)
Cons: The bed was kind of hard and some of the pillows too
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Nice and comfy bed with all the amenities you need. Parking was a little unclear outside but a receptionist came out to help us park in an associated place which was very helpful.

Pros: Great location next to the castle and very central, decent breakfast and friendly service. Fair amount of English spoken.
