Great location, right on the water. Very friendly and welcoming hosts. Excellent food in the on site restaurant. Clean, spacious room, well laid out. Beautiful bathroom as well. The most comfortable bed we had during our whole trip too!
excellent food . location long way from anything ,
the road to get there
The best thing about this place is the access to a beautiful natural pool just steps away from your room. There were always happy blue fish, some coral and some starfish too. They're not shy, so you can just get in and check them out every day. The two local people that work there are super sweet, it's a shame they were off on the day we arrived, so couldn't enjoy their presence for long enough.
When greeted by the owners, since staff was off that day, I was told "Welcome guys, there are a couple of cold beers for you in the mini bar". Wouldn't you suppose those are complimentary? I did. Booking.com says "tropical breakfast" included. I rocked up to the restaurant and find a table with a breakfast that looks like something you'd find at a cheap Gold Coast backpackers hostel: a couple of options of cereal, yoghurt and milk, two slices of toast. There was a plate of fresh papaya, which I suppose justify the "tropical" part of the breakfast. No fresh (or bottled) juices of any kind. Seeing that, I asked Damien if he had some eggs or omelete. He mumbled something about "this is the cold breakfast, then there are the cooked things". And threw a couple of dry fried eggs on top of some soggy toast and several rashers of burnt bacon on the side. I regret not having a photo. Only when checking out I discovered (there was no breakfast menu to make that more transparent) that each of those plates of eggs on toast were rated at almost twenty dollars, which, to be fair, were finally taken off the bill, not without a ridiculous discussion which pretty much ended on the owner mocking me for my english, which is certainly better than his, even though it's his first language. When I said "I didn't get that" about the hidden message that he was going to charge us extra for the eggs, he, later, after listening to me talk, said "Oh, sorry, I didn't get that, can you repeat?". The "cold beers in the fridge for you guys" were still charged. Doesn't surprise me that they're selling the place, their heart isn't in it. You can tell by the fact that, even though they were empty before and after, they didn't care to check that the hot water was working. Also, the area is super dead, there are like 5 or 6 properties in along and bumpy road.
The location is beautiful, the sunsets stunning, the food lovely, the hammock super comfy, the owners (Sally and Damien) and the staff are all really friendly and helpful. Ripples has a kayak, bikes and snorkelling gear (including reef shoes) that you can borrow free of charge, which really appealed to me. Had a lovely time kayaking along the coast and Damien helped me get the kayak in and out past the reef. The snorkelling is right on the doorstep and the when the sea’s not too rough you can go out a bit further (rather than stay in the hotel’s coral pool) – lots of fish! The area is really quiet and peaceful and I felt very safe, including going running on the gravel road just outside. Sally also very helpfully informed me about the Air Vanuatu domestic luggage restrictions (10KG!) which I hadn’t realised, and they then stored my bag for me while I went to Tanna and met me in Port Vila with it when I was passing through for no extra charge! (Should have bought Damien and Rod a drink when they came with my bag but was a bit too sleep deprived from swaying treehouse nights on Tanna to think straight! But if you’re reading this – thanks again!) Excellent place to relax for a few days!
A few mosquitos around (as expected). Not really any complaints. Depending on what you’re doing on Efate it might be a bit out of the way (around 30-40 minutes from Port Vila with car) – as a solo traveller I thought it was perfect for 3 nights but it would maybe have been a bit small to stay for much longer by myself.
Our hosts were fantastic and we couldn’t recommend it enough! Great spot to relax and get away from it all. We will be back!
