When you stay at Roça Santo António Ecolodge Hotel in Sao Tome Island, you'll be near the beach and 15 minutes by car from Estadio Nacional 12 de Julho. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Serene environment Nice pool Friendly staff Good breakfast
Cons: No proper English attendant. But they tried to communicate.
Pros: Nice place, friendly servers who helped when one friend was ill by fetching some pain killers from the pharmacy. The setting is pretty and the pool was clean and pleasant.
Cons: We had major difficulties communicating before arriving in an effort to do a prepayment. The owner was on holiday and didnt respond to several requests to provide the transfer details which would have saved much time and trouble since there are no card facilities or functioning ATM's on the island. One of our group found their bed sheets to be soiled when we checked in and the cleanliness of the resort could be considerably improved all round.
Pros: Nice setting, although the nearby cocoa worker quarters were a bit noisy at night and early mornings
Cons: Main problem is that electricity is not stable. Some brown outs, adds to the upcountry atmosphere, but causes internet problems
Pros: We stayed 5 nights at Roça Santo António after a 2-night stay at a city hostel. After traveling the whole island of São Tomé, we're sure to have made the perfect choice. The location is great. 20-25 min away from the city of São Tomé. 10 more, maybe, from the airport. From there you can easily travel each day either to North or South as we did. After leaving the N2 you get to do 200m of dirt road. Then you get to this brand new tastefully designed place surrounded by green. There is beautiful main building with a terrace facing the swimming pool and on the opposite side, also facing the pool, a row of 5 rooms. We've stayed in one of those. It was a very spacious room. Spotlessly cleaned everyday. Staff was sweetly friendly, always with a smile and with a genuine will to please. We had dinner 4 evenings. It was really practical not say very enjoyable to relax at the terrace, have a couple of beers and experiment either national or more Portuguese based cuisine. Cachupa was great! Breakfast is also served in the terrace. Plentiful and varied. Great natural juices. I'm sure when we go back to São Tomé we'll stay in Roça de Santo António again. Thank you to all the staff who made us feel so comfortable, for all the details and help, specially the manager Ângela, who's making sure to provide the best service in São Tomé.
Pros: The facilities are excellent, the staff very friendly, the property very picturesque, and the barman and chef very personable and talented.
Cons: This is almost a brand new eco lodge. Unfortunately, almost nothing works. The property was without water for most of the time that we were here; I managed one shower in three days. The electricity was out for a good deal of the time, and the pool wasn't functional because of this (and the lack of water, I assume). The veranda of the cottages lacked furniture, so we had to sit on the floor; likewise no furniture around the pool. The nearest beach is a hilly 4km walk away.
Pros: Very attentive and friendly management. The large pool is a definite plus. Excellent food, rich breakfast, super wines. Terrace restaurant open till late. The place is quite new and already they have ironed out most of the glitches. Staff training has already been very effective and they obviously strive to react to customer input. Thus, hopefully, Paypal or other means of payment will be established soon. Very stylish and high quality interiors in the new annex. Pricing is adequate for local circumstances. English spoken at reception and management. Secluded location makes for nice walks into the countryside behind the property.
Cons: nothing at all
Pros: The bed linen was very nice and the bed was comfortable. The modern room design looked great and the verandah was a pleasant place to sit. The dinner menu was very limited but quite tasty and definitely over-priced for pretty basic home-cooking.
Cons: There were plenty of staff around and some of them were friendly but they were totally disorganised so service was poor. Breakfast selection was poor and covered in fruit flies (looked nothing like the pictures). Politely asking for cutlery, crockery, coffee, bread, etc was met with apparent indifference until another member of staff appeared. The room was very nice but (bizarrely) had an open plan toilet/shower room. The workers accommodation next door was pretty noisy and there was a lot of gardening/construction work going on around the pool one day.
When you stay at Praia Inhame Eco-Lodge in Sao Tome Island, you'll be on the beach and 15 minutes by foot from Ilheu das Rolas Beach. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
Cons: We booked the mangrove-trip and they charged EUR 30 for the transport for two people although the listed price for two is EUR 20. The guy behind the reception desk argued that their own price list is not correct!!
Pros: Clise to the ocean and quiet
Pros: All the environment is great, bungalows are well built giving privacy to the hosts. Friendly staff. Would stay here again for the relaxed atmosphere and great beach (and beaches nearby).
Cons: Buffet is overpriced and when it's decided dinner is buffet there's no other option.
Pros: Near a beautiful beach and the Ilha das Rolas to see the Equator line
Cons: Staff really did lack professionalism at times forcing us to pay €40 per person for the Christmas dinner that we did not want! Breakfast was the stingiest portion ever - cold sliced pieces of omelette and all types of insects attacking fruit despite breakfast attendant standing there! Rats under ecolodges but can’t come in (don’t worry!) Dilapidated route for arrival - would one not expect a better tarmac road for a place like this making so much money on a daily baiss? Or are we aiming to preserve the « ecofeel »? Ilha das Rolas boat took ages to collect us from island despite giving them a fixed time!
Pros: The place is beautiful. The beach is amazing, hot water and nobody near you. The people are kind.
Cons: The road to get there. Can somebody fix it?
Pros: Nice room/house with seaview and direct access to a nice hotel beach. Simple but good food (breakfast and dinner) and very friendly stuff.
Pros: Bungalows are nice and clean, in front of the beach. Hotel Restaurant facilities are nice and food also.
Cons: Road access is terrible. Everyone should be ashamed about how these resorts don’t care about that. Room price and restaurant is overpriced l, but is all around São Tomé
Pros: Really nice staff, really nice food. House was a litle bit hot.
Pros: The beach.
Cons: Room was too hot, no air conditioning. The staff could have been nicer.
Pros: Beautiful chalet, in palm gardens right on the beach. Stunning place with good food and fairly good service.
You'll be centrally located in Caue Ilheu Das Rolas with a stay at Pestana Equador, minutes from Ilheu das Rolas Beach. Featured amenities include a 24-hour front desk, laundry facilities, and a library. Planning an event in Caue Ilheu Das Rolas? This hotel features 1571 square feet (146 square meters) of event facilities. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge at scheduled times.
Pros: The tiny Ilhéu das Rolas (or "Islet of the Doves") is gorgeous and full of beautiful spots, including a few of the country's best beaches and diving locations. This is the memory that will stay with you the longest, together with the general friendliness of the locals. The Pestana Equador is blessed with this stunning location and provides a series of facilities that allow you to enjoy them, including the rental of boats, snorkelling and diving equipment, etc., along with just about the biggest swimming pool on the West Coast of Africa.
Cons: The bedrooms and the majority of facilities are a bit run down: I would not describe the bathroom in our suíte, for example, as fit for a 4-star hotel that charges 250 euros a night. The bedrooms, while reasonably roomy, are very basic; and the buffet meals are not very varied or creative. Worst of all: drinks are not included in the full pension, and anything with alcohol will cost more than in Europe.
Pros: Friendly staff
Cons: A little too expensive for the facilities provided. You need to pay the boat to get there
Pros: Wonderful location with a nice beach. Our spacious chalet was very clean and we had a nice seabird. The food was very good as well - especially the breakfast. Huge saltwater pool for people who didn’t like the beautiful beach.
Cons: The rooms were a little bit dark - mine issue only
Pros: Wonderful location.
Cons: It is the ONLY place to stay on the island therefore has a captive market and had the feeling whole place was a little "tired"
Pros: The position, the wild atmosphere of the Island, the kindness of the staff and the availability to explain to the tourists every single corner of the island
Cons: The whole hotel was one large building site. A real shame they did not shut down the place to do this works, or at least schedule them in low season.
Pros: The location is perfect. Ilheu das Rolas is really nice. The swimming pool is a plus in this hotel. Excellent seafront view and you can enjoy your night swim. The complimentary walking tour was very nice. Praia Cafe is one of my favourites in the island.
Cons: Pestana needs a serious refurbishment. It is a great property but it's old and you can see it. From the reception to the restaurant. Small but important details like the paint on the walls, the armchairs and sofas looking old and wasted, etc. The quality of food is medium. Entertainment was very poor. There's a lot of room for improvement. Please step up your game.
Pros: Placed in a paradisiac location, very quiet and relaxing, with views on the main island and starting point for walks through the equatorial forest. The whole resort is clean and quite well maintained, with a nice and big pool. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, cleaned every day. The personnel is nice and always smiling. Food at the restaurant is excellent and there are many choices, for all tastes.
Cons: In our room the air conditioning device was dropping from above the bathroom door and on the floor there was always a towel to absorb the water. Problem is this sweat produced by the machine was also trickling inside the wall and during the first night was wetting all the clothes we had in that place. English will not help to communicate with the personnel, I would suggest Spanish or French. The drinks at the restaurant seemed overpriced to me; a local beer is 3 euros, the same beer that is 1 euro or less in the city. All in all, I would say lower prices would be more suitable for what is offered.
Pros: The peace and quiet. Having a island to roam on.
Cons: Lack of English speaking staff.
Pros: Amazing views
Cons: The majority of staff seemed sullen. Also near impossible to be understood in English or French
Boasting a garden and bar, as well as a restaurant, N`Guembú Nature Resort is situated in Porto Alegre. The accommodation features evening entertainment and a 24-hour front desk. At the resort, each room is fitted with a patio with a garden view. At N`Guembú Nature Resort rooms have a wardrobe and a private bathroom. A continental breakfast is available each morning at the accommodation. N`Guembú Nature Resort offers a sun terrace. Hiking is among the activities that guests can enjoy near the resort. The nearest airport is São Tomé International Airport, 77 km from N`Guembú Nature Resort.
Pros: Nice clean airy cabins. Very comfortable bed. Beautiful beaches.
Cons: No breakfast included which was disappointing. Resteraunt was ok. Staff was not the best.
Pros: The owner was helpful and staff was nice. Beach is beautiful and restaurant area has a great view. Very quiet and peaceful
Cons: Rooms were very basic and although clean, a few stains.
Pros: The lodge is in a beautiful location with amazing views.
Cons: We don’t speak Portuguese so it was very difficult communicating with the staff at the lodge. There were two men, one younger and one cook. They were very kind but it was hard to get anything done because of the language barrier. This obviously was no one’s fault but it would be nice if they had someone there who spoke English or French.
Pros: The location is gorgeous
Cons: For beach bungalows, they feel too closed up. Also, w When I took a shower, I flooded the bathroom because the shower surround is not properly sealed and the shower floor is not properly level. We had to move the bed to another wall of the bedroom wall because the air conditioning unit was blowing cold air straight to our heads when we were trying to sleep.
Pros: The beach and friendly staff.
Cons: One of the rooms had no air conditioning!
Pros: Location is superb, although arriving there is somehow tricky if you don't like bumpy roads. Personnel is helpful and the bungalow was clean. The beach at 1 minute walking downstairs from the bungalow was simply awesome. A bit overpriced for what we found in the rest of the island, but definitively a great experience.
Cons: The owner pushed me to pay in advance, many times disturbing me with constant messages not to forget it. The staff didn't know which is our appartment on the arrival, after half an hour they realized that we have payed for big house. At the paying promised me to give the receive on the next morning, but pretended to forget about it. Low level service for highly overpriced money.
Pros: Foods and views from restaurant is literally AWESOME. I had the life-most-delicious octopus salad there. Also there are many cute cats that you can feel comfortable while you eat. Also the place is very very very clean and neat. It is highly recommended to people who want to escape the crowds and noises.
Cons: There was no wifi in the room, only at the restaurant which is located on top of the hill. And the beach looks bit dangerous with rocks and had TOO MANY mosquitos around the beach. It was impossible to lay down and do tanning cuz of the mosquitos. However still im recommending this place to people who want to relax themselves with amazing cuisines from local chefs at the restaurant.
Situated in Porto Alegre, Jalé Ecolodge offers accommodation with seating area. A terrace with sea views is offered in all units. Guests at Jalé Ecolodge can enjoy a continental breakfast. The restaurant serves local dishes Snorkelling can be enjoyed nearby. São Tomé is 41 km from Jalé Ecolodge.
Pros: The property is located on a desert beach. Extremely quiet and resting we could only hear the waves. The property has only 3 bungalows located right on the beach. There's a restaurant managed by the 2 ladies who work at the property. The food is excellent and it must be ordered in advance. The nearest village is Porto Alegre, just 15m away (by car) but there aren't any suitable restaurants there. Located on the most beautiful side of the island although the beach is beautiful I do not recommend to have a swim here once the sea in rough with crossed sea currents. Just 5m away you have "Piscina Beach" very beautiful and totally safe for swim.
Cons: There isn't electricity so the property depends on a generator which is turned off at 10.00 p.m. which is rather short to power cellular phones and power banks.
Pros: Amazing location, the best staff and incredible invironment. Perfect place to relax and connect with nature. The food is good and the sea turtles program is amazing. Thanks to Mi and all the others for the warm welcome and friendliness! Pedro and Filipa
Cons: A fan or air con would be appreciated. There should also be more hours of electricity, from 5 to 9 pm is pretty limited to charge the mobile equipments.
Pros: Amazing location on beautiful beach that you basically have for yourself. Huts are very basic (no electricity after 21:00, warm water only if asked for), but reasonably clean. Be aware that you are exposed to the wild, which we found fantastic, but is not for those who get scared of insects, crabs, etc. Dinner is simple, but home cooked and tasty. The security guard arranged for a reasonably priced and very nice trip to Ilas de Rolas.
Cons: Mattress needs replacement and bathroom would benefit from renovation (shower). Reasonably clean, but don't expect hotel quality. It is all about the remote and wild experience after all.
Pros: The location is fantastic and I guess that's what you pay for as there are only 3 rooms so you almost have the place to yourself which is unique. However it doesn't seem to be so well run, in terms of price quality the chalets are quite basic and the bathroom was just about clean, there was some rubbish laying around the chalets. The sheets smelled a bit moldy. Breakfast was very good. We enjoyed it and the price would be ok if they truly use the tourist money (or a percentage) for conservation, somehow I doubt that a little though.
Cons: Price- quality. The chalets are a little run down. The place is in need of an overhaul and could be run a little better. The location is wonderful though.
Pros: The location is quiet, beautiful and romantic. The room was spacious, clean and very well situated.
Cons: No electrcity apart from in the loo.Rather expensive basic (but tasty) meal where the cook ushered us out as we ate our last mouthful so she could go home.Even though we asked,we were not awoken when the turtles came ashore on the beach. The beach is not really suitable for swimming. The guard in charge was very grumpy.
Pros: Both breakfast and dinner were very delicious, superb location right on the beach
Cons: The bungalows are struggling with the humidity so there is a musty smell..and also the bathroom is really rustic for that price. You basically pay for the location.
Pros: The room is right on the beach with a veranda to sit and enjoy the view. The beach was clean and we had the privilege of releasing baby turtles into the ocean - an experience we'll never forget.
Cons: The bathroom could have been cleaner and had a lot of ants. Compared with other places on the island the price is high and you get less for your money.
Pros: We had a great time here and we could really disconnect as the GSM signal is quite weak or non existent. We were prepared for what we would find but the first hours impression was still a shock. This is really not your “hipster pretentious ecolodge glam camping” sort of thing. This is the real thing. There is no warm water. There is electric power only few hours of the day. There is no IKEA furniture inside a tent everything you have available seems to have been sorted locally or re-used. The initial shock started to fade away when Maria called us early in the night to let us know about leather back turtle was getting ready to nest at the beach and was completely gone by next morning when o woke up at 6 am watching the sea waves from the bed and had the first cold shower looking at coconut trees outside. The bangalôs are located right at the beach where the sea turtles come to nest, actually there were 3 signed nests right by the bangalô window. There are limited hours of electric light available first because its generator powered and second because the bright lights and the generator noise can deter the shy animals to come to the beach to do their business. We managed to work around these times and we had no problem in keeping our devices, power banks and lanterns comfortably charged. If you stay only one night you won’t have the chance to fully enjoy the magic of the place and more likely will only notice its lacks and missing the opportunity to connect with the staff members and understand their efforts of planning ahead for your needs and keep you well fed. The food was abundant and delicious. Yes, it felt a bit overpriced but that’s what you pay for being in a remote place where people carry their stuff either walking or by motorbike. The place is distant from everything, we were not driving but we could easily find our ways walking around and discovered some great beaches.
Cons: Talking about local sourced and re using, the bed linen and towels could do with a bit of an upgrade. It’s one time investment with a big improvement in comfort. More information about the sea turtle protection program either online or at the site could be good. Specially online as we noticed not all the guests were sensitive about limiting their use of bright white lights and even passing by with the car lights at maximum asking where were the turtles.
Pros: Beautiful, empty beaches.
Cons: The mattress of the bed wasn't very comfortable.
Pros: To properly experience the location, chose this property. It is right on the Jale beach, perfectly placed between coco trees and next to the forest. The views and the surroundings are breathtaking; you exit directly on the wild beach and few steps away you can take a walk in the equatorial forest. The breakfast is simple, but very good, with homemade bread and papaya jam, fresh fruits and very good coffee. The location to have it is also amazing, right next to the ocean.
Cons: The communication with the property, before our stay and during our stay was quite poor. English is like non-existant, but Spanish or French are more useful. Anyway, we were told by the property we can use airport transfer for 10 euros per person, but nobody will actually take you for these money there. It is about 2,5 hours drive, the last hour on a very poor road and the last 3 kilometres on a 4 wheel drive road and we negotiated 50 euros for this drive (be very careful with this, too, as we spoke with one person the price, the driver changed at some point and at the destination we were requested 100 euros; we payed 70 in the end). About the sleeping place, if you are sensitive to wildlife and cannot stand spiders or lizards, don't go there. It's really normal to see a lizard on the walls inside, ants or bugs. Because of the hot and humid weather it's really warm inside during the nights; more netted windows would probably help to have more air and a more comfortable sleep. Also, it is stated the breakfast starts at 07:30, but at 08:00 we were told to come at 08:30.
Featuring a garden and bar, as well as a restaurant, Mionga is located in Santa Cruz. The accommodation provides room service and dry cleaning services for guests. At the guest house, every room is equipped with a balcony with a river view. With a private bathroom, rooms at Mionga also provide guests with a lake view. São Tomé is 41 km from the accommodation. The nearest airport is São Tomé International Airport, 46 km from Mionga.
Pros: The location is great.
Cons: Very small en the beds are not comfortable
Pros: The staff were really accommodating and nice. The food was superb. The place was basic but clean. Very honest people, they made us feel welcome from the beginning
Cons: At some times the water and electricity will shut down. The dinner was served very early for Western standards
Pros: Having read the previous reviews, I was sceptical when I arrived. However, this is a nice place to stay, set at a great location overlooking the sea. Staff is extremely friendly (not speaking English though), the food is a little expensive but very tasty and the rooms are basic but clean.
Cons: Ceiling fan does a poor job in keeping the room cool, especially when considering the uncovered tin roof that does its part in turning the room into an oven throughout the day. This could easily be improved by insulating the roof a little bit. Furthermore, curtains should be installed in all rooms.
Pros: View, restaurant area was really beautiful .Manager was very friendly.
Cons: To sleep there wasn' t possible. very noisy, something drop to our metal roof, all the night. Wi fi we got only some hours. Many hours withouth electricity. This is not a house problem, this state problem. We had candles.
Pros: Lunch The sea view
Cons: Electricity cut often No fan Shower not working at all
Pros: The food is really good, best cooks!
Cons: Unconfortable, no running water, powercuts, tiny room....
Pros: The hotel has its charm and it’s nicely located, overlooking the lagoon and the beach where local children play around.
Cons: The facilities! There was hardly any running water and electricity during our stay. Apparently it’s only available at certain times, but during these periods it failed to work as well. Also, there’s no information about it on their website. I have no problem washing in a bucket of water but it’s better to know this in advance. The Internet, as they inform, is available for 2euros/person per night. However, when we asked about it on arrival, we were informed they can only provide it the next day. Then, when we did get it, it was not very useful as you need to plug it in and since the electricity goes on and off randomly, it’s very unreliable... And our final disappointment- Since we were going on a tour very early the next morning, we asked in the afternoon if it was possible to get some bananas and/or a bit of bread to take with us, but apparently it was impossible. I tried asking again as it seemed it can’t be such a big deal for a place that is a restaurant at the same time, but to no avail.
Pros: Good location.
Cons: Awful service when they over-booked and had no room for us. There was a lot the staff could have offered and helped with. They did nothing. Didn't even say sorry. Pathetic. Don't go.
Pros: Beautiful space, mazing food, and very nice staff. Wonderful view and location. Unfortunately the beach in front is not that clean, but that is not about property
Cons: Bed wasn’t that comfortable. Electricity and water. There wasn’t an option for internet like mentioned on the listing.
Pros: Breakfast was included, which was a very nice surprise; breakfast consisted of fruits, and either saotomean herbal tea or coffee With milk, bread, and egg. I stayed in the room on the upper floor, where I had two balconies/terraces, which was great. I could do birdwatching on the terrace facing the river and a safú (african plum) tree. Lunch or dinner menu is 10 euro, and includes starters and a dessert. The restaurant is popular with tourists/groups, but sometimes I was the only guest. The guests are ususally seated separately, so there was not a lot of interaction between us. On the fishermen's Beach there were always kids playing around, animals, and of course fishermen. The waiter said that it is possible to swin at the far end of that beach, but I did not try it. Unluckily some boys tried to drown another boy one afternoon, it was all visible from the terrace, in the end the boy was relased by the time I got down to the riverfront. I did a daytrip to Praia Micondó, where there are toilets and a small arts shop. I went there by motorcycle taxi, ask at Mionga for help. Mionga is located very close to the village, so it is possible to get a feeling of daily life by walking around there. The bus/taxi stop is within walking distance, so it is quite easy accessible by public transport; just get off in Angolares. If you walk through the village you'll get to Roca Sao Joao where there is wi-fi,cafe/restaurant, art galley++.
Cons: There was no wi-fi, which was stated could be paid for. I've missed some toiletries after my stay, and I think they might have been lost at Mionga.
