The location was great, and the decor was definitely local.
First of all, the pictures posted by the property are entirely misleading. The "garden view" room looks out on the parking lot and other buildings, and the pond looks nothing like the pictures. But our main complaint was the lack of doors in the room. A bit hard to explain, the pictures show it all. Basically, the toilet and shower (separate) each shared a wall with the bedroom - clear glass. Their doors opened to the sink area, but "door" might be a misnomer - it was a metal frame with a sheet of PVC. Flimsy and transparent PVC. There was a single sliding piece that could hide either the toilet or sink, but not both. And either way, the non-door door was always exposed. If you need darkness or silence to sleep (let's say you're traveling with another person and/or baby), this might be a bit challenging. Additionally, every request/question we posed to the receptionist was answered NO. For example, we asked about the advertised 24-hour kitchen. NO. We asked if there was a place to sit around a table and eat (we were traveling with a toddler). NO. We pushed, and were told we had a table in our room. Technically, yes. But it was a high dresser, which held the coffee/kettle, and we only had 2 chairs. Only when we asked again, were we told about the dining area on the 3rd floor. We checked it out, it was thick with cigarette smoke. No high chairs. We opted to eat in our room. The next morning we asked about the toilet and shower doors, were told NO. Every room has the same arrangement. We told them we could not stay any longer, and they told us we had to talk to booking.com. Which we did, and within the hour received a cash refund for our visit and we found a better, nicer place. Breakfast included: a bowl of rice porridge, a plate with 2 slices of white bread, a small sausage, some pickled something, a cracker thingy, a dab of jam. And a second plate with a yogurt and a few grapes.
the style of the chamber and hotel
Large, comfortable room.
Shower wall adjacent to bedroom was made of glass so no privacy. Breakfast was brought to our room and was cold by the time it arrived. No choice of menu. Wouldn’t recommend ordering it. Staff had very limited English, so difficult to obtain information. No maps of the town available. The hotel is a long way from the centre and from the sea.
For me the location was key- I lived in the neighboring street and wanted to stay close. The staff was friendly (speaking Chinese helped) and it is really quiet for Qingdao!! Water, tea and instant coffee are included in the room rate.
It’s a bit run down- the lovely cultural and design aspects are there but just so worn off...what a pity. The breakfast was really not up to standards- for 6€/8$ you can get four breakfast dishes outside the hotel! (It was: one Joghurt, 4/5 Cocktail tomatoes, rice porridge, cold fried egg, a smidge of Jam, one cold mini sausage, 2 toasts.) It doesn’t feel like a real hotel somehow- maybe because you walk through exhibits of art or because there are open offices/meeting rooms you need to pass... a but odd.
The receptionist offered to upgrade the original room (as this was in a poor state of repair. However, she then asked for a non-credit card payment of 400 Yuan cash, which she then refused to give me a receipt for!
