Guesthouse Mintaro Hut - Yamagata
1
9.1 Excellent (324 reviews)
Overview Reviews
NEWLY OPEN. WE OFFER COMFORTS FOR VISITORS. PLEASE CHOOSE THE HOTEL FOR BUSINESS AND SIGHTSEEING.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The amenities were very good. The room was clean and spacious. I liked the friendly host and his staff. I enjoyed the company of other guests and some friends who dropped in. Good people. Sometimes a business hotel is the right choice. Sometimes a minshuku or hostel is the right choice. The right choice for me in Yamagata was this wonderfully different guest house. If you like shared meals, conversation, listening to stories, a surprise burst of a capella singing, a taste of sake or perhaps even random events you may well enjoy a couple of nights here. I did. Honesty box for drinks and snacks. Donation tin for any shared meals you choose to join.
Cons: All good. Maybe walking down the stairs in the middle of the night to use the toilet at my age.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great stay ! The dinner with the owner and staff person (+other guest) was a wonderful time ! We tried local sake and home made plum wine (plus delicious dishes) ! Food and drinks are avaimable for free or at very raisonnable prices. Very confortable and homely place ! Towels, earplugs, shampoo ... are available. Very good geographic position also : 10-15min away from the station by walking, and 1-2min away from the parc of the former Yamagata castle, which is a great area for picnic, chilling, reading, walking around ...
Cons: Honestly ... nothing. I couldn't have asked for more or better.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The most at-home guest house I have visited. You get to experience a modern Japanese house and facilities. Beautiful garden and wonderful owner.
Cons: Far walk from the station.
6.3 Good
Cons: Other residents where loud and noisy. They were having midnight snacks with alcohol, after that they were loud and puked all night. The host and staff couldn't do anything about it. We had a really poor nights sleep.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The best part of the stay here is the ambiance. The hostess, Akane, is very special, eager to please and super pleasant. The downstairs kitchen area is open for use, and one evening a bunch of locals got together for dinner and a musical performance, which was one of the highlights of our trip. Also, there are special aromatic bars for the baths, nice touch. Also liked being 3 minutes from the big park with the cherry trees for the sakura
Cons: There's not much to do about it, but the bathrooms and showers are downstairs, so that part is not very private. By the second day, when we knew people, it felt a little more comfortable, but still not ideal. In any event, that really was the only negative aspect, and certainly not a deal breaker.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is good!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Mintaro is just great in every way. It is ridiculously good value for money for such a good location, clean, large rooms and amazing amenities with the kitchen and lounging area. It isn't far from the station but in a really quiet street just minutes from the castle park. But the best bit about this place is undoubtedly the staff! The owner Sato-san is such a friendly and kind character who cooks up some amazing food in the evenings which you're welcome to join. Sake included ;). The rest of the staff are just so nice as well and made my (sadly too short) stay perfect. I had so much fun eating, drinking and getting to know the staff while exploring the delights of Yamagata and the surrounding area. Couldn't recommend Mintaro enough and already planning my trip back.
Cons: Nothing!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Decent location. It is a nice home stay with very nice character. The owner is hospitable and the place is cosy though small. There are very cute cats too! Nice garden at the back too! We can make our own breakfast too!
Cons: The sound isolation isn't that fantastic but it is fine.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nice staffs Clean room Good vibes
Cons: No restaurant or cafe around the guesthouse :(
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the atmosphere is quite warm, host will cook dinner for guests (you can pay money in a small box), and it's really delicious. the equipment in guest house is also great, beer and drinks is only 100yen

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The room!!! It's newly renovated room. Modern yet with Japanese touch on it. Very impressive with my room. The onsen come second best. Nothing beat hot dip after tiring day. And the food is very delicious and large variety of spread. Definitely worth staying when you visit Zao Onsen
Cons: Nothing! If there is anything I didn't like would be i regretted booking this hotel for a night. Wish i could stayed longer
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is a beautiful hotel that has amazing onsen! They have one in the hotel building and one out of building. My favorite was the outside one and went 5 times during my 2 nights stay. they offer complimentary shuttle service from/to Yamagata station which made my trip much easier. The meal was great too.
Cons: it is a bit out of town centre. and I loved the dinner on the first night but not the second night one.
6.3 Good
Pros: The onsen was excellent.
Cons: We were very disappointed to find that the (non-smoking) room smelled of smoke, and worst of all, one of our yukata jackets had a cigarette butt in the pocket. Disappointing. Also, please STOP playing the Ghibli CD on repeat. Was very annoying.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: 2 Outdoor onsens with nice lush greenery views. Dinner and bfast were yummy Service was excellent Room is very comfortable Free welcome drinks and snacks
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was perfectly located right by the ski lift and ropeway to the snowmonsters. It was a little further away from shops and the other restaurants. Food was excellent...probably too much food at dinner. Onsen was really nice. Great place, but it was expensive! I was surprised that children under 10 were charged the full amount for the meal even though they barely eat that much.
7.5 Good
Pros: Ryokan is located in a Very quite area with less crowd and traffic. That give a very good relaxation.
Cons: Onsen is not much privacy. Room has no aircon.
7.9 Good
Pros: Room is spacious. The room can accommodate up to 5 people but we were there with just 3 so the space is more than enough. The dinner is great. Staffs at the dining room were great. They are willing to help and with smiling on their face all the time even though they are very busy and tired from running around.
Cons: The staffs at the reception should be replaced with a better attitude staffs. It was a little surprise that no one show up to help us with the door or luggage at all unlike all other ryokans or big hotel we visited through out Japan. When we approach the reception, all staffs were inside the room so have to ring a bell and once they came out, nothing have change her face was like “why are you here at this time?” No offer for free shuttle to Ropeway or even introducing the lounge for waiting until check-in time. At least she checked whether the room is ready for check-in or not. Another shot that I was very impressed was in the morning where I went to check out and asked for free shuttle back to Yamagata which the hotel has provided this free service. They told us that it is full and we need to reserve 3 days in advance which was not making any sense to me. But it was my fault as it was their rule so I let it go. Again, the staffs were not helpful and not even show the effort to help. The only thing they told was that there is a bus terminal but no one were saying about the anytime free shuttle back to the terminal like other normal ryokan. I strongly recommend management to replace majority of reception staffs or get them trained to make them feel proud of their work and know that they are representing the looks of their hotel. I am very confident that I will not revisit the hotel again from the above reason even though all others area are good.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean, excellent staffs, dinner is very high quality
Cons: Not much actually
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Low season so I I was upgraded to their renovated Japanese style rooms, very spacious and comfortable. Property is very clean and the dinner was a amazing feast.
Cons: Although hotel was pretty empty I was still required to wait about an hour until official check-in time!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff made our stay so enjoyable, everyday we were greeted with enthusiasm. The breakfast and dinner were outstanding. The musical entertainment in the lounge at night time was an unexpected pleasure. As was the complimentary dessert and drinks. Thank you for a beautiful stay.
Cons: It would have been nice to be able to book the private onsen, we only got to use it once during our stay. Each time we went to use it, the onsen was occupied and we gave up waiting after 30 minutes as we ran out of time. Having said that, the public onsen was very nice.

Cons: Nil

10.0 Excellent
Pros: A perfect place for the last two days of our very busy trip to Japan. This Ryokan is so beautiful inside, the location is quiet and scenic and the service and food are exceptional. We had a maisonette on two floors so there was plenty of space to relax and we also had our own hot spring bath, which we thoroughly enjoyed using. The western style beds were very comfy. The hotel staff were so polite and helpful with everything, nothing was too much trouble for them to make our stay as comfortable as possible.
Cons: The smell of the sulphur outside from the hot spring streams when walking around the village! Absolutely nothing with the Ryokan, it was perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A most memorable, authentic Japanese Royokan. Friendly staff, beautiful onsen
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent service and meals!! Please do try the hot spring in the open air. Walking distance to the No. 4 lift and the hotel offers coupon to the rental store. Fantastic snow & hot spring experience. Highly recommended and will come back!
Cons: The indoor hot spring is little bit too hot for me :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Helpful staffs, they are so nice and polite.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything! When we walked in the ryokan we did feel at ease and relax immediately after 10h flight, 2h30 train and 45min taxi! The decoration is at the same time very traditional & modern. We can notice that every object, plant, flowers, etc. have been thought and placed carefully! The hostess who welcomed us was super nice and polite (sorry we forgot your name) and put us at ease with hot tea and sweet in the main foyer where a fire was heating the huge room. The room is big and spotless clean, beds super comfortable, big bathroom with bathtub and Japanese bath. Breakfast and diner is AMAZING, quality, choice and presentation. The ryokan has 2 public onsen one for men and one for women and 2 private semi outdoor onsens that can be booked freely. Special thanks to Mr Tanaka for the service during breakfast and diner!
Cons: The location is secluded. We took the Shikansen from Tokyo to Shiroishizao then 45 min of taxi (7,000¥). There is a local business that can bring you to the nearest town of the ryokan from which the private car of the hotel can pick you up. However everything is in Japanese and we did not know when the bus would come.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The service as exceptional. The staff was waiting at the bus station to drive us to the hotel even though we did not inform them about the arrival time. They also offered to drive us to the bus station after checking out. Food was also good, and the hotel was walking distance to ropeway and ski slopes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: 1. Service was impeccable! From the reception to the dinner service to the breakfast service - and of course, carrying our luggage to the car and waving us bye♥ 2. Food was beyond awesome! The Zao beef at dinner was especially succulent and tender (: 3. The 2nd floor onsen was super atmospheric, espcially the one with the stone bath and view of the snow! 4. Room was so big and comfortable! The comforter was made of this material that felt like silk~ 5. Location was great! Not on the main street but right next to this really pretty stairway up to the shrine. 10/10 would recommend! Thank you!
Cons: Nothing!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the breakfasts and dinners were stunning!
Cons: hard futon beds
9.6 Excellent
Pros: super friendly staff. language is not the barrier. they do all their best to fulfill all your requirement.
Cons: absolutely nothing.. everything is just perfect.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. We arrived very early and the staff let us check in and we were able to access the wonderful Onsen baths. Our room was lovely and spacious and had a great place to sit in comfort and watch the snow come down on the mountains outside. The private dining experience for dinner and breakfast was also incredible and all of the staff were very attentive, friendly and helpful. Would recommend this place to anyone.
Cons: Nothing!

Cons: Nothing! This place went above and beyond my expectations. Suppose, there was two of us and we only got one door card. I could have asked for a second one, but that's not a big deal!

Pros: Room 1015 was huge and had ample space for luggage and clothes for a long stay. Breakfast was really good, and the capuccino machine was the best so far on this trip (>60 hotel stays so far). The windows opened for welcome fresh air. There was a large couch and easy chair with a coffee table, a mini- fridge, offee- tea service, air purifier, trousers press and a massage chair. The shower had a good thermostatic temp control. Aircon and internet worked well the whole stay.
Cons: Nothing, really

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The service of the front office lady who checked us in was impeccable. Her attitude was excellent and she possesses a bubbly and jovial personality
5.0 Okay
Pros: It’s close to AEON super market. Love the free drink at 2nd floor so we can sit and chat.
Cons: The parking space that the hotel offered is not sufficient. We can see empty parking space but the machine doesn’t allow us in. They should be able to ask the parking vendor to offer more spaces and let customers in. The room is not clean enough. Got bug bites on both rooms in the 1st night. I called and remind them to clean carefully. It became much better the next day.

Pros: Lodge was located at the end of sunrise slope. Easily accessible from ski. Masando san was excellent in taking care of his guests. We have some good recommendations for food and onsen from him. He is always very punctual in sending and picking us up. Where could you get a lodge employee who even collect your shoes from rental shop on your behalf!
Cons: Steep walk from town to lodge. However, Masando san can always give a lift.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Easy access to the ski lift with a ticket office at the lift. Host prepared to drive to and from the village.
Cons: Would recommend buying up groceries in Yamagata prior to the bus trip up the hill. Small fridge and microwave in the dining room makes preparing dinner easy.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We stayed at the beginning of March and it seemed to be the low season of Zao. The place is a bit old but still well maintained and clean. The location is great, it's just next to the Sunrise slope where you can just ski in and out. Considering the price and the location, I believe this is one of the best choices here. The host, Mr. Naganuma is a cool man and speaks fluent English. He knows everything about Zao, drives us around, knows exactly what we need and what we're searching for, and was extremely considerate, just like my grandpa. We had lots of fun with him and would definitely stay here again next time we're here!!

6.7 Good
Pros: Nice Onsen facilities. Friendly staff.
Cons: Definitely not 5*. It’s a nice place, slightly outdated. We went there out of season; could not have dinner in restaurant (you have to book before you arrive!). Breakfast is ok, but hot food is not hot and avoid the coffee.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice Onsen of course
9.2 Excellent
Pros: It's getting to the end of the snow season in Zao, so the town outside the hotel is pretty much closed up for the year, but the hotel itself is lovely to spend time in, especially in the incredible and massive onsen facilities. We really enjoyed relaxing in them after a long and exciting day snowboarding. The outdoor onsen are incredible as well, relaxing in the hot water when it's snowing on your head was an experience I'll never forget. We really enjoyed our stay.
Cons: The rooms, and the onsens are really beautiful and comfortable, but the rest of the hotel feels a little sparse and too big. It's quite a long walk from some of the rooms to the onsens which is a little frustrating.

Pros: very good onsen (hot springs) quality, very good public bath facility, good country meal, provide shuttle form train station to hotel, provide discount coupon for rope cars

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Good service staff Set dinner and breakfast very well. It has a private onsen room for free.
Cons: The accommodation is quite far from the bus station. But how can I get the accommodation to receive and send it.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: It was good value for money and in a lovely location. We are using a variety of differently priced ryokans and hotels during our seven week Japan trip. This one has been the most simple and least expensive but it was still comfortable and the food was plentiful with several meat dishes at dinner - probably too much meat for me - but shows that the hosts were being generous. The food, although served in traditional style, did not seem quite as Japanese as many of the meals we have had and some people may prefer this. We made up our own bedding and did not have a toilet or bathroom in the room but the modern toilet was across the hall from our room and it was a pleasure to use the sulphurous onsen to bathe. I also appreciated the chance to access the tea and coffee any time for a mere 100 yen. Our GPS system could not find its precise location by the telephone number but Google Maps had it sorted with the name when we got close.
Cons: There were a lot of stairs to our room and the taps in the onsen were a bit rusty, but they still worked properly.
7.9 Good
Pros: The staff is really helpful. The dinner was served with local ingredients and was quite impressive.
Cons: The location is a bit far away from the bus station and the staff couldn’t commute us to the bus station due to the snow.

Cons: No toilet and bath in room

Pros: Chigusa-san (the owner) is very accommodating and excells in English. Onsen is great and it's only a short walk to the ropeway. If you want an affordable authentic Ryokan experience, this is it.
Cons: Nothing really stands out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Helpful english-speaking staff.
7.1 Good
Pros: Friendly and accommodating staff. Good location.
Cons: Probably due for renovation, especially the bathrooms. No lift made it hard getting up to the room with heavy luggage.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Short walk to everything in Zao-onsen, incredibly hospitable owner. Very clean rooms and great view. The indoor onsen of the property was a good size as well.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and helpful front desk. They have reduced ski pass and Onsen tickets and can arrange transport for luggageand store luggage on check out. Room 307 was spacious and had a small sitting area. The tatami mattress was fine and great warm covers but the pillows were very uncomfortable in our opinion ( not uncommon in Japan). The walk to the ski lifts was about 5-10 minutes uphill but no problem especially if you store your skis and boots at the lifts or ski shop. The hotel is very central in the village - close to Onsen, shop and restaurants.
Cons: For those who don’t do Onsen ( public or hotel) there is on,y 1 shower room for the whole hotel. Breakfast was very plain and the breakfast room rather dull ( western breakfast choice)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: -The host, Chigusa-san was able to communicate with us in fluent english. -She tried her best to give us great recommendations for food. -The staff are very kind and their dinner is amazing.
Cons: -The staff are a bit too busy. I suppose that is typical for a ryokan to cater to so many guests. -Be prepared to travel through snowy road if you have a lot of luggage. -Sound proofing maybe a bit thin.
7.5 Good
Pros: The location for skiing, dinner and the local bus station was great. They have their own onsen plus 3 local onsens less than 3 minutes walk from the accommodation.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The host and everyone who works at yoshidaya were amazingly helpful with any inquiries and made us feel very welcomed.
Cons: The pillows were uncomfortable after a day on the mountain, to thin and a bit hard but still perfectly manageable for our stay.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good size room with nice decor and ensuite toilet. Nice, friendly staff. 5 minute stroll to ski field. Discounts provided for lift tickets, ski hire and outside onsens. Has its own onsen which is great after a day on the slopes.
Cons: Hard pillows to be expected travelling in Japan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s a great place to stay (stayed two times already). Nice place to stay in winter with convenient 5 mins distance to bus station and 10 mins to the nearest slope. Very nice staffs with all 10+ years working experience, would love to help you all the time. Would love to come back again!
Cons: Not enough adapters in room

Pros: It was a week since I’ve been studying in Tokyo, needless to say I needed an escape. I’ve always wanted to visit Japanese hot springs, so Zao was a perfect choice for me. Beautiful surroundings, sounds of nature and mainly - the nicest and friendliest stuff, who politely helped me and assisted me, even with my 0 skill in speaking Japanese. It was the nicest experience yet, with comfortable and cozy traditional room, clean bathroom and delicious Japanese dinner. And I fell in love with the onsen - there were two types of them, both were spacious and clean. The first one was with the real sulfide water, the second one was regular. Also they’re open 24 hours. Very good experience, left with a desire to go back. Highly recommend! Arigatogozaimasu

Pros: Great location for skiing, loved the resort. Mount zao was amazing. The hotel handled most things and gave us discounted ski passes. Rentals were a stones throw away.
Cons: Pretty dated, but that’s to be expected. Wifi drops out in some bedrooms.

Cons: No toliet in the room.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Staff were great in making our experience memorable. The onsens were fantastic!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was extremely nice and comfortable for its price. It was walking distance to the rope way station, but the hotel still offers free shuttle to bring you there whenever you want. The staff was friendly and nice. I also quite like the hot spring with all natural spring water.
Cons: The hot fan can make the room really dry. It would be nice if the hotel offers air humidifier.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It’s location is near the lift, and the hot spring is great as well. You can reserve for shuttle bus to other skip lift, train station or Lawson.
Cons: The room without toilet is somehow inconvenient especially during winter, it is quite cold/lazy to get outside of the room. 15mins walk from hotel to Lawson.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very accommodating. We came with a baby and they were very thoughtful in including things like baby chairs and a baby yukata. They also made a custom vegetarian menu for our vegetarian friend, that was equally delicious as our own meals. The onsen water was great quality you had the option of a high acidity(sulfur) bath and less acidic one. The futons were clean and very comfortable as well.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were extremely friendly and the breakfast was very meticulous!
Cons: nothing

Pros: Very good location, opposite station. Very near supermarket and bus station. Mixed dorm room is spacious. There is curtain for each bed. Allow early check in.
Cons: The next room Japanese made quite of noise from 11 plus pm till 3 plus am. There should have curtain to provide privacy for front and back bed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place really is special. Along with an authentic Ryokan experience and a really nice public bath, the staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. When I said I wanted to go to the open air bath they offered to drive me there (it's not even far away). I also think it's good value considering the high quality you are getting. Definitely recommend.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Takasagoya Ryokan is a family run inn that is in a great location in Zao Onsen. They have a public bath in the inn, and are also almost right across the street from another one. If you stay be sure to have the owners fix you a dinner - ours was absolutely amazing! Breakfasts were great as well - and so much that we never needed lunch. Definitely plan to come back to ski!
Cons: Remember that the beds are futons, not western style. We are fine with them, but just a reminder.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very nicely located for accessing the slopes, the family running the place was very friendly and cooked fantastic meals, great place to stay for a traditional ryokan experience
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were extremely friendly, which made our stay so much more enjoyable.

Pros: The family who run the hotel are super friendly, they speak little English but they hire a Taiwanese girl who speak Mandarin, so no problem for me.
Cons: Dinner is a little expensive

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing traditional experience for the price. Staff barely some English but we all managed to communicate fine.
Cons: Nothing to do with Omiya, but it was hard to find many restaurants open later.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Rooms, location, food, staff service, overall fantastic place despite comments below
Cons: No bathroom in room, rigid and not good check in and check out times, ski equipment old
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was excellent. I liked the layout, it felt like an adventure getting to your room! It was very comfortable. I wanted to stay for more than just one night.
Cons: It was a shame the onsen wasn’t outdoors (because it was during the winter?), that probably would have made the trip perfect. The check in (explanation process) could have been shorter, the staff could print it out on a card instead or something.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Just about everything was so Traditional Japanese, which we were seeking. Great
Cons: The Meals were very complicated (v. good), some brief explanation on paper of what the items were and how to cook them would have been great
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Everything pretty much! The onsen, the tatami, the food at the restaurant. Hint: do book the dinner included: very good value & there was nothing else in the village of Zao Onsen that was open (summer time)
Cons: Not per se something that bothered me, but there is no shower in the room, you have to use the onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The onsen was quite and well maintained. The food went above and beyond expectations with friendly and helpful staff to guide you.
Cons: Can not think of anything bad with the place.
7.1 Good
Pros: Comfortable and spacious traditional Japanese rooms. Nice hot onsen within the Ryokan. Place for relaxation and a massage chair. Walking distance to the village and souvenir shops.Facilities for renting and storing skiing gear not that we made any use of it.
Cons: Communication with staff very difficult as hardly any staff member could speak English. No lifts so had to carry suitcases upstairs. No dinner or lunch available so had to look for it in the village. Very few restaurants in the village and the few that were open were small and could not accommodate every one who wanted to eat there. We were turned away from the only restaurant open at 20:30.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Room is great for the size, facilities and cleanliness. Outdoor Onsen is very comfortable.

Cons: Don’t have a private bath room in my room.
5.8 Okay
Pros: the onsen, however the hotel does not response to your request
Cons: hotel staff is not very friendly except the translator , an American by the name of Josh, he is helpful
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Stayed here 10 years ago, and have good memories of their Hot Spring selection, which is still great. It’s a short distance (a few minutes) to lift #29, but would definitely recommend having rubber cat tracks on ski boots for the up-hill on icy road walk. Staff are always helpful, and easy to arrange hotel shuttle from and to the Zao Bus Station. It’s a short stroll by road to Uwanodai for a ski wax at Best Rental, and looks like they have some good performance skis for rent too.
