Overview Reviews
Located in Ometepe Island, Totoco Ecolodge- Authentic Ecotourism is within a 15-minute drive of Lake Nicaragua and Santo Domingo Beach. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services, multilingual staff, and luggage storage.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: If you are fine with the concept of Eco hotels (compost bathroom and some occasional bugs in the room), then this is a good eco hotel with great views of the volcano and surroundings especially from the reception area, very good fresh breakfast, friendly staff, beautiful landscaping, rooms had floor fans to keep cool, a pool with more views, hotel located higher up, out in the woods away from the streets. The road up is steep and rocky at some places. We drove with our minivan and got used to it quite well. So you don’t really need a 4x4.
Cons: There were a couple of guests who smoked cigars for a very long time in such a beautiful setting with such clean air all around. Would be nice if the hotel would extend its eco friendly environment to include smoke-free places especially in the common areas near the reception.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location provided fantastic views of Volcano and Lake with amazing sunsets. Food was good for all meals and had a good bar. Rooms were of a good size with outdoor showers. Compost toilet was fine. Staff all excellent, providing excellent service.
Cons: Would like to have had cooler drinks but always provided extra ice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This place was paradise. The view was spectacular. Amazing value for your money. It was very peaceful and tranquil, perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. We had the family house and it was huge. It had comfy big beds, a plunge pool on the roof, and sunroom with a breathtaking view of the volcano. We wanted to stay another night but It was booked up already, so Miguel went out of his way to help us find a different hotel for our second night. He was also an excellent bartender :)
Cons: Be prepared to encounter lots of fun jungle insects and creatures. Aka spiders, scorpions, and ants. If anything it made the stay more exciting and interesting!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The food was very tasty and prepared diligently by cooks who you can see working in their kitchen off the dining area. The reception staff who double as bartenders and waiters are exceptionally friendly, informative and dedicated to practicing their English. The beds and cabanas are clean and beds are comfortable.
Cons: You’re a bit far up the hill, so best to have your own means of transport or you’ll struggle at getting a reasonable price for a taxi or plan to spend a lot $$ on transport back and forth. The path leading to the lodge is quite bumpy and best accessed with a truck or SUV. The pool area is small and lounge chairs aren’t comfortable enough to fall asleep on. WiFi is only accessible in the reception area.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The amazing view
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Really beautiful eco lodge located right in the jungle, with the best views, awesome poolside, lovely people, good food and topservice. Breakfast included, very good!
Cons: Food was a bit overpriced, but good. If you don't have a stomach for insects, big spiders and other wildlife, don't go here.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The view from our bungalow of the volcano was incredible. All the food at the restaurant was superb. The staff all v friendly The pool was great. Loved hearing the howler monkeys and birds in the morning. Highly recommend a 4x4 to get here- or get a taxi. Balgue town at the bottom is lovely.
Cons: Nothing. A piece of paradise in the jungle.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location!
Cons: Off grid is an attractive selling point for me but unfortunately there were issues with the solar power battery in our house. As we were checking out, the expert appeared to fix the problem so I think this issue may now be resolved.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Spectacular views
Cons: Too frequent power outages. No coffee/tea bar in room and not available until 7 when breakfast started

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderfully located in the forrest. Amazing feel! Very friendly and helpful staff.
Cons: We stayed in a room with forest view - but we didn’t really have an outdoor space. Most other rooms seemed to have a proper terrace with eg hammocks/chairs. Also would be nice to add a place to put clothes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was just perfect. The staff was also very friendly and helpfull.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Secluded location. Beautiful view. Delicious breakfast.
Cons: Private patio being used for daily group yoga.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful and unique property set in the lush landscape of the island.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Very unique stay at Selvista. It is quite far from the main town, which made transportation expensive. But once we got there it was worth it. There is so much to do at Selvista. The property is massive, and they encourage you to walk around and explore the "jungle" setting. Breakfast every morning was delicious and made in the common area. The staff were so helpful, and made some excellent recommendations. The room was comfortable and we had everything that we needed. All the locals in Ometepe are lovely and we felt very safe walking around. Tried lots of restaurants in Balgue and they were all 5 stars.
Cons: It is far from the main town, and transportation on Ometepe is pricey, unless you take the bus. We didn't have much time so we opted for private cars and a quad. Walking to Selvista at night is a little bit tough, as its quite dark and you really had to watch your step as the road is very uneven and rocky. This was easily fixed with a good flashlight and good walking shoes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The guesthouse was quite the find on Ometepe. Megan - the host - welcomed us and and we slotted into the pace of life there immediately. The rooms were incredible. Amazing views. Luxurious and felt like home from the start. It’s the perfect base to explore the island in anyway you see fit and also the perfect place to just sit and do nothing but watch the wildlife. Guests converge in the kitchen area in the evening for chats about their days and it’s the perfect place to unwind. Highly recommended.
Cons: As with anything rainforesty you’re sharing the space with wildlife. They were here first so can’t complain.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was amazing! The staff here were extremely helpful and friendly! Our room was huge and gorgeous with an excellent view. The breakfast both mornings were different and both were delicious!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I stayed at Casa del Bosque on Ometepe for five nights in Feb, 2020. I really enjoyed this quiet end of Ometepe and the village of Balgue. The room at Casa Del Bosque was large with a large balcony overlooking the gardens and the lake in the distance. The owner was very helpful in arranging tours and transportation to the ferry. Café Campeche, in the village, is owned by Casa Del Bosque, and serves food, much of which is grown in their gardens. Good wifi.
Cons: For those with difficulty walking, the walk to the village may be a bit long. But the owner does offer rides for those that need it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything- BEAUTIFUL big private balcony overlooking the farm and the lake, absolutely delicious breakfasts (easily the best of our 3 months of travelling) using fresh ingredients from the farm, really helpful travel advice and local tips from Ben who is a fantastic host. We did the Cuchillas waterfall hike with Edgar and Rio Istian kayaking with Kevin. Both great guides and highly recommend trips those too.
Cons: That we only booked 3 nights. Recommend a couple more :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful place to be. Did not want to leave. If you love nature, trees, plants, animals etc then stay here.
Cons: Did not dislike anything. Just a warning for those with mobility issues or those people used to the conveniences of city life: Be prepared with the knowledge that you will be doing a lot of walking if you do not have a vehicle with you.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Ben is an amazing guy, really helped us during our stay.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Arriving at dark made it a bit hard for us to find the gate for the property, but once we made it up the driveway, this place more than exceeded our expectations. The views were stunning, the staff were lovely, and Ben made us feel at ease. Being able to order food for delivery from the restaurant made for a great end to a long travel day, and the fridges and kitchen were stocked with beer and alcohol so that we could just relax and plan the next days activities. The whole property is stunning, and it's clear that Ben has put his heart and soul in to making sure that his guests are comfortable and set up for great activities around the island.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a really cool place on a working farm. I loved to sit in the hammock mornings and evenings and listen to the birds and howler monkeys. The owner also has a restaurant just down the road called Campestre - best restaurant on the island. All the food for the restaurant is grown on the farm!! I will be back!
1.0 Poor
Pros: Property was beautiful. Owner has way to much on his plate + a few screws loose-- so you're better off somewhere else.
Cons: The listing for this rental states "shared kitchen" under facilities yet when we arrived, and there was in fact a full kitchen the host/ owner stated it wasn't really for guest use? We had previously informed him we were bringing groceries prior to our arrival. We had already premade food from our previous stay and all we wanted to do was heat it up in a pan. He lied to us and said there was no gas hooked up but when we checked, the stove was fully functional. We felt taken advantage of and lied to yet when we expressed our frustration to the owner over the phone, he got extremely defensive. We eventually were told to walk up to main house to borrow a frying pan. The next morning the owner was waiting for us outside the front door and stated that he was kicking us out due to the nature of the phone call the previous night. As upset and blindsided as we were, we were able to squash the drama, both explain where each other were coming from and move on. We remained there and finished out our stay. Prior to checkout, we cleaned the kitchen, did our dishes, cleaned up the house and even swept the floors. Upon leaving the property on the day we checked out, the owner had parked his truck in the middle of a small dirt access road leading to his property from the main rode. Being that we had a rental car and a ferry to catch we had no way of finding or calling the owner to tell him to move his truck. The power had been out for the last 3 hours of our stay and we had no way of contacting him. We honked our horn and hollered for him for about 10 min looking around him. No luck. Desperately afraid we were going to miss our ferry reservation, we had to take our rental car basically four-wheeling to get around this jackass's truck which resulted with a huge dent on the side of the rental car due to rocks and boulders surrounding the path. I dont even want to know what that's going to cost...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The little hostel is amazing. It’s located on a small farm where all the vegetables for the kitchen are cultivated. The room was perfect, had an enormous patio and a comfortable bed.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Charming rooms with huge balconies. The house is absolutely lovely and it is surrounded by beautiful nature. If you are looking for ultimate relaxing time, this is the place for it. Ben is a fantastic person.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great view and surrounded by monkeys. Fresh made breakfast and a very nice & helpful host (Ben)

10.0 Excellent
Pros: A charming setting, tables and chairs under cover,,timetable of buses and ferries. A helpful owner who spoke English,I was even asked to join the birthday dinner for owner’s 3 yr old son.good breakfast for $3.i could use the kitchen to prepare my own meals,
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great- comfortable and clean. The family is so sweet and make you feel at home. I really can’t believe it’s so inexpensive. Centrally located so easy to go to all the “activity” spots. Breakfast is good and nearby restaurants also good. WiFi actually worked great everywhere which I’ve found is rare. Another tip- Right up the road is a coffee farm called Finca Magdalena which also has petroglyphs and their tour is super cheap and nice and you get a beautiful view. All around pretty ideal.
Cons: This complaint has nothing to do with the place itself and we were staying there on the weekend- there was some party noise in the not so far distance until late and people coaxing the roosters into crowing in the middle of the night. Probably on a weekday you’re fine and I’d still 100% recommend staying there.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast, lovely staff, very helpful, the room is big and clean, free water, close to the bus stop,
Cons: I suggest to rent a motorbike in other place, the owner of the motorbikes will try to rip you off for the petrol
7.0 Good
Pros: - Very friendly owners - speak spanish - Clean towels every day - Breakfast is very amazing and has a choice.
Cons: - no privacy since there are wholes between the rooms. So you hear all that is happening in the room next door - I had ants in my bed. After not believing it they finally gave me another room. I think they fixed it now. - If travelling alone this is not a good place to meet other people.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Everything is relative to the standards on the island! The location is in a quiet part of the island, not many tourists. Property starts on the trail leading to Maderas volcano and Finca Magdalena. Very clean relative to the location. New towels every day. Breakfast was amazing! For the price definetly a win. Odelba is super sweet as well.
Cons: As I said, everything is relative. There were ants and other bugs crawling around but you pretty much find that everywhere. Chickens will wake you up at around 7 in the morning.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and helpful owner. We had some trouble with transport and she waited for us until relatively late. If you come to Balgue to hike the volcano the road starts just in front of this property!
Cons: A bit aside of the main road (5-10 minutes), so when coming late good to have a headlight.

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Estella and her family are the sweetest and most helpful hosts! It’s was so nice I extended my stay. It is well situated in the middle of Balguë next to several restaurants and bars, there is also a little shop. Everything is at walking distance. The hostel itself doesn’t organise any parties or activities, but therefore even better to have a good sleep after partying or having a drink next door. When in need of a scooter/motorbike, they will help you and have one ready in less than 20mn! From their garden it is possible to walk down to the lake in a few minutes to have a drink at the small local bar down there. And the breakfast is delicious!!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the atmosphere, it was very calm place, easily reachable next to the main road (but not noisy) and with the access to the shore of the lake with the view to the volcano. They also offer the excelent breakfast, and the staff is really nice. The only thing I didn't feel so comfortable with was that the bathroom was in the middle of the patio. Overal, it's a really good deal!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are very friendly and will help with any questions you have. We rented a motorbike for 2 days to explore the island as using taxis would become very expensive. Breakfast is good value and very tasty. There are options for dinner within easy walking distance.
Cons: Just be aware that there are only cold water showers but once you get used to it it's fine. Also you will probably find geckos and or small spiders or other insects in the room as there are gaps between the roof and the walls but they are all harmless and there are mosquito nets over the beds.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Quiet and spacious, friendly owners, we would stay there again
Cons: Bathroom in our cabin requires some maintenance
9.2 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice garden and nice place
Cons: Loud dogs, also in the kitchen
6.0 Good
Pros: I fell in love with the beautiful garden and curvy wooden decor when I first saw the photos. Premises were lovely. Good, organic food both at the accommodation and nearby in Balgue.
Cons: Two and half hours away from ferry, very slow public transport. You not only need to pay for excursions, but also for a taxi/horse/moped to get there. Since they don't help group forming in any way, it will end up being very expensive for solo travelers. For example Laguna de Apoyo-San Jorge on mainland 15$ (shared shuttle with AC), here 35$ (taxi). Leon-San Jorge 25$ vs 65$. If you are a solo traveler, make sure to do your research, unless you have unlimited cash supply. If you travel in a group of 3 or more, you may consider their services. They also work with a very unreliable motor/quad/moped rental company, who have faulty and dangerous equipment. I have met many people, both very experienced and novices who had accidents in Ometepe.

10.0 Excellent
Cons: The location was great and had free safe parking for the bike I rented. Staff were amazing!
7.0 Good
Pros: Staff was friendly. They took us on a beautiful sunset tour. The place had a great vibes (met some amazing other travelers) and good music and colorful atmosphere. Had a great hang out space with hammocks and day beds above the reception. Location was great for adventures, food right between the 2 volcanoes.
Cons: Tired to get US bills broken for taxi back to ferry at the end of our stay only to be told they could only make change for paying guests. We had just stayed there for 5 nights. There no food/drinks there except breakfast which took forever!! Sunset tour they charged $5/person which is a great price until they tried to load 10 of us in a 5 seater jeep for transportation- they also failed to suggest runners instead of flip flops- it was quite the hike down and over rocks and a barbed wire fence.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, super colourful hostel full of colourful people and nice staff. Well-equipped kitchen, and located right next to an amazing Argentinian workshop.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, clean and more spacious dorms then the pictures look, nice staff and cheap food close by.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very helpful, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the owner is passionate about helping visitors explore and see the best of the island. It is situated within walking distance to several good eateries. There are quiet time rules at night which everyone understood and respected. A great place to stay!
Cons: That we had to leave and move on to another town.
5.4 Okay
Pros: Room was comfortable and it was a good, social atmosphere. I made some excellent friends at this hostel!
Cons: The room that we booked was unavailable upon arrival. The staff were not good. The staff took us on a sunset tour with the scooters we rented from them. The staff member was riding a motorbike and went way too fast on dirt/sandy roads. All 4 of us following on scooters got in an accident separately. The staff got a nurse to come to the hostel which was appreciated but did not stay to help translate while we were getting stitches and treatment. The staff came at 11pm that night and ask for money to repair the bike. We asked to stay an extra night to recover from the injuries for free and they said no. There was no compromise or assistance after the accident and it felt like they were trying to make money off our injuries.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Really cool layout for a hostel with lots of options for chilling. Staff were super friendly and had a great guest kitchen. Good prices for renting motorbikes and scooters. Would recommend for people looking for a good place in Blague.
7.5 Good
Pros: People very friendly
Cons: There is a rooster at night which makes noises all night. That really bothers sleeping
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very colorful hostal with sweet vibes and great staff. Also conveniently located to several good restaurants. Definitely recommend.

Pros: A very very nice host, who went beyond to make us feel like home. Provides towels, clean sheets, and he's always available if you need him. He has 2 rooms in the house but blocked both for us to have privacy which was very nice. Like the other reviewer mentioned its pretty open at some spots, so got lots of insekts/ants.. but we were prepared and didnt see that as a problem. Its right at the beach, with nice restaurants around. The kitchen got everything you need (besides a fridge, but you can buy ice for cheap). All in all: we would come back!!! Thank you very much Mar!!

Cons: All good
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Absolutely amazing awesome place with the best staff ever
6.0 Good
Pros: Good location, friendly hosts, nice garden.
Cons: The rooms are outdated, the blankets were old and wornout. There is no possibility to cook or anything, so you must go out to eat (there's some okay possibilities around). We haven't had dinner at the El Encanto restaurant so can't say anything about that but I wouldn't recommend having breakfast there.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice property in Santa Cruz. Lovely view of the volcano. Very friendly owner and staff.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful restaurant overlooking Conception Volcano, and great wholesome breakfast. The room was spacious and I loved the terrace outside. The hotel does justice to its name; the garden is a delight to walk when you wake up in the morning. Clean and groomed and exotic. Prepare for lots of insects which for me was contributing to an enchanting rural experience.
Cons: n/a
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Natural beauty, quiet and better place than those around here. Great views and glorious surroundings.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely stay with such a beautiful view from the restaurant! WiFi worked really well. Owner is very helpful in organising activities, such as hiking and horse riding.
Cons: There's only cold water unfortunately. It is a bit of a walk from the main road. This little alleyway is unlit, so feels a bit dodgy when walking back after dinner or in the dark, but having said that, we were absolutely fine as 2 young females walking back alone. A few lights would help!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I really enjoyed my stay at El Encanto Garden Hotel. It's situated in wonderful nature away from the hustle and bustle, still super close to Santo Domingo beach, and with an amazing view of the volcanos. Great place to relax and reach different spots on the island. It's very clean and comfortable, and the restaurant serves great home made food. The family running the hotel is super welcoming and responsive. I was traveling alone but they made me feel very welcome and Carlos, the owner is very knowledgeable on the island and can recommend and organize different activities (hiking, kayaking, horseback riding etc). I highly recommend it! Thank you for hosting me Carlos and family!

Pros: what i like was, that they were constantly cleaning, and the staff was always here to helped or take order. the global environment was nice as well totally in the local way. abuela hanging around doing landry or just willing to speak if you wanna improve your spanish. roosters, chickens and pigs going around, straight view on the lake and in your back the volcano, mind blowing landscape and crazy sunset. the food was good as well, the waiting was quite long though. They would take order way after the closing time of the restaurant. once at 5 in the morning they prepare breakfast and food for us to take away to climb the volcano! good service! an hour by shuttle (9 dollars) little bit more with local bus (20 to 30 cordoba every time you change bus). easy to find if you ask around! definitly good value for money!
Cons: no toilet door just a curtain (in at least our room), it has been a bit weird to see that first because we share a room, my wife, me and two friends. but yeah if you need you go. local kids come to enjoy the wifi but sometimes straight sitting in front of the room. a bit weird to see as european but it is how they do!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The staff is so friendly and helpful!! José Luis always treat us as a family!!
Cons: The dining table has an amazing view of the lake
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We have been travelling Nicaragua for a month now and came across this place while hitching and walking Ometepe for a week. Wow!!!! We were greated by such a nice family and shown and pristine white painted room facing the sunset on the lake, air con, fans and a nice shower. $10/night, we have stayed for 3 nights instead of continuing on. It's 5 minutes walk from the entrance of the waterfall and is a great base for the island, Sunsets are only seen on this side of the island. After a very affordable meal of fresh fish on the first night we decided to use the fire stove out back and make a chicken and plantain (which we picked up along the walk) broth and offer it to the family here. Such a nice experience. They offered us a free huge breakfast the next morning with juices and coffees, so nice, especially eating on the edge of the lake. You can see they have put a lot of effort recently into there business and are evolving as they learn more of foreign expectations of accommodation. We have seen a lot of travellers on bikes that come across this place for a beer, a meal and a view... They are distressed that they have already committed to the $8/night dorm bunk beds up the road when a great clean room for 2 is only $10/night here... With a portable air on system to boot. I'm a Michelin trained chef with my own accolades in the restaurant and hotel business, while this isn't the Berkeley or the Ritz it's a no brainer for $10/night and I'd happily give the FOH manager a job any time. If your spending time looking for that perfect affordable quiet place with a view and nice food then you should come and have a look here. Ps this is the only review I have written on this trip as I'm notoriously picky. Enjoy your travels.
Cons: Didn't have more time.
7.0 Good
Pros: They tried harder to be amiable,
Cons: Too much noise.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a quiet location a few minutes walk from the San Ramon waterfall trailhead. It's on the lake, and each evening we watched a beautiful sunset as we sat down for supper. Jose, the manager, provided exceptional service, the property was very clean and the food was great. Great value.
Cons: This is an isolated location with no restaurants, bars, cafes or other forms of entertainment. If that's what you are looking for, this is a fantastic spot.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was very good:. very friendly manager, comfortable beds, peaceful place on the Lake far from noisy towns, few meters to swim

Pros: Nelly is an incredibly nice person. She was always around ready to give us advices and recommendations to discover the surroundings! When we came home from hiking the volcano all covered in mud she even washed our shoes and made us try tamale.
Cons: However, the cabaña we slept in was really dirty. The room looked like it had not been cleaned for weeks. There were animal excrements everywhere and lots of insects (we had a scorpion in our bed the first night). The toilet was leaking so we had to turn on and off the water everytime we used it. First we thought what else could we accept for
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I arrived and the dormitory i booked was full. Nelly instantly upgraded me to a private room for the same price and i was able to check in at 10am. Because i was running the fuego y agua race the following morning she woke up early to make me breakfast and coffee (0400) and got her son to take me down to the start point at 0420 so i could save all my energy. She also arranged to have him pick me up at the end of the race and take me back in the evening. They are a very friendly and relaxed family and i can't thank them enough for their hospitality and for making my life that much easier over the days i spent there. The breakfast was really nice. - for what you pay you cannot go wrong. It felt like more of a traditional homestay than a hostel. So you can't expect the luxuries that most hostels provide but based on the price you pay common sense would give you that idea! Also the water is good for drinking as it comes straight from the volcano. They rent pushbikes for 50 cordoba for 24 hours so getting around is easy and if you have a quad or scooter you can go explore the local area Thanks Nelly and family you guys were awesome Matt UK (campion

Pros: This hostel is a few minutes from the town of Santa Cruz. The host was very friendly and accommodating. My cabin was great with a private shower and toilet. Breakfast was offered each day for a few dollars more. Everything was fresh. Nelly, my host helped me arrange kayaking, horseback riding and even took me to the local Ojos de Agua which is the local fresh spring water pool. She arranged a taxi back to the ferry so i did not have to take the bus. The view from the property is outstanding with both mountain volcanos in plain view. I will definitely return.

There were animal excrements everywhere and lots of insects (we had a scorpion in our bed the first night). The toilet was leaking so we had to turn on and off the water everytime we used it. First we thought what else could we accept for the cheap price of 4,20 Dollars per night as a couple and felt quite alright with the situation. When we checked out after three nights Nelly charged us double of the price we booked on booking.com! She explained that it was the fault of the website and a new law and that she cannot change the price options online. We know that this is not true and that it is just a very unfair way to attract guests to her hostel! Even if it was true we would expect her to contact us via mail after receiving our booking or at least inform us once we arrive at the place that the booked price is a mistake. In the end for the price paid we could have chosen a cleaner hostel!!!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location to hike Volcano Maderas or to go to the beach. You can borrow a bike. It’s in a countryside, run by a local family so don’t expact luxury hotel. It’s simple and quiet homestay with an amazing volcano view. Enjoy the most beautiful sunset sitting up in the tree at the backyard.
Cons: Be prepared for a lots of mosquitos and flies. Like on all Ometepe island. The beds have a mosquito net but it’s still impossible to escape them.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Nelly the host was very friendly and she made us this amazing dinner! We also had a very good night sleep, quiet and peaceful

Cons: Just had a great time!!
7.1 Good
Pros: I learned so much on what it takes to run an eco friendly hostel. Be prepared for the nomadic lifestyle. Overall grateful for the experience and the hostels determination.
Cons: The mosquito net was very dusty and I had difficulty breathing in bed
7.0 Good
Pros: Location on Ometepe; good restaurant
Cons: Quite a long trip to go up from the road to the hostel; eco toilets are a bit disgusting, low bunk beds; no chargers in rooms
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Waking up in nature, kind staff, amazing food
Cons: All good
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Living in nature! It was amazing to be so close to birds, frogs, insects, monkeys, trees and volcanic rocks. The free permaculture tour was so insightful, and made me appreciate the non-flush toilets, phone charging station and all the hard work that goes into.running this place. Free yoga and workshops. Close to Maderas and I hiked from the farm up to the Maderas Mirador. A BIG thanks to the gents who birthed the idea to build this place, and put all the hard work into to creating it and to all the staff and volunteers who help.keep it running. It really is a magical place!
Cons: My mosquito net had a few holes. It would be great if they could be checked and mended when need be. Food is quite pricey and there is no kitchen for guests to use.
5.0 Okay
Pros: the options in the restaurant were delicious and prices were okay. the whole hostel area is nice to wander around
Cons: I expected way more crops and fields to grow food. I only saw salads and herbs etc. most of the food offered in the restaurant is not grown there (oats, pasta, bread, also other veggies and fruitd etc.). they probably buy it from the neighbouring farmers which is also fine. my biggest concern is the sewage as there is no filtration system and all soap (not bio degrable) goes right into nature. I also slept in a fully open dorm. no walls, only a roof. it is a nice way to be close to nature. with strong wind and rain, everybody got wet during night time. the roof should be bigger to prevent that. seems like they didn't think of this when building it. they try hard to keep the open-minded, close-to-nature attitude but they can do way more to actually live up to that with easy steps. it seems like they keep the image of an organic farm to have tourists coming
6.0 Good
Pros: I loved sleeping outside with the sounds of nature. The setting is amazing and I really liked the off grid nature of the place. Food was fresh and healthy and the natural environment lovely.
Cons: Everything just seemed quite grubby, and I had to ask several times for clean bed sheets. There were not enough toilets and showers for the people staying. Food was very expensive and no kitchen facilities. Pizza night was fun but overshadowed by having to wait 2.5 hours for the pizza and nearly eating my arm off out of hunger (it finally came after 10pm, and thankfully was very good). Overall I found the vibe very cliquey and a big divide between the volunteers and guests, and I didn't feel so welcome. I think I'm not far enough up the hippie scale for this place. I booked for 2 nights but left after 1, partly due to limited transport and needing to take an early ferry, but this was also a good excuse to go. I also tried many times to arrange a volcano hike, which was eventually done late the morning I wanted to go, but was really overly hard work. There were lots of reports of thefts when I was there and the general security seemed pretty loose. Some people love it, but it wasn't for me
6.0 Good
Pros: The place is pretty special, the owner Daniele is very knowledgeable and passionate about the farm and the ambiance on the pizza night is great.
Cons: As others have mentioned, there is a theft problem. I left two shirts to dry outside and they were gone in the morning. When I asked at the reception if someone perhaps didn't take them by mistake, the lady there just blatantly told me that the cleaners probably stole them. In another cabin someone stole a bottle of rum as well and someone else "lost" sunglasses.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Love the vibes and the staff was amazing!
Cons: A bit narrow in the dorm, but all worked out fine
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing social hostel with loads of free workshops, yoga every morning and evening and an incredible cafe with freshly made treats. On the most beautiful perminculture farm in my 12 years of backpacking this is one of the best places I have ever stayed! Loved it!
Cons: Even the private rooms aren’t that private.

Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice area in front of hostel. Good food.
Cons: No air circulation in room. Very hot. No table or hooks in room.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Perfect location for us. The lake and beach are just crossed the road with a beautiful view of both volcanoes. We stayed in a private room that was very spacious, with both volcanoes and lake views! Be aware that it is pretty windy on that side of the island but personally we really enjoyed the breeze at night. The food was pretty good, and the plates were really generous, all for a very reasonable price!
Cons: There was a kitchenette in the room but no water coming out of the sink and no bottle of gas to cook... which for us was actually not a problem as we stayed only 3 nights and were not planning on using the kitchen!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everyone is helpful and friendly. The place and the room was really. We enjoyed our stay at the beach front with delicious food
Cons: Nothing to complain

7.0 Good
Pros: The lady who works there is super nice and a good kok. The place is just on the beach and has nice outdoor area to hang around. The room was simple but clean and the bed was super comfy. There is a moscitonet over the bed. We had the room with window to the lake and we could hear the waves to our room. I fell very ill during our stay and needet to leave to the hospital in the middle of our reservation days. The owner lady was kind and let us only pay for the nights we stayed there and booking comission.
Cons: The place is super isolated. There is only one or two places to eat. The hotel doesn't have water to sell so you need to walk quite a bit to find water somewhere and it is a bit pricey there. There is no light to the shared sink so you need to do your washing outdoor in the dark which is very unpleasant.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very nice and quiet place run by a local very lovely and helpful family, they will assist you with anything you need. Beautiful sunset
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner is friendly and the best cook we had in Nicaragua

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff is very kind. Food is very good. Bike and kayak rentals are convenient. Maderas volcano ascension can start from Merida. To conclude, we planned to stay 2 nights, we stayed 4!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: I stayed in the deluxe room with private bathroom and it was perfect for this tiny village stay. Directly in front of the water, kayaks available for exploration and gorgeous sunsets! The menu is not extensive but you have all the basics and everything was delicious!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Run by a lovely local family, directly on the shore of the lake. You can swim right there, or grab a kayak and explore the area. If you travel solo and with little luggage, ask them to pick you up from the port by motorbike, much cheaper than taxis. They also offer bike and scooter rental, and organise other tours for you. Great base for exploring the island.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: My girlfriend and i stayed here for 2 nights in the deluxe double room. with a private bathroom. We wanted to stay in Madeira, because then the San Jamon waterfalls are very close. On the island, we also went hiking on the Volcano Maderas aand the Ojo de Agua. The histel is quite nice and directly located at the lake/beach. The staff was very friendly. The room was clean and well decorated. The bathroom as well just simple and towels were provided. We could use the kitchen of the hostel, which was mostly clean and just simple equipped.
Cons: The trail to the hostel from the street is pretty tough with a scooter. By foot not really a problem, but because of the rocks and the conditions, the scooter has to driven quite confident. Otherwise you have to push the scooter the whole way. The staff was actually not really talkative and additionally, they didn’t tell us, what they actually offer. So for example, we didn’t know that they make a nice pancake breakfast or some dinner, if you wish, and also the opportunity to rent some kayaks from the hostel.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Los Chocoyos is a very beautiful and quiet place in Merida on Isla Ometepe. It is located at the beach of the lake which allows for an astonishing sunset :) the rooms and facilities are very nice. Also staff is super friendly and helpful - so is the y breakfast they make for guests. It may be a good idea to rent a scooter to be mobile. Loved my stay :) would definitely come back
