When you stay at Cabinas Cascada Rio Celeste in Rio Celeste, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Tenorio Volcano National Park. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The people in whose house I was living were sooo kind , it made it the nicest stay on my travel so far. They also cook coffee and food when you like, and the breakfast also was great (1 fruit plate and 1 gallo pinto plate and of course coffee). Can use their balcony to relax , room had a fridge , and the bed also was the one i ve slept in best in costa rica so far. Would love to stay there again!
Pros: Located very close to the entrance to Tenorio Volcano National Park. It is a guesthouse with very simple rooms but it is not a problem as people usually go there just to see the famous Rio Celeste for which one day is far enough. The hosts were very nice and helpful and prepared us a delicious breakfast. Although they spoke only Spanish, we had no problem to understand one another. There are many bird species in the area and the terrace where the breakfast is served is a nice observation point. On the contrary to what you may find in guide books the road leading to the National Park neighborhood is in perfect condition (from both directions) - probably it was paved not so long ago. It is only quite steep in some spots.
Cons: Nothing against the guesthouse but we had big problems with coverage from our mobile provider (Kolbi) in the area.
Pros: A quaint little family run lodge. Friendly staff. Great location if you are visiting the Rio Celeste waterfall. Basic accommodation with wonderful breakfast.
Pros: The rooms are small but very nice and authentic. The location is perfect if you want to visit Tenorio Volcano National Park, you can wall to the entrance in just 10 minutes. And the owner was great. She didn't really speak English, but the communication was still fine, the atmosphere was so warm, and the typical breakfast she prepared was very good.
Cons: The WiFi connection was very bad (but it did work after a while) and there is no AC in the rooms (which is still ok as it is not too hot in this region anyway.
Pros: Super clean. Close to park entrance. Good food. Friendly hosts. Fridge in room.
Cons: The rooms are small. Noise from the road is noticeable. Shower has hot water supplied by electric heater on shower head. Bed is just OK. Lighting was weak.
Pros: The host and her family are warm and welcoming. She made sure we had everything we needed. The room was very(!) clean and the bed pretty comfy. The water in the shower was hot (Tipp for electric showers in CR: Don't turn the water on completely - just a little bit to get hot/warm water. Less water pressure means higher temperature). There was no A/C but as it gets cooler at night that was fine. A (for us vegan) breakfast (Gallo Pinto, fruits, bread, jam, coffee) was included. It was really tasty - especially the coffee is awesome! The property is in walking distance to the Tenorio Volcano National Park which is great. There are some sodas (local restaurants) close by as well. We would definitely recommend to stay here when visiting the Tenorio NP.
Cons: The property is right next to the street - there isn't too much traffic at all but sometimes there was a pickup or truck driving by in the middle of the night. But that wasn't a real issue.
Pros: Location is phenomenal, a short walk from the park entrance for the Rio Celeste waterfall, and the rooms are beautifully painted! Miguel and Marjorie are wonderful hosts.
Pros: The two advantages are that it is very economical and it is a walkable distance from the entrance to RIO CELESTE Park.
Cons: it is a normal home in which rooms with views to the road are rented, the quality of the room, services and professionalism of the owners are too basic and even a bit careless. Regarding the price, we had been in other andplaces in COSTA RICA for the same money and with much better quality. It is still a good choice is you are just going to spend the night there to visit the park in the morning.
Pros: Friendly owners; family-run hotel/guesthouse located only 5 minutes from the park entrance. Good food and a lovely Tico style breakfast (rice with beans, scrambled eggs, toast with jam and fruits).
Cons: It’s located conveniently by the road to the national park which can get a bit noisy due to the traffic. However there aren’t too many cars and for us being so close to the park was definitely weighting out this point.
Pros: The breakfast was amazing and the room was super clean. Marjorie and her family were extremely friendly and helpful and the park entrance was very close by.
With a stay at Hotel de Campo Caño Negro in Caño Negro, you'll be on a lake, just steps from Cano Negro National Wildlife Refuge. Featured amenities include express check-in, dry cleaning/laundry services, and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: Beautiful accomodation, Boat tour was great, with experienced and sensitive captain!
Pros: great: setting in the middle of Mauro's botanical garden, pool with constantly refreshed, unchlorinated water, a piece of rainforest just across the road where you can go and watch wildlife such as spider monkeys, good offer of activities such as boat trips across the lagoon and down the Rio Frio river, and night walk with the owners son Andrea. Decent breakfest and dinner and the restaurant, though the best (and probably cheapest) dinner we had during our whole stay in Costa Rica was actually in the tiny open restaurant next to the police station near the main square.
Cons: not so great: Upon our arrival the lady who greeted us demanded the whole price for our two-night stay before we had even seen the room, without introducing herself, without giving us a receipt and although it said in the description that credit cards are accepted. It later turned out that the lady was actually the owner's wife and that she did what she did because the internet was not working due to an earlier thunderstorm, but still - she could have explained and discussed the situation instead of stripping us of our cash in a place where it takes 1,5 hours to drive to the next ATM and back (Los Chiles). Our room turned out to be pretty small and had only 1 reading lamp for four beds, also it had no mosquito nets on the beds nor on the windows. We had our own nets which we put up so we didn't mind, but if you go there and don't have your own net, ask for a cabina with moskito nets because the next mosquito is never far out there. To wrap it up - for the standard we had, we found Hotel de Campo pretty pricy compared with other places.
Pros: This is a great place for birdwatching - the small lake attracts many species.
Cons: The wifi is weak.
Pros: Wildlife, staff was excellent ..took us on personalized tours. Jeffrey, as a guide was excellent . Anna was warm and welcoming
Cons: Limited food choices
Pros: Nice hotel. Excellent restaurant. Good Costa Rican breakfast. We booked e private eco boat tour on the Rio Frio and had an excellent guide Lucas. We really recommend the hotel and the boat tour.
Pros: Clean and large room. Friendly staff and wonderful boat tour.
Pros: Location, staff, activities, dining area, gardens, lagoon, air conditioning, menu options, food portion sizes, selection of juices.
Cons: Wifi only at reception
Pros: We only stayed one night. Good location to the boat tours on the river and we also arranged a tour to the nearby Medio queso wetlands.- which was our main reason to visit and it was awesome. The room was comfy it had ac unit. The pool looked nice but I missed a chance to use it. If your in the area I recommend 'Chambita tours' he's on Facebook and is great choice for your private river trips. the other boats can get loaded up.!
Cons: The roads in and out of Cano negro are slow and bumpy gravels roads. be prepared for a couple hours at 15-20 kmph!
Pros: This was our 4th time staying at Hotel de Campo, this time staying 8 nights. We return because we love the area, the rooms are great, the staff friendly and very helpful. We get up and leave very early so they make accommodations for us with coffee and food. The grounds are terrific, well groomed and usually with many birds and other creatures to see and photograph. Food at the restaurant is reasonably priced and good.
Cons: Their septic system needs some work.
Pros: The pool and room were great! The meals in the restaurant were very good and juices made from fruit off the property were really tasty. Staff are really friendly and helpful. It is a bit out of the way but we were so happy to go - we wanted to see lots of birds and caimans and we were not disappointed. We went when the water is probably at its lowest and it was still amazing. Would love to come back in the wet season.
Boasting a tour desk, this property also provides guests with a children's playground. The accommodation features a shared kitchen and free WiFi. The rooms at Posada Rural Oasis are fitted with a seating area, a TV with cable channels, a kitchenette, a dining area and a private bathroom with free toiletries and a shower. The units will provide guests with a wardrobe and a kettle. Guests at the inn will be able to enjoy activities in and around Caño Negro, like hiking.
Pros: Very very kind people, helping you with booking trips in Caño negro and organized a horse trip for us! Amazing garden and surrounded park, host gives private tour through garden and surround! Well tasting breakfast for short money available! Located 800m from supermarket, coming from Los Chiles, after a 20km dusty but under good conditions road
Pros: Very nice dueños! Good value for the price.
Cons: The house dog remaines chained almost all day. He is not aggresive and there is absolutely no reason why this poor creature cannot be freed all day...
Pros: The owner waited up for me, as I arrived a bit late, and offered to feed me. The room was clean, there was hot water, and I was very comfortable. The rate was very low and I was very happy overall. They also got in touch with my nature guide and gave me instructions on where to meet him. In the morning, they got up and opened the gate early so I could get out and recommended some local sodas at which to get breakfast. Very good experience...at $18US this location cannot be beat.
Pros: Good bed, wonderful surrounding, nice staff, good breakfast.
Pros: They have a trail through their farm into some thin second growth forest.
Cons: The location provided by Booking.com is totally wrong. Off by almost 8km! The property was very noisy, most generated by the children that live there. No English spoken by anyone.
Pros: Kind and welcoming hosts, beautiful natural surroundings, the sounds in the night were unbeatable. All the commodities, small kitchen, which we could use. For the money asked it was simply perfect. The area is great, by the way. If you are planning a trip, I highly recommend booking 2 nights.
Cons: This was of no importance to us but probably some guests should find it important that owners do not speak English. Also if you are not into simple rural environment this place is not for you. Our group, however, did not find any fault
Pros: Mrs ALBA the owner was extremely kind. All was perfectly clean. Breakfast at additional small price delicious. She can book a nice tour at Cano Negro nature reserve
Cons: All perfect
Pros: Good locarion. A nice short trail near the accomodation. Nice people.
Pros: Had a great stay. Really appreciated the visit to the Finca and to see all the birds and so many native trees. Thanks a lot for your hospitality!
Pros: The place is very clean and tidy both inside and outside, and set in lovely gardens with a pathway through the forest to the rear of the property. The mother and daughter who managed the place during my stay were very hospitable, friendly, and helpful. Guests have a kitchen complete with a fridge, coffee maker, pots and pans, and cutlery and crockery. Five minutes walk away in the direction of the lagoon is a small restaurant serving the usual Costa Rican fare, and next door to it is a small but useful grocery store. I looked but didn't find any bread, but perhaps it comes in early in the morning and is sold out by the afternoon. If you need it, bring your own with you. Oasis is within easy walking distance of the lagoon and nature reserves and is considerably cheaper than the hotels close to the reserves.
Cons: I was travelling from Liberia to Los Chiles by bus (actually four different buses), and Oasis was a perfect place for me to stay before travelling on to the Costa Rica/Nicaragua border. Everything was positive with no negatives at all.
When you stay at Hotel Sueño Real Rio Celeste in Rio Celeste, you'll be on a river, you'll be a 14-minute drive from Tenorio Volcano National Park. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services and a 24-hour front desk. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available 24 hours), and free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: New, clean, comfortable beds, you can see the Rio Celeste river at the back of the property, breakfast was very good.
Cons: Only suggestion I have would be brighter lights in the bathroom.
Pros: The hotel are just a few meters from an access to Rio Celeste. I didn't imagine it could be so close, but could spend the day in the farm of the property (another plus) and of course around the river. The park and waterfalls are 20 minutes by car. Breakfast was amazing!
Pros: The owners were friendly and proud of their beautiful land and working farm. The swimming spot and picnic area are lovely.
Cons: It was more like a motel than a hotel in the layout. Practical, but not very charming.
Pros: Clean and nice room.
Cons: We arrived late and took us like 1hr to get someone up in reception in order to check in. When I called they said the check in service was 24hrs. There was no guard in the entrance no one we could ask for help. The restaurant doesn't have natural drinks nor orange juice.
With a stay at Natural Lodge Caño Negro in Caño Negro, you'll be on a river, just steps from Cano Negro National Wildlife Refuge. Featured amenities include express check-in, dry cleaning/laundry services, and laundry facilities. Free self parking is available onsite.
Pros: The lodge was set in a beautiful setting with many native plants. Many of them were labeled. Staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a boat tour with Jimmy at 8am on the 2nd day and we saw many animals including many types of birds, iguanas, bats, monkeys, about 100 Caimans and a sloth which is not so commonly seen. The town is very small, so we soon ran out of things to do.
Cons: Lack of things to do. Perhaps, the facility could offer a simple cooking class or crafts session for guests. That will definitely be a bonus.
Pros: The room was comfortable, although bare, and the location good. The pool was very nice. We had an excellent boat trip with a very good guide organised by the hotel. The breakfast was good.
Cons: The hotel was almost empty and had an air of being not quite finished. The whole place was very sterile with no maps, pictures, or information in the rooms or public areas. The restaurant seemed expensive and had no atmosphere ( it didn't help that there were hardly any guests) There was no wifi in the room but the wifi they offered in the public areas was very slow and wouldn't download anything. The staff were very pleasant but seemed young and inexperienced.
Pros: The biggest attraction of this hotel for me is its location in a wildlife refuge teeming with birds and wetland animals like caimans and turtles. The little village of Caño Negro is charming, and walking from the hotel to the river was delightful. The rooms are spare but spacious and private. The restaurant is quite good, and the bar area has sofas and tables that make a nice gathering spot. There's a nice pool also. The hotel arranged our boat tours, which were a great way to see the birds and animals. There is wifi, though only in the restaurant.
Pros: Birds on premises were good.
Cons: Hot water in shower was either cold or lukewarm-not pleasant. Paid for a professional guide on boat tour and the waitress at the hotel was the guide. She didn't see things and didn't ID some birds correctly. Boat didn't have a top and I wasn't told that ahead of time so I could dress appropriately. Hotel was extremely overpriced because they cut corners wherever they could such as poor quality meat or no meat at the breakfast buffet (buffet was only when a bus load of people arrived). Almost all other lodges have drinking water available all day (Natural Lodge does not) Some lodges also provide juice and coffee free of charge (all day). Natural Lodge charges for coffee when it isn't mealtime and their cups are very small (they don't tell you it's an extra charge). Had to ask for more coffee at breakfast. They catered to bus loads of people and not other couples that stayed there. At mealtime service was slow and I asked for water twice and didn't get it. Didn't get a receipt after paying bill in full. Don't stay here!!!! Stay at lodge down the street.
Pros: Location is perfect. Very friendly staff, helpful when we left something behind
Cons: Pool lights were off at night
Pros: Staff went out of their way to make sure we had really good bird sightings and to arrange good excursions for us.
Cons: The "entrance yard" was rather low key - but we were soon put at our ease!...
Pros: Location and tours offered by staff were amazing. Recorded bird and monkey noises at the river early in the morning were over the top!
Pros: Amazing location. Super sweet and helpful staff. Jimmy, our bird guide, was excellent. The food was simple but well prepared and delicious. The pool was cool and clean and very much appreciated in the heat.
Cons: I would have appreciated a screen on the main door so that we could have left the door open and not relied entirely on AC (but glad there was AC).
Pros: This is an AMAZING place, set in true CR. The lodge is a true naturalist lodge in the wild. I highly recommend taking tours with Jimmy who gave my 12 year old son and I two river excursions of a lifetime. Take an early morning tour 6am AND the evening tour as the sections of river are quite different! Make no mistake this is not a fancy resort rather a REAL experience...
Pros: The property is relatively clean and secure
Cons: The cost for the room of $130 per night in relation to whats received is not comparible. Its not a bad hotel, only very coztly for very few amenities and comfort. Beds are terrible, bad design on room placement designs (far), pillows very cheap, no television or internet.
