We liked the fact that it was a secluded and quiet beach hotel. If you want to stay away from noisy and overcrowded beaches, read a book in a hammock while the sun goes down, this is certainly a hotel to consider. The staff was very kind and attentive!
The food, even though it always tasted good, was not varied enough. Also, the portions felt small in general, especially the breakfast. Considering the number of tropical fruits in the area these tiny cups with a few pieces were nothing special. We expected more there, a buffet maybe with various things to choose from, fresh juices, eggs, yogurt, etc. By the time it was lunchtime, sure enough, all guests were quickly reunited at the table, and since there are no restaurants or snack shops in the area you are definitely going to order lunch and dinner at the hotel. Again, the food is good, after 3 days however we were clearly bored by the choices, especially considering the many interesting dishes Colombia has to offer. Last but not least, the beach did not meet our expectations. It does state on booking: “During rainy season, Barbacoa Bay can become opaque or muddy due to the freshwater of a nearby river that brings sediment into the bay.” I came across this after making the reservation and this is no tiny detail. I don’t know if it was the rainy season, we didn’t spot a single cloud during our stay in Cartagena and Isla Barú in January, but the water besides being muddy did feel dirty at times, especially in the mornings when you could see layers of foam close to the shore. This hotel has a lot of atmosphere, yes. It is quiet, secluded, and has beautiful facilities, yes. The fact that it is highly rated on booking.com certainly influenced our decision to make a non-refundable reservation. We believe this hotel is a little overpriced considering the meager breakfast and insufficient food choices. Also in comparison to other “boutique” hotels we’ve visited in Colombia in the past. Our stay at Hotel Play Manglares was pleasant overall, we had a good time, but we are not coming back.
The beach was beautiful and calm. The location was fantastic. The food was very tasty. The open air room and shower were a unique experience. The mosquito net around the bed worked really well. The fresh local fruits were delicious.
The food options were a bit repetitive on our longer stay with main ingredients always being fish, shrimps and sometimes chicken. Dessert was always only ice cream.
We had an amazing stay at Playa Manglares in Isla Barú. The facilities were even more beautiful than the photos and the hosts were so accommodating. If you’re looking for a place to truly unwind and relax, this is it.
An exquisite small family-run hotel with a private beach. I stayed in room 3 top floor, it was fabulous, spacious and had fantastic views from two balconies! Olga the host was so sweet.
