The Covington Houseboat - Saint Paul - Building
1
9.6 Excellent (71 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Stay the night on the Mississippi River – literally – at the Covington Inn. This houseboat is trimmed stem to stern in mahogany, brass and bronze, extending to guests the elegant comfort once reserved aboard historic work vessels for company executives and VIPs. Windows and portals in the boat's tiered design draw light into each room. Sleeping quarters feature a mix of ingenious built-in cabinets with simple furnishings from the Covington's work era. Salvaged fixtures, nautical antiques and historic art provide tasteful reminders of the river and the inn's past life. Sitting permanently moored within the reflection of downtown St. Paul's towering skyline, The Capitol, museums, theater, fine dining and shopping wait just across the bridge. Offering a place for both a quiet getaway and the city spree, the Covington does it all. Beyond the privacy of the staterooms, the salon provides a comfortable gathering place. Lit with clerestory windows and furnished with fireside couches and window-front tables, the salon offers a great place for breakfasting, letter writing and browsing through the Covington library of historic river and shipping books. Our breakfasts, cooked in the boat's galley, pamper you with just a touch of the gourmet while fueling a full-day's exploration.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was by far the best I've ever had in either a hotel or a bed and breakfast. Liz is the perfect hostess, she took such good care of us! She listened to my husband's old jokes, and even laughed. She made an excellent recommendation for a Mexican meal. She even let us spoil her adorable dog. For dog lovers like us, being able to pet Jay Jay was an added perk.
Cons: The weather was the only thing that wasn't perfect. We had one cold rainy day, but even then it was fun to sit in our cozy room and watch the river.

Pros: Breakfast was excellent with a broad array of options.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: scenery - able to watch airport activity. Easy check in from 3rd floor. Cool decor
Cons: parking - walk long ways from parking to lobby.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Decor was modern and appealing.
Cons: They did not plan for enough shuttles and 3 different staff gave us 3 different solutions to the problem. It ended up working out OK, as they found another shuttle, but the first response was “Sorry we are booked.” As convenience was the only reason I booked there, it was not a suitable response.

Cons: The pub restaurant was OK but the atmosphere was uncomfortable.
9.3 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: I will never shut up about how amazing this place is. Been on a road for three weeks driving through USA and omg this place is so beautiful. I will come back soon and will recommend this place to everyone. Rooms are spacious, clean and beds are some of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever laid in. Pillows are magical. Bathroom and the whole entire room and hotel is spotless clean. It’s magical place. Mall of America is few minutes away and hotel provides a free shuttle. Airport is right next door too and we saw planes take off all day! Couldn’t hear them but we saw them. Best sleep I had in last three weeks. Wow!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The lounge are was a blast! So many games/activities to do - not just the usual pool table and foosball but life size Scrabble, carpet pool, at least 50 board games to choose from. Upscale/upbeat atmosphere. Great for kids too!
Cons: When I booked a hotel in this area I did not expect to pay for parking, I was very disappointed to find out hotel guests had to pay the regular airport parking rate ($29/day). I understand it's the only place to park, it was just a surprise.
6.8 Good
Cons: The nearly $200 "room" I rented didn't come with a bed! They gave me and my two kids half a suite with a pull-out sofa!
7.5 Good
Pros: The beds were comfy.
Cons: We were wrongly charged $87.00 for a $45.00 meal at the grill that we paid for in cash and tipped the waitress generously (like 21%). When I called the Billing department i was on hold for a LONG time, the lady was short with me when she spoke to me, and I couldn't hear or understand her. She told me there was nothing she could do for me and she hung up on me when I was still talking to her. When we came back to the hotel the receptionist helped us and said we would get a full refund for that $87.00. I am still waiting for my refund. But the stay itself was great.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: The front desk staff is amazing
Cons: We stayed 3 nights and they didn’t take out the garbage the entire stay
6.8 Good
Cons: The two people working the front desk seemed very rude. First there must have been a mistake through the booking agency and the names were switched around between the guest and myself which I made the reservation. The lady proceded to tell me that I screwed up and I shouldn't use a booking site. Then when I asked if it was possible to leave my car at the hotel as we would be returning from our flight 4 days later and possibly staying another night at your hotel the lady rudely said that "I cant just stay there for free" instead of explaining the cost to park there. I then decided that I will just pay to park at the airport and not stay in your hotel upon our return.

Pros: Our purpose was Mall of America so the walking distance was perfect. The room was clean and spacious with amazing vanity lighting. The breakfast had plenty to choose from.
Cons: Room was non-smoking but still smelled like it had been a smoking room at one time. If it wasn't, the air handling system brought the smoke in. It wasn't an extreme smell but it didn't give a great impression when walking in the room. Also, If I knew to ask ahead of time I would have requested a room in the main hallway closer to the elevator. We were furthest away from elevator down a very long hall and down another small hallway. It felt very remote so it completely freaked my young daughter out once when a very large male hotel customer got out on the same floor as us and seemed to "follow us" almost to our room (coincidentally he had a room only a few rooms away from ours so all was well). But it did also make me nervous for a second given the floor was so quiet it seemed like no-one would have heard anything if something nefarious did happen. Nothing you can really do about that, just something we have to remember for next time.

Pros: Very nice hotel near Union Depot which was important to us since we traveled by train. Nice staff. Very big suite with an extra bedroom. Luxurious bathroom and a kitchenette. And breakfast was complimentary ! Very clean. And they were very accommodating about a late check out.
Cons: We couldn’t use the kitchenette since it had no tableware and cutlery. When you book a room as a family I don’t understand that you have to make your own bed in a hotel.
8.8 Excellent
Cons: ten minutes before we arrived I received a call saying they were over-booked and were putting us in a best western. This also happened last year!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were HUGE!!!
Cons: Upon check in, the front desk lady wrote the wrong room # on our keycards. Had to come back down after having another patron open the door to "our" room. Manager caught the mistake right away.

Cons: Nothing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The space
Cons: Families need something like this for space but more affordable
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All the front desk staff were very helpful and polite with the exception of two experiences mentioned below. I will particularly point out that Chris, Max, Hugo, Camilla and Kyle were very professional, polite and went out of their way to help make my stay as pleasant as possible. That was enough of a balance from my negative experience to say I would definitely and probably will stay again.
Cons: A little hiccup with housekeeping staff not fully respecting/acknowledging my Do Not Disturb sign but it was resolved. They would try to initiate cleaning and just flat out ignore the sign. This happened about 5 times, so I did get very irritated. Chris, the manager, handled it very well and there were no problems afterwards. Also not a huge deal, but a front desk agent with curly hair (didn't catch her name) was in one of those moods I call, "I will barely help you but I will help you and I will stare at you disapprovingly like you committed a crime." Good old passive agressive Minnesotans! That's the only front desk agent that just immediately treated me semi-hostile without any provocation whatsoever. That's the kind of thing that inspires people to write reviews.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very modern facility, quiet and clean
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything really very clean and comfortable along with professional and polite staff.
Cons: Breakfast was your standard fare of stuff I just don't want to eat. I just went to Starbucks everyday for breakfast and coffee. I am spoiled I suppose and distrust any type of buffet where people who aren't staff are touching everything you touch. What if that greasy guy in front of you doesn't wash his hands after he goes #2 ??? Real life is full of mysteries!!!
10.0 Excellent
Cons: The size of the room and the kitchen in the room. The service, location and all the other facilities in the place.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Location
Cons: In renovation parking limited
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything-spacious rooms-great staff very relaxing
Cons: Loved everything
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Location is kind of off the beaten path but overall it was worth the extra 4-5 miles. The room was amazing. Very clean, comfortable, and modernized. The size of the room was unexpected, very large. I appreciated the full fridge and microwave. The hallways were unlike any that I've seen before, surprisingly very well lit, bright and cheery. Staff was friendly and attentive. I even received 2 complimentary bottled waters upon check in. Check in and out process was smooth. I would definitely stay again.
Cons: While I appreciated the complimentary breakfast, could use a little more variety. I've never seen microwavable breakfast sandwiches at a hotel before. I've always seen fresh scrambled eggs and bacon/sausage at the very least. So I stuck with the oatmeal for 3 days. Other than that I was very impressed and enjoyed the stay.
7.0 Good
Pros: The breakfast was good and rooms were clean
Cons: The bed was a hard bed, not soft at all. I had a view of the back of the building where all the outbuildings are, also of the interstate. All I heard all night long was people getting on the gas getting on the interstate...sucked.

Pros: location and access to restaurants and MALL OF AMERICA

8.8 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was very clean and quiet. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were good sized. We enjoyed the pool facilities, like the rest of the hotel the pool area was very clean. Fresh cookies in the evening!
Cons: The setup of the breakfast area could use some improvement. Most of the hot breakfast items required a microwave or the waffle iron and the lines to use these would block other breakfast item access and the tables right by the breakfast items. The selection for breakfast items also wasn't as good as some other places.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The size and configuration of the room.
Cons: The breakfast.

Pros: We were flying in from Boston into Minnesota to visit Mall of America and had booked our hotel stay at the Hilton almost two months prior. The week we were scheduled to fly in there was a huge storm in MN. I was in constant communication with the hotel and they assured us our reservation would stay intact and I was grateful for that. We had no intention of renting a vehicle but instead use the complimentary shuttle service to commute back and fourth from the hotel to the mall. All the shuttle drivers were personable, prompt, and professional. The grounds, lobby, restaurant, and bar areas were in impeccable. Everyday we came down to the lobby area there was a new batch of different fruit infused water( that was always a nice treat). We did room service for one night out of our 4 night stay and the delivery time was quicker than expected and the food was good (burger, pizza, and beer). Our family of 3 required special accommodations upon check out and The Hilton had no reservations about fufilling our request. The shuttle drivers, front desk, and the manager all welcomed us back in the future and we hope to do just that (in warmer weather of course). Thank you Hilton-Bloomington

8.8 Excellent
Pros: It's a Hampton Inn. You know what to expect and you get it. This one is no different. Bill at the front desk was a very helpful sort, like a lot of folks in Minneapolis. I wish I could say more but Hampton Inns are.... utterly predictable, and this one did a good job of being a Hampton Inn. (I was at one in Costa RIca, and it followed the formula - I swear they brought in breakfast fixings from the states.)
Cons: Starting to sour a bit on the Hampton breakfast - served with a smile but it's still mostly microwave stuff. (Fairfield Inn had someone actually making eggs in a skillet, last time I was there.) Oatmeal was watery, which isn't the norm. Hey Hilton Corporate, it's 2019, it's not hard to go get a decent loaf of bread from the store, one that has like nuts and oats and texture and stuff. Americana is great but a little change would be good.

Thanks for an unexpected and lovely stay. We will never stay elsewhere if at all possible.

Pros: Very homey and unique
Cons: No
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Asking for two queen beds vs a king was easy
Cons: I was not happy the bar closed at 12 and not 2am. Public restroom was a disgusting mess Sunday morning at 9:15. I would expect cleaning to occur before that
6.0 Good
Pros: Everything was newly renovated. Very nice!
Cons: We had an adjoining room. There was no sound barrier. Our neighbors weren't loud, but we could hear their conversations and TV plain as day. This caused me not to sleep since they were talking until 1:00am and then had their TV on the rest of the night.
2.0 Mediocre
Pros: Price
Cons: They gave me a room that was in the middle of 10 families and kids screaming and running up and down the halls unsupervised. This is a 2.5 star hotel claiming to be a four star hotel. It’s an old Crowne Plaza with lipstick on. The outside looks ver

8.2 Excellent
Cons: Paid extra for a room with a city view. We were given a room on the first floor that looked out at a parking lot and gas station.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The check in process was easy, and our request for an additional bed was handled was aplomb. We got a room intended for wheelchair disabled persons, so the room was fantastically spacious. The bathroom was a joy with all the hand rails. This hotel is only 6 months old, so everything is new, including numerous charging outlets. Our room had a fully stocked kitchen with full size fridge, oven, dish washer, stove, and microwave, and food was available to buy in the reception area. The bed and pull out sofa were soft and luxurious. I have never slept so well in a hotel. There is an exercise room and indoor swimming pool. There was a good Italian restaurant in within easy walking distance. Checkout was easy. The receptionist was awesome. I forgot my hat with my irreplaceable collection of pins on it. When I phoned from Union station, she went to the room, found it, and phoned me to ask for my address to mail it to me.
Cons: Nothing. Everything was terrific!

Pros: The breakfast was definitely a step up here than the other experiences I’ve had at other hotels. The bed was super comfortable, the service was top notch and I really enjoyed my stay.
Cons: Only thing that could of been better is if I didn’t get sick during my trip. Otherwise, the whole trip was very enjoyable for my first time in St. Paul and I’m definitely saving this location for future visits.
