The Sandy Duck - Falmouth - Building
2
9.8 Excellent (136 reviews)
Overview Reviews
On a hill overlooking Falmouth Bay, boutique B&B The Sandy Duck combines sleek Scandinavian design with sea views and warm, home-from-home hospitality. Owner and manager Freyja earned her hosting stripes crewing aboard luxury yachts before she settled on the Cornish coast, transforming this Edwardian townhouse into a stylish, seven-room bolthole. Now, the interiors are painted in soothing shades and filled with a medley of modern Danish design, hand-picked antiques and artworks by her own family, creating rooms that are as inviting on a fresh January morning as they are on a hot summer’s day.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: very good choice of cold and cooked breakfasts. dining experience was very relaxed.
Cons: Long wait for cooked breakfast Other guests taking mobile phone call in the dining area Coffee could have been stronger
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast is excellent. I particularly like the avocado and scrambled eggs on toast. Everything is fresh and of good quality. Room 1 is small, but comfortable, with an excellent shower, a window banquette, and a radio playing classical music upon our arrival. We love the Meraki toiletries in big pump bottles, and the thermos of cold milk on the coffee tray. There was plenty of room for our clothes in the wardrobe and dresser. The decor is lovely, both in the fresh, clean breakfast room, the cosy and warm living room and in the simple but stylish bedrooms. The best bit is the easy and friendly interaction with owner Freyja and her staff, all of whom are lovely.
Cons: We didn't have any problems. Any requests or comments were addressed immediately.

Pros: Probably the freshest, best-tasting breakfast I've ever had at a B&B. Beautiful clean room with a wonderful view of the sea over Falmouth. Truly beautiful B&B.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and light, Jo and Dave were very friendly, great breakfast. Good location to walk into town.
Cons: Only stayed for one night, nothing to dislike really.
5.4 Okay
Pros: We liked the location as it was not too far from main attractions by car. Breakfast was also not too bad. Joe and David were lovely and polite at any time. We appreciated their few suggestions regarding restaurants and surrounding area places to visit and the fact they allowed us to check-in a bit earlier than the allowed times (4 - 7pm only).
Cons: Unfortunately, temperature control of shower was not working: only we could get extremity hot or cold water. Strict time made our staying a bit stressful, considering we were on holidays: - Breakfast was offered only between 8 - 8.45am only and - Check-in possible between 4 - 7pm, even if we were lucky and could check-in a bit early. Not suitable for couples or if you want no constraints of time and money, considering they are not the cheapest alternative in the area.

Pros: As frequent international travellers we have stated in a lot of hotels and apartments and this is one of the best places we've stayed. Everything is of the highest quality. From the furnishing to the excellent customer service by the owners. As it is apartment accommodation it feels like a luxurious ’home away from home’. As late risers we loved the generous breakfast basket that had everything that you can think of for a continental breakfast plus some eggs if you wanted to cook in the fully equipped kitchen. Living space, bedroom and bathroom huge and super clean. Lovely huge fluffy towels and lovely bathroom amenities. All the mod-cons everywhere. Downstairs amazing honesty bar, outside area with BBQ and chill out/sunbathing areas and not forgetting the hot-tub. It's great for couples but also perfect for singles staying for business or pleasure. You can be as sociable or private as you choose with the owners and other guests. Pros: We couldn't fault our stay in any way, even the sun shone brightly for the duration! Liz and her other half (sorry we can't remember his name) were top notch as was Liz's mum who booked us in. Breakfasts of scrambled eggs and bacon were heavenly. Highly recommended! We also had a late evening in the lounge with other guests and that was an unexpected bonus. Having an outside patio to use was another great feature.

10.0 Excellent
As you can probably tell by now we loved our stay. Thank you.

Pros: Staff were helpful. Garden is lovely
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The garden is absolutely stunning and it's lovely and quiet. The beds in the triple room were incredibly comfortable and there's a full size fridge in the room.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Room was spacious, lovely views, beds very comfy and nice size on suite, fresh milk in room.
Cons: very small bottle of wine to share, TV reception poor
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location is great and the front garden is a great showcase for the property. The rooms are very clean.
Cons: The single room does not have an en-suite, which is advertised, with the shower and hand basin being in the room. The toilet is nearby and whilst a little inconvenient to go to, particularly at night, the main issue is that it has no hand washing facilities. There is also restricted space for opening the toilet door. The balcony is delightful but it is not advertised that it is a shared facility with two other rooms, and that when other people are sitting on the balcony right in front of the door to the single room this can affect your privacy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: location was perfect, near the beach. breakfast, will give you what you ask for. staff lovely.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We were in the Beachcomber room . Fabulous with a little balcony, viewing chairs. Very clean, great amenities included as well as a small bottle of red wine! Breakfast was included and sumptuous. Plenty of choice. Staff lovely. Location excellent with a 6 min walk to town centre and harbour. 1 min walk to sea. Fabulous talk along the coastline. Highly recommend this quaint establishment.
Cons: No lift and parking was on the street. Found a park easy and staff offered to help with luggage.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Staff really nice Bedroom and bed really comfortable and with a Great balcony. Excellent breakfast. Incredible garden (exotic!)
Cons: Not being able to check in when we arrived, having to phone for assistance. Rolls of underlay lying in the corridor and Wood and flooring behind the sofa in the hallway (because they are renovating throughout).
6.3 Good
Pros: The staff were nice and helpful and it was clean. The breakfast was nice. The location was excellent. There were some nice touches like wine and fresh milk in the rooms. It's a basic slightly dated hotel at Cornwall prices.
Cons: It was very noisy, not from outside, but you could hear every footstep on the hallways and they are renovating with work starting about 9am so this was also noisy. The double bed was quite small. All in all, we didn't sleep massively well at all.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location and bedroom quality
Cons: Staff skills and lack of car parking.
7.0 Good
Pros: The breakfast was good and the staff at hand to top up the coffee. A varied selection of dishes to please everyone.
Cons: The room was comfortable but somewhat on the small side. So many cushions and pillows on the beds and hardly anywhere to put them. Soon there will be no sea-view from this hotel as a large block of flats is being constructed right in front between the hotel and beach.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Location and the breakfast was good.
Cons: Plumbing jumped constantly hot and cold☹️ could use a magnifying mirror in the dark bathroom.
8.0 Excellent
Cons: Hot items on the buffet breakfast were luke warm, and cold before they could be consumed.
7.0 Good
Pros: Good quality and choice for breakfast. Quick and friendly service. Good food. Plenty of seated areas to relax in. Separate entrance for Captain's House. Parking. Hot water and clean changing rooms for pool.
Cons: Need to be able to control heating in the room as the radiator was on full blast but no valve, and on at odd times. The amount charged for the new spa facilities. Too many people from outside the hotel use the other pool and spa - lane swimmers not really appropriate for such a small pool. Ugly monstrosity being built in the front yard! Surprised planning permission was given for such a high building. Totally changes the atmosphere of the whole area. If the new residents use the spa facilities too it will be far too busy...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything, every detail thought about in room.
Cons: new build in sea view.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very relaxing!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous staff and hotel facilities were amazing best spa ive visited and I’ve been to lots
Cons: When arrived was given wrong room type and waited a hour to be relocated to the correct room type
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The room actually had a view over the beach from its balcony, though not advertised as such. In fact, though the hotel were very clear and apologised that building works were obscuring the sea views, they didn't intrude on us. Staff were, without exception, helpful and friendly. The pool and sauna were great.
Cons: The hotel needed reminding that one of us was non dairy to get the milk for drinks in the room. Also the breakfast was missing the veggie sausages which, we were told, 'hadn't been delivered'. That apart there was a good selection available for a near vegan.

6.7 Good
Pros: Location good. Staff very helpful and professional. Breakfast good. Room clean and tidy.
Cons: Hotel tired and requires updating, rather faded grandeur. Our room on the 4th floor with a sea view, but only one small window. One of the three smallest rooms on this floor, although acceptable for one night, it would not be if staying longer. I do not believe this room to be worth the £135 charge even though it does have a sea view.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything, great location within Falmouth and excellent service and breakfast too
9.6 Excellent
Pros: We returned to where we spent our honeymoon 40 years ago and it didn’t let us down, a big thank you. I think the town has changed more than the hotel.
Cons: Maybe the evening meal could have been a bit better organised, people seemed to wait a long time for parts of meals.

Cons: Slow service in restaurant
5.0 Okay
Pros: Nice building
Cons: Two single beds pushed together when advertised as a 'double' - very uncomfortable! Especially considering the price. Loud music until midnight, as we were staying above the function room apparently! Sloppy breakfast service. All a big disappointment
