Pros: Enchanting position on the Loir excellent breakfast in beautifully appointed room. A place with style.

Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very welcoming and a great breakfast
9.5 Excellent
Pros: What a wonderful site being in the old priory behind thick double doors, on the banks of the Loire at Montsoreau near the confluence with la Vienne at Candes St Martin. We parked across the quiet road from it on the river’s edge from where we saw, one day, flights of cormoran, big and little egrets fishing in the shallows and gulls and swans, marking the coming of winter, according to our host. Our room had an independent entrance off the upper level garden and was quiet and comfortable and well appointed with sofas and a comfortable bed as well as an adequate shower room/ toilet. Our host was very kindly in many ways, not least in providing us with a magnificent breakfast everyday but also in sorting out a minor tangle with the room booking so we could stay for all four nights in one room. She also told us about the range of nearby restaurants, the attractions of nearby Chinon, and the local markets in Montsoreau. It made us feel very welcome. Merci, madame!
Cons: Nothing
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Great breakfast, quite and private balcony with a garden view, walking distance to a great restaurant.
Cons: not much.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect, quirky room and amazing breakfast, the hosts were lovely, friendly and very helpful. I wish all hosts were that nice.
Cons: Nothing to dislike.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great Marie and her family were very welcoming, and treated us like VIPs. Also very accommodating with breakfast, my wife has a gluten allergy and it was no problem, Marie provided alternatives for her. Highly recommend for a short stay, beautiful house and location. 5 *
Cons: The weather
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very warm and friendly host, comfortable bed, adequate breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: An absolute gem. Great location, very private room with private patio, friendly owners, nice breakfast. A pleasant restaurant with an outside garden is only a short walk away.
Cons: The room is overcrowded with “nic-nacs” but is spacious, comfortable and private.
Overview Reviews
See hotel page There's a unique place on the Maine-et-Loire map: Le Domaine de Mestr, The Originals Relais. This hotel at the edge of Fontevraud lAbbaye village blends ancient and more recent history, with the rich Abbey and a family associated with the estate since 1791 both featuring in its past. Marie Amlie de Courcy and her family welcome guests to this charming hotel full of memories with 16 comfortable bedrooms and delicious home-made cuisine.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The original style of bed room in medieval... A big fun to stay in one of those rooms! Parking is very convenient. The hotel itself is a good place for tourist. There is a lovely soap musuem and soap shop. The surroundings are also fantastic!
Cons: There is no shower curtain in bathroom...and the shower hand is ridiculously short...which means you need to sit to shower...Otherwise it should have my full points.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great renovation with welcoming staff
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Relaxed, friendly family atmosphere with mother cooking and children helping out. Evening buffet was delicious - help yourself from a large selection of fresh entrées and desserts. Main course no choice, but very tasty and fresh. Comfortable huge room (21) with walk in shower. Cool even though not air conditioned. Beautiful old stone buildings with interesting history and pretty gardens.
Cons: Nothing to dislike
9.3 Excellent
Pros: A very comfortable and relaxed place to stay. Evening meals especially good in the terrace. The place feels halfway between a hotel and a country home, very pleasant.
Cons: Wifi didn’t reach the room (room 2), which is a little annoying because 3/4G data is also very weak, given the rural location. And some kind of shower curtain would be helpful.
7.5 Good
Pros: The Chateau is lovely as are some of the staff, dinner buffet is amazing. Do not think Hotel or restaurant buffet this is more like a family/friends get together for dinner with terrines, cold meats salads, savoury tarts, breads & desserts. Seating is inside or outside in the garden, both areas are lovely.
Cons: No aircon & as it was 45 degrees that day rooms were unbearable. The Chateau in cooler months would be glorious. There is also no fridge in room or tv
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable bed Good breakfast with good choice Great helpful hosts Nice in house dinner available
Cons: No TV in room No help with heavy luggage in or out of hotel
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the best hotel we have stayed in during this trip. Everything about it was fantastic. The family who runs the hotel seemed glad to see us. They welcomed us like long lost cousins. The room was huge with a big king size bed. We had the best night’s sleep in that bed. Dinner was the best we had on this trip. All home made and delicious. Breakfast was also very good. This is an ideal hotel for a quiet luxurious get away in the French countryside
Cons: Nothing. Everything was perfect
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Property is an old homestead in a very rural area of the Loire valley. The staff was very friendly and pleasant. The room was large and comfortable. Location is good was visiting a number of the chateaus and wineries in the valley by car. Dinner was a culinary delight at a rational cost. Breakfast was fine; the croissants were super.
Cons: Long gravel walk from parking to the room. Carts are provided but paving would be better. Our room was odd in that the bathroom led both to the sleeping area and the only outside door. This was inconvenient at times.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Almost everything - location, facilities, room, parking, staff and especially the dog. They do have a real champagne, not just the local gas wine, like the most establishments in the area!
Cons: Internet! WiFi didn't work in our room. The dinner was nice but with the very limited selection (to be more exact no options at all) of the main course.. Taste of the food and the interior of the dining room was good, but it felt like dining in a very sophisticated canteen.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful buildings, stunning room, helpful staff, fantastic place to stay.
Cons: Room was hot and stuffy and no screens on windows so insects came in at night if windows were left open. We needed to ask for a fan the second night which helped. Poor wifi.

5.8 Okay
Pros: Cleanliness, roof-windows were nice. Wi Fi was good. The kitchen is well equipped. Drying rack for clothing is good as well
Cons: The hostess could not speak any words in English, so we used our fingers for communication. The property we have booked is named "One bedroom house", but it is not! It is just very small Studio apartment in the attic. When we came we have immediately checked the photos and property description on Booking.com. Photos are shown only parts of this Studio, but you cannot imagine the size of the room using this pictures. I added some of them in my feedback for others guests. The stairs to this attic studio does not have any handrail so it could be dangerous for older people or children. The table in the dining area is too high. Garden view means just parking area view and the outdoor furniture is directly on the parking. I added photos with view of the entrance to the Studio (the door in the roof), the view from the outdoor dining area and the view of the whole apartment from the bed.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Hosts were very helpfull !

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous food. Creative architecture. Helpful staff.
Cons: Room was very small.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A very different and special experience. The service was excellent; breakfast excellent, and room very high quality. Best of all is the ambience of staying at the abbey: you can wander around the abbey at any time, and we did: to walk around the tombs of kings and around the abbey cloisters when no one else is there, is really unique and special.
Cons: Unfortunately the restaurant was not open on Saturday nights, which is a bit strange, as it seemed to be open all other evenings. Had it been open, we would have eaten there, and I guess from the breakfast, it would have been very good indeed. Instead we walked into the town, but the choice there was not as good.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous location in the grounds of Fontevraud-l’Abbaye with its rich history. An excellent restaurant with a top notch tasting menu and choice of local and other wines. The breakfast was beautifully laid out with a wide choice of breads, cheeses, cereals, local gourmet jams, cocxotte eggs with a mushroom and lardons fricassee to go with it.
Cons: We knew there was no air conditioning as it’s an old building. There was a fan in the room but it was only after we called to ask for use instructions that someone came with ice packs and water to fill the fab tank to provide some cool air as it was heat wave week at the time. Our “superiors room” was also on the top floor and facing west so got the heat from top and side. This should have been offered this at check in. But not surprised as the woman at the desk was rather curt and unhelpful in other ways as well, sadly not the type one expects to see in such an establishment. During check in, with great and pointed magnanimity, gave us one small bottle of cold water. The guy who came to set up the fan offered us more. Fortunately she wasn’t there when we left. Because it was very hot the woman checking us in The room and bathroom, although nicely sized and with closet space, was also unexpectedly spartan. No water, no minibar, mismatched towels, not even basics like shower cap or packaged soap. Just a tiny bare bar on the sink and a pump bottle of shower gel.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautifully situated hotel adjacent to Abbey. Friendly and helpful staff. Restaurant amazing!
Cons: No efficient air conditioner in room.
6.8 Good
Cons: rather warm overnight - quieter aircon would enhance
7.0 Good
Pros: Beautiful abbey and restaurant. We stayed here on our honeymoon last year and were blown away by the accommodation, but this time it was fine but not nearly as nice.
Cons: The room was bordering on basic at best and the staff were no way near as helpful. Also there were a few large bookings (for a wedding and conferences) and our group (3 couples) were treated a bit like second class guests. Really disappointing as we'd booked this for our friends and organised a trip specifically around this hotel and it didn't live up to its reputation. Also, it was boiling hot and they don't have air conditioning in some of the rooms.
9.5 Excellent
Cons: If it had air condition would be outright 10.
3.8 Mediocre
Pros: Poor service. Smelly room
Cons: Poor service. Smelly room
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It was a very quiet calm place to stay. The dinner was excellent. Staff were all very helpful.
Cons: The towels in the bathrooms were a bit small and our bathroom was visible from the restaurant below so we had to hang a towel over the window.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I loved the location staff and food

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We found this place in 1996 for an overnight B&B, and vowed that if we ever had the chance we would return one day for an extended stay - we stayed for 8 days. Dominique and daughter Agatha were generous hosts and loved explaining the thousand year history of what had been a small 'fighting castle' at the edge of 3 king/dukedoms, rather than a Loire palace. Excellent breakfast in the hall chatting to other guests. We usually had lunch out at one of the many nearby historic sites, vineyards or mushroom caves, and an evening picnic under one of the chateau's shady trees with the local delicacies and wine we had bought that day - there are no restaurants within walking distance and didn't feel I could enjoy a local wine and drive an unfamiliar car on the 'other' side of the road after eating out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely people with lots of stories about the history of the castle.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful place to stay. Very peaceful, lovely countryside and very near to Fontevraux Abbé. Dominique and Alicia are wonderful hosts.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: This is a remarkable property which provided us a marvelous experience. A fortress and chateau-like building with pieces dating to the 11th century and several additions and revisions over subsequent years, it is now the treasured home of Dominique and Alija de Cornulier Luciniere, full of the evidence of their lives. Staying there is being graciously welcomed into their world, including old and new stories in front of their fire with the well behaved dog coming out of his lair under the dining room table to say hello on occasion. Breakfast, quiet, location, view, advice in local tourist info and dinner all terrific, as other report. Highly recommended.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners were very friendly and even gave us a tour. The room was very comfy and luxurious. The breakfast was excellent.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Benedict was an excellent host. This is a real castle which provides an authentic experience of staying in a castle.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The welcome and the hospitality were outstanding. We were made to feel very special. A lovely break.

Pros: The room was spacious, the breakfast was copious, the whole building was high class.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Jean-Claude and Moha made us very welcome to this wonderful old manor house in the heart of the countryside surrounded by fields of wheat, sunflowers and vineyards. We stayed in the smallest room in the place at 27 square meters it was more than enough room for us. The breakfast (included in the room rate) was really good with more than enough to eat and set us up for the day. The location is convenient for visiting local historic towns like Chinon, and Fontevraud .
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Excellent location, beautiful old building overlooking the castle. We had room 11 in the roof, stunning views We paid an extra €13 for breakfast, well worth it. Breakfast was served in an underground cavern, stunning.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Best breakfast in france our host worked so hard it's just perfect
Cons: NOTHING
4.3 Okay
Pros: Lovely view of the castle of Montsoreau
Cons: Sadly the hotel was disappointing, especially after cycling a long way to get there. My room was called a special room with a view and was rather expensive. Sadly the room was right above the front door of the hotel and I could hear guests leaving and arriving. They could see right into my window so I had no privacy. The garden dining area was across from my window and I could also hear people talking until midnight. So, I kept the window closed but there was no fan or air conditioning in the room so I had a very bad night’s sleep. (I finally opened the window at 3am!) The breakfast buffet was a rather dark and gloomy affair in the windowless cellar of the hotel so I decided instead to sit outside the little café in the village overlooking the Loire. I’ve never written a bad review before but I couldn’t wait to get away from this place. It was so claustrophobic.
8.8 Excellent
Cons: No airco. Room very hot
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We liked the attentive staff and the quaintness of the old building.
Cons: Nothing

Pros: Just the place we were looking for! When we thought of a place to stay along the Loire - we imagined a place like this. Covered in history and french charm. As a bonus the family who is running it - are amazing people. Always there to help and take genuine interest in their guests and their inquiries. The place is run with green and organic in mind. They even used natural based materials for renovation. Would highly recommend!
7.5 Good
Pros: The lady who owned it
Cons: The husband of the lady who owned it. We didn't like his reaction when we told him we accidentally broke a piece off a chandelier that was hanging very low over the bed!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It was a great location for visiting some of the wonderful places nearby and there is so much to see locally, Our room had a view and was very comfortable. The bed very comfy and the shower was one of the best we have experienced in our travels. Having access to tea and coffee making facilites and a lounge was great. We were made to feel very much at home by our hosts who generously shared their local knowledge and made our visit very memorable.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Good breakfast, lovely hosts, beautifully restored old house, very relaxing location
5.0 Okay
Pros: Owner was very friendly, and offered to take our luggage onto our next hotel (we were on a walking trip). Trogladyte caves immediately behind the property.
Cons: The owners are gradually doing this chamber d'hote up. But Booking.com listed an Executive Lounge which was actually a room with a large hearth with the ashes still in, some cups and a kettle, milk in the kitchen downstairs, wifi connection only outside, no tv, no computer, second-hand shabby furniture, anything but Executive. Bedroom was just about OK. Walls had been painted over the original concrete.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Quirky , beautiful old room, tastefully decorated.
7.5 Good
Pros: Quirky, friendly host, right on the river,
Cons: Drive from town

Pros: It was very quiet and the evening meal was excellent.
Cons: We stayed in a wheelchair accessible room. The bathroom was adapted but there was no rail on the door which made closing it from the inside difficult. Also the room was very hot.

Pros: We stayed here because it's half-way between Montpellier and Cherbourg (for the ferry). Owners welcoming even though we were late: and gave us the best room at the lower price. The house is a piece of real old France, very spacious comfortable room, fresh flowers, a good experience.
Cons: The coffee at breakfast could have been stronger — but that's just me, I need a lot of coffee in the mornings.
