The UK’s 2017 Capital of Culture, Hull is a jewel of East Yorkshire and a city that’s packed full of interesting people doing great things. The Humber Bridge—a 1.4 mile road suspension bridge—is one of the most prominent landmarks in the city. It’s this structure that most people picture when chatting about the area. But there’s so much more to Hull than that. An award-winning aquarium, the iconic Hull Minster and plenty of fantastic museums make Hull a must-visit. With family ties to the city, I’ve learned a lot about Hull over the last few years. From navigating public transport to exploring grand halls and meeting the local wildlife, I’ve made plenty of memories here. From luxury and boutique properties to budget and unique options, here’s my pick of the best hotels in Hull.

1.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hull

Address:

24 Ferensway

Price:

$83-$449/night

Located less than a 10-minute walk from the city center, the DoubleTree by Hilton is one of the best hotels in Hull for a central stay. One of the top luxury hotels in Hull, you can rest easy in your choice of Standard/King Doubles, Junior, or Premium Suites.

Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse—the in-house dining option—is the hotel's highlight. Everything’s good here, but I’m a sucker for the classics. After dinner, enjoy a drink at the Lexington Rooftop Bar. I’d recommend a Smokey Old Fashioned, prepared with Johnnie Walker Black Label and Laphroaig.

The famous Hull Truck Theatre is located on the doorstep and is perfect for performing arts fans. Alternatively, visit the Ferens Art Gallery to see their extensive collection of European artworks. Rosa Bonheur’s “The Lion At Home” was a favorite of mine.

2.

Dunedin Country House

Address:

40 Westgate

Price:

$138-$174/night

A short 30-minute drive from the center lies Dunedin Country House, an intimate 11-room hotel offering a luxury experience to guests. Choose one of the exquisite guestrooms or enquire about the self-contained lodges—complete with hot tubs—that can sleep up to 10 guests.

The hotel is a popular wedding destination and it’s easy to see why. Outside of the hustle and bustle of the city center, it’s a tranquil destination for a quiet getaway. Spend an afternoon on the hotel grounds or drive out to the beach and experience the handsome, rugged Yorkshire coastline. This is one of the best hotels in Hull for a real escape.

The in-house restaurant is available from Friday to Sunday, but it’s the Sunday Lunch that it’s renowned for. Enjoy decadent starters, traditional mains and desserts to die for. Whipped goat’s cheese, pan roasted duck breast and port poached pear are my recommended orders.

3.

Kingston Theatre Hotel

Address:

1-2 Kingston Square

Price:

$122-$196/night

A luxury Victorian hotel boasting 28 guestrooms in the heart of Hull’s old town—right on Kingston Square—the Kingston Theatre Hotel is hands down one of the best hotels in Hull.

The building is perched in the perfect location for theater fans. The Hull New Theatre, built in 1939, is a two-minute walk away—ideal for a late-night show.

In the morning, start your day with a strong coffee from Brew, a fantastic cafe bar with all-day opening hours. Alternatively, the nearby Coffee House Cafe offers a fantastic menu that’s guaranteed to start your day right.

4.

Green Ginger House

Address:

4 Land Of Green Ginger

Price:

$104-$141/night

Found in one of the city's oldest remaining bank buildings—which dates back to the 1800s—Green Ginger House is one of my favorite boutique hotels in Hull. Guests can choose from a total of 15 guestrooms, including single, double or deluxe double rooms, or stylish self-catering studios and apartments.

Meals aren’t offered at the hotel, so you’ll have to fend for yourself when it comes to food. However, at just a five-minute walk from the city center, you’ll be spoiled for choice with Hull’s vibrant food scene. I recommend checking out the best local spots via Fruit Market.

For me, the best hotels in Hull have to be near a quality coffee shop—Green Ginger House certainly ticks that box. Caffeinated is my coffee spot of choice, great for starting your day with a bang.

5.

Holiday Inn Hull Marina

Address:

Castle Street North Humberside

Price:

$78-$160/night

I may not be much of a sailor, but I still appreciate a good boat when I see one. That’s just one of the reasons why the Marina is my favorite area in Hull.

The Holiday Inn - Hull Marina is one of the best hotels in Hull to stay in if you want to explore the city’s famous coastal attractions. Choose from a selection of quality rooms, ranging from the Standard up to the premium Queen With a View. I’d recommend the latter to enjoy gazing out at the water from the comfortable bed.

The Deep—a huge aquarium boasting sharks, penguins, stingrays and sea turtles—is Hull’s star attraction, just a 15-minute walk down Humber Street from the hotel. On the way, stop by Nibble for a bite to eat.

6.

Hideout Hotel

Address:

9 North Church Side

Price:

$197-$201/night

One of the top-rated hotels in Hull, Hideout Hotel offers a 4-star, apartment-focused experience for well-earned city breaks. Guests can enjoy contactless check-in with an array of apartments available, ranging from Micro and Studio to Deluxe and Family.

All the apartments are self-catered, but those who prefer to eat out will be delighted by Hull’s wonderful food scene. Check out Wonky Tulip Coffee House for breakfast, the traditional Lion & Key for a pub lunch and The Hispanist for fine Spanish cuisine.

If it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for, I recommend taking a short trip to the Humber Bridge Country Park. The dog-friendly nature reserve is a lovely place to spend the afternoon when the weather’s good.

7.

Holiday Inn Express Hull City Centre

Address:

80 Ferensway

Price:

$31-$320/night

The second Holiday Inn in my round-up, this is one of the best hotels in Hull for shoppers. The Holiday Inn Express - Hull is actually located inside St Stephen's Shopping Centre, the city’s primary mall covering a huge 40-acre site.

Check into your room and head inside the center to enjoy a modern shopping experience. Pick up a coffee, visit the stores—including plenty of high street favorites—and catch a movie at Reel Cinema. For those who love their creature comforts, it doesn’t get any better.

The hotel is also well-positioned for public transport. Arrive in the city by train or take a day trip via rail—perhaps to York, where you can stroll along the historic Shambles, said to be the inspiration for Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley.

8.

Park hotel and apartments

Address:

Park Street

Price:

$72-$293/night

Park Hotel and Apartments is a large property located to the west of St Stephen’s Shopping Centre. Boasting a total of 71 guestrooms and 80 self-catering apartments, it’s one of the largest hotels in the city.

Football fans fill up the rooms around key games, as this is one of the best hotels in Hull for those visiting the MKM Stadium. However, at less than a 10-minute walk to the train station and just a 15-minute walk to the city center, the hotel is well located for any visit to the city.

The in-house bar and grill offers reasonably priced food between 5 pm and 10 pm from Monday to Thursday. Unfortunately, the restaurant is closed over the weekend, but there are plenty of great spots nearby to keep guests well-fed. Pho36, for example, is a fantastic Vietnamese restaurant boasting some of the best beef pho I’ve eaten outside of Hanoi.

9.

Lazaat Hotel

Address:

Wood Hill Way

Price:

$68-$126/night

Set in three-and-a-half acres of elegant gardens, Lazaat Hotel is a converted Georgian farmhouse boasting 43 luxurious ensuite rooms. A popular wedding destination, the hotel oozes romance, luxury and comfort, making it one of the most unique hotels in Hull.

Although a 30-minute drive from the center, Lazaat is one of the best hotels in Hull for a romantic escape. Start each day with an unlimited breakfast and finish off with a delicious evening meal—the coconut chicken curry is a personal highlight.

The nearby Cottingham Parks Golf & Leisure Club is a great course for traveling golfers, while the Skidby Mill—a working four-sailed tower windmill—is well worth a visit. It’s the perfect place to snap a few pictures and enjoy the East Riding Rural Life Museum.

10.

The Whittington & Cat

Address:

1, Commercial Road

Price:

$86-$102/night

The Whittington & Cat is one of the best hotels in Hull for a traditional pub experience. The family-run pub and hotel boasts a twin, two singles and five double rooms, all uniquely decorated for a comfortable stay.

Located on the Marina, the hotel is in the perfect location for a maritime-themed stay. Of course, no visit to Hull is complete without stopping off at The Deep, but it’s also worth checking out Hull’s Streetlife Museum to learn more about the transport of the past.

Enjoy an evening meal among friends with a range of traditional pub classics. Whittington’s homemade steak and ale pie is a personal favorite, but the mixed grill is a must-have for meat lovers. For veggies, there’s the homemade mushroom stroganoff or vegetarian sausage and mash.
