Pros: Wonderful host, collected and dropped me at the station. Went through maps, places to visit and there was also free bike hire to get around. Thank you!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host is a wonderful and helpful lady. She offered a lot of information, picked me up from the train station and drove me there several times, even though the train station is 10 min away. Everything was clean and comfortable. Within walking distance there is also a konbini.
Cons: n/a

Pros: Seiko San was so obliging. She picked me up from the station, gave me a map and orientated me, advised me on the best local restaurants and was even happy to take me to local souvenir shops. Her home was very clean, my Japanese-style room lovely and she even provided toast and coffee/tea in the morning, all at a very low price.
Cons: No complaints at all!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing kind people and owners Amazing afuro and incredible view Love the free bike rental and the many hike options There is an izakaya close by for dinner and a small supermarket and liquor store 6 min biking
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent food and a location right on the water in a small bay.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Didn't know they had the soaking bath in the communal bathroom when I booked. What a pleasant surprise!! Loved it so much after our long day of hiking :-) Their staff was very nice, helpful and attentive. Loved their dinner and breakfast.
Cons: There were a strong sewage smell coming from the unit (not sure what it was) under the sink in our room. Luckily there was a screen door between the sink area and the room; so we were be able to close the screen door to keep that sewage smell away. What a terrible smell to have in such a lovely setting!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic view from the room. Very tranquil and quiet little village with amazing nature just around the corner. Helpful and friendly staff. Perfect place to relax and be one with nature. Nice and big japanese breakfast. Dinner was nice, but not as nice as breakfast. The two onsens were good and had nice views.
Cons: The coffee could have been better, but it wasn't anything we were bothered with.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The stay was wonderful! The staff were on point, and always went the extra mile - I was hiking the kumano kodo, and they helped me mark maps, give suggestions, and drove me to the train station in the morning. The building is wonderful - it doesn't look amazing from the outside, but it has all the right details on the inside, and some truly wonderful views of the bay. The bath was nice - big windows so you can watch the water, very well put together. The meals are on the more expensive side, but they're also very good value for money. I did the Japanese option breakfast, which came with fried egg, seafood soup, smoked fish, veggies, about a half dozen taster dishes.
Cons: The location is the biggest issue: Kata just isn't a large town. There are 2-ish restaurants and a single convenience store, and that's it. I'd suggest going in to Owase to stock up on snacks beforehand - they have a large Aeon - and for restaurant selection. (This isn't really a dislike - just know what you're getting into. If you're coming here, you're really getting away from it all!)
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Amazing dinner and breakfast, beautifully presented. Staff fantastically friendly. Sea view onsen. Rooms are traditional tatami mats, terrific.

8.3 Excellent
Pros: Cozy and comfortable place. Nice people. They even asked me whether if i want a ride from station. You'll have everything you need. Also he can speak English pretty well.
Cons: It was raining and windy as hell and I thought the library will be blown away. The wind made crazy noises. The place is under a mountain so it is hard to find but if you are going to have a walk in the morning it is great.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great concept! We loved the tatami and futon bedroom, the rice paper walls and the wooden engawa verandas. We were surrounded by familiar japanese comic books that I devoured myself as a grown up kid. Our host Remi was extremely nice and helpful, we were allowed to keep our luggages there for a couple of days while we were hiking the Kumano kodo trail.
Cons: Do not expect luxury, but the warmth and happiness of a humble home.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: amazing stuff, typically japanese atmosphere in a really interesting location, i really liked the japanese style room it was really authentic, not far away from hongu shrine
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A really wonderful place! I stayed here for some days after hiking on the Kumano Kodo. It's located inside one reading room of a youth library, the guesthouse stay so helps maintaining and offering this service for young children to have a place to meet, read, study, do homeworks and play. It has a lot of charm and staff is very kind and friendly, again thank you all very much for everything. A wonderful idea that needs to be supported.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The host of the property was very friendly and quickly made us feel at home. They helped us to organise our bus for the following day and recommended a number of places for eating. The beds wery very comfortable and the location was a short walk from the station. A very unique experience!
Cons: The property itself is a little rough around the edges, some doors are a bit stiff, the bathroom was just functional enough, but very cold. It's quite open to the elements, not much between the property and the outside world, and so there were more than a few flies and mosquitoes. No locks!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I had an awesome stay at the Youth Library Engawa! It is a very unique place, full with books that you can dig into in a cozy retro home. I had very interesting discussions with the friendly owner Tetsuji. He was very helpful with my questions about bus stops, places to eat and so on and I felt very welcome. The location is quite conveniently based close to the two must-see shrines.

Pros: This hotel is in walking distance of the train station. The staff friendly and helpful.
Cons: The rooms are a bit dated, but very comfortable.
7.9 Good
Pros: It is rather nice hotel considering the "out the beaten track" location. Little walk from the station but there is convenient store and some bars around, so nice area.. The room was larger than average in Japan. The beds were comfortable.. everything was fine.. in addition, this is one of the few hotels that actually seems to know Japan laws that they do not need to copy residency cards of residence (that most hotels do as they misunderstand that they have to check every "foreigner")
Cons: To be honest, nothing comes into mind. It was rather good experience
9.2 Excellent

Guesthouse Hikari - Kumano - Building
13
7.2 Good (63 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in a town adjacent to the coastal pilgrimage route of a world heritage, Kumano Kodo, it is an accommodation that provides convenient access to Matsumoto pass and Shichirimihama beach.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location and price. Use of a authentic Japanese bath house next door (for a small fee).
Cons: The walls where extremely thin and had gaps in the top of the wall between rooms. This made the place very noisy.
4.2 Okay
Pros: The owner is kind.
Cons: The bath has to be paid separately.
6.7 Good
Pros: Very friendly owners, and helpful. Just the last two days we can't find them anymore. Walk distance to an onsen in the village. Nice experience.
Cons: In between the guest rooms are no walls but panels, so no insulation. You can hear everything of your neighbors. Sometimes it's a bit disturbing.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: This was a truly Japanese guest house, tatami mats on the floor, futons for beds, screens (no doors), toilets down the hall and baths/showers a block away for 400 yen per person. Bring your own towels. If you want a Japanese experience, then this is the right place for you. We liked Hikari Guest House because it provided us with a truly local experience. The guest house was clean and quiet and within a few blocks of the train station. There is a beach a block away but it is rough. However, a pleasant mile long walk takes you to a very nice beach where we spent a full six hours in the warm waters and gentle waves. The local tourist office is very helpful and will direct you.
Cons: Only screens separated the rooms, no doors. The Japanese are famous for their honesty so we never worried about our belongings.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: It was in a very good location
7.0 Good
Pros: A good little guesthouse in a great little city. It's located in a quieter district on the north end of town, but that's where a lot of the things to do are - the kumano kodo trail, the better beaches, the lion rock, the onigajo, etc. The room was comfortable, the place was pretty quiet. It definitely met my expectations and was good value for the price. Be warned: the lady that runs it doesn't speak any English, though she has some good google translate skills.

Pros: Good location. Friendly staff, they let me checked in at 10 am because the typhoon is coming. Delicious breakfast. Good price.
Cons: The facility is a little bit old but acceptable.
7.5 Good
Pros: Great friendly staff upon arrival. Hotel was close to supermarkets and our room had a nice view of the river beside the property. Also free parking provided at a parking lot 20 metres from the property.
Cons: Hotel is a bit outdated and the bed is a bit too springy, I would expect better beds for the price.
