We got the family room with two private onsens, one of which was outdoor. Absolute splurge but so worth it. The service was insanely impeccable, from the moment our car arrived at the ryokan to the moment we pulled out of parking. We felt very well taken care of. Room (more like a... japanese style villa) was enormous, with multiple hallways leading to bathroom, terrace, and onsen area. Kotatsu was such a blessing in winter, so comfortable warming our toes while listening to the river outside rushing by. The kaiseki here blew our minds. So. much. food. And really good food at that. The onsens were BEAUTIFUL. We didn't spend time in the public/family ones as we had our own, but we had a look. The ones in the room were awesome, it was so serene soaking in the outdoor onsen with a view of the river. Felt so relaxed after our first soak that we fell asleep till dinner. The weighted duvets here are also the fluffiest I've seen. So. Freaking. Fluffy.
They provide two bottles of water per night, but it's not really sufficient seeing as this place is located far away from the town and you'll most likely be spending all your time in the room. The hot water dispenser was thoughtful, but when I used it the water was a little dirty. We only discovered the vending machine as we were leaving.
Fantastic location, wonderful hotel with very friendly and helpful staff! The room was spacious, the onsen just outstanding. Great breakfast, delicious and fabulous dinner. Highly recommended!
Knowing that we are visitors from Hong Kong, the hotel arrange a Taiwanese staff who is proficient in Taiwan language and English to serve us. It is very thoughtful arrangement. The room is spacious with private onsen. You can enjoy the waterfall view in one of the public onsen. The hotel is so nicely decorated with traditional Japanese garden style that it becomes one of our "site seeing spots".
My husband and I stayed at this ryokan for a few days. It was our first time traveling to Minamioguni and we did not know what to expect. Oyado Kafugetsu exceeds our expectations in many ways. Our room was a lot bigger and newer than expected. We even had a private indoor and outdoor bath which were free to use at any time. My husband and I are big fan of traditional Japanese home and this ryokan is just perfect! There were a female and a male (separated) baths with breathtaking view to a waterfall, and also a couple of other shared baths near the waterfall. The whole experience is just amazing! Breakfast and dinner were inclusive in the hotel fee. The food there was definitely the best we have had during our entire trip in Japan this year. The staff were all very courteous, professional and friendly. Despite our limited knowledge and proficiency in Japanese language, we were able to communicate and had fun conversations with them. It was definitely the place to be if you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life to uninterrupted tranquility. We felt really spoilt during our entire stay there and will definitely stay at Oyado Kafugetsu again. We highly recommend it to anyone traveling in Minamioguni/Kumamoto.
Staying at this place was an amazing experience. The facilities are great − both the shared ones and private ones. We stayed there two nights. Perfect place to relax! The room was great − not only for the aforementioned private onsen: we loved the kotatsu! The food was absolutely amazing as well. It’s not a cheap place to stay, but for us it was totally worth it.
Not a minus in itself, but the whole area is hard to reach by public transport. We could not make it to the daily Kurokawa bus in time, so had to rely on a string of trains, buses and taxi − stressful, but everything worked out though! And the onsen itself is a fair walk to Kurokawa town. We wanted to drop by there for post-office, and it was a solid 20m walk − a nice one, but not with sidewalks all the way − quite stressful with cars coming up :)
